between us
If someone asked me what inspires me most about the middle-school students I know, I would have to say, it’s their courage. Like Henry in The Red Badge of Courage, these young people’s worlds are drastically changing, physically and emotionally, while they handle it all with profound ideas and wild, wonderful humor. Playwright Scott Warren and I wish to thank the 100-plus middleschool students who shared their stories with us. We hope the play reflects the joys, challenges and complexities of their middle-school skirmishes. When asked, often a few students would respond, “I cannot remember a single time when I was courageous.” It actually takes courage to say that — and it also takes courage to share stories when you are petrified about what people will think of you. While our hero, Hank, uses video games to help him sort out his life encounters, some of our middleschool contributors used writing to share their wisdom. This short excerpt from an essay on courage, penned by Paideia student Fernanda Widdowson, is a valuable reminder for any age. “I need a class where the social barrier has dissolved. Now, we are really not doing too well. Some of the kids higher up the social ladder may think there is no popular and unpopular in our class, but if you step down the ladder and see things from someone else’s point of view, I bet you will find a different answer.” Amen.
Many Blessings,
Rosemary Newcott The Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth & Families ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

The Alliance Theatre Institute for Educators & Teaching Artists presents The Dramaturgy by Students Program The participating ‘Jr. Dramaturgs’ at Counterpane Montessori and Garrett Middle School reflect on the themes and events of the book, The Red Badge of Courage and the play it inspired, Courage. For more Courage student reflections from Mabry Middle School, please stop by the Joseph R. Bankoff Gallery on the first floor of the Robert W. Woodruff Arts Center. The Beginning of Courage: The Source Material and The Civil War Connection The Civil War was fought from 1861-1865 and began when 7 Southern slave states announced their secession from the Union of the United States. The Confederates were the Southern side of the war. They lost, but went down in history as the ‘Rebels’. The Union, or the Yankees as they were known, was the northern side of the war. They won and restored the Union and a future without slavery. After 4 bloody years of war, over 600,00 soldiers from the North and the South had died.
Battle of Chancellorsville The Battle of Chancellorsville was a major battle in the American Civil War that lasted from April 30th to May 6th in 1863, and resulted in a Confederate victory. The Union side was led by Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker, and the Confederate army by Robert E. Lee. During the battle, the famous Rebel general, Stonewall Jackson, was shot by accidentally by his own troops, and died 8 days later. The Union side lost around 14,000 casualties, the Rebels 10,000 - but the Rebels had paid a high price in losing Stonewall Jackson. Despite that, though, many people still consider the Battle of Chancellorsville to be Lee's greatest victory.
The 124th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, or the Orange Blossoms, fought at the Battle of Chancellorsville. They are believed by many to be an inspiration for the fictional 304th New York Volunteer Infantry from the book, Red Badge of Courage . 124th NY Volunteer Infantry Regiment, nicknamed ‘The Orange Blossoms” as they were from Orange County in New York, entered the Union army on September 5, 1862 with 930 men. They had a sharpshooter recruited for this regiment. The colonels were, Augustus Van Horne Ellis and Francis M. Cummins. They fought in battles from November 5, 1862 to April 9, 1865. They fought a total of 38 battles including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.

The Alliance values excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. Reaching more than 200,000 patrons annually, the Alliance delivers powerful programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, the Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance Theatre, in 2007, received the Regional Theatre Tony Award in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 80 original productions including Tony Award winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice, and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. The Alliance has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring, and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act: The Musical, Come Fly Away, Bring It On: The Musical, Stephen King and John Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the American premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings, and most recently, Bull Durham and Harmony — A New Musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman. The work produced by the Alliance gives locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Each year the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department reaches close to 50,000 students through performances, acting classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level, from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to the groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance also offers community education classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development, working with local and national playwrights. An active participant in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatrical techniques to aid in student learning through storytelling and problem-solving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K – 2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Education Department as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access. The Alliance delivers the finest talent, art and educational opportunities for Atlanta audiences — proving once again that the Alliance is where great theatre lives. alliancetheatre.org or 404.733.4650

Middle-schooler Michael Yelton, a 12 year-old seventh grader at The Museum school, answers the Alliance Theatre’s questions about courage, survival and learning about others. Q: What makes a middle-school student courageous? A: School in general is an experience similar to having a baby. It’s an excruciatingly hard thing to get through, but looking back on it, you’re so glad you did it, and it will benefit you in the future. Though however hard it may be, there is always something to look forward to, no matter how big or small, that drives us through. It is usually different things for different people, like maybe it’s getting a good grade on a test you barely studied for, or maybe it’s gaining a friend that you can always rely on. Whatever it is, these are the things that people really trudge through hard and boring classes to get to. Q: What survival advice would you give to someone just beginning middle school? A: There are infinite unspoken rules everyone strives to follow in a school. However, only a select few are ones that you will really need to survive middle school. These are the mandatory rules that you’ll always need in life in general. First, keep your head held high, but not too high. You should be confident in yourself wherever you go, but don’t overdo it and become an egotistical weirdo. Second, keep your priorities straight. Of course, we all want to have fun in school, but don’t let it take over your needs. Lastly, always, ALWAYS, whatever you do, don’t lose touch of who you are. Your main weapon and your best strength is always your personality. Q: What did you learn about others by being a part of the Alliance Theatre Middle School Collision Project? A: I learned that not everyone has the same mindset as me. We all operate differently, and we all learn differently. I also learned that this doesn’t always have to be a problem. You can still make something that you envisioned while also keeping it in everyone else’s vision too. You can work around and incorporate everyone else’s dream, just as you can share the spotlight. Everyone wants something different, and you have to incorporate everyone else’s ideas in a project so that it’s not all just you. Because that gets rid of the point of having a group in the first place.

HONORING VETERANS Detection at an early, curable stage can save lives! Donors to the WellStar Foundation are sponsoring responsible screening and care for veterans at risk for lung cancer. Veterans who meet criteria for being at risk for lung cancer, due to smoking or exposure to certain chemicals, will be offered a low-dose lung CT scan at a reduced rate of $11 (regularly $199*). In addition, veterans will receive a FREE Pulmonary Risk Assessment to test for COPD as well as possible sleep disorders, compliments of WellStar Medical Group, Pulmonary Medicine. Screening spaces are limited. To register or for more information, please call 770-956-STAR (7827).
This screening is made possible thanks to support from the WellStar Pulmonary Network, WellStar Cancer Network and generous donors to WellStar Foundation.
To help with a donation, please visit wellstar.org/kellfund. * Offer only valid for baseline screening exam. Prices are available for a limited time.
