Tumors have nowhere to hide Patients now have somewhere to turn The future of cancer treatment is here. And it’s only available at WellStar. WellStar is the only health system in metro Atlanta to offer TomoTherapy® and CyberKnife® for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.

TomoTherapy

CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System

Unlike conventional systems, which allow radiation to be delivered from only a few directions, TomoTherapy rotates in 360 degrees, meaning that treatments can be delivered continuously to the tumor from every angle. More beam directions give physicians more control in how they plan treatments – and more assurance that the dose will be confined to the tumor.

The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System involves no cutting, and for many, can offer a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of tumors. The system is composed of a radiation delivery device, which is mounted on a flexible robotic arm which enables CyberKnife to deliver radiation to tumors anywhere in the body. Its exceptional tracking ability eliminates the need for patients to have stabilizing head frames or limited breathing during treatment.

comedy, “stupid human tricks,” technology and original music – but no words. Nolan, who grew up outside Chicago, was 12, when the aunt who bought him his first drum set took him to see Blue Man Group in New York. “That was the beginning of my fascination with this crazy, wacky show,” he says. Being part of it never gets old, says this former music teacher, whereas “130 performances of West Side Story was enough.” Can one show really be so different from the next? Absolutely, Nolan says. “There’s an order to things, but you never know what might

esse Nolan feels just a wee bit sorry for the typical patron enjoying a Blue Man Group performance. “I can’t help it,” he says. “I feel bad for audience members who see just one show because I’m the one who gets so much spontaneous joy night after night after night. Even I can’t believe how lucky I am to get to go to work and have all this fun.” As resident music director for the North American tour and one of two drummers in the live band, Nolan has tallied more than 700 performances of the show that blends comedy, improvisation, innovation, slapstick

“I feel bad for audience members who see just one show. … Even I can’t believe how lucky I am to get to go to work and have all this fun.” happen in-between those things.” Time and again, Blue Man Group is described as “indescribable,” as a theatrical entertainment that defies categorization. Even its own website says Blue Man Group “cannot be explained; it can only be experienced.” Adds Nolan: “It really is still pretty radical.” If Blue Man Group is “about” anything, it’s about two different cultures coming together to try to learn more about each other, says Nolan. Those cultures are the bald Blue Men and the audience. The Blue Men explore the audience, as if getting familiar with a new species.

The always-silent, always-curious Blue Man character was created 25 years ago by Phil Stanton, Chris Wink and Matt Goldman. These first Blue Men staged “small disturbances” around New York City well before they took to an actual stage and started selling tickets. To date, Blue Man Group has been seen by millions worldwide and has numerous productions, including permanent shows in New York, Orlando and Las Vegas. Its basic mission, or universal “message,” has been the same since the beginning. The Blue Men, like the show itself, strive to remind us that humans have a basic need to ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION

Be prepared for food and other items to break the fourth wall.

BLUE BIZ FACTS • There are about 70 Blue Men on the payroll in various companies worldwide. Most are trained in theater or drumming. • More than 30 million people have seen a live Blue Man Group performance. • Each Blue Man is nameless and has his own track to follow throughout the show — named left, center and right. Cast members rotate in those parts. • Wacky props used on a weekly basis include 45 drumsticks, 360 pounds of Jell-O, 15 pounds of Cap’n Crunch cereal, 10 gallons of egg-based tempera paint; 100 cakes of blue makeup; 36 bald caps; 640 marshmallows; 910 bananas; 36 pieces of white chocolate candy.

connect with other humans. By the end of the interactive show “people are attached to the Blue Man character,” Nolan says. “They forge a relationship with this character. When you see a more traditional show, like Beauty and the Beast, the relationship is between the characters onstage. But here, the relationship is between the audience member and the Blue Man.” The Blue Man is the show’s poster boy, but Nolan considers the tribal music its guiding force. “The job of the music is to create a sonic landscape for an otherwise silent character to exist in and to move through. A lot of the performance energy of the show has to be translated through the music. How do we make a sound that supports the feeling that the Blue Man is conveying at any given moment?” 12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

He answers that soon enough: “We try to live in those moments, accept it all while it’s happening and go with it.” Nolan calls the connection between the three Blue Men and the band “the center of the show. It’s pretty cool. It can seem almost telepathic.” When you put three Blue Men and more than 2,000 audience members in one place, “something is going to happen,” Nolan says. “Make that something great is going to happen, but you don’t know what.” And the not knowing, he adds, well, that’s another something great.

BLUE MAN GROUP; ©PAUL KOLNIK

• New Blue Men are always welcome. Requirements include an athletic physique, a height between 5-feet-10 and 6-feet-1, solid drumming skills, excellent acting skills and a willingness to relocate. Details: blueman.com

A Streetcar

Saturday

Connecting 12 downtown stations and numerous tourist attractions, the streetcar costs $1 a ride and $3 for a one-day pass.

