WELCOME
TO COBB ENERGY PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE
W
E’VE BEEN CELEBRATING a Decade in the Spotlight all year, and now our anniversary month has arrived. We have many festivities planned and hope you join us for the fun, excitement and shows we have in store for you. Our official anniversary is Sept. 15. To celebrate that milestone and kick off our second decade, we’re holding a 10th birthday bash on Saturday, Sept. 16. Please join us from noon to 4 p.m. at this free open house. Get to know our resident companies and the other arts groups with which we work. Take in a short performance in our beautiful theater — each offering a quick peek at the new season. We’ll also have kids’ activities, food, prizes, giveaways, some surprises and, of course, a birthday cake to share. And we’re thrilled to introduce our new Signature Series, a program that lets patrons choose from a special selection of shows. More to celebrate! We’re continuing our celebration of a Decade in the Spotlight with the 10th Anniversary Overture Gala on Sept. 21. The reception and a delicious dinner from Nicholas Walker, our culinary director and executive chef, are a prelude to an evening performance of Million Dollar Quartet. The 2010 Broadway musical relives one of the greatest jam sessions in music history and features tunes by Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley. It will be a night you’ll remember. We also present the new season for the nonprofit ArtsBridge Foundation, the education arm of Cobb Energy Centre, serving K-12 students and offering nationally recognized programming with field trips, classes, and training for students and educators. It also offers a popular Family Series and the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards (known as the Shuler Hensley Awards). We offer a roster of terrifically diverse shows this month, starting with South Korean pop star Taeyang and Priest Tyaire’s stage play Momma’s Boy. HGTV’s Jonathan and Drew Scott (“Property Brothers”) stop by with their House Party, an evening of tips, bloopers, sibling rivalry, door prizes and audience participation. Million Dollar Quartet premieres with Sept. 20 and Sept. 21 shows, its first at Cobb Energy Centre. The Temptations & the Four Tops team up to demonstrate why they spent more than 50 years at the top of the music charts. Kid favorite Peppa Pig comes to life in Peppa Pig’s Surprise, an interactive theatrical experience that promises fun, games and, yes, surprises. We wrap the month with comedian John Mulaney, an Emmy Award-winning writer, actor and producer, who brings his Kid Gorgeous tour to town, sharing stories and his signature observational humor. We thank you for helping us succeed in our first decade and look forward to a bright future, continuing to bring you world-class entertainment with something for everyone. See you at the theater! Not so long ago, the Cumberland area in south much quieter once workers in clusters of office buildings headed home. Weekends? Even quieter. Although Cobb Galleria Centre drew conventions, trade shows, events and conferences since it opened in 1994, something was missing. “We were not a complete community,” says David Connell, president and CEO of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce.
That missing element: public entertainment and a cultural heart. From the beginning, those who led development of Cobb Galleria Centre saw the need for a cultural center for concerts, theater, comedy and family shows to attract audiences and appeal to the growing

The opera’s move, in particular, spoke volumes. It meant that Cobb County was a distinct part of metro Atlanta, not a distant suburb,” he says, “and that Cobb Energy Centre was a major player on the arts scene.” Those moves 8 COBBENERGYCENTRE.COM | A DECADE IN THE SPOTLIGHT

It also brightened the days and evenings by spurring the development of restaurants and shops, giving people a reason to stay after work for dinner and a show. Cobb Energy Centre has become a regional focal point for tourism, says Holly Quinlan, president and CEO of Cobb Travel & Tourism. “It is a dynamic and thriving part of the mix of what Cobb County and the region have to offer … and a vital element in making the Cumberland area and Cobb County an entertainment district and a well-rounded community.”

