tlanta audiences seem never to tire of certain musical spectacles. Think Phantom of the Opera or Wicked, which pull into town every few years.

It’s anybody’s guess if they’ll be just as smitten with the giddy Brit-themed A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, which won the 2014 Tony Award for best musical.

Think “Downton Abbey” meets Gilbert & Sullivan meets Oscar Wilde with side of Monty Python and, perhaps, an Edwin Drood vibe. Still, Gentleman’s Guide is a fully American invention. And a deliciously cheeky one, at that.

The songs are “streams of memorable melody” and “fizzily witty turns of phrase,” said The New York Times.

up-tempo “Why Are All the D’Ysquith’s Dying?” (The surname is pronounced DIES-quith.)

The musical, described by USA Today as “morbidly hilarious,” is based on the 1949 movie Kind Hearts and Coronets, a British black comedy. It, in turn, was inspired by the 1907 Roy Horniman novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal.

The plot turns on Monty Navarro, who’s in love with the social-climbing Sibella. Monty can’t marry her because he’s a pauper. But, when his mother dies, he learns he has aristocratic blood. What luck! Monty is ninth in line to inherit the family fortune and an earldom.

Doing the latest dance steps are James Taylor Odom (center, as Lady Hyacinth D’Ysquith) and the ladies of the ensemble.

What’s a clever fellow to do?

Knock off the eight D’Ysquiths who precede him, perhaps?

The conceit: One actor plays all eight corpses-to-be.

On film, Alec Guinness played the ill-fated eccentrics. On Broadway, Jefferson Mays won critical bouquets, a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award for playing the role(s) billed as “The D’Ysquith Family.”

Odom, 27, grew up in Lawrenceville and got a theater degree from Brenau University. He endured a months-long audition process before being cast as the “Family.”

He’s always been something of an Anglophile,” he says.

As a kid, he and his dad watched the Blake Edwards Pink Panther movies endlessly (A Shot in the Dark is his favorite). He recalls running around the house imitating Peter Sellers and “breaking things.”

Regionally, he’s done a bunch of Brits: Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, Mr. Banks in Mary Poppins, Sherlock Holmes in Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville, Charles Marlow in She Stoops to Conquer. At Berkmar High in Lilburn, he played Harold Hill 12

in The Music Man and the Elvis-inspired Conrad Birdie in Bye Bye Birdie.

News of the Gentleman’s Guide casting call came while he was doing nine shows a week as Henry Higgins at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre in Lancaster, Pa. “I couldn’t pass up the chance,” he says. “After a two-show day I got myself to New York for that open call. I was fifth in line and nobody knew me.”

His 32-page “audition packet” included songs and sides for all eight characters — from several gentlemen to the impossible Lady Hyacinth and the terribly bad actress Lady Salome. Each is ridiculously snooty. Odom’s favorite D’Yquith changes nightly, depending on the audience, his fellow actors and how any particular character decides to live in the moment of that performance.

“They all come alive and always surprise me,” he says.

“That’s where the fun lies. The minute I put on a costume, that informs my moves and helps me create that character.

“I will say this,” he offers, confidentially. “How Henry the beekeeper dies is a particularly favorite of mine.”

If you’re seeing the musical for the first time, Odom says just sit back and enjoy. Don’t worry about who’s who or the order of succession. “You’re going to meet them all, and I think each of them is deliciously nasty.”

Odom has dressers and a makeup artist in the wings to help him morph from one D’Ysquith to the next — one change is a mere 14 seconds.

“It really is a beast of a role,” he says. “It does a number on the body and the mind. But when you love it so much, it’s all worth it.”

He spearheaded the international tours of Fosse starring Ben Vereen and Ruthie Henshall and has produced the Lincoln Center Theater production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I and the National Theatre production of War Horse. With Cameron Mackintosh, he was executive producer of the U.S. and U.K. tours of the National Theatre’s My Fair Lady, Les Misérables and the new The Phantom of the Opera tour. STOMP, a unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy, was created in Brighton, U.K., in the summer of 1991. It was the result of a 10-year collaboration between its creators, Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas.

hey first worked together in 1981, as members of the street band Pookiesnackenburger and the theater group Cliff Hanger. Together, these groups presented a series of street comedy musicals at the Edinburgh Festival in the early ’80s.

After two albums, a U.K. TV series and extensive touring throughout Europe, Pookiesnackenburger also produced the highly acclaimed “Bins” commercial for Heineken lager.

