The show’s big themes — what you stand for, what your principles are and what it costs you to stand up for them — are just as timely and pertinent today as they were then and in

YOU’RE PROBABLY NO STRANGER to The Sound of Music. You’ve likely seen the movie and may have sung along with the live TV version in 2013. Did you croon “Edelweiss” as Captain von Trapp in high school, or count your favorite things as Maria or stand sailor-straight as a von Trapp kid? Then what might a new production of this time-honored musical have to show you? Plenty, says director Matt Lenz. This tour, now in its fourth season, restores two songs cut from the movie (and many stage productions) and moves two others to their rightful, original spots in the story. Expect a show that

They sought to create a show that would be both fresh and familiar. “The film took out more of the adult, politically aware and sophisticated part of the storyline and focused on Maria, von Trapp and the kids, on the romance,” Lenz says. “It didn’t really focus on the political and social underpinnings of what was happening in 1938 in Austria. “That date jumped out at us when we started on this in 2015,” he says. “We looked at what was happening in our own country at the time and asked, ‘What was driving a lot of people back then in Austria?’” Lenz was associate director on this production, created by Tony Award-winning director Jack O’Brien (Hairspray, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Coast of Utopia) along with choreographer Danny Mefford (Dear Evan Hansen, Fun Home, Bridges of Madison County) and musical supervisor Andy Einhorn (Hello, Dolly!, Bullets Over Broadway, Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, The Light in the Piazza). “Our version absolutely delivers the joy

more fully reflects the cultural and political realities faced by Austrians and others in 1938 Europe. And as a reminder: The von Trapps were a real family that eventually settled in Stowe, Vt. The stage musical bears a message that has become ever more relevant and urgent in today’s highly charged political atmosphere, Lenz says. “Most people’s reference has more to do with the movie version than the stage play,” he says, referencing the 1965 film with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. “Since the movie, many productions have taken liberties with the book and music to reflect how the movie was directed or to incorporate things that were in the movie but not in the original version.” The team behind this Sound of Music returned to the 1959 original — with music and lyrics by the storied team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II (Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I), and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse.

and fun of singing with the children, of the blooming romance between Maria and von Trapp and the restorative emotional energy she brings to the von Trapp family,” he says. “But, we’ve also restored parts that usually get cut because people say it’s too adult or too sophisticated. In bringing back the adult concerns, we were amazed to discover how relevant The Sound of Music becomes.” The show’s big themes — what you stand for, what your principles are and what it costs you to stand up for them — are just as timely and pertinent today as they were then and in 1959, when The Sound of Music opened on Broadway, Lenz says. Sound of Music devotees who know every movie line and lyric will notice some differences, and they aren’t just artistic license. This staging brings back the songs “How Can Love Survive?” and “No Way to Stop It” (both sung by Elsa Schraeder, Max Detweiler and Captain von Trapp) and restores two well-known songs to their rightful places in the story.

Historically, “The Lonely Goatherd” is what Maria sings to calm the children during the thunderstorm. “It makes so much more sense there,” Lenz says. “She’s singing the loudest song she can think of to distract the children, and she’s yodeling.” “My Favorite Things” is a vehicle for a deeper understanding between Maria and the formidable Mother Abbess. “Maria sings this song in the abbey, and Mother Abbess sings it with her. It becomes a lovely bonding moment between the two as she reveals she, too, grew up in the mountains and loves them, and we learn that she’s human.” Moments like that continue to surface as the show moves into the first leg of its new tour season. “The more we work on it, the more it reveals itself as a deeply human piece rich with politics and money and relationships and family and spirituality,” Lenz says. “These are the things we all care about. It will surprise you.”

LEWIS BLACK: THE JOKE’S ON US | 8 p.m. Nov. 2

rammy Award-winning stand-up comic Lewis Black is among the

more prolific, popular and caustic performers working today — as a comedian, author, playwright, actor and social critic. For fans, his live performances are a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment. He’s a passionate performer who is a more of an angry optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon. He’s a comic who can cause members of an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making salient points about the absurdity of our world. Black, now 70, rants about history, politics, religion and any other cultural trends that tick him off. He uses sarcasm, hyperbole, shouting, profanity (be forewarned) and his trademark finger-shaking to bring emphasis to his discussions. He once described his humor as “being on the Titanic every single day and being the only person who knows what is going to happen.”

