but oh, so close to home Could it be time for a ‘near-cation’? Here are 6 to try By Julie Bookman

“Even one day at the handsomely plush fullservice spa can work wonders for the mind, body, soul and senses....”

Atlanta Evergreen Marriott Conference Resort Distance from Atlanta: About 30 minutes Stone Mountain Park is an easy day trip for metro residents, but spending a night or two makes it a more leisurely and, perhaps, special getaway. The comfy 336-room Evergreen Marriott resort is for those who crave tranquility before and after their adventures. It rests alongside the pretty 6-acre Stone Mountain Lake (request a room overlooking the water). Rates start at $159. Park your car and never get in it again 12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

until you head home. Guests rave about the resort’s complimentary shuttle service, which lets you scoot past slower traffic to reach park attractions. The fun includes hiking adventures; the Georgia Justice Wild West Train Show (old-fashioned slapstick comedy); and Geyser Towers, an obstacle course-playscape where you can get soaked to the bones if you want to. The longtime Lasershow Spectacular has been updated with three cannons that send flames 80 feet into the air. New fireworks seem to dance on the water at the base of the mountain. You can opt to spend the afternoon with poolside cocktails and an occasional dip in the large outdoor pool. Evergreen

f you’re in that cravingescape-but-zero-time state of mind, consider a near-cation. Who knew that you really can get away from it all in less time than it takes to reach Hartsfield-Jackson airport, trudge through security and shove stuff into the overhead compartment? The vast and serene Château Élan Winery & Resort will seem worlds away, but it’s a quick hop up I-85, in Braselton. This pristine resort offers the elegant understatement of a French country estate, catering to serious golfers, serious winers-and-diners and anyone who’s seriously in love with spa services done to the nines. Or choose I-75 to reach Barnsley Resort in Adairsville. It’s equally impressive, but another place altogether. With golf, kayaking, fishing, bird shooting, horseback riding and more, it’s a frequent choice for everything from hunting parties and bachelorette weekends to romantic getaways and family reunions. These are but two of a half-dozen nearby sanctuaries of sanity. Read on for something that suits your style and wallet.

STONE MOUNTAIN, CALLAWAY GARDENS, LEGACY LODGE

also has two championship golf courses, two restaurants, a spa, a health club and an indoor pool. You can canoe or kayak on the lake but must bring your own boat and paddles. The 92-room “Southern-style” Stone Mountain Inn, across from the famous Memorial Carving, is another lodging option (room rates from $139). Both park hotels offer some discounts for overnight guests. Check the Web and ask the properties about deals and packages. Barnsley Resort Distance from Atlanta: About 1 hour As soon as you drive into this bucolic property, you’ll feel that you’ve stepped back in time.

You may also be delighted that this postcard-pretty spot honors some of the finer Southern traditions with all the modern comforts and amenities, too. All guests stay in 36 Englishstyle cottages, each distinctly different than the next. The cottages line quiet, meticulously manicured streets bearing such names as Rose Way and Manor House Lane. If you walk along the residential lanes, you won’t see a car. Vehicles are nearby but cleverly tucked away. You might wander upon a tree swing here, a hammock or gazebo over there and even arrange a visit with the Fairy Godmother, who can cast upon you an “Ultimate Love Spell” or leave treats for the kids.

Furnishings and décor might remind you of Southern Living magazine. Overnight rates range from $299 for a double room to $749 for a one-bedroom private cottage. Multi-bedroom cottages can cost as much $2,303 per night. Two-night minimum stays are required most weekends. Pets are welcome. A trip to the reimagined ruins of the old Barnsley mansion is a must. The once-grand Italianate mansion has a tragically romantic past. It was built in the 1840s by Godfrey Barnsley, a British cotton broker and shipping magnate who needed to move his beloved wife, Julia, out of Savannah for health reasons. She died in 1845, before the mansion was completed. Union soldiers camped there during the Civil War and a 1906 tornado tore the roof off. The saga contains much drama; a museum in the former kitchen is well worth your time. A fitness center and sparkling-blue swimming pool overlook a velvety golf course. Spa treatments can be

14 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

booked; guests 18 and older can access a steam room, sauna and whirlpool. Add-ons include private wine tastings, kayaking and canoeing, and trail rides on horseback. Barnsley’s 1,800-acre SpringBank Plantation is a bird-hunting preserve. Lessons, guides and hunting dogs are all available. A shooting-spa package for two can be had for $660 per night). Ask about seasonal specials (including this summer’s Family Fun offer) or last-minute “Smart Stay” deals. For prime weekends (spring, fall, holidays, Valentine’s Day), you’d best book several months in advance. Callaway Gardens Distance from Atlanta: About 90 minutes A prized retreat for Atlantans since 1952, this resort has figured out how to be something for everybody: nature lovers, water bugs, golfers and zip-lining daredevils. It’s a return choice for families, romantic weekends and reunions of all sizes.