TAEYANG 2017 WORLD TOUR
T
AEYANG, an enormously popular K-Pop artist, is known for his solo career and for being a member of the boy band Big Bang. Taeyang, whose real name is Dong Young-Bae, was born in May 1988 in Uijeongbu, South Korea, and began training in dance, voice and other performance elements at age 12. He joined the danceand rock-influenced all-male pop group Big Bang in 2006. The Big Bang quintet was one of the most popular international Korean pop groups to emerge in the 2000s. Its members were determined by an 11-part documentary TV series. The band became one of the best-selling digital groups of all time in Asia and one of the best-selling boy bands in the world. Taeyang, now 29, eventually added acting, modeling and a solo career to his repertoire. His 2008 solo EP debut, Hot, was acclaimed by critics and won the award for best R&B soul album at the sixth Korean Music Awards.

In 2010, Solar, his first full-length studio album, sold more than 100,000 copies. Rise, his second studio album, peaked at No. 112 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Chart, becoming the highest-ranking album ever by a Korean soloist. Its lead single, “Eyes, Nose, Lips,” peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard K-pop Hot 100 Chart, giving Taeyang his first solo No. 1 single there. His voice is what attracts the attention of most critics. Korean critic Kim Young-dae called Taeyang’s timbre “luxurious and one you couldn’t find before him,” noting that “instead of giving off a mechanically trained and cold aura that other idols usually exhibit, he has a warm and full emotional range.” The New York Times called him a “feline” and ferocious live performer. Another critic said that Taeyang’s “vocal prowess and sex appeal” are the best traits of his performances. His moves have been compared to those of R&B artist Chris Brown and his vocals to those of Miguel, another R&B vocalist. Taeyang, who is Christian, has multiple faith-inspired tattoos. His name means “sun” in Korean.

Priest Tyaire presents Momma’s Boy | Sept. 8 , 8 p.m. ; Sept. 9, 3 and 8 p.m.

A STORY ABOUT TURNING BOYS INTO MEN
hat happens when a mother holds onto her son too long? That’s the question at the core of Priest Tyaire’s story about a young man who prides himself on being macho but is, at heart, a momma’s boy. It’s also a story about how he tries to turn his stepsons into men. Momma’s Boy is set in an inner city, where Aaron and Autumn are police officers. Their relationship is complicated by his mother, who has run off her son’s romantic prospects before and is determined to do the same with Angela. No one can take care of Aaron like Momma does. Cobb Energy Centre audiences will see a starry cast that may include gospel’s Anthony Brown; TV/film actor Vivica A. Fox; singer-songwriter-actor Johnny Gill; TV’s Robin Givens and Jackee Harry; R&B artists Gary Lil G Jenkins, Shirley Murdock and Christopher Williams; comedians AJ

Johnson and Nephew Tommy; and singersongwriter Dawn Robinson. Tyaire began writing plays at a difficult point in his life. He wanted to honor his mother, Cynthia Cephas, who died of cancer in 2006, but wasn’t sure how. Finally, divine intervention. The message: “Write a play.” That play became a tribute to his mother and the struggles she endured as a 15-year-old parent. Tyaire wrote that first script, titled The Tears of a Teenage Mother, without much writing experience and without financial resources (he sold his SUV to raise funds). Since then he’s written Momma’s Boy, Mrs. Independent, Torn Between 2 Fathers, Wrong Shade of Black, Why Men Cheat and Why Women Cheat. Tyaire, 43, worked as an electrician before turning to playwriting. “I write about things that have happened in my life,” he says, “and what I hear people talking about.” Some compare him to Tyler Perry, and though Tyaire admits learning to write by “studying every Tyler Perry DVD,” he insists he’s his own man. “I have my own story, my own style.”

roperty Brothers.” “Property Brothers: Buying + Selling.” “Brother vs. Brother.” “Property Brothers at Home.” “Brothers Take on New Orleans.” If, like millions of others worldwide, you know those reality-TV titles are the work of Jonathan and Drew Scott, you also know you’re in for an evening of well-designed hilarity. In just six years, the Canadian-born twin brothers, now 39, have turned their entrepreneurial and construction talents into an HGTV juggernaut. The franchise started in 2011 with “Property Brothers,” in which the siblings help people buy and renovate a home. If you need help remembering who is who, Jonathan — born Jonathan Silver Scott — generally has the longer hair, a flannel shirt and a studded goth-rock tool belt. Drew — born Andrew Alfred Scott — is the buttoned-down one, a real estate agent and entrepreneur. Jonathan is also an illusionist. Drew is an actor. Both produce film and TV projects. They’ve also been Cub Scouts (yes, Canada has them), ranchers, clowns who charged clients $100 an hour, Freemasons, models, flight attendants, investors, country singers, screenwriters, improvisers and black-belt karate champs. The duo, in metro Atlanta on a national

