he 2016 Fox Summer Film Festival has already crossed 30 days off its calendar. If you’re late to the popcornscented, A/C-cooled party, you’ve missed Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But don’t sweat. Eight titles are still to come, including Rocky and Jurassic Park, which recently joined the lineup, and one film that Fox audiences and Facebook fans helped select. Drumroll, please … from among Some Like It Hot, The Notebook and The Wizard of Oz, you chose … Some Like It Hot, the 1959 cross-dressing caper starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe, who, reportedly, proved difficult on the set. Movie tickets are on sale via the Fox website, at the ticket office on Peachtree Street or at 1.855.285.8499. With one exception, tickets are general admission ($10 advance, $12 day-of and you decide where to sit). Processing fees are extra. These are the same prices as the past several years. The exception is The Little Mermaid sing-along (Aug. 27). Those tickets are $15 in advance and $20 day-of-show, plus processing fees. Seating is reserved. For select screenings, a pre-show event will include a sing-along with a vintage cartoon and the famous Mighty Mo organ, played by surprise guests. You might recall that longtime Fox organist Larry-Douglas Embury died in February. Movie tours (capacity: 20) are available before many screenings. They take guests through the projection booth, screening room, celebrity dressing rooms and onstage. Tours aren’t recommended for age 7 or younger; age 2 and under are not permitted, period. Be forewarned: The tour is not ADA accessible and includes plenty of steps. Tours must be purchased with a movie ticket ($35 total). Some $5 parking vouchers are available in nearby Lanier lots. The Shining: Method actor Jack Nicholson’s improvised “Heere’s Johnny!” is the only line from the 1980 thriller directed by Stanley Kubrick to make it into the American Film Institute’s Top 100 Movie Quotes.
The Shining. 7:30 p.m. July 7. A wild-eyed Jack Nicholson turns from nice guy to menace in this 1980 thriller based on the Stephen King novel and scripted by Stanley Kubrick (A Clockwork Orange). If you’re a normal writer and ex-teacher, be careful what hotels you check into, especially in winter. Shelley Duvall plays Nicholson’s wife. P.S.: King was less than thrilled with the final product. • Trivia nugget: The color red is visible, either overtly or subtly, in nearly every shot. Watch for it. Also: To keep Nicholson in the ugly mood his role required, he was fed only cheese sandwiches, which he hates.

Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone, who also wrote the script) plays the now infamous small-time boxer who gets a supremely rare chance to fight the heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed. The flick won 1977 Oscars for best picture, director and film editing, and spawned four sequels plus 2015’s Creed with Michael B. Jordan. It also was the highest-grossing feature film of 1976.

Dinotechnology: Beneath all the latex foam skin and groundbreaking computer-generated “skins” and hydraulic pumps and motors lies a heart of, well, there is no heart. Microprocessors and serial cables, all controlled by a computer, brought this beast and others back from extinction.

Jurassic Park. 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18. Steven Spielberg directed this Michael Crichton script about dinosaur exhibits that run amok during a preview tour of a new theme park called Jurassic Park. The 1993 thriller won Academy Awards for its sound design, sound effects and visual effects. Among the cast: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Sir Richard Attenborough, B.D. Wong and Wayne Knight. Paleontology has never been the same.

Orson Welles introduced something to movie sets that had been missing from most indoor scenes before 1941: ceilings. Because most studio sets hung their lights above the sound stage, viewers never saw them. The ceilings in Citizen Kane aren’t really ceilings, though. They’re actually cloth canopies.

• Trivia nugget: The movie, obviously based on his William Randolph Hearst’s life, infuriated the newspaper publisher. “Rosebud,” it seems was his pet name for a certain body part of his longtime mistress. The American Film Institute ranked this film No. 1 on its list of greatest American movies of all time in 1998 and 2007. In its own time, however, Citizen Kane was a big-time box-office flop.