Lodging comes in various forms, from traditional hotel rooms at the Mountain Creek Inn ($99-$189), to the Southern Pine Cottages ($229-$389) or two- to four-bedroom Mountain Creek Villas ($179-$779). Ten miles of bike trails wind through 6,500 acres of brilliant greenery and blooms. Ten lighted tennis courts are tucked within a forested grove. Golfers can choose between Mountain View and Lake View. Sunbathers frequent “the world’s largest manmade white-sand beach” along 65-acre Robin Lake, where wakeboarding, water skiing and tubing are available. You’ll also find miniature golf, volleyball, shuffleboard and disc golf, and lots more. On weekend and holiday evenings now through Sept. 12, the lake is the setting for the Summer Sunset Music Series. Other choices: the Day Butterfly Center, home to butterflies

from all over the world (bring a spray bottle of water, it’s warm here) and TreeTop Adventure, a 90-minute zip-lining course that’s not for the faint of heart or anyone under 54 inches tall ($35 per person). There’s an all-new “sapling course” for those 36 to 60 inches tall ($15 per person). Day-trippers pay admission to Callaway Gardens ($20, $10 ages 6-12), but that fee is waived for those staying overnight. Château Élan Winery & Resort Distance from Atlanta: 40 minutes This 3,500-acre property has the most relaxed vibe imaginable. Even one day at the handsomely plush full-service spa can work wonders for the mind, body, soul and senses. gradually ever since, with strong attention paid to every detail. Emulating the elegant understatement of a grand estate in the French countryside, it features a hotel and conference center with 275 guest rooms ($189 and up, with deals available such as a two-night “Summer Lovin’” package). Rooms are soothingly gracious and comfortable, in color schemes that center on robin’s-egg blue with muted golds and creams — all shades meant to evoke the sun-kissed Mediterranean. (You can also inquire about booking high-end “villas.”) Everything is “just so” here, and fairly perfect, for as far as the eye can see. If you need to sooth and revitalize — and can afford it — book one of the 14 luxury guest suites inside the Spa Mansion ($350-$500). While the Spa at Château Élan caters to hotel guests and day visitors, and offers things like a “Sparty” for girlfriends, it can seem magically surreal to book your room here. Overnight spa guests get champagne upon check-in. Their spacious lakeview “suite

18 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

rooms” include custom-upholstered sleigh beds, a waterfall shower and an ultra-deep air-jet pedestal soaking tub that one guest called “heaven on Earth.” Those sleeping in the Spa Mansion quietly saunter about in thick and sublimely soft blue robes. These guests alone can use the standard spa features around the clock. A late-night visit to the steam room or sauna, followed by a solo dip in the indoor 86-degree resistance pool — complete with dimmed lighting and fine music choices — can ease the way to a wonderful night’s sleep. Château Élan is popular with couples and golfers, who can choose from among four courses (one is private), considered among the best around. The service here is impeccable — never fussy, intrusive or overbearing. Your friendly and courteous staffer remains in the background — supremely efficient only if and when you have a need. (But you probably have everything you need, sigh, and more than you had dared hoped for).

At Château Élan Winery & Resort, comfort is key and details are important, from the vineyards to the guest rooms.

Historic Banning Mills Distance from Atlanta: About 45 minutes The woodsy Banning Mills is so close — 19 miles south of Douglasville and 45 minutes west of Hartsfield-Jackson airport — that you can feel a little guilty spending the night. Which brings us to a key point: This is a terrific place for a day trip, too. But if you’ve always wanted to sleep in a tree house, this is your chance. Set on 300 acres within Carroll County’s Snake Creek Gorge, it’s a uniquely intriguing blend of rustic and comfortable. Surrounded by untamed nature, it feels a bit like an old-timey camp. You can wear your cut-offs here. Banning Mills beckons visitors with adventurous challenges ranging from a 14-story climbing wall to some of the most exciting zip-lining around. “You could go to Banning Mills and have a sedate weekend,” says Beth Balga of Sandy Springs, who’s visited twice, “but