The piece was written and choreographed

by Luke as part of the band’s stage show; it proved to be the starting point for STOMP’s climactic dustbin dance.

In 1986, Luke and Steve created an eightminute “percussive movie” for Bette Midler’s HBO special “Mondo Beyondo.” Between 1987 and 1990, Luke staged, as Artistic and Musical Director, four large-scale outdoor events, including “Beat the Clyde,” which involved floating a drum orchestra on a pontoon in the center of Glasgow; the largest of these events, “The Heineken Hove Lagoon Show,” involved a 120-piece drum orchestra featuring the Brighton Festival Chorus and a full orchestral string section.

In 1991, Steve and Luke first created STOMP, previewing it at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre and premiering it at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh, where it became The Guardian’s “Critics’ Choice” and won The Daily Express “Best of the Fringe Award.”

From 1991 to 1994, the original cast of STOMP played to capacity audiences worldwide: from Hong Kong to Barcelona, from Dublin to Sydney. The tour culminated in a sell-out season at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre in January 1994, where STOMP received an Olivier nomination for Best Entertainment and won Best Choreography in a West End Show.

An expanded STOMP, involving up to 30 cast members, was created for the Brighton Festival, and subsequently was presented in Melbourne, Australia. It was most recently seen in September 1995, open-air, at the Acropolis in Athens and at the Royal Festival Hall in London. This production broke all the box-office records that had been established

by Frank Sinatra in 1972.

STOMP began its run at the Orpheum Theatre in New York in February 1994 and went on to win both Obie and a Drama Desk awards for Most Unique Theatre Experience.

By the summer of 1994, the first American cast was in place at the Orpheum, freeing the original cast for sell-out tours of North America and Japan.

In the summer of 1995, two more American productions were created for the sole purpose of U.S. tours, which continue to this day.

U.S. casts have also debuted STOMP in Chile, Brazil and South Korea. Meanwhile, a fifth STOMP company, also touring from the U.K., was formed in 1997 and has toured the world ever since. This company presented STOMP for the first time in Scandinavia and South Africa, and has been regularly visited Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Another STOMP production opened in San Francisco in May 2000, running for 2.5 years.

The original STOMP cast has recorded music for the Tank Girl movie soundtrack and appeared on the Quincy Jones album, Q’s Jook Joint. A soundtrack recorded by Steve and Luke for the Showtime movie Riot was released in the spring 1997. STOMP also has been featured in a number of commercials, including Coca-Cola’s “Ice Pick” and numerous spots for U.S. Target stores and Toyota in Japan.

STOMP also created the Mr. Frears’ Ears series of short films for Nickelodeon, while Brooms, a 15-minute short based around the opening routine, was nominated for an Academy Award. Brooms also was selected for screening at Robert Redford’s Sundance Festival and for competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

STOMP made a special appearance at the Academy Awards in March 1996, with an original piece involving the live synchronization of classic film clips and onstage action, featuring 20 performers from all five productions.

In the summer of 1997, Steve and Luke created and directed STOMP OUT LOUD, a 45-minute television special for HBO, which combined stage material with new pieces created for TV. It was premiered in the USA in December 1997 and subsequently received four Emmy nominations, for direction,

sound mixing, multi-camera editing and art direction. 1998 saw the release of the “STOMP OUT LOUD” video and DVD around the world.

Another unique blend of live action and film footage was created for the Emmy Awards, in which STOMP effectively performed with Spike Jones!

STOMP performed after midnight on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at US President Clinton’s millennium celebrations. During 2000, a Sesame Street special, “Let’s Make Music”, a collaboration between STOMP and the Muppets, was released on TV and video in North America.

Luke and Steve began production of their IMAX movie Pulse: A STOMP Odyssey in Brazil during Carnival 2000 and completed it in the summer of 2002. Pulse takes the IMAX audience on a spectacular global journey, featuring performances from Kodo, Timbalada and Eva Yerbabuena. It was released to critical acclaim in New York in the autumn of 2002, and went on to win two major awards at the International Festival of La Géode in Paris.

In September 2002, STOMP finally entered London’s West End at the Vaudeville Theatre, and later that year performed as part of the Royal Variety Show for the second time.

In 2003, a new STOMP production opened I-4

at the Stuart Street Theatre in Boston and a unique Dolby Digital trailer featuring STOMP performances debuted in cinemas around the world.

In 2004, New York celebrated 10 years of continuous performances of STOMP at the Orpheum Theatre with the renaming of Second Avenue at Eighth Street as “Stomp Avenue.”