tour, provide an uncensored look at their lives. They’ll break down their do’s and don’ts, share wisdom they’ve gleaned as entrepreneurs and reveal behind-thescenes bloopers. Also part of the festivities: audience participation, door prizes, impromptu design consultations, sibling rivalry and plenty of laughs. The tour is, in part, inspired by the bros’ new memoir, It Takes Two: Our Story (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $27). If you can’t get enough of them, HGTV has another of their shows in the pipeline. The four-episode series Property Brothers at Home: Drew’s Honeymoon House premieres in November. It will follow the brothers as Drew prepares to marry longtime love and fiancée Linda Phan and the trio renovates their Las Vegas home.

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET | Sept. 20-21, 8 p.m.
A SEISMIC SHIFT IN POPULAR MUSIC
B
y all accounts, the morning of Dec. 4, 1956, was a normal one in Memphis. Decent weather. No snow. Thoughts of Christmas in the air. No one knew that a seismic shift in popular music was about to take place. Elvis Presley, then 21, dropped by Sun Studio on downtown’s Union Street to see his pal Carl Perkins. At age 24, Perkins has already had a hit with “Blue Suede Shoes.” He’s there to work on a new track. Jerry Lee Lewis, also 21 and then unknown, has been asked to sit in. Sun artist Johnny Cash stops by, likes what he hears and joins the others. This flurry of chance encounters became one of the greatest jam sessions in music history — the only time that Presley, Perkins, Lewis and Cash ever played together. The moment’s place in history was cemented by Sun owner Sam Phillips, who knew a photo op when he saw one and summoned a local news photographer. As the four musicians gathered around a piano, a shot was snapped.
SCAN THIS SYMBOL WITH THE E+ APP TO BUY TICKETS!
It ran the next day in the Memphis Press-Scimitar with the caption “Million Dollar Quartet,” a name that has stuck to this day. It’s fortuitous, then, that Phillips kept the tape running when the newsman left. The four musicians ran through some 40 songs, from gospel spirituals and country standards, to covers of songs by Chuck Berry and bluegrass giant Bill Monroe — most of the ingredients in the stew that became known as rock ’n’ roll). Million Dollar Quartet, the stage musical that retells this story, features 22 songs, from “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Fever” and “Memories Are Made of This,” to “Down by the Riverside,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Long Tall Sally,” “Peace in the Valley,” “Great Balls of Fire” and “Hound Dog.” Million Dollar Quartet ran for 61 weeks on Broadway in the 2010-11 season and earned three Tony Award nominations: best musical, best book of a musical and best featured actor (for Levi Kreis, who played Lewis). This tour features Gabe Bowling (offBroadway’s My Big Gay Italian Wedding) as Perkins; Colte Julian as Lewis; Scott Moreau as Cash; and Jacob Rowley as Presley.

etween them, the Temptations and the Four Tops have more than 100 years of experience and such hits as “Ain’t No Woman Like the One I Got,” “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “It’s All in the Game,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me),” “My Girl,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” and “Walk Away Renee.” The Motown heavyweights are partnering to co-headline this show, which will feature plenty of hits and just as many slick dance moves. The Temps won Grammy awards in 1968, 1972 (two) and in 2000, with the album Ear-Resistible, and have recorded, to date, more than 50 albums. The initial five-man lineup formed in Detroit in 1961 as a merger

of two local vocal groups, the Primes and the Distants. In 1964, the group joined writer/producer Smokey Robinson in the recording studio and left with “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” the first of 37 career Top 10 hits. The Four Tops, originally called the Four Aims, made their first Motown hit, “Baby I Need Your Loving,” in 1964, but they go back to the early 1950s as Detroit high schoolers. Unlike the Temptations, who have seen multiple lineup changes over the years, the Tops spent more than four decades without a single personnel change. The Four Tops and the Temptations joined the Supremes as one of Motown’s top-tier acts and most consistent hitmakers. A bit of trivia: Four Tops’ frontman Levi Stubbs, provided the voice for Audrey, the blood-sucking carnivorous plant in the 1986 feature film Little Shop of Horrors.

