ndrew Lloyd Webber, the Tony Award-winning composer of Cats, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera and Sunset Boulevard, wants audiences to have a “really good time” at his most recent show, an unabashed musical comedy. “School of Rock is fun,” he says. “Hopefully, I've fleshed it out with a few catchy songs and kept the spirit of the original movie.” But Lloyd Webber adds, there’s more to the show than that. “Hopefully you will also take out of it the central message of the story — which is a very warm and simple one about the empowering force of music.” Lloyd Webber, along with book writer Julian Fellowes, lyricist Glenn Slater (Sister Act, Little Mermaid) and director Laurence Connor, have taken Richard Linklater’s 2003 movie — which helped make Jack Black a box-office name — and given it new life onstage. It tells the story of an outrageous rock star wannabe named Dewey Finn, who worms his way into a substitute teaching job at a private school. Dewey puts together a rock band with his students to compete against adults in a Battle of the Bands contest — and, as a result, changes their lives. Onstage, the adaptation features a not-so-secret sauce: The kids play their own musical instruments. And do it well. “There is something very moving about that,” Fellowes says. “I mean you are sort of half moved to tears, simply by the fact that they're playing this music.” “You wouldn't really think that it’s 10- and 11-year-olds,”

Lloyd Webber says. “It's extraordinary for their age, just how great they are and how together they play.” The young actors’ musical skills are showcased several times in exuberant rock numbers like “You’re in the Band,” “Stick It to the Man” and one song retained from the movie, “Teacher’s Pet.” The idea for the musical came from Lloyd Webber’s wife, Madeleine, who purchased the rights to the movie. “I thought maybe it was something that we would flesh out with existing rock songs, because there were a few in the original movie,” Lloyd Webber says. But on closer inspection, he realized there wasn’t that much music in the film. So, he started looking for places where he could add songs. “I saw a couple of moments in the movie where I thought I could,” he says. “And so, my next port of call was to talk to a major dramatist, because when you're dealing with a successful film like this, which has a whole life of its own, I really wanted to talk to somebody who also has had a major career in film, television. And Julian Fellowes, who I know

has also written for the theater, was an obvious choice, because he's a real craftsman.” Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey and, like Lloyd Webber, a member of Britain’s House of Lords, knew and loved the movie. “I thought all of it — script, everything, was terrific,” Fellowes says. “Sometimes you have to talk yourself into things, or at least research them to see if you want to do it. But I knew I wanted to do it straight away.” This wasn’t the first time Fellowes had been called on to adapt a popular movie. He wrote the book for the Disney/ Cameron Mackintosh stage musical based on Mary Poppins. For this project, Fellowes and his collaborators spent two years working to bring more depth to the story without losing its comedy. In particular, they wanted to flesh out the roles of the children and their relationships with their parents. “I think it makes the children's parts a little more interesting to play,” Fellowes says. “They are all more defined as characters.” ENCORE ATLANTA | ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION | ENCOREATLANTA.COM

In fact, the first song Lloyd Webber wrote for the show was “If Only You Would Listen,” sung by the kids to their un-listening parents. Says director Laurence Connor, “I think we actually came up with that song title the first time we sat around the table, because we just knew that there was something in that. And the importance of that message and what Dewey does for them is that he is the only one that they feel listens.” Lloyd Webber says he discovered his love of music and theater at about the same age as the kids in the show. With that, he says, School of Rock represents a coming home of sorts. His first big hit was the rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, which he wrote at age 22. “When we recorded Superstar, Led Zeppelin were in the next door studio making an album,” he says. “And the lead singer of Deep Purple was our Jesus on the original album. So, coming back to doing this wasn't a huge leap for me.”

