HIGHES T R ATING BA SED ON PERSONAL E XPERIENCES OF PATIENTS

Recently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services implemented a new ratings system to help consumers quickly and easily compare hospitals. That system is based on the results of a patient-experience survey referred to as HCAHPS, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems. Fewer than 10% of hospitals in the country received five stars, the highest rating possible, including Cancer Treatment Centers of America® in metro Atlanta.* In the surveys, 98% of our patients said they would definitely recommend our hospital to others—and 94% rated their overall experience a nine or ten on a 10-point scale. With results like that, it’s easy to see why so many of our patients travel here for treatment. To learn more about five-star care at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in metro Atlanta, visit cancercenter.com/atlanta.

cancercenter.com/atlanta 888.845.2471 * HCAHPS results can be found at www.cms.gov and were based on the published summary ratings provided by CMS for a data collection period of 10/1/2013 to 9/30/2014.

Ball

Andy Huntington Jones on a royal role that’s much more than charming

By Julie Bookman | Photos by Carol Rosegg

As Prince Topher, Andy Huntington Jones gets on his high horse as he searches for love.

The prince (Andy Huntington Jones) is indeed having a ball when he dances with the woman he believes is destined to be his wife.

D

ay after day, in city after city, falling in love for the first time comes easily to Andy Huntington Jones. Jones, who plays Prince Topher in the national tour of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, guesses that he’s waltzed, galloped and swooned some 400 times and counting. On Broadway, Jones understudied Santino Fontana, who earned a 2013 Tony Award nomination for the role. During that nearly two-year run, Fontana was often called away to record and promote a little movie called Frozen, in which he voiced Prince Hans. That meant Jones went on dozens of times. 12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

“I got to play Prince Topher on the night when the Tony nominations had just been announced,” he recalls, “so all the important people connected with the show came back.” (R+H’s Cinderella got nine nominations, winning for William Ivey Long’s costumes.) What makes it easy for Jones to sell his “I’m-so-totally-smitten” act to each new audience? The score, he says. “Richard Rodgers’ music is so incredibly romantic, expansive and lush, it makes falling in love easy. We all know how it feels to see someone and have butterflies in your stomach.

“It’s made my life easier,” Andy Jones says, “to have this beautiful score supporting this great love story.” The entire kingdom rejoices when it’s announced that there will be a royal ball.

Well, Richard Rodgers knew what that sounds like, and he wrote it into this show.” Oscar Hammerstein II’s lyrics also nudge Jones in a lovey-dovey direction, especially in “Ten Minutes Ago,” the song he sings shortly after meeting Cinderella: Ten minutes ago I saw you / I looked up when you came through the door / My head started reeling, you gave me the feeling / The room had no ceiling or floor … “It’s made my life easier,” he says, “to have this score supporting this great love story.”

AS SEEN ON TV

Depending on your age, your first exposure to Cinderella’s melodies likely came on television. The show is, in fact, the only Rodgers and Hammerstein musical specifically written for TV. On March 31, 1957, more than 107 million people tuned in to watch a 21-yearold Julie Andrews in the title role. Lesley Ann Warren played Cinderella in a 1965 TV version that aired for years; pop singer Brandy played the role in 1997, with Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother and Broadway’s Bernadette Peters as her evil stepmother. members the Brandy version. He grew up in a musical family in Swampscott, Mass., and earned a degree in musical theater from the University of Michigan. In college, he played Cinderella’s Prince in Into the Woods. This new production of the R+H show introduces a book by Douglas Carter Beane that updates the story, language and sensibilities. “It’s full of wit and humor,” Jones says, thankful that he’s no longer required to wear white tights. The prince “is no longer just charming, no longer just a stick-figure archetype; he’s a real and relatable guy who’s struggling to be a king. He’s desperately trying to figure out both how to do his job and what’s right for his country.” Audience members expecting a “saccharine-sweet fairy tale” encounter, instead, “a story with a sense of humor that’s sardonic at times,” Jones says. “Beane’s script resonates, makes them sit up and want to listen.” The actor-who-would-be-prince also likes that the script celebrates the idea that “through kindness, everything is possible. To me, there’s something so amazing about this huge production where the main grain of truth is: Be nice to people.” 14 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

He also thinks the relationship between Topher and Ella, as Cinderella is called here, can inspire young people today. “They make each other better,” Jones says, “which is what true love should do.”