Black became famous with his appearances on “The Daily Show” in 1996. Those led to comedy specials on HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime and Epix. In 2001, he won best male stand-up at the American Comedy Awards. He’s released eight albums, including Grammy Award winners Carnegie Hall Performance (2007) and Stark Raving Black (2008). He’s published three bestselling books: Nothing’s Sacred (Simon & Schuster, 2005), Me of Little Faith (Riverhead Books, 2008) and I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas (Riverhead Books, 2010). In 2012, he performed eight sell-out shows at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre. In 2015, he voiced the character of Anger in the Oscar-winning Pixar movie Inside Out. Black’s The Rant Is Due live-streams on Audible. It includes behind-the-scenes moments from his tour bus and occasional phone calls to people behind the rants. From hate for pickles to disdain for online dating, his humor tries to channel the rage of 300 million neighbors.

TONIGHT! TONIGHT! West Side Story is legendary. Start with its creators. Dance master Jerome Robbins conceived, then directed and choreographed the 1957 Broadway original. Composing genius Leonard Bernstein wrote the score. And Stephen Sondheim, then a new kid on the musicaltheater block, wrote the lyrics. They used Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet as inspiration and New York City’s neighborhoods as their setting. At first, the team thought they’d focus on embattled religious factions — as in a Catholics-versusJews during Easter/Passover kind of thing. Newspaper reports in the intervening months — each creator was simultaneously working on other projects — convinced them to explore the rise of gangs. The world then met the Sharks (Puerto Rican immigrants ) and the Jets (poor, thuggish American kids). Musical theater, and opera, have never been the same since. So you see? Legendary.

West Side Story, darker than most musicals of its day, opened the same season as The Music Man, Jamaica, Oh Captain! and New Girl in Town. It won only two Tony awards — for Robbins’ choreography and Oliver Smith’s scenic design, losing the coveted best musical title to The Music Man, a decidedly simpler, sunnier look at American life and love. Four years later, when it became an Academy Award-winning movie, West Side Story collected 10 Oscars, including best picture. The stage version has been revived on Broadway four times to date, most recently in 2009, when some of the lyrics in songs for the Sharks and their girls were translated to Spanish. Not here, though. The Jets and Sharks still clash regularly on stages throughout America, many in high school gymnasiums and auditoriums. And more recently, on the opera stage. The 61-year-old musical has not lost its snap.

A DEPENDABLY DELICIOUS CONVERSATION "How easy is that?"

That's Ina Garten's trademark phrase, offered after she pulls together a quick lunch for friends or a Friday-night dinner for husband Jeffrey. If you’ve seen her Food Network show, “The Barefoot Contessa,” you’ve heard it before. But, she also could be describing the way she fell into the food world 30 years ago. “I had no idea what I was getting into,” she writes on her website. “In 1978, I was working in the White House Office of Management and Budget and thinking, ‘I've got to do something more creative and fun than writing nuclear energy budgets!’” Although she had no professional food experience, she made a lowball offer on a specialty food store in East Hampton, N.Y. The owner accepted, and Garten turned the Barefoot Contessa into a destination stop for specialty foods. That success led to a string of bestselling cookbooks, her Food Network gig (now in its 14th season), a line of branded food products and a permanent star in the culinary heavens. Garten sits down with a moderator in her Cobb Energy Centre visit, and audience members will be able to ask her any number of questions. Expect her to talk about her life and travels and offer behind-the-scenes tidbits about writing cookbooks and filming “Barefoot Contessa.” Her latest cookbook, titled Cook Like a Pro: Recipes and Tips for the Home Cook (Clarkson Potter, 272 pages, $35) came out

in October. It’s a guidebook for turning everyday cooks into intuitive, inventive chefs. She reinvents classic dishes like buttermilk fried chicken, iceberg wedge salads and baked Alaska, and presents 85 new recipes, all designed for modern kitchens and cooking skills. Fans can buy signed copies at the event or order ahead. As Garten might say, "How awesome is that?"

he five-member South Korean rock band DAY6 often gets classified as "K-pop," or Korean pop, which blends pop, electronic, hip-hop and other influences into a danceable genre. It’s designed to reflect and be distinct from two countries that have most affected Korean culture and history: Japan and the United States. DAY6 defies the usual expectations with a musical style that moves from romantic ballads on songs like "Beautiful Feeling" and "I Like You," to stadium-rock power anthems like "Shoot Me." DAY6 hit the South Korean music scene in 2015, after being put together by the talent agency JYP Entertainment. Its members — Jae (lead vocalist, guitarist, rapper); Sungjin (leader, main vocalist, rhythm guitarist); Young K (bassist, vocalist, rapper); Wonpil (synthesizer, keyboardist, vocalist); and Dowoon (drummer) — are all in their early to mid-20s.