In addition to the European tour, in 2005 STOMP returned to Tokyo for three weeks and also toured Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

In 2006, STOMP’s New York production passed its 5,000th performance. In the same year, Luke and Steve directed a public service announcement for television called “Stomp Out Litter,” which featured the cast “sweeping up” at iconic locations in the five boroughs.

In addition, they were commissioned to create and produce the Lost and Found Orchestra, which takes the ideas behind STOMP to a symphonic level, in celebration of 40 years of the Brighton Festival. The LFO subsequently performed at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Sydney Festival early in 2007, was seen at the Royal Festival Hall in London at Christmas 2008 and the Theater Carré in February 2009.

In 2007, STOMP OUT LOUD opened in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino with an expanded castm and performed inside a new $28 million theater, specifically created for the production.

The West End entered its sixth consecutive year with a move from the Vaudeville to the Ambassadors Theatre, where it still resides.

In 2008, STOMP returned to its roots for a new DVD shoot at the Brighton Dome, bringing together cast members from all over the STOMP world.

For the first time, the entire show was captured in high-definition sound and video.

In 2008, Steve and Luke also expanded in to new areas with the release of their IMAX 3D nature documentary Wild Ocean. It features a symphonic mix of percussion and traditional orchestra in the soundtrack.

In September 2008, Wild Ocean won two awards at the Giant Screen Cinema Association — for Best Sound and Best Original Score — at the annual conference in New York.

The Lost and Found Orchestra reunited in 2010 for a new show, PANDEMONIUM, which appeared in several American cities throughout the fall.

In 2011, the New York production of

STOMP entered its 18th year, trouncing the Orpheum house record set by Little Shop of Horrors.

It also entered its 10th year in the West End at the Ambassadors Theatre, while, at the same time, Steve and Luke continued with their 3D film work.

In 2012, The Last Reef 3D, a film about the beauty and plight of reefs worldwide, was released. As with Wild Ocean, Luke and Steve composed the film’s orchestral soundtrack, recording it at the Old Market Theatre in their hometown of Brighton & Hove in the U.K. They have also celebrated the first anniversary of the Old Market Theatre. It was renovated in 2011, and is now a full-time venue that brings music, theater, dance, comedy and visual arts to the U.K.’s south coast.

Most recently, in August 2012, the largestever assembly of STOMP performers (40 of them from 12 countries) were brought together for a specifically choreographed appearance in the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

STOMP was created with the original U.K. cast: Luke Cresswell, Nick Dwyer, Sarah Eddy, Theseus Gerard, Fraser Morrison, David Olrod, Carl Smith and Fiona Wilkes.

JONATHON ELKINS (Performer) Born and raised in metro Detroit, Jonathon feels blessed to be doing what he loves and especially to be doing it as part of the STOMP family. Since 2010, he has drummed, marched and instructed within DCI and WGI groups throughout Michigan and was fortunate enough to be a member of the Detroit Pistons Entertainment Team and Detroit Lions Drumline. ALEXIS JULIANO (Performer) is an award-winning dancer, teacher and choreographer. His session work as a drummer and rhythm programmer includes Beats International, Bette Midler, Elvis Costello and Bryan Ferry. After working for several years as a street musician and performer, he created STOMP in 1991.

He has directed, with Steve McNicholas, several award-winning commercials and short films. He received an Oscar nomination for the film Brooms, an Emmy nomination for STOMP OUT LOUD and co-directed the award-winning IMAX movie Pulse: A STOMP Odyssey. He received a special achievement award from the Chicago Human Rhythm Project and, more recently, co-created the Lost and Found Orchestra and the Vegas production of STOMP OUT LOUD, and co-directed the 3D IMAX movie Wild Ocean. Luke occasionally performs with STOMP, and is conductor of the LFO.

STEVE McNICHOLAS (Director), from Yorkshire, has worked as an actor, singer, musician and writer with various theatrical and musical groups, starting with the Bradford Theatre Group in 1973. Through the ’80s he worked with Cliff Hanger, Covent Garden Community Theatre and Pookiesnackenburger. He was an original member of the a cappella group the Flying Pickets and appeared in Mr. Bean but no longer performs. He shares directorial credits with Luke Cresswell on STOMP-based films and commercials, and their new show, the Lost and Found Orchestra.

With Luke, he composed the soundtrack to the Showtime movie Riot and shares the Oscar and Emmy nominations for his work on Brooms and STOMP OUT LOUD. He also co-directed the award-winning IMAX movie Pulse: A STOMP Odyssey. Steve also co-created the LFO and co-directed the 3D IMAX movie Wild Ocean, released worldwide in 2008.