ROMANCE, ROMANCE

If it sounds like he knows a thing or two about romane, he does. Jones recently proposed to Audrey Cardwell, who’s in the Cinderella ensemble. They met five years ago doing The Sound of Music; she played Cinderella to his Prince for several months. “Before I proposed for real,” he says, “I had already proposed to her about a hundred times onstage. When I actually did do it, I went in the opposite direction of a princely proposal. We were at her family’s house in Birmingham [Ala.], and I waited for us to be in pajamas, then I basically asked her if there might be any champagne in the house. I wasn’t nervous, but I was less smooth than I expected to be.” The two, who have since married, spent much of the past year apart, doing different shows. To travel together now as part of the same company, this prince says, “is like a fairy tale come true.”

After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902-79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in the early 1940s to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Oklahoma! (1943), the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’ sophisticated style of musical comedy (which he had perfected in a 25-year partnership with lyricist Lorenz Hart) with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta (conceived in collaboration with such composers as Sigmund Romberg, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Jerome Kern). Over the next 16 years, R&H wrote eight more Broadway musicals: Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music. They wrote one movie musical, State Fair, subsequently adapted to the stage, and one for television, “Cinderella.” First broadcast live with Julie Andrews in 1957, remade with Lesley Ann Warren in 1965 and again with 28 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance.   Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers.   Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance.   Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited.   Backstage employees are represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.)

ETIQUETTE 1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins. 3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting. 4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

It’s snowing amid the light and happy faces at Atlantic Station’s annual tree lighting, this year on Nov. 21.

Let it Glow, Let it Glow,

Let It Glow We sing now of holiday light shows — from downtown Atlanta to Lake Lanier

hich is more frightful: the weather outside or the prospect of being cooped up indoors during the holidays? We have an antidote for either — extravagant, complex and spirit-lifting light displays that run the gamut from bulbs amid the pines to choreographed, multimedia presentations. Whether free or ticketed, these shows often include on-site food-and-beverage vendors, costumed mascots, gift shops and diversions like ice skating rinks to keep you and your credit/ debit cards as busy as Santa’s elves on Christmas

makeshift audience trickles into the Decatur-based CORE dance studio to watch a loose rehearsal of the company’s summer intensive. Longtime fans confidently pull up chairs. A girl who’d been brunching around the corner spotted the event on Facebook and sauntered in for a bit of spontaneous afternoon culture. The piece, a world premiere titled Life Interrupted: Honor the 46 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

Innocent, won’t be seen in Atlanta until fall 2016, but it’s in the beginning stages and is the sort of work that CORE Perf ormance Company, CORE’s professional contemporary dance ensemble, welcomes audiences to look in on. They do this sort of thing regularly. The company, celebrating its 30th season in metro Atlanta (and its 35th in Houston, where it is dual-based), holds a semi-monthly Lunchtime in the Studio series

that invites anyone well-behaved to watch the dancers at work and enjoy a free lunch. It’s interesting for a contemporary dance company to be turning 30. As Sue Schroeder, CORE founder and artistic director, puts it: “How do you stay new and fresh and contemporary when you’re 35 years old?” One way is to take risks. Although after three decades CORE is a local institution, many Atlantans don’t realize it’s a professional company. Dance is a full-time job for its five-person staff and six dancers. They are constantly creating and debuting innovative work and performing internationally. Which brings us back to Life Interrupted, commissioned by the

University of Central Arkansas. It’s designed as a richly layered evening-length performance of contemporary dance, art and music, and has been created to honor and remember the U.S. citizens of Japanese descent who were interned on American soil during World War II. The piece, which will be retitled Gaman for its Atlanta premiere, has been a history lesson for its creators. “None of us lived there,” says Schroeder. “How do you make a historical event inform a contemporary work of art?” First they gathered a team from many artistic backgrounds: dancers, a dramaturg, a composer, an architect, a visual artist — what Schroeder likes to call a “dance laboratory.” Then they did research and began to put their ideas into motion, the dancers building moments and scenes in solos, duets and groups, with lights and music and art in play around them. The intensive mixed work and play, creating a palette of understanding that assists Schroeder in creating the final work. The dancers aren’t taught moves, rather, they inspire them, invent them and improve on them. The key to all things CORE is creative collaboration. “Each of these performers is a dance artist,” says Schroeder of her company members. “Each of these people is an art-maker. So what they bring to the work is very different than a repertory company where dancers are hired for skill and technique and not for creative contribution.” This anniversary season also brings projects with the High Museum of Art, including a series of site-specific dance works inspired by two of the High’s exhibits – Habsburg Splendor: Masterpieces From Vienna’s Imperial Collection and Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion.

