between us
“I cleared a space and rigged a runway and waited for my muse to take the controls.” Thus wrote Ken Kesey on the process of writing the seminal 1962 work of raucous American literature, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It just kind of happened. I love that. I am actively relieved by that notion that sometimes we can’t really dissect the genesis of a work of art, a gem of literature, a really good idea. Like Justice Potter Stewart famously said of obscenity, “I know it when I see it.” The corollary here is that we know it when we feel it. We know that something matters, that it’s going to have an impact on us longer than the time we spend making it/observing it — and often we know that without words. Now understand, I’m a words girl from way back. Like them. Use a lot of them. Trust them as my road maps both into an artistic process and describing one after the fact. But this show is different. I can’t really assemble the words to tell you why here, why now, why like this. I can tell you that I reread the story a few years back and heard some very familiar voices in my head. Actors I knew well. And something that I couldn’t articulate but I knew it when I felt it indicated that maybe it was a really important project to take on at the Alliance. [
].
That’s the space where the rational discourse would be if that was what was driving this. But instead there is a cleared space, a runway and a gut feeling that it matters a lot to do this play right now, with these people, right here. Call it a muse, call it a hunch. But do me a favor? See if you can react with your gut tonight before you react with words. The words can come later.

Atlanta’s best actors populate season-opening ‘Cuckoo’s Nest’ By Julie Bookman “King Lear. A Trip to Bountiful. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. These are among the plays you don’t do,” says Alliance Theatre Jennings Hertz Artistic Director Susan V. Booth, “unless you know you’ve got your leads locked in.” Cuckoo’s Nest, based on Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel, is full of rich roles, as one might expect with its mental hospital setting. Booth is specifically referring to the two most pivotal characters: the defiant Randle Patrick McMurphy who has faked insanity to avoid prison, and the steely Nurse Ratched, ruler of the psychiatric ward. (Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher earned Oscars for their work in the 1975 film. Kirk Douglas played McMurphy in the 1963 Broadway original.) “I knew Tess Malis Kincaid had a Ratched in her,” says Booth. “She’s proved that more than a few times in other roles.” Alliance

audiences saw her as Barbara Fordham in the theater’s staging of August: Osage County, for which she won a Suzi Bass Award, as well as many performances at Georgia Shakespeare and her indelible turn as the spurned wife in The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? at Actor’s Express in 2004. But the role of McMurphy, notes Booth, is trickier. “He’s simultaneously got to be wildly charismatic, just a hair off-center, and dangerous and vulnerable in equal measure.” When Booth directed Neal A. Ghant last season in Natasha Trethewey’s Native Guard, she was “blown away by his range.” Later, when Ghant was rehearsing Pearl Cleage’s Blues for an Alabama Sky, Booth sought the playwright’s opinion. “She confirmed an instinct that he would be very, very right,” Booth reports. And so here we are. The Atlanta acting pool “goes seriously deep” with character actors, Booth says, and Cuckoo’s Nest presents an “impossibly rich showcase” for that talent. She was excited to slot such well-established Atlanta actors as Andrew Benator, David de Vries, Richard Garner, Chris ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG 13

Kayser, Eric Mendenhall and Anthony P. Rodriguez in some of the quirky supporting roles. She knew “these crazy-smart and fearless gents,” would “happily dive into the play’s psychological complexity.” To prepare for McMurphy, who’s rarely offstage, Ghant memorized his lines before rehearsals began. “I put myself through some rigor,” he says. “I don’t often start as early as I started working on this one. But I understand the demands required here.” It helps, he says, to be sharing the stage with so many familiar faces. “We all know each other, we know what each other is capable of, we’re all excited and want this to be something great.” The book has far more detail than Dale Wasserman’s stage adaptation, and Booth encouraged her actors to go to the original source. “You know,” she says, “if you go back to Ken Kesey’s brilliant novel, this is a story about the power of the state and the powerlessness of the individual when the state is allowed too much authority.” The novel “has given me the angle as to how I want to approach the character,” says Ghant. While the Cuckoo’s Nest story is disturbing, Ghant appreciates its kindness. “Randle P. McMurphy, yeah, he’s roguish and rude — but there’s a lot of compassion that comes from him. That’s what has really struck me: The draw-the-line-in-the-sand approach to caring.” He also likes that the story is personal, edgy and fun. “This is a serious play,” he says, “but we’re also going to have some fun.” As McMurphy says, “You got to laugh — ’specially when things ain’t funny.” Speaking of fun, Ghant is “ecstatic” that he gets to share time again with Kincaid, with whom he worked on Georgia Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus in 2009. “Nobody brings the kind of presence to the stage that Tess Malis Kincaid brings,” he says. “She carries herself with a

regalness. She can be loving, nurturing, powerful and literally frightening when she wants to be. That’s going to play really nicely.” Kincaid, likewise, can’t say enough about Ghant. “I adore him. He’s a chameleon, and he’s ageless. He can play anything from a sexy, cool dude to the most vulnerable, damaged individual, to someone incredibly powerful.” Kincaid is drawn to the classics and comedy. “I love being goofy, a wee bit wacky.” But she also appreciates the chance “to dig into something like this that terrifies me. I like the challenge of finding the fierce nature within a character.” The fact that the coolly domineering Ratched is such an iconic role can be a little scary, Kincaid says. “People will come in with certain expectations. It’s my job to get them to let go of their preconceived notions.” Kincaid considers Ratched a powerful responsibility. And suspects every cast member feels the same about their character. “It’s a thrill to be invited to the party,” she says. A

