A BARRIE GOOD TIME Billy Harrigan Tighe comes soaring back home in Finding Neverland, playing the scribe who dreamed up Peter Pan. By julie Bookman 6 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
JEREMY DANIEL
I
n 1897, Scottish novelist and playwright James Matthew Barrie was living in London, near Kensington Gardens. There he befriended a neighbor family, the Llewelyn Davies, who had three young sons, George, John and, in a baby carriage, Peter. The brothers’ games inspired Barrie. They, in
turn, loved his lively tales and his tricks — wiggling his ears and eyebrows. In some of his stories, Barrie said baby brother Peter could fly and that all babies had once been birds. By the time the family added two more sons, Barrie’s Peter stories had taken wing. He wrote and premiered the 1904
“There’s a lot of J.M. Barrie in me because I refuse to grow up,” says Billy Harrigan Tighe (left), who plays Barrie in this national tour of Finding Neverland. Tom Hewitt is Captain Hook.

play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up in a large and celebrated production complete with pirates and Indians. In 1911, he turned his play into the novel Peter and Wendy. Even then, no one could have predicted how far Peter Pan would travel in the next 100 years. Countless adaptations and reimaginings have been created, from Paramount Pictures’ 1924 silent film and Disney’s animated 1953 version, to the 1954 Broadway musical with Mary Martin (which became a popular NBC telecast). The Broadway show was revived in 1979 with Sandy Duncan, then again in 1990 for onetime Olympic gymnast
Cathy Rigby. Then came two movies — Steven Spielberg’s Hook (1991) and Finding Neverland (2004) — and Broadway’s Peter and the Starcatcher (2009), adapted from the novel that gives Peter Pan a backstory. So what’s it like to inhabit the man who started all this mischief? “I feel a lot of responsibility,” says Billy Harrigan Tighe, the Atlanta native who happens to play Barrie in this national tour. (Director Diane Paulus and choreographer Mia Michaels have reportedly fine-tuned the Broadway musical’s production numbers for this tour.) Like the movie on which it’s based, Finding Neverland zeroes in on

Tighe’s advice for aspiring performers • If you’re going to pursue musical theater as your No. 1 goal, then you must better yourself via tap lessons, singing lessons, etc. There’s always something to work on. • Work hard and don’t take shortcuts. If you fail, you will grow from that failure. • Ask questions because we all rely on help and advice. There is always someone who can mentor you along the way. • You don’t need to always be in a show. “Some of my best work,” he says, “has, honestly, been in the shower.”

Barrie, his friendship with the Llewelyn Davies, and the period leading to the playwright’s success with Peter Pan. “Most of all, I just want to make sure I’m giving the audience the same sort of values that Barrie instilled in his own piece,” says Tighe, 31. “I’m basically wanting to use Neverland as my own personal Peter Pan. “I feel that I embody a lot of the same things J.M. Barrie did, especially from the perspective of being an artist who feels most at home inside his own psyche and imagination. Sometimes I’ve felt like a youth trapped in an adult body, and I’ve come to think that he probably felt that way.” Playing the scribe
helps him stay in touch with his youthful zest for life and imagination, says Tighe, whose parents Bill and Mary Ellen live in Marietta. He’s named for his dad but has always gone by “Billy.” “I am absolutely a Billy,” he says. “I will never be a Bill. There’s a lot of J.M. Barrie in me because I refuse to grow up.” Tighe is over the moon about finally performing beneath the stars at the Fox Theatre, which he frequented while growing up. This is the sixth national tour for Tighe, a 2003 graduate of Pebblebrook High, Cobb County’s performing arts magnet. None of the others brought him home. He “owes everything”

The touring life is OK, he says, except for the distance it puts between Tighe and wife Kristine Reese, also a performer (Broadway’ Mamma Mia!). Touring is doable because they don’t have children yet, he says. For now, romping onstage with talented kids who help “unlock my imagination every night” is enough. He’d “be happy doing any show, anywhere, any time,” he says. “If the big ones stopped calling, I would be doing a show in my garage.”

to Pebblebrook, he says. “It’s where I discovered my passion and learned what I needed to do to achieve my goals. The discipline and everything else I learned is still the foundation for all that I use now on a daily basis.” He played Zebulon in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in his first Pebblebrook show. His professional resume includes the title role in Broadway’s Pippin revival; Elder Price in The Book of Mormon on tour and in London; and Fiyero in Wicked, also on tour.

