COBB ENERGY PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE’S INAUGURAL SIGNATURE SERIES was almost a year in the making. Creating it was a lot like assembling a jigsaw puzzle. The concept, says managing director Sandi Aaron, came from a review of CEPAC’s first decade, assessing the venue’s strengths, its core audience, its role in the arts community and in the community at large. Aaron was on the Signature Series planning team, along with Michelle Swann, general manager and CEO of the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Authority; Authority finance director Rob Turner; and CEPAC marketing director Tom Rowland. They had to decide how many shows to offer, how the package would be shaped and what kinds of performances to choose. World-class entertainment was a must, they decided, and the series needed to be varied and have wide appeal. With market research backing them up, team members decided on these six: • Shaken & Stirred: Feinstein & Friends. SEPT. 6. Michael Feinstein and vocalist Storm Large perform music from the Great American Songbook, James Bond and the “Mad Men” era. ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION | ENCORE ATLANTA.COM

• Dance Theatre of Harlem. OCT. 13-14. (a co-presentation with the Fox Theatre). This multicultural dance institution has roots in ballet that date to 1969. •R ogers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. NOV. 23-24. A new tour from NETworks Presentations with mostly fresh faces. • Kristin Chenoweth. MARCH 29, 2019. The Tony- and Emmy Award-winning singeractor performs onstage, on television, in films and as a voiceover artist. • The Temptations and the Four Tops. MARCH 30, 2019. Bask in the sounds of the 1960s with these groups, each of which still boasts an original member (the Temptations’ Otis Williams, the Four Tops’ Abdul “Duke” Fakir). • The Lightning Thief. JUNE 7-9 (five shows). The Percy Jackson Musical, as it’s subtitled, is based on the best-selling Rick Riordan novel (2006). The Greek gods are ruining Percy’s life. As Poseidon’s son, he has powers he can’t control and monsters on his trail. He must find Zeus’ lightning bolt to prevent war. Nominated for three 2017 Drama Desk awards including best musical. 8 COBB ENERGY PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE | COBBENERGYCENTRE.COM

The puzzle pieces didn’t align quite so nicely early in the effort. The team had to consider the who, what, where, when and how of the series and its components. Another critical piece: financial feasibility. “What’s out there is the first question,” Aaron says. Keeping up with regional, national and international shows, concerts and individual performers is a critical part of her job. The next nut to crack: What’s on tour? And what’s available in this area in a time frame that works with CEPAC’s schedule? Other questions were considered: Had the act ever appeared at Cobb Energy Centre? If so, what kind of attendance did it draw? If not, how did it draw at other venues? How was the performance received? What, if any, were the comments from audiences and reviewers? (Hello, social media.) Once the team settled on its six choices, offers went out. But getting all the contracts signed for any show is a big issue, Aaron says. It can mean talking to presenters, copromoters and, occasionally, a local partner. For The Lightning Thief, for instance, CEPAC is collaborating with the Fox Theatre. “We’re not sure what to expect with this first Signature Series,” Aaron says. “We are taking it step-by-step and building the strength of the structure.” As for the second Signature Series? She’s already on the lookout. ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION | ENCORE ATLANTA.COM

WANNA ONE WORLD TOUR | 7 p.m. July 2
K-POP GOES A NEW BAND
M
embers of the public chose the 11 members of the K-pop group Wanna One from among 101 competing singers and dancers on the South Korean talent survival show “Produce 101, Season 2.” Known as the Mnet TV show’s “national producers,” audiences also vote to decide a group’s concept, debut song and the winners’ band name. So in 2017, by popular demand and in order of most viewers’ votes, Kang Daniel, Park Ji-hoon, Lee Dae-hwi, Kim Jae-hwan, Ong Seong-wu, Park Woo-jin, Lai Kuanlin, Yoon Ji-sung, Hwang Min-hyun, Bae Jin-young and Ha Sung-woon became Wanna One. The group, not yet a year old, is the latest K-pop wave to flow from the Korean peninsula and fire up the sasaeng (super-fans), including devotees known as Wannables. Some of the young men in Wanna One are familiar. Ji-hoon, 19, was a child actor,
seen at age 8 in the series “Kimchi Cheese Smile.” Min-hyun once belonged to the group New Establishment Style Tempo (or NU’EST, as it’s better known). Sungwoon was in the band Hotshot. Jae-hwan appeared on Season 2 of “Korea’s Got Talent,” making it to the semifinals. The group first performed in concert at Seoul’s Olympic Hall, then officially debuted Aug. 7, 2017, at the 17,000-seat Gocheok Sky Dome. The EP 1x1=1 (To Be One) dropped Aug. 8 and 1-1=0 (Nothing Without You) followed a few months later. The intergenerational band (members range in age from 16 to 27) became the first K-pop group to sell a million copies of its debut album. This year, Wanna One released a music video for the bouncy rock song “I Promise You (I.P.U.),” the title song of its second EP, 0+1=1. Advance orders topped 700,000, outpacing the demand for the group’s debut.