20 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

why would you? It’s a place for pushing yourself to the limit.” The nonprofit resort and conference center has a history that stretches back to the days of the Creek and Cherokee nations. It’s named for a ghost and is a frequent choice for youth groups, families and outdoorsy types. Proceeds go toward educational and conservation programs. One- and two-story Tree House Rooms for two are $209 for the first night and $189 each night thereafter. Additional guests are $30 each per night. You’ll hardly be roughing it in your tree. Your “house” includes a king-sized bed, microwave, fridge, gas-log fireplace, bathroom, jetted tub for two and a covered deck overlooking the gorge. A full country-style breakfast is included each day. Other accommodations start at $99 per night. The 10-mile Screaming Eagle Zip Line is one of the longest and most extensive canopy tours in the world (beginning at $49). Other options: horseback riding, skeet shooting, creekside hikes

Legacy Lodge, Lake Lanier Islands Resort Distance from Atlanta: About 65 minutes A jaunt up to Lake Lanier can be as wild — or as tame — as you like. But it’s especially the place if you want thrills, chills and water action. Rent a party boat, hit the water park or tuck yourself away on the edge of the beach. “Upscale rustic” describes the décor of the spacious rooms in the Legacy Lodge ($189-$229), which caters to families and those without kids. Lakeview villas on the golf course and family-friendly lake houses are also available. Check out the “Packages” menu on the website to find lodging deals, from golf packages to “Sip and Zip,” which includes zip-lining, cocktails and breakfast for two (about $329 per night).

A new “Love on the Lake” option for two (about $389 per night) includes a four-hour pontoon boat rental, use of a resort cart for four hours each day and breakfast. LanierWorld is a splash-happy wonderland for those who like plenty of crazy action and don’t mind crowds. This huge water park has Georgia’s largest wave pool and requires separate admission (adult daylong pass is $39.99). One of the new features: the CAT 4 Slide and Thunderbolt Zipline Experience, where riders on hard-bottomed tubes slide down a dry high hill, shoot out over the heads of those on a boardwalk and splash into the lake. Seriously. LanierWorld combo packages are an option for overnight guests. You can also skip the rides and hit just the beach ($10 weekdays, $15 weekends). For super-adventurous types, there’s Lake Lanier Canopy Tours ($30-$100 per person), with more than 8,500 feet of zipping along the lake’s scenic shoreline.

wo sing-alongs await you as the 2015 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival at the Fox Theatre continues this month and next. Perhaps the biggest news? A Frozen sing-along. Yes, a sing-along to the uber-popular

as well as one Saturday morning of cartoons (10 a.m. Aug. 15) and an afternoon devoted to silent pictures (4 p.m. Aug. 16). Keep reading for the titles. Get tickets ($10 advance, $12 day of show) at the Fox box office on Peachtree Street, online or at 855.285.8499. The exception: Only reserved seats ($15 advance, $20 day of show) are available for the Aug. 2 sing-along of The Sound of Music. Tours of the Fox (limited to 20 people) are available before most screenings, and take guests through the projection booth, screening room, dressing rooms and onstage. Tours aren’t recommended for anyone age 7 or younger; ages 2 and under are not permitted. The tour is not ADA accessible and includes lots of steps, so beware. Also, tours must be purchased with a movie ticket ($35 total; $40 The Sound of Music). Parking ($5) is available in select Lanier lots near the theater while spaces are available. Contact the Fox for details. As is tradition, each screening begins with music from the Mighty Mo organ, a vintage cartoon and a sing-along. Can’t you almost smell the popcorn and hot dogs and see sudsy beer slapping the sides of flimsy plastic cups. All screenings start at 7:30 p.m., unless otherwise noted.

JULY Jaws. July 16. Rated PG. This is a 40th anniversary screening of the 1975 thriller that made Americans everywhere afraid to go into the water. When a gigantic great white shark begins to menace a small island community, a police chief, a marine scientist and a grizzled fisherman set out to stop it. With Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. (124 mins.) Fun fact: The mechanical shark used in the movie was never tested in the water before filming began. When put in at Martha’s Vineyard for the first time, it sank to the ocean floor. A team of divers had to retrieve it. The Breakfast Club. July 18. Rated R. A 30th anniversary screening of this 1985 Brat Pack classic. Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy play high school students — a jock, a nerd, the popular girl, etc. — bonding and bickering as they serve detention together. (97 mins.) Fun fact: The scene in which they all sit in a circle on the floor and tell stories about why they’re serving detention was unscripted. Director John Hughes told them to ad-lib. Also, Ally Sheedy’s dandruff was portrayed by grated Parmesan cheese. Yum. ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 25

Ghostbusters. July 30. Rated PG. Three unemployed parapsychology professors (Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis) set up shop as a unique ghost removal service in this 1984 comedy-fantasy. Who you gonna call? With Sigourney Weaver. Note: Ramis died last February. (105 mins.) Fun fact: On the set, Aykroyd referred to the “Slimer” ghost as the ghost of “Saturday Night Live” colleague John Belushi, who’d died two years earlier. Aykroyd also ad-libbed most of his lines. What fun for the other actors!