PEPPA PIG’S SURPRISE | Sept. 24, 5 p.m.
PEPPA COMES TO LIFE ONSTAGE
P
eppa isn’t just any old pig. She comes with a pedigree. She and the humans who created her have won numerous awards from the British Academy and animated film festivals. Peppa Pig first surfaced in the Colonies (that means the United States) on the Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. TV channels. She is a lovable cheeky little piggy who lives with her little brother, George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig. Her favorite things include playing games, dressing up and jumping in muddy puddles. Her adventures always end with loud snorts of laughter. In the stage show Peppa Pig’s Surprise, Peppa is playing outside with friends on a lovely day. Mummy and Daddy have a surprise for her and George but, try as they might, the little piggies can’t figure out what it is.
SCAN THIS SYMBOL WITH THE E+ APP TO BUY TICKETS!
Each of Peppa’s pals is a species of mammal. They all wear clothes and live in houses but still display some characteristics of the animals on which they are based. Peppa, George and their parents snort during conversations, for example, while the other animals make their own noises when talking. The rabbit family squeaks with its enjoyment of carrots. This live, interactive performance features fun, games and — as the title suggests — surprises. It includes new songs and dances and life-size puppets that walk, talk and jump. Here’s a brief review from one dad: “My kids (5, 3 and 1) all love Peppa Pig. It is funny, lighthearted and captures the innocence of childhood perfectly. Everything is simple and straightforward with plenty of funny moments.” This tour is visiting more than 70 cities across the country, including here at the Cobb Energy Centre. Feel free to snort if that makes you happy. More: peppapiglive.com

JOHN MULANEY | Sept. 30, 7 + 10 p.m.
J
ohn Mulaney, a comedian and Emmy Award-winning writer (“Saturday Night Live,” 2011), has been selling out his Kid Gorgeous tour and adding shows all across the country since mid-May. He began his career in New York’s East Village and was most recently seen on the New York stage in Oh, Hello on Broadway with comic Nick Kroll, a buddy from their days at Georgetown University, where Mulaney studied English lit. The comedy ran three months. Both Oh, Hello on Broadway and Mulaney’s hourlong stand-up special “The Comeback Kid” are available on Netflix. The A.V. Club, a pop-culture website, called “The Comeback Kid” the best hour of Mulaney’s career. He’s done other stand-up specials as well, including “The Top Part” and “New in Town,” both of which became comedy albums. Critic Ben Brantley, writing in The New York Times, said that Oh, Hello, like most good theater, “exhales the transporting joy of actors’ becoming someone else so completely and infectiously that on some level we become them as well and adopt whatever warped worldview they’re selling us.” Mulaney also was the creator and star of the Fox sitcom “Mulaney,” a semiautobiographical series that aired for three months in 2014/15. In 2008, Mulaney began writing for “SNL,” where he appeared as a Weekend Update correspondent and co-created such characters as “Stefon” with Bill Hader. These

days he writes for “Documentary Now” on the IFC cable channel and “Big Mouth,” an animated series debuting this month on Netflix (he’s the voice of a character named Andrew). His work has brought him an additional eight Emmy nominations. At age 7, John was invited to audition for the role of Kevin in the movie Home Alone, but his parents declined. In junior high, he and a pal would offer to perform skits about what they’d learned instead of writing reports. John also was known to frequent Chicago’s Museum of Broadcast Communications to watch archived episodes of “I Love Lucy” and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” Entertainment Weekly has called the 35-year-old Chicago native “one of the best stand-up comics alive.” More: mulaney.com