Citizen Kane. 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25. A 75th anniversary screening of the 1941 feature considered an American classic by almost everyone. When a publishing tycoon dies, news reporters scramble to discover the meaning of his final word: Rosebud. Orson Welles directed a cast that includes such famous names as Joseph Cotten, Agnes Moorhead (decades before her Pollyanna and “Bewitched” days), Ruth Warrick (“All My Children”) and Welles himself.

27 The Little Mermaid (sing-along). 2 p.m. Aug. 27. A mermaid princess makes a Faustian bargain with an unscrupulous sea witch in order to meet a human prince on land in this 1989 animated musical from Disney. It’s loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and features one of the earlier scores from the songwriting team of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman (“Part of This World,” “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl”). It won two Oscars — one for best score and one for the song “Under the Sea.”

Costume tests had revealed that the makeup used on Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon made their faces look green.

• Trivia nugget: When Curtis and Lemmon first put on their female makeup and costumes, they walked around the lot at Goldwyn Studios to see if they could pass as women. Next, they tried using mirrors in public ladies’ rooms to fix their makeup. When none of the women they encountered complained, they knew they’d nailed it. Kansas banned the film, by the way, explaining that cross-dressing was “too disturbing for Kansans.”

Some Like it Hot. 7:30 p.m. Aug. 27. Two Chicago musicians (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) witness the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, so they flee Illinois in an all-female band disguised as women. That is only the beginning of the complications in this Billy Wilder-directed comedy that counts George Raft and Joe E. Brown among its expansive cast.

L
et’s start at the end, the destination: Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest mountain — 4,784 feet above sea level, with breathtaking 360-degree vistas overlooking mountains, hills and valleys. There are several ways to get to this spot, from the ridiculously easy to the surprisingly difficult. But right now, soak in that view. On a really clear day, you can see the skyscrapers of Atlanta about 90 miles away. If it’s not that clear, there’s the consolation of deep multiple greens in valleys stretching away to all horizons, and moving shadows that the clouds cast on those valleys as they scuttle overhead. “You try to tell people about the beauty of the view, but it’s hard to tell without them coming up here to see it,” says Michael Cranford of Pineview, in Wilcox County, as he looks out over the Carolinas. He and his wife, Tonya, have been to the top several times but are here again, guiding the maiden voyages of three young nieces. “I can’t believe I’ve lived in Georgia eight years and this is my first time up here. It’s a spectacular view,” says Maulik Vaidya, a researcher for Cisco Systems in Atlanta.

As for the peculiar name, an on-site Georgia historical marker says it comes from a mistranslation of a Cherokee word. The Cherokees who settled the area called it “Itse’yi,” or “new green place.” Caucasians who came later confused that with a similar Cherokee word, “Untsaiy,” or brass. “Bald” just means a mountain peak without trees that provides an uninterrupted view of its surroundings. To further muddy the matter, the Cherokee today call the mountain Enotah. Part of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Chattahoochee National Forest, Brasstown Bald is topped with a Visitor Center run by the U.S. Forest Service. On a recent Saturday, my hiking companion Sam Peters, an Emory graduate student, and I joined dozens of people on the big observation deck encircling the center and looking out over Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. The Bald gets about 90,000 visitors a year, says Julia Schrader, who co-manages the facility. It’s most popular in October, by a wide margin, for the fall colors, but it also sees five to 10 weddings a year, usually

Brasstown Bald has no physical address. From Atlanta, take U.S. 19 North to Ga. 180 and follow the signs. There is a $5 per person fee to park and see the Bald, which includes a free shuttle to the top. The van enables people with disabilities, including those in wheelchairs, to enjoy the views.

small and informal ceremonies, and a fair share of wedding proposals. You can take the shuttle to the top or park in the lot and hike up. It’s a little more than a half-mile from the base to the top, on a paved but steep access road. If you’re reasonably fit, you should be able to manage it. You also can choose one of the wilderness trails that winds through the Chattahoochee National Forest and leads to the Bald, like Jack’s Knob Trail, which turns the day into a strenuous six-mile hike. We took that route. “It’s one of those trails where you keep thinking you’re about to get to the top and you don’t. It’s pretty intense,” says Sam, who’s hiked and camped all over the world, from Montana’s Glacier National Park to Iceland. “If you have experience with elevation hiking, you can do Jack’s Knob Trail,” he says. “But it’s not just a walk in the woods. You’ve got to have plenty of hydration and food.”