D

owntown Atlanta’s newest form of transit is also one of its oldest: The long-awaited, much-delayed Atlanta Streetcar began running its loop in December, harking to the late 1800s and early 1900s, when city transit operated on streetcar and trolley

32 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

bus systems. This new rendition is sleek and modern and a spectacle for a city with iffy public transit, but don’t go looking for any San Francisco-style cable car ambience. The Atlanta Streetcar’s 2.7-mile East-West route connects major tourist destinations (CNN Center, Georgia Aquarium, World of

Coca-Cola) with historic landmarks (the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, Historic Oakland Cemetery). The ride is woven directly into the bar and food culture of Edgewood Avenue (Sweet Auburn Curb Market, bars like MOTHER and Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room & Ping-Pong Emporium). It offered free rides its first three months, seeing more than 100,000 passengers, each with an opinion of their ride. I decided to try the streetcar out as a destination, planning to jump on MARTA at North Avenue, take the train two stops

south to Peachtree Center, and then board the main event, the purple-green bottle-nosed streetcar. These plans were derailed, literally, by MARTA maintenance. Let that be a warning to you, too. When I finally get to Peachtree Center, I realize it’s a particularly bustling weekend downtown, join the long queue for the streetcar and step aboard. It’s standing-room-only inside, and I grasp for a silver bar above. The streetcar, which has had plenty of critics, appears clean and contemporary, crowded with wideeyed eventgoers. Children press up to the windows and exclaim, “Look at that!” This won’t be a leisurely tour of downtown history, not without a seat. And, since the streetcar shares lanes with cars, the stop-and-go traffic makes enjoying the ride on your feet a comical test of balance. Tears of laughter appear as I jostle into my friend, more focused on staying upright than looking out the window. For families, it’s an instant urban experience in a friendlier-than-MARTA format, slightly more of an event than the underground getting-there of a subway train. “The Atlanta streetcar can be a fun outing for families. It’s a cheap and easy way to explore what downtown has to offer,” says Patrick Sullivan, taking all four members of his family on a ride from Centennial Olympic Park to Woodruff Park. His son didn’t mind the crowd. “I was surprised that it was packed with people,” says 6-year-old Gerard. “It can hold a bunch of people.” These crowds seem to prove that the streetcar will suit the needs of downtown tourists, and the small fee ($1 one-way, $3 for a day pass, free for kids — available via the MARTA Breeze Card system) shouldn’t deter anyone.

IF YOU GO WHAT IT COSTS: $1 one-way; $3 one-day pass; $11 weekly pass; $40 monthly pass; $10 five-day visitor pass. Up to two children (46 inches tall and under) free with paid adult. WHEN IT RUNS: 6 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 6 a.m.-1 a.m. Friday; 8:30 a.m.-1 a.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday. WHERE IT STOPS: The loop runs counterclockwise, includes these 12 stops — Peachtree Center; Carnegie Way at Spring Street; Centennial Olympic Park; Luckie at Cone Street; Park Place; Hurt Park; the Sweet Auburn Market; Edgewood Avenue at Hilliard; the King Historic District; Dobbs Plaza; Auburn Avenue at Piedmont Road; Woodruff Park. HOW OFTEN IT RUNS: every 10–15 minutes depending on ridership demand and traffic. WHAT’S NEARBY: The College Football Hall of Fame, CNN Center, Georgia Aquarium, Georgia Dome, Georgia State Capitol, Georgia World Congress Center, Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Historic Oakland Cemetery, Meehan’s Public House, MLK Jr. Birth Home, MLK Jr. National Historic Site, National Center for Civil and Human Rights, Pemberton Place, Philips Arena, the World of Coca-Cola. MISCELLANEOUS: Food and alcohol not permitted. Nonalcoholic drinks (coffee) OK in a container with a sealed lid. Easy access for wheelchairs and other mobility devices. Leashed guide dogs and companion animals if they’re leashed or otherwise contained. Bikes and Segways allowed in bottom section only and owners must stand by them. ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 33

For native Atlantans, the old-school appeal may promise a resurgence of out-and-about activity downtown. “Trolley lines once crisscrossed the entire city, so it’s exciting to think that the face of the city could change again and we’d see more people out for an evening, or even commuting on the streetcar,” says frequent user Scott Morris. So far he’s tested it as part of his commute and as a convenient ride to meet friends for dinner. He’s even developed a bar crawl along the streetcar’s 12 stops. Once the streetcar whizzes past the SkyView Atlanta Ferris wheel and the Tabernacle, I remember a time several years ago when I was a Georgia State undergrad and two German tourists asked how

34 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

to reach the World of Coca-Cola. I pointed the way through the complicated triangular districts of downtown and hoped they’d be OK. The streetcar eliminates that confusion for visitors and connects some of the city’s best-loved destinations for all of us. As the streetcar network expands, it may change the shape of Atlanta. “In the long run,” says rider Sullivan, “I believe the streetcar will prove to be an integral part of downtown’s transit system and will spur much needed infill development along the routes.” For now, Atlanta’s latest transit has that predictable pull of old and new. Nora Sullivan, age 5, puts it this way. “I liked it because you can look out at the city and see different places.”