When Sunset Boulevard joined School of Rock, Cats and The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway in February 2017, Lloyd Webber became the only person to equal the record set in 1953 by Rodgers and Hammerstein with four Broadway shows running concurrently. He's also composed scores for Aspects of Love, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and Love Never Dies. He has co-produced his own shows, including Cats and The Phantom of the Opera and, as a solo producer, has presented the groundbreaking Bombay Dreams, which introduced the double Oscar-winning Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman to the Western stage. He owns seven West End theaters, including the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the Palladium and, most recently, the St James, which reopened this year as The Other Palace to provide a unique London home for new musicals in development. He is passionate about the importance of music in education, and the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has become one of Britain’s leading charities supporting the arts and music. In 2016, the foundation funded a major new national initiative that endowed the American Theatre Wing with a $1.3 million, three-year grant to support theater education opportunities for under-served young people and public schools across the United States. More than 90 restaurants, craft beer, cocktails and VIP experiences await you at Taste of Atlanta.

A MIX OF RELIEF and melancholy can accompany the start of fall in this part of the country. The lazier, hazier days of summer yield to busier calendars but also bring some of the most comfortable temperatures of the year. The march of the calendar also means a bumper crop of festivals statewide. Our rundown of events in October and November, arranged chronologically, includes eco and film fests, fried green tomatoes, Native American traditions and chili for the chilly. Some of the biggies may have come and gone, depending on when you read this, but you can always plan for next year. So, let’s get started.

TASTE OF ATLANTA. Oct 19-21. The gourmet gathering returns to Historic Fourth Ward Park, where more than 90 restaurants offer craveable bites alongside craft beer, wine and cocktails. The event includes several presentation stages, cooking classes, chef demonstrations and an all-inclusive Friday Night Kickoff Party ($102, age 21 and up only). DEEP ROOTS FESTIVAL. Oct. 20. This Milledgeville event was named a Top 20 event by the Southeast Tourism Society and Best Fest 2009 by the Southeast Festivals and Events Association. It’s worth a 90-minute drive to take in this cool cultural field day. Expect about 100 visual artists, all-day live music, a barbecue competition, kids’ events and a hotrod car show. $6 advance; $8 day-of-fest; age 10 and under free. Details at 478-414.4014.

CRANE CREEK HARVEST FESTIVAL. Oct. 20. Crane Creek Vineyards in Young Harris, about 2.5 hours north of Atlanta, has 20 acres of vines and miles of mountain views. BLACK POT COOKIN’ FESTIVAL. Oct. 26-27. Party like it’s 1799 at this fest on a 200-year-old farm. Camp for the week or weekend on this historic property between Gainesville and Athens, or come for the Saturday-afternoon cook-off where pork, pinto beans, cornbread and the like are cooked in cast-iron pots over an outdoor wood fire. Live music and dancing happen all weekend. $60 weekend pass includes camping fees; $25 Friday; $35 Saturday. Shield-Ethridge Heritage Farm, 2355 Ethridge Road, Jefferson. BRASELTON ANTIQUE & ARTISAN FESTIVAL. Oct. 26-28. More than 250 vendors line the streets of the city (population: 10,300) to sell antiques, repurposed creations, original artwork, rustics, salvage, primitives, furniture, pottery and jewelry to crowds of up to 25,000. Plus food trucks and live music. Similar events are held throughout the year. Free admission and parking (shuttle runs from YearOne, 1001 Cherry Drive). About an hour northeast of Atlanta. GREEN TOMATO FESTIVAL. Oct. 27-28. Juliette, an unincorporated community in Monroe County (population: 3,000, give or take) was used in the 1991 feature film Fried Green Tomatoes. The Green Tomato Fest revisits the culinary charms of the small-town South. With fried green tomatoes, of course, artists’ booths and a family-friendly vibe. BIG PIG JIG. Nov. 2-3. This pork party in Vienna, born in 1982 as a barbecue contests, now includes concerts, an arts and crafts fair, and a livestock show. It has become the region’s largest barbecue competition. The American Bus Association twice named it one of the Top 100 events in the country. Travel Agent magazine calls it one of America’s Top 500 festivals. Tom Clynes, author of Wild Planet!, calls the Jig one of the world’s 1,001 Most Extraordinary Events. $5$20. 350 Pig Jig Blvd., Vienna (two hours southeast of Atlanta). HEMLOCK FEST. Nov. 2-4. An eco-fest in Murrayville (90 miles northeast of Atlanta in Hall County) run by volunteers and focused on efforts to save trees and keep waterways clean. Visit for a day or camp for the weekend, learning about traditional living skills and the biodiversity of the Southern Appalachians. A nature village lets kids disengage from the digital world and connect with the natural one. Arts and crafts booths, nature walks and three days of concerts round out an event that can also be a retreat. $20-$55; age 15 and under free with paid adult. BURIED ALIVE FILM FESTIVAL. Nov. 14-18. This 13-year-old event in Little Five Points screens independent films that ooze slowly from darkly comic to generally gory, bizarre or just plain weird. Its warning: “Our films are not for the faint-hearted or timid.” Age 17 and up only unless accompanied by an adult. $8-$15 per screening; $100 unlimited fest pass. BURIED ALIVE FILM FEST