The Riverdance Irish Dance Troupe consists of world-class Irish dancers. They hail mostly from Ireland, but also from Britain, the United States, Canada and Australia. Among them, the dancers can boast of hundreds of championships won in Ireland and abroad. Most started dancing at age 3 or 4 at local dance schools and progressed to world-championship level before being chosen to perform in Riverdance. The dancers would have known and competed against each other at various competitions, including the World Championships. Riverdance has given them the opportunity to perform together for the first time in a noncompetitive way. The grace and eloquence of their soft-shoe dance and the power and precision of their hard-shoe routines clearly display the endless hours of practice and their dedication to the art of Irish dance. Old South, Meet New South Roswell, once a mill town,
is now Georgia’s 7th-largest city. Today it mixes plenty of modern into its living history. By Therra Gwyn Jaramillo
M
ention “Roswell” and some folks will tell you it’s the place in New Mexico where aliens supposedly landed in 1947. Say it to ATLiens, and they’ll likely tell you that Roswell, Ga., is a pretty fine place to land. Go 22 miles north of Atlanta and see that the Old South isn’t gone with the wind, not by a long shot, but that this once quaint mill town is yielding territory to a newer Southern sensibility. Whether you’re looking for Civil War history or haute cuisine, Roswell has a gracious plenty to offer and not just to the 94,000 people who call it home. Historic housing Now part of North Fulton County, Roswell was once in Cobb County. Call it an early revolt against long commute times, but when 34 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
residents tired of the four-hour horseback ride to the county seat of Marietta, they filed for cityhood. A charter for city incorporation was approved in 1854. A Southern trio of historic homes — Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall and the Smith Plantation (now museums and event venues) — perch grandly on the green landscape, geography so fertile that the Cherokee called it the “Enchanted Land.” Barrington Hall was named for Barrington King, whose family co-founded the colony that is now Roswell. Generations of King’s family preserved the property, a vast tract now whittled down to seven acres. The house is widely recognized as a prime example of Greek Revival Temple architecture. Take a self-guided tour and walk the only antebellum public garden in metro Atlanta.

See a play or a historic display at Bulloch Hall, the childhood home of Mittie Bulloch, Theodore Roosevelt’s mother. The museum room details life from the family’s arrival in 1838 and includes information about President Roosevelt’s 1905 visit. A chronicle of the Bullochs, a family bitterly divided by the Civil War, is included. Like most landed Southerners, they owned slaves and the slave quarters bear a plaque of the names of those who worked and served on the property. Smith Plantation was built in 1845 on 300 acres that includes a guest house, slave quarters, a cook house, carriage house and barn. Three generations of Archibald Smith’s family lived in the house and some of the original furnishings remain. There’s still some of the Civil War outdoors. Hike into Old Mill Park to see the ruins of the Roswell Manufacturing Co., textile mills and blacksmith shop. Fully operational by 1839, it was burned by Union soldiers in 1864 when Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman ordered that 400 mill workers, mainly women and children, be charged with treason. Rebuilt after the war, it burned again in 1926. The park is open daily and includes a walking trail with

duck-stuffed pasta or short-rib ravioli. Reservations are recommended. Adult beverages abound at Salt Factory Pub, which has an impressive beer and wine list, more than 40 bourbons and a few dozen choices of single malt scotch. That means some decision-making time before you move on to the menu of comfort food. Pair your drink with salmon tostadas or sip while you tuck into the chicken pot pie served in an actual pot. Fans often say this is the best pub at which they’ve ever eaten. (See sidebar for more suggestions.) Another nearby option is Altobeli’s Italian Restaurant and Piano Bar in Johns Creek. The ristorante features veal, beef, chicken and fish dishes with an unending list of pastas, an extensive wine list and seven nights of music every week. Roswell Ghost Tours explore the city’s tumultuous past with a touch of the modern all year long. There are beer crawls in case you need liquid courage before you confront Casper and, on some of these 2.5-hour tours, your pet is welcome. Roswell’s haunted history has been featured on the SyFy channel’s “Ghost Hunters.”