One aspect that distinguishes K-pop from other genres is its strong identification with a fan base. Like other South Korean bands, DAY6 has its own fan club, called My Day. The artists connected with fans on a meetand-greet tour across North America in 2017. This metro Atlanta appearance closes out the group’s first world tour, titled Youth. Day6’s artists are fine with fans who follow them closely. "I don’t personally use the term ‘idol band,’ but I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing,” lead singer Jae said during a London stop in 2018. “The term ‘idol’ means to be looked up to, and I’m good with that." "If the music is good and you’re confident, it won’t matter which title tags along," keyboardist Wonpil said. "Also, being called ‘idol’ by anyone [makes me] grateful because there are people who get motivation from our music. It gives us a reason to behave well, but I think this actually makes me a better person."

IL DIVO | 8 p.m. Nov. 21

THE TIMELESS TOUR There are boy bands, there are cover bands and then there is Il Divo. The international classical-crossover quartet (two tenors, one baritone and a pop singer) celebrates its 15th anniversary of singing contemporary music with classically trained voices on a world tour behind its newest album, Timeless (Decca Gold). The group’s seventh album is a lush mash-up of pop tunes, songs from movie soundtracks and covers of a few entries straight from the Great American Songbook. It’s not your average cover album, though. All the songs were written in English, but Il Divo sings only a few that way. Still, you don’t have to be fluent in Spanish to recognize rafter-rattling renditions of Adele’s “Hello” (titled “Hola” on Timeless) or “Aquí Esperándote” (Il Divo's version of “My Heart Will Go On”). And if you can’t quite figure out why “Grazie Amore Mio” sounds familiar, just

know it’s Il Divo's Italian re-creation of the title song from Love Story. Il Divo — Swiss tenor Urs Bühler, German-born Spanish baritone Carlos Marín, American tenor David Miller and French pop singer Sébastien Izambard — were discovered in 1983 by “American Idol’s” Simon Cowell, who became their mentor. The vocal group has sold out four world tours to date and sold more than 30 million albums. It has earned 160 gold and platinum albums in 33 countries and was the first classical-crossover artist to debut an album at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. The concert will feature plenty of tunes from Timeless, of course, and from Il Divo’s vast catalog. Audiences also will see dancers, acrobats and other surprises. The name “Il Divo” means “the celebrity” in Italian. Fits, doesn’t it?

&B vocalist Will Downing returns this holiday season, bringing with him two like-minded guests — fellow vocalists Eric Benét & Eric Roberson. Let their soulful sounds soothe your Christmas spirit. Downing, whose career as a Grammynominated singer-songwriter-producer dates to the early 1980s, is known for his powerful baritone and his dedication to a sophisticated mix of soul and jazz. He’s attracted a devoted fan base that doesn’t

want to hear hip-hop, and he’s been a mainstay on urban adult contemporary radio for decades. Downing, now 54, grew up in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood and began his professional career recording backup vocals for Jennifer Holliday, Nona Hendryx and Rose Royce. He signed a solo deal with Island Records in 1988 and hasn’t looked back. Benét, a 48-year-old Wisconsin native once married to actress Halle Berry, first sang as a teenager with his sister and cousin in a group named, appropriately, Benét. Its one album went unnoticed and, in the early 1990s, he went solo. He’s recorded nine albums and earned multiple Grammy Award nominations. His 1999 release A Day in the Life won a Soul Train Music Award for best R&B/ soul album, male. He was seen in the Mariah Carey feature film Glitter (2001) and may be best known for his Billboard hit single “Spend My Life With You” featuring Tamia. SING! AN IRISH CHRISTMAS

reland’s Keith and Kristyn Getty are two of the most prolific and popular writers of 21st-century Christian hymns, including the modern classic “In Christ Alone.” They were born and raised in Northern Island, married in 2004 and, with their children, now split their time between homes in Northern Ireland and Nashville. Their first holiday album, Joy: An Irish Christmas, came out in 2011 and reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Christian and holiday album charts. They’ve produced similar albums since then. This holiday marks the couple’s seventh annual Christmas tour. (The concert version, carried by public television, has been seen in more than 45 million homes over the years.) The concert features Irish dancers and a fusion of Celtic, bluegrass, Americana, modern, classical and choral music performed by the Gettys and their band

of instrumentalists — on drums, fiddles, bagpipes, flute, harp and bodhran (a traditional Irish frame drum). As a Washington, D.C., reviewer put it: “You haven’t heard ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman’ until you’ve heard it performed with a lively Celtic flair, ending with two multitalented women laying aside their instruments to step dance their way to the end of the song.” “All of the songs are lovely, and the various reels that are included in some of them make them so beautifully Irish,” one fan said. “I especially love ‘An Irish Christmas Blessing,’ so perfect in its simplicity, yet with a message of comfort and hope in Christ.” We can’t promise “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” but it’s certainly possible. So are “Irish Christmas Blessing” and such tunes as “Here We Come A-Wassailing,” “Joy to the World” and the more sacred “Jesus, Joy of the Highest Heaven.”