PEACH STATE CHILI COOK-OFF. Nov. 10. Some 60 teams vie for top honors in this Suwanee competition sanctioned by the International Chili Society. Winners in three categories (red chili, chili verde and salsa) compete. With live music, a kids’ play area, and arts and crafts vendors. Proceeds benefit the Gift of Adoption Fund, helping Georgia families with adoption costs. $8 plus fees for tasting wristbands. Town Center Park, 330 Town Center Ave., Suwanee.

City Pharmacy in Covington feels retro-hip and of the moment. The menu includes (above, from top) avocado toast on H&F multigrain toast with avocado, pickled peppers, cucumbers and a soft boiled egg; his month we find epicurean bliss at the pharmacy, watch watermelon salad with a tiny dancers twirl, welcome new flavors and say goodbye blood orange reduction, candied peanuts, mint to longtime favorites. It’s all ... food for thought. granita and feta; and a cheffed-up mac-ncheese. WELL DONE Go east, young man (or woman) on I-20 to an extraordinary little gem in downtown Covington. There, a Norman Rockwell setting awaits. A scenic 19th-century clocktower overlooks a town square with quaint shops and cafes — including the allnew, buzzworthy City Pharmacy.

Christian Perez (formerly of The Ritz-Carlton Buckhead and the Pig and the Pearl), feels of the moment. Chili-rubbed fried chicken, butter-poached scallops and shrimp risotto, Kobe beef burgers and pork porterhouses are a few of his creations, all sophisticated, top-quality fare. With Covington (about 35 miles southeast of Atlanta) now a certified movie/TV hotbed, both the city and City Pharmacy seem ready for their close-ups … Hattie B's has taken over the old Phillips 66 station on Moreland Avenue in Little Five Points. The chicken (tenders, wings sandwiches) comes in six spice levels, including "Shut the Cluck Up."

The spiciest opening of late is Nashville darling Hattie B’s. After teasing us for a few years, the Nashville Hot Chicken phenom is burning up Little Five Points (in the former 1950s-era Phillips 66 gas station on Moreland Avenue). Order one of six spice levels, starting with “Southern style” (no heat) and culminating with “Shut the Cluck Up,” which turns the birds crimson and renders them lip-burningly hot. Get your fix as a chicken sandwich, chicken tenders or wings. The sides are standard Southern barbecue: crinkly fries, collard greens, pimento mac-and-cheese and a wickedly good banana pudding or peach cobbler for dessert … After much anticipation, Tiny Lou’s has opened in the reimagined Hotel Clermont on Ponce de Leon Avenue. It’s named for a 1950s dancer who once grooved in the hotel’s Gypsy Room and, as legend has it, refused to dance for Adolf Hitler. Follow a pink neon sign down a staircase to the FrenchAmerican brasserie decorated midcentury modern with French accents. The menu follows traditional brasserie guidelines with steak tartare, escargot, steak-frites, trout almondine and a double-

After dinner, ride the elevator to the sixth-story rooftop bar crowned by the original Hotel Clermont tower, a 10,000-plus pound, neon-draped, 65-foot steel obelisk, and enjoy the westward view of Ponce City Market and the sunset … From Savannah comes Zunzi’s, a next-level South Africaninspired sandwich shop that made a “34 Meals Worth Actually Traveling For” list on the Buzzfeed website. The West Midtown (Howell Mill Road) takeout-and-catering spot does have sitdown seating. Its sandwiches come on classic French baguettes and are stuffed with white meat chicken, salmon, boerewors (a South African smoked sausage), curry chicken salad and more, then smothered with one of Zunzi’s proprietary savory dressings. Don’t forget to finish with a bag of Byrd’s Famous Cookies, little powdered-sugar grenades of flavor.