BERES HAMMOND: LOVE & REGGAE | 6 p.m. July 8
CARIBBEAN CROONER
G
o to Jamaica, and you’ll discover that Beres Hammond is one of the island nation’s most beloved musicians, occupying a status just below the iconic Bob Marley. Hammond, 62, was born in the town of Annoto Bay in the parish of St. Mary and began his career in the mid-1970s with the group Zap Pow. His first solo effort, Soul Reggae, came in 1976. Smooth, American R&B-tinged vocals established his expertise with ballads: “One Step Ahead” and “I’m in Love” were both hits in Jamaica. He became known for his “lover’s rock” sound, showcased in 1988 on “How Can We Ease the Pain,” a duet with Maxi Priest, and on the lively 1991 dance hit, “Tempted to Touch,” probably his best-known song in the United States and Britain. Hammond released five albums and several compilations in the 1990s and
began the millennium with Music Is Life (2001), featuring Wyclef John and the hits “They Gonna Talk” and “Ain’t It Good to Know.” In 2012 he won a Grammy Award nomination for the double album One Life, One Love, which focused on love and social issues. It topped Billboard’s Reggae charts; Rolling Stone magazine called it “one of the best albums of a four-decadelong career”; and it received a collective cheer from Barbados-born singer Rihanna, rapper Drake and the seminal hip-hop group the Roots. Hammond is compared to Marvin Gaye, called “the King of Romantic Reggae” and "Jamaica's Springsteen" (for his commonman themes). These days he’s added the initials “OJ” to his name. In 2013 he was awarded the Order of Jamaica by the island’s government.

HEATHER LAND: I AIN’T DOIN IT TOUR | 7 p.m. July 14
LOL WITH HEATHER, LIVE
H
umorist, singer and writer Heather Land came into public view in 2017 in the new-fashioned way: via her blog and a series of comic “I Ain’t Doin’ It” Snapchat filter-enhanced videos. Within six months, she had 140,000 YouTube subscribers and 2.2 million Facebook followers, giving her a pithy platform and a wide audience. Her snappy social commentary, delivered in a Tennessee-mom twang, takes on everything from fitness fanatics (“I’d rather catch my pinky toe on a bed frame than go to CrossFit”) to pet people with dog strollers (“I’d rather chew secondhand gum from
underneath a chair at the Waffle House than see that mess”). About a year into her new career, Land found time — between tending her blog and videos — to release an album of country-andchurch tinged tunes and titled Counting On. Emboldened by her online success, the mother of two has taken to the road for one-off evenings that come packed with Southern-fried sarcasm and her signature unraveling of everyday events (going through the McDonald’s drive-through, for example, and trying to decipher makeup tutorials). Leggings and crop tops haven’t escaped her notice, either.

2018 MONSTA X WORLD TOUR | 8 p.m. July 25
OH BOY! OH BOY! OH BOY! …
T
he universal musical language of boy bands is back, primarily because of the soaring popularity of K-Pop groups. Monsta X, six singer/dancers and a rapper from South Korea, formed in 2015 on the reality-survival TV show “No Mercy,” covering songs by Ariana Grande, Justin Timberlake, Jay Park and others, and following that with several well-received EPs and a full-length album titled The Clan Pt. 2.5: The Final Chapter. The releases shot into the Top 5 on South Korea’s music charts, and the album hit No. 1 on Billboard’s World Album chart. Soon after, band members Shownu, Wonho, Minhyul, Kihyun, Hyugwon, Jooheon and I.M. (all born between 1992 and 1996) nabbed the Next Generation Asian Artist Award at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards.
This year they were presented with the Seoul Music Discovery Award at Mnet, in addition to topping the competition’s dance performance category. The group’s name means “my star” and “monsters conquering the K-pop scene.” This is the group’s second world tour, and the Atlanta date is one of only seven in the United States. Cobb Energy Centre is the third stop. If you want to see the septet more than once, the boys also will play Chicago (July 20); Newark, N.J. (July 22); Dallas (July 27); Houston (July 29); San Francisco (Aug. 1) and Los Angeles (Aug. 3). Expect the singing-dancing-rapping boys in the band to pick up new admirers on their jaunt through America — and get a rousing welcome from K-pop devotees and their faithful monbebe (fan club members).