A PHOTOGRAPHER AT WORK You can call Annie Leibovitz many things: a portraitist, an observer

of modern life, a chronicler of faces well-known and obscure. The Library of Congress has designated her a Living Legend. Just don’t call her a celebrity photographer. “I can’t stand the word ‘celebrity,’” she told The Telegraph during a UK appearance in 2016. “It’s such a brash word. I do work for magazines that have a lot of celebrities in them, but I photograph people from all walks of life, and I photograph people because I am interested in what they do.” In the 48 years since Leibovitz photographed John Lennon for the

cover of Rolling Stone, her name has become indelibly linked to an array of famous faces (Richard Nixon, Queen Elizabeth, Kendrick Lamar, Caitlyn Jenner, Amy Schumer and many more). Her latest book, a revised and expanded edition of her 2008 edition of Annie Leibovitz at Work (Phaidon), speaks to young photographers and viewers of her photographs who want to know the stories behind the stories of how she captured what appears. The new book comes out days before her Atlanta appearance and forms the background for her talk, during which she’ll discuss selected photos and talk about her philosophy of photojournalism. The Cobb Energy Centre appearance is her only stop in metro Atlanta. Does Leibovitz, 69, have a life philosophy? “Not really,” she says. “Work hard, be with your family. It doesn’t really add up to anything I’d embroider on a pillow. I try to be home for dinner, but I’m not there enough. I sometimes feel I’m still fumbling, getting it wrong, but I make my way.”

Jazz saxophonist Dave Koz takes to the road almost as regularly as Santa Claus. On this Christmas tour — his 21st — KEIKO MATSUI he’s joined by pop/blues saxophonistsinger Mindi Abair, South African singer-guitarist Jonathan Butler and Japanese fusion keyboardist Keiko Matsui. And he introduces R&B vocalist Sheléa. Sheléa (last name Frazier) is an American singer, songwriter, pianist, composer and producer who cites Whitney Houston as her musical inspiration and Stevie Wonder as a mentor (she performed with him at the White House).

She and the others now belong to a starry list of artists with whom Koz has collaborated throughout his career, a lineup that touches on pop, Latin pop, rock, country, blues, soul and jazz, and includes Burt Bacharach, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, the Foo Fighters, Shelby Lynne, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Rod Stewart, U2, Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder. Building on the success of last year’s 20th anniversary tour, the 2018 version promises fresh renditions of Christmas classics, a Hanukkah medley and tunes from the Koz catalog.

“By all rights,” The New York Times said in writing about the tours, “smooth jazz should own the holiday season, and the saxophonist Dave Koz is better positioned than anyone to make it so.” Koz, who’s 55 and has been kicking it in the jazz scene for almost 30 years, has been nominated for nine Grammy awards and has had nine No. 1 albums on Billboard’s Current Contemporary Jazz Album chart, including the popular Dave Koz Collaborations 25th Anniversary Collection (2015). His obsession with the saxophone began a long time ago. He learned it as a way to get into his big brother’s band.

hat do you get when you mix a marketing expert who does video, a studio engineer who writes music, a pianist with a solo career and a multitalented cellist? You get the Piano Guys — producervideographer Paul Anderson, pianistsongwriter Jon Schmidt, cellist-songwriter Steven Sharp Nelson and music producersongwriter Al van der Beek — all from Utah and all intent on making a positive impact on people through music videos. The name “Piano Guys” comes from a store in St. George, Utah, where owner Anderson dreamed of showcasing his pianos in videos that would go viral. Schmidt, in town for a concert, came in looking for a place to practice. He and Nelson had shared a stage once upon a time. Van der Beek connected with the others when he invited Nelson to see his decked-out home studio. That was 2010. Since 2011, the Piano Guys have made more than 65 music

videos, including their biggest hit, a 10-handed version of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.” By 2012, this 21st-century multimedia collective was known worldwide for its YouTube musicvideo mash-ups. Its channel became one of the most visited on the planet. TPG, as the collective is known, produced its first holiday album in 2013. A Family Christmas features 12 tracks, mostly songs we all know — “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “Good King Wenceslas,” “Let It Snow,” “Still, Still, Still,” “Away in a Manger.” The difference lies in the sound. “Our story is a miracle,” they say on their website. “We’re just a bunch of ordinary guys playing classically influenced instrumental music in videos that showcase incredible locations. We do not take credit for our successes. We thank God, our families and the people who have supported us by sharing our videos and purchasing our music.”