THE ATLANTA OPERA’S 18/19 SEASON Six-opera season features West Side Story, Dead Man Walking, Eugene Onegin, La Traviata and more Discoveries series performances.

he Atlanta Opera’s 2018/19 season opens in November with West Side Story and closes in May 2019 with La Traviata. It includes Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, a new production of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and, in the Discoveries series, jazz and tango operas for eight performances each (up from five).

The opera season, the sixth under general and artistic director Tomer Zvulun continues its mission of programming for opera lovers and new audiences alike.

Mainstage season subscriptions are on sale now. Pre-sale tickets for the oft-sold-out Discoveries series, entering its fifth season, are available now to subscribers. Single tickets go on sale June 9.

The four mainstage operas will be performed at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre; the Discoveries operas at the red-velvet cabaret La Maison Rouge, on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta’s Midtown/Poncey-Highland neighborhood.

The crowd-pleasing tango opera Maria de Buenos Aires, which sold out as part of this season’s Discoveries series, returns for eight performances in spring 2019.

MAINSTAGE WEST SIDE STORY | Nov. 3, 6, 9 + 11. This landmark 1957 musical is receiving a lot of attention in this, the centennial of composer Leonard Bernstein’s birth. The Bernstein score, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, includes “Something’s Coming,” “Maria,” “Tonight” and “I Feel Pretty,” among many others. The Broadway original won two Tony awards but not best musical (which went to Meredith Willson’s The Music Man.) It has been revived four times, including a 2011 version that incorporated Spanish. The 1961 feature film won 10 Academy Awards, including best picture. Francesca Zambello, general and artistic director of New York’s Glimmerglass Festival, created this telling and will direct. It began as a co-production with Houston Grand Opera and Chicago Lyric Opera. The choreography, by Julio Monge, uses the original work of Jerome Robbins. Texas-born soprano Vanessa Becerra sings Maria.

DEAD MAN WALKING | Feb. 2, 5, 8 + 10, 2019. Composer Jake Heggie’s 2000 piece (with a libretto by playwright Terrence McNally) is the most frequently performed American opera of the 21st century. Dead Man Walking, based on Sister Helen Prejean’s 1994 book, details her relationship with death-row inmate Joseph De Rocher. Mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, a Georgia native, sings Sister Helen. Baritone Michael Mayes sings De Rocher, a role he’s played to acclaim in London, Madrid and at Washington National Opera.

Dead Man Walking by composer Jake Heggie is the most frequently performed American opera this century.

Like the 1995 feature film, it follows the story of a nun and a death-row inmate.

Heggie, 56, describes himself as a theater composer concerned with serving the drama and exploring character.

Zvulun, whose 2016 New Orleans staging of Dead Man earned critical praise, will direct this co-production with The Israeli Opera.

Eugene Onegin, last seen in Atlanta in 2004, tells the story of a self-centered hero and the love and friendship he squanders. This Atlanta Opera staging is new.

Tchaikovsky’s story of love and loss concerns a selfish hero who lives to regret his blasé rejection of a young woman’s love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend. This new production was created by Atlanta Opera’s Zvulun and his frequent collaborators, designers Erhard Rom and Robert Wierzel. Zvulun directs. Baritone David Adam Moore, seen in Atlanta in Winter Journey (Discoveries series), sings the title role. Soprano Raquel Gonzalez sings Tatyana; tenor William Burden sings Lenski. Eugene Onegin was last seen in Atlanta in 2004.

LA TRAVIATA | April 27 + 30; May 3 + 5, 2019. Verdi’s grand opera, one of the most popular in the repertoire, tells the story of Violetta, who trades her coquettish ways for love but must then sacrifice that love for family.

Czech soprano Zuzana Markova makes her U.S. debut as Violetta. Guatemalan tenor Mario Chang sings Alfredo and Argentine baritone Fabian Veloz sings Germont. La Traviata was last seen in Atlanta in 2012.

The jazz opera Charlie Parker’s Yardbird examines the torture and triumphs of a life lived hard. The pioneering saxman died at age 35, after years of substance abuse.

DISCOVERIES SERIES CHARLIE PARKER’S YARDBIRD | Sept. 27-Oct. 7.