ast Side, West Side, all around the town. We’ve got up-to-date news on greater Atlanta’s dining scene, from Midtown and Buckhead, to Marietta and Sandy Springs.
WELL DONE Atlanta’s sprawl of undiscovered epicurean pockets expands into Chamblee with Hopstix, Asian-fusion cooking with a raw bar and an honest-to-goodness American brew pub all rolled into one. The menu offers a greatest hits of the Pacific Rim: sashimi and nigari, special sushi rolls, ramen, a variety of rice bowls, poke and robata grill. Home brews like the Trackside Pale (the first commercial beer brewed in Chamblee), the Gold Line Ale and Hopsession pair nicely with the diverse menu. ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 43
FROM TOP: Buckhead’s Atlas is also offering a lighter variation of its high-end menu. The indoor-outdoor Tavern at Atlas, attached to the main restaurant, offers small plates including this citrus-cured salmon flatbread. ABOVE: New to Collier Road is DAS BBQ, where the menu features pork ribs, sausage, smoked chicken wings and Texas-style smoked brisket.
On Collier Road in Midtown Atlanta, the all-new DAS BBQ is smoking meats with lots of hickory and pecan. Pitmaster Stephen Franklin offers tender pulled pork, pork ribs, sausage, smoked chicken wings and, of course, Texas-style smoked brisket — large slabs of lean beef married to a strip of savory, gelatinous fat to bring home the flavor. The sides range from grilled creamed corn and collards, to brisket-bark pinto beans and mac-and-cheese. Complete the experience with a white cocoa-banana pudding and a Creature Comfort Tropicalia beer from the tap. Two of the city’s high-end institutions are offering new variations on their experiences without having to go “all in.” Brazilian steakhouse mainstay Fogo de Chão, recently presented a less formal “Bar Fogo” menu that lets diners savor bites and sips as opposed to the traditional meat-a-thon format of an all-you-can-eat churrascaria. The lineup of small plates includes braised beef sliders, Brazilian empanadas stuffed with pincanha (the house special top sirloin) and crispy parmesan polenta fries. Wash it down with a strawberry hibiscus caipirinha (Brazil’s national cocktail) made with signature cachaça while it’s in season. Available at both the Buckhead and Dunwoody locations. Buckhead’s Atlas is taking a similar step with the Tavern at Atlas, a luxe indoor-outdoor setting attached to its namesake. Artfully plated small dishes — like the petit lobster pot pie, wagyu beef sliders and beet tartare — go with a diverse wineby-the-glass list, craft cocktails and Instagram-worthy desserts. Now you can to sit among the masterworks and sample the five-star fare without committing to a multi-course meal. SIMMERING Beltline star Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall will soon have two sibling restaurants occupying the former H. Harper Station. One will be called Golden Eagle, reports say. Its

creators promise a full-service “workingman’s tavern.” The second concept, Muchacho, will offer counter service and casual West Coast staples like breakfast and lunch tacos, toasts, grain bowls and poke bowls. Both openings are said to be imminent. This summer expect to see Bar Americano and Bar Crema from the folks behind Decatur’s Pinewood and Ponce City Market’s Mercury. Both are Italianthemed. Bar Americano will serve lunch and dinner; the adjoining Bar Crema will focus more on Italian desserts, gelato and coffees. The duo will open in the former Prohibition space at 56 E. Andrews Drive NW in Buckhead. After watching a video on Asian “rolled” ice cream, 19-yearold entrepreneur Kyle Bilig decided to try an Americanized version. He’s calling it Sweet Charlie’s. Rolled ice cream is a made-to-order phenomenon that rolls ice cream or frozen yogurt, along with flavors and toppings, on a surface that is minus 20 degrees. Sweet Charlie’s plans a late spring opening next to Superica on Roswell Road in Buckhead. Forbes calls it “the cool new trend in Asian sweets.” Kaiser’s Chop House arrives this spring in Sandy Springs’ burgeoning Roswell Road corridor. The collaboration comes with the impressive pedigrees of chefs Peter Kaiser and Kevin Rathbun, and will focus on quality cuts of meats, superior ingredients, and a boutique wine and cocktail program. Reports point to the upcoming opening of an 18,000-sq. ft. food hall that will be called Marietta Square Market and is expected to feature multiple restaurants a la Krog Street and Ponce City markets. FOX FUN FACTS Movie Palace History Atlanta’s Fox Theatre was one of five “crown jewel” Fox theaters around the country. The others were in Brooklyn, San Francisco, Detroit and St. Louis. All were atmospheric in their design and décor. The Fox in Brooklyn closed in 1966 and was demolished in 1979. The San Francisco Fox closed and was demolished in 1963. Like Atlanta’s Fox, the Detroit and St. Louis theaters are now performing arts centers that host a variety of acts as well as touring Broadway musicals. Here are some more fun facts about your Fox: • William Fox, who was born in Hungary and moved to America as a child, grew up to become a movie mogul with theaters around the country. He wanted to own one in Atlanta and liked the exotic design of the Shriners’ headquarters on Peachtree Street, so he agreed to lease the auditorium from them. This gave the Shriners enough money to pay for the building’s construction. • The theater opened Dec. 25, 1929. Tickets cost 15 cents to 75 cents. Two shows were advertised — one at 1:30 p.m. and the other at 8:30 p.m. — and included Walt Disney’s cartoon Steamboat Willie and the feature film Salute.
• The Fox was known as the “Disney theater” because it was the first in Atlanta to screen such family-friendly Disney movies as Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Peter Pan and Lady and the Tramp. • The movie tradition continues today with the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival, special events spotlighting the Mighty Moeller organ and on other occasions.
• It was equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including three projectors (most theaters had one or two) and speakers to amplify sound for the new “talkies.” The Fox converted to digital movie projectors in the 2000s. Those projectors sit beside the original equipment. • The Disney movie Song of the South — with Walt Disney in attendance — premiered on Nov. 12, 1946. 58 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

• The Fox was one of the first theaters designed to accommodate wide screens. Its screen was 80 feet wide — 4 feet wider than New York’s Roxy Theatre.