BOWZER’S ROCK ’N’ ROLL PARTY | 7:30 p.m. July 27
ROCK ’N’ ROLL WILL NEVER DIE
C
rank up the wayback machine. Bowzer is ready to put the “Yes!” in yesteryear as the host of a live rock ’n’ roll party with the original singers of hit songs from the 1950s and ’60s. The goofy, gangly, greaser character from Sha Na Na (Brooklyn-born performer Jon Bauman) left the popular doo-wop group in the 1980s, after 13 years. Since then, he’s added actor, producer and VJ (on VH1) to his résumé. Bauman hosted “The Hollywood Squares” (1983-84) and produced “The Golden Age of Rock ’n’ Roll,” a 10hour series for the A&E network. Then he packed up part of rock's golden age and took it on the road. Performers at this pop fest include the Tokens, the band behind the chart-topping 1961 hit “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” (singer Jay Siegel’s soaring falsetto is one reason the song is remembered). Also here: Shirley Alston Reeves, original lead singer of the Shirelles and the powerful, plaintive voice behind “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.” In 1960, the song became the first No. 1 hit for an all-female group. If you remember the Shirelles, you remember “Baby It’s You” and “Soldier Boy,” too. Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon comes to the party with such hits as “Palisades Park,” written by TV exec Chuck Barris (“The Dating Game” and “The Gong Show”). Bowzer performs at the shindig with his band the Stingrays. Expect, too, tunes from Sha Na Na's Johnny Contardo. Rock ’n’ roll is more than 60 years old, but the party isn’t over yet. VIEWS LIVE WITH DAVID DOBRIK & JASON NASH | 7:30 p.m. July 28
DID THEY REALLY JUST SAY THAT?
I
n their "VIEWS" weekly podcasts, 21-year-old YouTube millionaire David Dobrik and Jason Nash, a 45-year-old YouTuber with a video blog of his own, invite people behind the scenes to see what the YouTube life. is like. Online episodes run about 40 minutes, with such themes as “My $35,000 Birthday Party,” “The Public Hates YouTubers” and “Going to Hawaii to Shoot My Friend With a Paint Gun”). Just about anything is up for discussion. True confessions happen, guest stars show up and pop culture is always on the menu. Dobrik and Nash’s contentious personal relationship (think “The Odd Couple”) is often a focus. With a best-podcast Shorty Award
(honoring social media’s best content creators and producers) under their online belt, VIEWS is a digital hotbed with a subscriber base of more than 6 million. Dobrik, a native of Slovakia, got his start as a teen in 2013, when he found an audience that couldn’t get enough of his six-second Vine videos. He moved his “doing stupid things” (his words) and messing-with-friends bits to YouTube in 2015, where the precise 4-minute, 20-second videos became hugely popular. When Dobrik took a break before vlog No. 420, it made news. Actor, writer, director and comedian Jason Nash often played Dobrik’s dad in the early videos and is now a YouTube personality himself. The Boston native was a semifinalist on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” in 2010.

ABBA THE CONCERT | 8 p.m. Aug. 16
POP-PERFECT TRIBUTE ABBA, the harmony-laden Swedish supergroup that owned 1970s' pop radio and seems to be an ever-present part of pop culture, never officially announced its breakup, but the foursome’s final performance came on British TV in 1982. The Visitors, eight Swedish singers and musicians, have been bringing the joy of ABBA’s upbeat sound to audiences for two decades. The group’s tribute act sold out the Hollywood Bowl and performed for 20,000 in Chicago. The group has taken its look-alike, sound-alike show (including rhythm-section musicians who played and recorded with ABBA) to India, Italy, Japan, Norway, the Philippines, Russia, Spain and Turkey, in addition to the United States. Lead guitarist Christian Fast calls ABBA music “pop evergreen.” So all the hits are showcased in a performance that's more than two hours long: “Mamma Mia,” “S.O.S.,” “Take a
Chance on Me,” “Waterloo,” “The Winner Takes It All” and, of course, “Dancing Queen.” The list goes on. ABBA, which became official in 1972, is the second-highest-selling pop group of all time, behind only the Beatles. The quartet, made of two married couples — Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad and Björn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson and Agnetha Fältskog — began in the late 1960s as a folk group called the Hootenanny Singers. It wasn’t until Swedish record producer/ engineer Michael B. Tretow joined them that the signature ABBA sound came to be. Here’s a bit of geopolitical pop trivia for you. ABBA’s sales in communist Eastern Europe were so high in its heyday that band members had to accept some payments in oil because bloc countries sometimes didn’t have enough funds on hand. No word from the super troupers on whether that had anything to do with the tune “Money, Money, Money.”

MARISELA Y AMANDA MIGUEL | 8:30 p.m. Aug. 17
MENTIRAS DE HIERRO TOUR
T
radition runs deep in the lush Latin American sound of singers Marisela Hernandez and Amanda Miguel, both longtime performers with an audience across the Americas. The two come together for an evening of music and “nights of surprises” as Miguel recently noted regarding touring with “La Dama de Hierro” (the Iron Lady), known to most fans as simply Marisela. Miguel, who’s Argentinian, moved to Los Angeles at age 16. She recorded her first album El Sonido, Vol. 1, in 1981, and found success with the songs “Así no te amará jamás” (“So He Won’t Ever Love You”) and “Mi Buen Corazón” (“My Good Heart”), which became staples on the Southern California Spanish radio station KRCD-FM.
Miguel’s fifth album, El Rostro del Amor, was released in 1989, and its title song was chosen to greet Pope John Paul II on one of his five visits to Mexico. She later released an album of ranchero music titled Rompecorazones. Hernandez, a Mexican-American singer, was born in Los Angeles. She recorded her first album at age 15 and recorded 13 more over the course of her career. Her 1990 cover of the Barbara George song “I Know You Don’t Love Me No More,” titled “Ya No,” went to No. 1 on the Billboard Latin Songs chart. As a child actor, she starred in Villa Alegre (“The Happy Village”), which ran on PBS from 1973 to 1981 and was the first bilingual TV program in the United States.