Regional premiere. This jazz opera, composed by saxophonist Daniel Schnyder, examines the tortured and exhilarating life of jazz virtuoso, bebop pioneer and saxman Charlie Parker as he lay dying. This production, sung in English, is directed by Israeli stage director Omer Ben Seadia.

WILDLIFE SAFARI

If your idea of a natural encounter is letting bison eat from your hand or seeing majestic giraffes roam freely, you’re in the right state of mind (and place).

Here are five spots, arranged alphabetically, to start you walking on the wild side. No animals were harmed in the making of this story.

CENTER FOR WILDLIFE EDUCATION AT GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY This Statesboro center, a 12-acre wetland preserve with a beaver lodge and walking paths, includes the Lamar Q. Ball Jr. Raptor Center. Its mission is to support the university’s environmental education programs and provide wildlife encounters for humans.

Watch eagles scrape the clouds. See the

habits and habitats of raptors, mammals, amphibians and reptiles. Learn about native species like alligators, and invasive ones like the coypu (“marsh dog” or nutria). They look like beavers but don’t build dams.

Choose a self-guided tour, see skunks and bunnies, follow the Children’s Discovery Trail or take in a raptor flight/ demonstration. Spend the night in the campground (tent rentals available), hike after dark and learn from staff members about nocturnal animals.

NOAH’S ARK ANIMAL SANCTUARY This 250-acre nonprofit in Locust Grove, 45 minutes south of Atlanta, heals and houses rescues from the Department of Natural Resources or transported from zoos and learning centers.

Noah’s Ark is home to more than 100 species and 1,500 critters, ranging from monkeys and macaws to white tigers and wolves. Hundreds more creatures find their way here for rehabilitation. If an animal cannot be safely returned to the wild, then it stays for life.

Allow at least an hour for a free, selfguided tour. Animal encounters are available for a fee. Get ultimate access as a “Keeper for a Day” — working and lunching with a zookeeper.

Caring for the animals costs the Ark $33,000 a month, so donations of cash, food and supplies are always welcome. Check online for a wish list and ways to help.

CHESTATEE WILDLIFE PRESERVE & ZOO Get cozy with emus (flightless birds), elk, zebras, lions, grizzlies and Foxie, a super-cute Fennec fox with really big ears. The smallish 20-acre Chestatee preserve in Dahlonega is home to some 100 exotic species and domestic animals, many of them rescues.

It brings humans and beasts together through education, observation and interaction.

Pack a picnic. Take a selfie with a hedgehog or hold a corn snake during a private small-animal encounter. Breakfasting with big cats is a mane event here, a chance to help zookeepers feed lions, tigers and leopards, and then toss a treat or three to bears, zebras and horses. Book your visit at least a week in advance.

Chestatee is a nonprofit, staffed mostly by volunteers. Your new friends will roar in appreciation if you can donate fresh veggies or canned food (peaches, pears, green beans, peanut butter). $10; $5 age 11 and under. WILD ANIMAL SAFARI Here in Pine Mountain, you drive on the wild side to see hundreds of roaming camels, zebras, American bison, giraffes, Watusi cattle, water buffalo and more.

You’ll be far from any traffic jams on this 3.5-mile route but don’t be surprised if someone lumbers to your car to say hello. You haven’t really lived until a camel pulls you over.

If you’d rather not use your own ride, you can rent a park zebra van or take the tour bus (not available year-round; bus schedules are posted at the park entrance).

Your admission includes entry to the Animal Walkabout where, in a more zoo-like setting, you’ll meet lemurs, alpacas, monkeys, exotic birds and Athena the white tiger.

Plan on at least two hours to explore both sections of the park. $26.95; $23.95 ages 3-12 and age 65-plus. AAA, military and emergency-responder discounts available.

OATLAND ISLAND WILDLIFE CENTER OF SAVANNAH The beauty and delicate eco-balance of coastal Georgia is highlighted in the compact, zoo-like Oatland Island preserve, surrounded by a hundred acres of maritime forest.

Conservation and education are a priority at this Savannah area facility. See cougars and bobcats as you walk, plus a regal bald eagle, a ghostly barn owl and hawks at the Birds of Prey sanctuary.

The elusive gray wolf is found in the Wolf Wilderness section, along with the Southern flying squirrel and other Deep South forest dwellers. Visit goats, turkeys and donkeys in the Barnyard and end your tour with the bison.