After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of Broadway in its heyday. Among their greatest successes were Pal Joey, On Your Toes, and Babes In Arms. Throughout the same era, Hammerstein brought new life to the operetta, culminating in the masterpiece Show Boat (music by Jerome Kern). HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL CROUSE (Book). The Lindsay and Crouse partnership stands today as the longest collaboration of any writers in theatrical history, lasting for 32 years. Howard Lindsay was born in 1889 and died in 1968. He became an actor at 19 and went on to become a successful Broadway playwright and director. Russel Crouse was born in 1893 and died in 1966. After serving in the Navy, he worked on New York newspapers, gaining his first renown through a signed column in the Post. his is likely your last chance to catch this Christmas train at the Cobb Energy Centre. Next season it plans to return to the Woodruff Arts Center in Midtown and the Alliance Theatre’s brandspanking-new Coca-Cola Stage. You know The Christmas Carol story. The miserly Ebenezer Scrooge (David de Vries again), an old and bitter man in 19thcentury London, is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. By jangling a few heavy chains and coaxing him to face his past and potential future, they ease him toward a less solitary existence.

The Alliance sets the scene on a stage stuffed fore, aft and all around with the detritus of lives not lived to Scrooge’s exacting economic standards. Furniture, knickknacks, dolls, carriages, boxes, toys, luggage and more are stacked and scattered from wing to wing. The previous owners are in debtors’ prison, their earthly goods in Ebenezer’s gnarled, greedy hands. Charles Dickens’ tale, originally a 1843 novella, has been seen as a Mister Magoo cartoon (in 1962), as an animated feature film with Jim Carrey (2009), as a classic brooding morality tale (1951), and on stages of every

sort for actors of every age all around the world. This particular staging stands out for several reasons: its attention to scenic and costume detail; it’s large, multicultural cast of top Atlanta actors; its snow; and its music — carols that fill the theater with angelic harmonies. For many in greater Atlanta, seeing the

Alliance Theatre’s A Christmas Carol — now in its 29th season — is as traditional as eggnog, fruitcake and wrapped packages. Director Rosemary Newcott, who’s doing her last Alliance Christmas Carol with this production, knows why. “The essential story helps us recognize the compassion we should have for all human beings,” she says. “No matter their circumstances.”

ome people might say that after notching 10 No. 1 singles, 11 Grammy Award nominations, a New York Times bestselling memoir and ongoing sold-out, coast-to-coast arena tours, Charlie Wilson has proven his point. Still, he isn’t planning to slow down anytime soon. “I’ve been in this game for many years,” says the Gap Band founder and solo artist. “I’ve had some big hit records. But I need to still show people that I’m in it. It’s championship time.” The Gap Band, with Charlie and his brothers Ronnie and Robert, was a synthheavy funk group (“You Dropped a Bomb on Me”) popular in the 1970s and 1980s. Wilson’s latest album, In It to Win It (2017), was nominated for three 2018 NAACP Image Awards. It features two Billboard No. 1 singles — “Chills” on the Adult R&B Songs chart and “I’m Blessed” on the Hot Gospel Songs chart. And so Wilson continues his reign as

“Uncle Charlie,” the nickname Snoop Dog gave him, by being one of the most soughtafter entertainers with today’s hip-hop and pop artists. His New Year’s celebration is hosted by Atlanta-based comic Stanford “MC” Lightfoot. In the years between the Gap Band’s heyday and his solo success, Wilson persevered through drug and alcohol addiction, homelessness and prostate cancer. He chronicled it all in his 2015 autobiography, I Am Charlie Wilson. He makes it a point to give back, and was honored at the 2018 NAACP Image Awards with the first-ever Music Makes a Difference honor. He’s been sober 22 years, helps homeless addicts and educates the AfricanAmerican community about prostate cancer. He also received a Rhapsody & Rhythm award in May from the National Museum of African American Music, scheduled to open in 2019 in Nashville.