CORE dancers will showcase new works both inside the museum and on the grounds, and guest choreographers will perform a commissioned work, Museum as Space, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the High’s building addition. But that’s not all. Besides it professional dance company, CORE offers classes, workshops, summer camps, teacher training and Dynamic X-Change, a program that provides safe, creative outlets for people in need of building self-awareness, communication skills, healthy body awareness and movement appreciation.

48 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

Schroeder believes history has served CORE well and that its mission as an artist-focused organization is stronger than ever. But she doesn’t want to stop and reflect on the past for long. CORE is all about what’s new and what’s next. “It’s is a group committed to taking risks,” says Schroeder. “That’s very exciting to me.”

e know. You’re already a savvy world traveler and think that all your globetrotting provided everything you need to know

about packing. That the three main categories are soft goods, hard goods and medications. That organization is so crucial you pack several days before each trip, always using a checklist. That you never, ever overpack because that is a cardi-

nal sin and only for amateurs, right? If that’s you, then by all means stop reading, take out your Mont Blanc and move on to The New York Times crossword puzzle because, apparently, you’ve got time to kill before you depart. The rest of us, however, are still trying to close our overstuffed bags while praying to the goddess of luggage weight limits that we won’t be humiliated at the check-in counter.

It’s often been said that there are two kinds of travelers: those who pack light and right, and those who wish they had. Choose your category and read on. First, here’s a new mantra for you: Pack with intent. The key is knowing what you’ll be doing on your trip so you can focus your travel wardrobe around that itinerary. This is usually easier for business trips because you can create several outfits from one suit by varying the shirts, tops and accessories. Even on pleasure trips, though, you should follow the “rule of three” — pack only three tops and three bottoms, making sure they’re all color compatible in neutrals. Once that’s covered, feel free to throw in one additional outfit (space permitting) for that ‘“just in case” event. You may have noticed that much of this advice is coming in threes. Let’s review: Three categories of travel needs: soft goods (clothing), hard goods (shoes/electronics/toiletries) and medications

Three words: Light and right Three more words: Pack with intent Three times two: three tops, three bottoms Can’t lift it? Don’t take it. We all know we’ll end up schlepping our bags from where the taxi dumps us to where we need to be. And despite hours spent shopping for luggage with nifty spinner wheels, all that walking gets old. You’ll not only be walking in and out of airports, hotels, convention centers and on cobblestone streets with that chic suitcase, you’ve probably got your computer bag/backpack plus a large purse, tote, shopping bag and who knows what else. Remember, light and right. Here are a few more tips gleaned from road warriors who’ve logged plenty of miles: • Roll clothes and/or fold two or more garments together using tissue paper or dry-cleaning bags between layers. Both methods help prevent wrinkles and creasing. ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 51

• On longer journeys, pack for only half the trip and do laundry at the midway point. • Ship all dirties home to make room for souvenirs. Most snail-mail postage is still cheaper than unexpected airport baggage fees. Some travelers actually toss out used underwear and/or donate clothes they’re not attached to at their location. • Keep all paperwork bundled together in one place, preferably a carry-on. • Be realistic about what reading material you take. Unless you have an electronic reading device, limit yourself to one book and consider donating it along the journey. 52 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

• Make sure labels on your medication(s) show the actual prescription or that you carry the information with you separately. These are the hardest things to replace while on the road and could be the thing you need most. Vitamins now come in convenient travel packs. • Don’t bring your entire beauty routine. Use hotel shampoo. Get travel sizes for your cosmetics. • Don’t take things that can only be worn once. Our final tip is to stay travel ready at all times. Keep a bag of absolute necessities (toiletries, pajamas, electronic plugs, etc.) together to grab and go as needed. Spontaneous travel, which comes with its own anxieties, is becoming more the norm. Act like a Scout and be prepared.

• Invest in see-through plastic packing cubes for grouped items like underwear and scarves. Carry extra zipper-lock bags for wet bathing suits or sweaty workout clothes.