AUGUST The Sound of Music. 1 p.m. Aug. 2. Rated G. Winner of five Academy Awards including best picture. A 50th anniversary sing-along for fans young and old, in lederhosen or shorts, and everyone from expert yodelers to I-can-barely-carrya-tune’ers. Which von Trapp kid is your favorite (or secret crush)? Will Maria ever become a nun? Why is the Baroness so mean? Why is the Captain so clueless? Let Julie Andrews teach you your DoRe-Mi’s and see the family von Trapp climb every mountain on the Fox’s giant screen. (174 mins.) Fun fact: The house used as the von Trapp mansion was owned by actress Hedy Lamarr. Also, the real bishop of Salzburg marries Maria 26 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

and the Captain. No one had called the actor who played the role to the shoot.

Braveheart. Aug. 15. Rated R. A 20th anniversary screening. When his secret bride is executed for assaulting an English soldier who tried to rape her, William Wallace (Mel Gibson) begins a revolt and leads Scottish warriors against the English tyrant who rules them. A highly fictitious retelling of the life of the real Scottish hero. (177 mins.) Fun fact: “Braveheart” was actually the nickname of Robert the Bruce (1306-1329), not William Wallace (1272-1305). It’s a tough business — Gibson could only get funding for the movie if he agreed to star. Frozen. 1 p.m. Aug. 29. Rated PG. La-dee-dah, a sing-along! When newly crowned Queen Elsa accidentally uses her power to turn things to ice and her home into infinite winter, her sister, Anna, teams with a mountain man, his playful reindeer and a snowman to change the weather. Elsa is voiced by Kristen Bell; her songs are sung by Tony Award winner Idina Menzel (aka Adele Nazeem) as you just might know. Fun fact: The characters of Hans, Kristof, Anna and Sven are all named after Hans Christian Andersen. Say them quickly in sequence and see what we mean.

Revolutionary Fever,

Summer Fun See how America became America in a 3-day Virginia tour Story and photos by Kristi Casey Sanders

W

ith all the barbecue, watermelon and flag waving that goes on in July, it’s hard to remember that America almost lost the Revolutionary War. When Colonists first rebelled against British governors in 1775, it wasn’t a popular movement. The establishment considered them zealots. Allegiances to one side or the other split families. On the British side stood well-trained and provisioned soldiers backed by paid mercenaries. The American militia comprised largely untrained, undisciplined volunteers who, especially near the end of the conflict, marched shoeless, inadequately clothed and fed. Despite being outnumbered, suffering disease, desertions and critical military defeats, 32 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

the Americans managed to do what unhappy colonists worldwide could not: They expelled the British Empire. It didn’t happen overnight. It took eight painful years. But when Gen. George Washington captured Gen. Charles Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown on Oct. 19, 1781, the conflict turned. Sea skirmishes continued, but Yorktown ended land-based fighting and helped convince British Parliament to sue for peace, which finally came with the 1783 Treaty of Paris. If your memory of this fascinating chapter in American history has dimmed, consider a trip to Historic Jamestown and Yorktown, Va., where the motto is “History Is Fun!” and nearby Colonial Williamsburg. You’ll find pioneer, Colonial and Revolutionary

War museums, artisans demonstrating 17th- and 18th-century crafts, historic battlegrounds, archaeological parks and other family-friendly attractions. It’s an excellent way to celebrate America’s birthday month while learning more about its earliest inhabitants, rebels and pioneers. DAY 1: JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT & YORKTOWN VICTORY CENTER, HISTORIC JAMESTOWNE Gain insight into the life and legacy of the first American settlers at the Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center (historyisfun.org). Inside the Victory Center, learn the real stories behind icons like Pocahontas, Chief Powhatan and John Smith as you visit chronologically arranged galleries that tell the story of America’s first permanent settlement. The Jamestown Settlement outside is an open-air living history museum that demonstrates how people lived in the 17th century. The reconstructed settlement, filled with historically accurate Native American and Colonial buildings and ships, features costumed tourism professionals, amateur historians and artisan craftspeople. Afterward, visit the real 1607 James Fort at Historic Jamestowne (historicjamestowne. org). Archaeologists have unearthed more than 2 million artifacts since discovering it 20 years ago. Choose a tour led by an archaeologist, park ranger or educator. Then dine at the Dale House Cafe (historicjamestowne.org/visit/planyour-visit/cafe/) overlooking the James River. DAY 2: YORKTOWN’S RIVERWALK LANDING AND BATTLEFIELD Revisit the 18th century at Yorktown’s Riverwalk Landing (yorkcounty.gov), where cannons still guard the James River and nearby