SIMMERING The Collective, a 20,000-sq.-ft. space opening in Midtown in 2019 as part of the Coda at Tech Square development, will further sate Atlanta’s appetite for food halls. Developers project 10 concepts, beginning with chef Hector Santiago’s El burro Pollo Burrito Kitchen, Poke Burri (sushi burritos, sushi doughnuts, sushi corndogs, poke bowls) and Wildleaf (fast-casual salads, grain bowls, soups, smoothies) ... Olivea Restaurant Group (of the Italian market/wine bar Bellina Alimentari in Ponce City Market) plans to debut two eateries in spring 2019, both inspired by Israeli food. You’ll find Aziza, a refined, sit-down experience, at Westside White Provisions. Rina a casual option, will become part of the Ford Factory Lofts near the Atlanta BeltLine in the Old Fourth Ward ... Zunzi's, a fresh South African-inspired sandwich shop, has arrived from Savannah. It comes with takeout, catering and sit-down options and the Conquistador (pictured) with chicken, romaine lettuce, tomato, sauce and dressing.

Metropolitan Parkway. The brand is known for specialty pizzas and local craft beer; the name comes from the owners’ physiques. TOAST Hand in Hand in Virginia-Highland has been pulling pints of British beer for 18 years, but no more. Financial issues, slow traffic and escalating intown real estate prices shut the taps. It joins Rose and Crown (Powers Ferry Road), Fox & Hounds (Buckhead) and Prince of Wales (Piedmont Avenue in Midtown), all thriving British pubs once upon a time, in ale heaven ... After nearly 10 years, late-night ramen legend Miso Izakaya has served its last loving spoonful. The Edgewood Avenue spot fell victim to rising lease costs and a tsunami of competition from Krog Street and Ponce City markets. Chef Liu is out of business on Buford Highway. Hot Melody Chinese has taken over the Doraville spot. Holy, Möller! The theater’s mighty organ has a few years to its credit, and quite a set of pipes The Fox Möller Opus 5566 Theatre Organ is the second-largest theater organ in the United States (smaller only than the instrument at New York’s Radio City Music Hall). It sort of makes sense: the Fox auditorium has 4,655 seats, while Radio City boasts 6,015. The term “theater organ” originally referred to a pipe organ designed to imitate an orchestra and accompany silent films, but as the instrument evolved, new designs and sounds were incorporated. Fox audiences have M.P. Möller to thank for the organ affectionately known as “Mighty Mo.” Möller immigrated to the United States in 1872 and, three years later, founded the M.P. Möller Pipe Organ Co. in Greencastle, Pa. The city of Hagerstown, Md., noticed his early success and convinced him to relocate. He did so in 1881. Here are a few more facts and stats and about Atlanta’s “Mighty Mo”:

• It’s one of fewer than 40 organs still in its original theater. The fact that it’s operational makes it even more rare. More than 7,000 theater organs were installed in U.S. movie houses in the first half of the 20th century. • Mo was custom-built for the Fox Theatre by M.P. Möller Inc. in 1928 and 1929. • It has seven miles of electrical wire that connect the organ to its instruments.

• The box seats on either side of the stage actually disguise the four organ chambers that house Mighty Mo’s pipes and instruments. • The organ chamber provide a home for instruments that make dozens of sound effects — songbirds, sirens, a Ford horn, Ludwig snare drums, bass drums, sleigh bells, Zildjian cymbals, a bell from a 1928 railroad locomotive and many others.