Educational events focus on such activities as open-fire cooking and beekeeping. Summer camps are available for kindergarteners through eighth-graders. $5; $3 kids, military, age 65 and up. WILD ADVENTURES THEME PARK This zoological park in Valdosta reopened March 10 for a season that runs weekends42

Its animal kingdom includes African cranes and parrots, alpacas, gators, Asian elephants, Asian water buffalo, pygmy goats, a black bear, an India black buck, snakes, desert lynx, giraffes, giant zebras, the greater one-horned rhino, hedgehogs and meerkats, tortoises and much more. ZOO OF CHEHAW PARK The Wild Animal Park in Albany was designed by naturalist Jim Fowler of TV’s “Wild Kingdom.” Chehaw, with more than 700 acres of conservation land and animal habitats, calls itself “nature’s playground.”

It’s home to more than 200 animals of more than 125 species — cheetahs, black rhinos, meerkats, black bears, monkeys, camels, emus and tortoises, among many others. The zoo, founded on conservation, preservation and education, is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

WELL DONE Brunch-crazed suburbanites will rejoice at the arrival of Maple Street Biscuit Co. in Woodstock and Duluth. The fast-casual recipe is simple: Order fresh-make cathead-size biscuits and fill them with pecan-smoked bacon, fried chicken, sausage gravy, goat cheese (any or all); serve with sides; brew strong, delicious Red Leaf coffee; and serve from early morning through midafternoon. Already a phenomenon in parts of Florida, look for a Maple Street Biscuit on a street near you soon. …

Star chef Linton Hopkins has finally opened C. Ellet’s Steak House at The Battery Atlanta at SunTrust Park. It’s named for his great-grandfather, Charles Ellet Jr., a Union solider during the Civil War and a bridge-building engineer. As Food for Thought reported last year, C. Ellet’s had been slotted for a May 2017 opening.

The space, inspired by Madrid’s Mercado de San Miguel, gets a handsome reboot with a menu of cured meats, cheeses and tapas from multiple regions of Spain. Hipster craft cocktails, and Spanish wines keep the casual fiesta going beyond the comida. …

Florida-based celebrity chef Michael Schwartz — a restaurateur, James Beard Award winner and author — expands his empire to Phipps Plaza with Genuine Pizza, a superapproachable Italian joint with gourmet Neapolitan-style pies and toppings like short ribs and gruyere, meatballs with peppers and onions, slow-roasted pork and fig, and rock shrimp with fresh manchego cheese. With the most expensive item on the

The dining room feels like it was plucked from New Orleans’ Garden District, with an elegant design that evokes a gentile but informal Southern atmosphere, a spot for an intimate bite or a rousing party. Steaks are the stars here, and Hopkins did his research, sourcing bovines from farms in eight states and offering a premier seafood program with cold and hot options.

Baseball season opens March 29, so you still have a few non-baseball days — and those out-of-town-game days — to get your steak on. Plus, the Battery is open 365 days a year. …

Flip Burger Boutique in Buckhead, originally one of three Flip gourmet burger locations in the city, has shut down its fryers. Only the Howell Mill Road restaurant remains. The buzz about the boutique eateries, the brainchild of “Top Chef” master Richard Blais, had been eroding since Blais left Atlanta to pursue projects elsewhere. …

Finally, the last cow has left Cowtippers, the iconic Midtown spot that served steaks near Piedmont Park for more than 20 years. FOX FUN FACTS The Fox comes in a box, too In 1974, the Fox Theatre reached a low point in its history, when the president announced it would close forever. The people of Atlanta, and then the nation, were in an uproar.

In 1976, the Fox became a National Historic Landmark. Since then, its supporters and employees have worked hard to live up their promise to maintain the theater and give back to the community that rescued it.

Community engagement programs — like Fox in a Box — support the organization’s mission to preserve and share the landmark.

Fox in a Box is an interactive school exhibit that ties key events in the Fox Theatre’s timeline with classroom lessons — from American history and the civil rights movement, to economics and the importance of community.

“Fox in a Box truly brings history to life,” says principal Katherine Kelbaugh of the Museum School in Avondale Estates.

A few more facts: • Since launching in December 2014, nearly 13,000 students have experienced Fox in a Box.

• More than 6,000 students in more than 30 metro Atlanta schools will experience it in the 2016/17 school year.

• Th e movable lesson challenges students to think about how communities come together to share an experience and to protect what’s important to them and their neighbors.

• Th e pop-up version consists of two 8-foot by 8-foot panels, one 10-foot by 10-foot fabric panel and aluminum tubing.

•A t the end of the experience, students complete several activities — creating a timeline, writing stories and making drawings — and have a class picture taken on the photo wall.