‘Bearing Witness. Giving Voice.’ More than a century after it was built, the Oregon State Insane Asylum still cares for patients, though under a more politically correct (and less stigmatic) moniker: the Oregon State Hospital. No longer an institution relegated to housing and treating — with sometimes barbaric methods — the mentally ill, and even those who weren’t necessarily so, the hospital is now home to its own mental health museum, shedding light on an arguably dark period in the evolution of psychiatric treatment. Upon arrival at the museum, each visitor receives a unique identification badge of a patient, staff worker or notable visitor. Each coded badge corresponds to stories and artifacts relevant to that particular person, illustrated through a series of historical “modules,” which are updated as new details and artifacts emerge, keeping the content fresh and interesting to repeat visitors. discover us. discover you. discover us. discover you. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest powerfully tells a story that is as old as the Greek tragedies: the struggle of the individual against an unreasonable totalitarian authority. In his 1962 work, Ken Kesey brilliantly employs a state asylum for the insane with its manipulative and vindictive head nurse as a metaphor for the evil of an all-powerful and arbitrary authority. Fortunately, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest has little to do with modern psychiatry. Just as McMurphy struggles against unreasonable authority in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, so we must, too, fight for the rights of all people with brain disorders to receive the respect and the appropriate care that they deserve.
Mark H. Rapaport, M.D. Reunette W. Harris professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Emory University Chief of Psychiatric Services, Emory Healthcare, Atlanta, Ga.
synopsis: why this play? One of the most memorable characters in American literature, Randle P. McMurphy contrives to serve a six-month prison sentence in a mental institution rather than on a prison work farm. On the ward, he clashes with the head nurse, the iconic character Nurse Ratched. As McMurphy continues to challenge Nurse Ratched’s authority, her retribution is swift and terrifying. Winner of the 2001 Outer Critics Circle Award for outstanding revival, a Tony Award for best revival and the inspiration for an Academy Awardwinning film.

The Alliance’s dedication to providing access to the arts is reflected in its commitment to creating new work for all ages and bringing that work into classrooms and communities throughout the region. More than 50,000 students each year experience age-specific professional performances and participate in acting classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives through the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department. The Alliance’s groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young performances offer professionally produced, fully interactive theater for infants and toddlers; the Palefsky Collision Project invites high school artists to create and perform new civic-minded theater based on a classic text; and community acting classes and skill-building workshops engage professional artists, young actors, business leaders and curious learners of all ages. Twice recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for leadership in arts education, the Alliance Arts for Learning Institute equips classroom teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum and have been empirically proven to improve student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. The work produced by the Alliance allows locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. The vision of the Alliance Theatre is to be a beacon of leadership for the national field, while remaining deeply rooted in and reflective of our local Atlanta community. alliancetheatre.org or 404.733.4650

ECT: Ask the Experts The Alliance Theatre posed a few questions to the faculty of Emory’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences about electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and how it is used today.
Emory’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is a part of the Emory Brain Health Center. The center provides comprehensive, coordinated, family-centered care for patients with psychiatric and neurological disorders in the Southeast and beyond.
emoryhealthcare.org/brainhealth 42 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
What is ECT? ECT works by electrically stimulating the brain to release neurotransmitters that restore normal brain circuitry.
Why is ECT used? Modern use of ECT is highly effective for people with persistent mood disorders or manias, particularly those who have been unresponsive to traditional medications.
Is ECT safe? How has ECT changed over the years? Yes, ECT is quite safe, and modern-day ECT is done with at least two doctors (an anesthesiologist and a psychiatrist) in the room monitoring the patient. ECT is performed under anesthesia and is painless. This was not always the case even 30 years ago, but around 1980 several advances in equipment and treatments made the procedure much safer. About this same time, the National Institute of Mental Health set up protocols that Emory now uses for performing ECT. These protocols greatly improved the safety and efficacy of this treatment.
THE WOODRUFF CIRCLE Woodruff Circle members each contribute more than $250,000 annually to support the arts and education work of the Woodruff Arts Center, Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and High Museum of Art. We are deeply grateful to these 36 partners who lead our efforts to ensure the arts thrive in our community.
