Shuler Hensley
Shuler Hensley, a Marietta native and multi-award-winning Broadway, off-Broadway, film and TV performer, has been an integral part of the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards — the Shuler Hensley Awards since the program’s inception 10 years ago. Teacher, fellow performer and inspiration, he has given his time, energy and talent to support and further the arts in education. Mr. Hensley’s list of roles and awards is long and illustrious. He most recently played Oscar in The New Group’s production of Sweet Charity opposite Sutton Foster. He also played the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas in Chicago and at Madison Square Garden, Tony in New York City Center’s Encore! Production of The Most Happy Fella and two plays in rep at the Cort Theatre: Waiting for Godot and No Man’s Land. He appeared in Carousel at Avery Fisher Hall with the New York Philharmonic, an event nationally televised on PBS. He has played the Monster in Young Frankenstein, Javert in Les Miserables and Jud Fry in Oklahoma!, a performance that earned him the triple crown of a Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award. Off-Broadway he’s done Fiorello!; The Whale, which earned him “Stage Performance of the Year” from New York magazine; Silence! The Musical; Sweet and Sad; and The Great American Trailer Park Musical. He starred in Ghost Brothers of Darkland County at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre as well as All About Us and The Phantom of the Opera. His work extends to television and film, and he has performed in opera and with symphony orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Detroit Symphony and the New World Symphony. His TV credits include “Elementary,” “The Americans,” “Deadline,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “The Jury.” His film appearances include The Legend of Zorro; Van Helsing; The Bread, My Sweet (aka A Wedding for Bella); and Odd Thomas and Cruiser. A recent film project had him playing President James Garfield in PBS’ “Murder of a President” on Georgia Public Broadcasting, as well as recurring characters on NBC’s “Shades of Blue” and Cartoon Network’s “Neon Joe Werewolf Hunter.” Shuler recently performed in On the Town with the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas; was seen as a recurring character on “OA,” a new Netflix series; and performed the role of Julian Marsh in The Muny’s production of 42nd Street. Upcoming projects include Leon Czolgosz in Assassins at New York’s City Center and the villainous protester in the recent movie The Greatest Showman! shulerhensley.com

2011 “The Shuler Awards have given me great connections to theater artists far and wide. I am able to have a vantage point of theater with other artists from all backgrounds, all from the ‘Shuler experience,’ something I am truly grateful for. The Shuler Awards have also given me a great deal of confidence to perform onstage. Being blessed to have had a live audience of over 20,000 people truly grounds you as a performer.” — Blake Parker 2015, 2016, 2017 Shuler Participant

“The Shuler Awards were the opportunity that put me on my college path and career path towards stage management. By being a part of S.T.A.R. Council and meeting working professionals, I was able to see myself becoming a part of the profession. The Shulers are an amazing opportunity for the future generations of technical theater to explore their passion and the opportunities for them. I will forever be grateful for all that the Shulers have provided me with.” — Danielle Bergman, 2016 & 2017 Shuler Participant

Caleb was born to teach. In fact, every kid he plays with leaves knowing a little more about something. One thing he doesn’t know yet is that his dream of being a professor can one day come true, because you play the Georgia Lottery. For the past 25 years, the Georgia Lottery and you have been helping our students reach their true potential. That gets an “A” in Caleb’s book.