homes bear Revolutionary War scars. The milelong riverwalk features independent shops and waterfront restaurants, the Waterfront Museum, and Segway and boat tours. Active travelers might choose hiking, biking or jogging through nearby Yorktown Battlefield (nps.gov/york), which is lined with historic markers. Self-guided driving tours are another way to see the pivotal battle sites, 300-year-old trenches and other wartime mementos. The battlefield is part of the Colonial National Historical Park, which includes the Yorktown National Cemetery and historic homes. ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 33

DAY 3: COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG Most visitors opt to stay in Williamsburg, which offers traditional hotels and bed-andbreakfast inns as well as historic guest homes in its Colonial district. Now known as “The Revolutionary City,” the 1920s restoration of Colonial Williamsburg (est. 1633, colonialwilliamsburg.com) began as a personal project of John D. Rockefeller Jr. What began with the renovation of one historic building became an obsession to restore the entire district to its pre-Revolutionary-era appearance. To do so, Rockefeller purchased every parcel of land and every structure in the city’s historic district, save one home, which remained a private residence for many years. Modern structures were replaced with historical replicas. He was able to restore 88 original structures, including Bruton Parish Church, where George Washington and Thomas Jefferson worshiped, and install 500 historic-looking buildings. Attractions include Merchant Square, with its concentration of shops and restaurants, and more than 20 daily and self-guided 34 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

IF YOU GO Fly into Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (flyphf.com), which is 20 minutes from the historic attractions, or Norfolk International Airport (norfolkairport.com), which is an hour’s drive from Williamsburg. Multiday packages including accommodations and tickets to Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown’s attractions. Go to visitwilliamsburg. com. tours. At the courthouse, visitors become participants in the re-enactment of historic court cases. Costumed “residents” explain how industries were affected by the Revolutionary War, talk about life in that era and teach kids how to garden in the Colonial Nursery. There’s also an art museum featuring American and British decorative arts and a full calendar of evening activities.

FOX FUN FACTS EXPERIENCE MAGIC BEYOND THE STAGE WITH A TOUR OF ATLANTA’S HISTORIC JEWEL If you’ve ever wondered what hidden treasures and long-buried stories lay behind the glowing marquee of the fabulous Fox, you have a way to discover all there is to know. This month marks the second anniversary of Fox Theatre tours, one of many ways the theater and its caretakers are keeping their promise to preserve and share the legendary space with all of Atlanta. Here’s what you need to know.

WHEN: Tours are at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Monday and Thursday. Also at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday.

COST: $18; $15 for members of the military and senior citizens; $5 ages 10 and under.

LENGTH: One hour. WHAT YOU’LL SEE: More than 10 mustsee locations throughout the theater space, backstage and onstage.

A CAVEAT: Tours can be canceled or modified as special events and matinees dictate. Here is just some of what you’ll learn as your tour progresses:

• Some of the more notable performers through the years included Elvis, the Rolling Stones, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga.

• The Fox was commissioned in 1928 by the Shriners, a fraternal organization, that wanted its own mosque-like headquarters in Atlanta.

• Patrons still enter through the entrance used by the first guests on the first opening day.

• The building took 18 months to complete, opening on Christmas Day in 1929.

• The Mighty Mo Organ that’s so much a part of the Fox experience is the largest working Moller theater organ in the world.

• The Fox was almost forced to close in the 1970s, as so many other movie palaces did, but Atlantans fought to save the landmark. Citizens collected pennies, wrote “SAVE THE FOX” messages on their phone bills (AT&T was interested in the site) and benefit concerts were held. 44 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

Purchase tickets at www.FoxTheatre. org/tours, at the Fox ticket office or call 855.285.8499. If you want to book a private or group tour of 20 people or more, please call the theater at 404.881.2100. For even more tour information, visit www.FoxTheatre.org.