Apparently I didn’t hydrate sufficiently, and by the last mile, I was struggling. My hamstrings and calves cramped, causing my legs to fold beneath me several times. I got up slowly and hung on to a tree, breathing heavily. My water was gone so Sam shared his. I’d walk a few yards, sometimes listing to one side or the other, and tell myself that even in the worst-case scenario we were close enough to civilization that Sam could go get help. Finally, on rubbery legs with very few steps left in them, I made it to the car. We drove straight to a convenience store. I bought two bottles of Gatorade and chugged them in less than 10 minutes. Then I checked my Fitbit. In a few hours, I had walked 23,000 steps and climbed the equivalent of 140 flights of stairs. As we drove back to Atlanta through the gorgeous North Georgia mountains, I joked to Sam, “So, you want to do this again next weekend?” His response: “How about tomorrow?”

WELL DONE South City Kitchen Buckhead has added dinner to its lineup. The sophisticated yet casual Southern spot at 3350 Peachtree Road N.E. is open 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 11:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday; 11:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday. … Executive chef James Starnes, formerly with the Sun Dial Restaurant downtown, leads the kitchen. … The Buckhead location — which has exclusive desserts like sourdough beignets, bruléed banana pudding and chocolate caramel angel pie — is the youngest member of the family that includes South City Kitchen Midtown and South City Kitchen Vinings. Our May/June column reported failed health inspections at several spots. … We’re happy to report that upon re-inspection, Hal’s the Steakhouse on Old Ivy Road, a Buckhead hub for power meals and deals, received a grade of 98 (A) for its downstairs kitchen and a 100 (A) for it upstairs kitchen. … Thumbs Up Diner in East Point earned a 95 (A) when it was revisited, and Gladys Knight’s Signature Chicken & Waffles in Midtown regained its A rating with a score of 90.

PERFORMANCE NOTES All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the theatre. Not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers. Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance. This month marks the third anniversary of Fox Theatre tours, one of many ways the theater and its caretakers are keeping their promise to preserve and share the legendary space with all of Atlanta. Here’s what you need to know. • WHEN: Tours are at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Monday and Thursday. Also at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday. They’re also available before some movie screenings in the Fox Summer Film Festival. • COST: $18; $15 for the military/senior citizens; $5 ages 10 and under. • LENGTH: One hour. • WHAT YOU’LL SEE: More than 10 locations throughout the theater space, backstage and onstage. • BONUS: You’ll hear behind-the-scenes stories and learn fun facts. Some may include ghosts. • A CAVEAT: Tours can be canceled or modified as special events and matinees dictate (check ahead), include lots of stairs and are not ADA-accessible.

Here is just some of what you’ll learn as your tour progresses: • The Fox was commissioned in 1928 and built by the Shriners, a fraternal organization, that wanted its own mosque-like headquarters in Atlanta. • The building took 18 months to complete, opening on Christmas Day in 1929. • The Fox was almost forced to close in the 1970s, as so many other movie palaces did, but Atlantans fought to save the landmark. Citizens collected pennies, wrote “SAVE THE FOX” messages on their phone bills (AT&T was interested in the site) and benefit concerts were held. • Some of the more notable performers through the years included Elvis, the Rolling Stones, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, among many others. • Patrons still enter through the entrance used by the first guests on that chilly opening day in 1929. • The Mighty Mo Organ that’s so much a part of the Fox experience is the largest working Moller theater organ in the world. :: Get tickets at www.FoxTheatre.org/tours, the Fox ticket office or 855.285.8499.
