Dear Broadway Patrons,

Once again I have the privilege of welcoming you to the Ohio Theatre. Whether you’re a long-time Broadway in Columbus subscriber or this is your first time in the theatre, I thank you, on behalf of everyone at CAPA, for the opportunity to share in an evening of making memories with friends and/or family.

We’re extending a special welcome this week to students participating in our 2024-25 Broadway in the Classroom program. This program offers curriculum-based arts education opportunities for students at Title 1 high schools. Along the way, it also introduces the creativity, energy, and magic of Broadway to young people who will become the next generation of Broadway lovers.

You can learn more about Broadway in the Classroom on another page of this program, but I wanted to share a bit about why CAPA’s Education & Engagement programming is so important.

It’s been CAPA’s mission from the start to serve as a steward of spaces where the arts can happen. But we are also one of many organizations and institutions in Central Ohio who serve as stewards of the art form itself. We take seriously our responsibility as presenter, facilitator, and producer of the performing arts, recognizing the contributions the arts make to both a vibrant culture and a healthy economy.

But education takes our stewardship even further. The arts enrich lives not only on a collective level but on an individual one. Providing any number of touchpoints for young people to engage in the arts at whatever level they are comfortable opens doors, whether to becoming an artist or a lifelong patron. These are the kinds of impact that come from our Education & Engagement programs.

A special thanks to Amy Handra, CAPA’s Director of Education & Engagement and Crystal Satterfield, our Education Specialist, for bringing to fruition these programs that are making a difference in our community and in the lives of the people who live here.

PRICE,

‘JUKEBOX

MUSICAL’ IS NOT A DIRTY WORD

The Tony Award winner wants to erase the stigma of what a musical with preexisting songs can be.

Broadway’s new jukebox musical & Juliet first opened in England at the Manchester Opera House in September 2019. After a move to the West End, British producers eyed a Main Stem transfer, and they thought of just the American producer to partner with them. When they asked Eva Price, a Tony Award winner for the gritty 2019 Oklahoma! revival, the producer recalled: “How quickly could ‘yes’ come out of my mouth?”

Price isn’t afraid to admit (or the word she’d more likely use: declare) that she loves a jukebox musical. “When they’re good,” she clarified.

“I love a jukebox musical and I love an intelligentsia, high culture,

STORY

elite, smart play or musical,” Price said. “I actually felt, for the first time, I was seeing something [in & Juliet] that meshed both.” And she argues that jukebox musicals actually shouldn’t be one or the other.

Over the past 20 seasons, Broadway has reliably presented at least one jukebox musical each season (with the sole exception of 2007-2008). Still, only two jukebox musicals in that two-decade span won the Tony Award for Best Musical (Jersey Boys and Moulin Rouge!) and only five have ever played more than 1,000 Broadway performances (although Mamma Mia! is the ninth-longest-running Broadway show of all time).

Whether it’s the lack of critical or financial success (or another factor entirely), “jukebox musical” is a label many shy away from for fear of its negative connotation.

Part of that emanates from a stigma of using preexisting material, as the perception can be that this makes for an easier creative process. “I actually think, in some ways, writing the book for a jukebox musical—when it’s good—is harder,” Price said.

“Let’s just say Mamma Mia! and & Juliet, specifically,” Price said. “They’re wholly original stories that are connecting the songs, and I think & Juliet does it best in which the songs feel like they’re written for that book.” (Price recounted the proud story of her parents seeing the musical for the first time and telling her, “I can’t believe he wrote all these songs for this musical!”)

Of course, music mega-producer and songwriter Max Martin didn’t write the 29 songs that are in & Juliet specifically for the show, but Tony-nominated book writer David West Read worked hard to make it seem like that was the case. That cleverness, in Price’s mind, is what renders a jukebox musical “good.”

But Price also views the genre as an opportunity for Broadway, especially in this time of rebuilding after the pandemic shutdown. “More shows that bring in new audiences are actually important for the Street and for the industry,” Price said. Like the popular music at the center of the show, & Juliet is for the masses. As Price said, “Our target audience, I think, is anyone with a heartbeat.”

So far, Price’s instincts about adding this specific jukebox musical to her producing roster and bringing it to Broadway have answered a need in this moment. As she said, “What I think we also need as culture-seekers and audiences is joy.”

“What is one of those things that reminds us of good? Nostalgia. What’s nostalgic? Music,” Price continued.

“We were a show that I think people had low expectations about coming into Broadway,” Price confided. Yet & Juliet went on to earn nine Tony nominations. “It’s telling the world that musicals and plays of all shapes and sizes of all genres are here,” Price said, including jukebox musicals. “They’re selling tickets, they’re getting nominations, they’re impacting the conversation.”

BROADWAY IN THE CLASSROOM

Among the audience members for this week’s run of & Juliet here at the Ohio Theatre are participants in CAPA’s Broadway in the Classroom program.

Broadway in the Classroom introduces students from Title 1 schools to musical theatre during an engaging, curriculum-based program.

The goal of Broadway in the Classroom is to use the power of Broadway to serve as a tool to enhance curriculum and introduce Broadway to the next generation.

CAPA Education & Engagement staff works closely with schools to implement an in-depth curriculum that explores the educational components of a Broadway show. The students also attend the Broadway show when it comes to Columbus, providing them with a unique and memorable theatre experience.

Participating schools engage in six weeks of show-related curriculum developed by their teacher and CAPA and aligned with Ohio Department of Education standards. At the end of the six weeks, students attend a Broadway show, share their final projects, and have the chance to connect with cast and crew members from the tour.

“This program is an opportunity for us to use Broadway as a curriculum tool in the classroom. It gives students the chance to

experience an arts medium they might not otherwise be exposed to, while also providing them with a field trip experience that brings the classroom learning to life,” CAPA Director of Education & Engagement Amy Handra said.

This school year, the Broadway in the Classroom program is working with students from Columbus International High School.

CAPA’s role is to serve as a resource to the educator over the sixweek unit, visiting the school twice to observe a lesson on mutually set days and times. CAPA also provides resources for the educator, including access to supplemental materials for students to use, and the option to have a local teaching artist visit their classroom during the engagement.

The six-week unit must culminate with a final project (group or individual) that students will use to synthesize what they have learned.

On February 21, students will attend a pre-show reception, a performance of & Juliet at the Ohio Theatre, and a post-show talkback with cast members.

Students at Columbus Africentric Early College benefitted from the program in 2023-24, and their teacher said it made a big impression.

“Your generosity has allowed our students to experience the magic of Broadway right in their own backyard, creating lasting memories and inspiring a love for the performing arts,” Tyrell Reggins, acting/ performing arts teacher at Africentric, wrote to CAPA staff and Broadway in Columbus season subscribers. “The impact of your contributions reaches far beyond the stage, enriching the lives of our young learners and fostering a passion for creativity.”

Thanks to the generosity of our subscribers, donors, and sponsors, the program covers all costs, including tickets and transportation Indeed, all of CAPA’s Education and Engagement programs are 100% funded by donations.

CAPA’s other Education and Engagement programs include El Dia de los Ninos (Day of the Children), Schooled on Poetry, ARISE and of course, the CAPA Marquee Awards. This year-long educational program offers selected high schools the opportunity to participate in professional theatre education activities throughout the school year including master classes with Broadway touring artists and skills-based workshops with local and regional artists and which culminate with a red-carpet ceremony and student showcase at the Ohio Theatre.