Streetcars once ran up and down Peachtree Street, connecting Buckhead to south Atlanta, and east-west from West End to Oakhurst, near Decatur.

heart in decades: Is it bustling downtown with the Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola? Piedmont Park with its sunny-day strollers? Peachtree Street because it’s the central dividing line? With Ponce City Market (PCM), the eatall, shop-all indoor market opening this spring and summer, Atlanta may be acquiring a shiny, new heart. Rumors, updates and anticipation have been thump-thumping for years as it’s readied for the public. Eater, a website in 24 U.S. cities including Atlanta, recently named PCM one of the 23 most anticipated food halls in the country. The concept isn’t new. New York, Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland, Ore., are among a number of cities that have had food halls for

Atlanta hasn’t had a true

PONCE CITY MARKET WHERE: 675 Ponce de Leon Ave. N.E. in the Old Fourth Ward. WHAT: Atlanta’s landmark Sears building has been renovated to include retail space, offices, residences and the Central Food Hall. When fully completed, expect 400 parking spaces for bikes as well as an outdoor bar — made from a train boxcar — that will be built out with a deck. WHEN: Dancing Goats Coffee Bar is open now. Almost everything else is expected to open throughout spring and summer. FOOD VENDORS: Bellina (Italian market); Dub’s Fish Camp; Farm to Ladle (European cafe, farmstand); H&F Burger and Bread Co., Honeysuckle Gelato; Jia (Szechuan); Indian street food by Chai Pani; Juice Box (juices, cleanses); Minero (Mexican); Ton Ton (ramen, yakitori, sushi); Simply Seoul Kitchen; and Strippaggio (smallbatch olive oils, vinegars, etc.); RETAIL: Anthropologie (women’s clothing, gifts); Binders (custom framing, fine arts products); The Frye Co. (leather boots, bags, accessories); Goorin Bros. Hat Shop; J. Crew; Lou Lou Accessories; Madewell (women’s retailer); Michael Stars (custom-fit T-shirts and sweaters for men/women); Mountain High Outfitters; Oakleaf and Acorn (men’s boutique); Rejuvention (classic American lighting); West Elm (home goods); and Williams-Sonoma.

some time and are getting new ones, while first-of-their-kind food halls are underway in Charleston, Chicago, Denver, New Orleans and San Diego as well as Atlanta. That we know of. You’ll look no farther than the Central Food Hall at PCM, as it’s called, for Linton Hopkins’ famous burgers and fries, seafood sandwiches from Bacchanalia’s Anne Quatrano, a brandnew spot from chef Hector Santiago (formerly of Abbatoir), an outpost of Minera, Sean Brock’s Charleston-based Mexican restaurant, fresh bread, gelato, cold-pressed juices and small-batch olive oils. Ponce City Market, the former Sears, Roebuck and Co. distribution center, is centrally located along Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward, near the Atlanta BeltLine and at the crossroads of the Midtown, Poncey Highland and Virginia-Highland neighborhoods. More than $200 million has been spent to create an all-encompassing 1.1 million-sq. ft. space.

You’ll be able to eat, drink, work and play here, but lovers of history should also feel content in the adaptive reuse of the building. PCM is pursuing LEED Core & Shell Silver certification, with water-efficient fixtures and landscaping, LED lighting and efficient HVAC systems. Many of the building’s historic masonry, columns and design elements remain intact after the update. While finding great food has never been a problem in this city, have you ever had a tourist ask, “Where can we go shopping?” and stared at them befuddled? Previous options were the live-work-play development at Atlantic Station in West Midtown or a mall 10 miles away. PCM serves the middle ground with such retailers as the Frye Co., Madewell, Anthropologie, Michael Stars, Williams-Sonoma Home, Oakleaf and Acorn, Binders Art Supplies, West Elm and J. Crew, among others. So far, only those who pay rent for apartments and office space have gotten a foot in the door of this much-anticipated complex. The Flats at Ponce City Market, steps from the boutiques and eateries, combine modern, stainless steel touches and the building’s original brick and concrete. You’ll pay to live here though, with rent for the smallest studio starting at $1,292. Even more shops and eateries will be opening this spring, with more to come later this year and possibly into 2016 (including a “magic rooftop” with old-school carnival rides and games). When PCM finally does open wide, and the acronym becomes part of our everyday lingo, it will be a bit like Willy Wonka at his mysterious chocolate factory. What joys will be found behind those doors? COURTESY OF THE FOX THEATRE

The Fox Theatre Institute (FTI) has launched “Fox in a Box,” a traveling interactive school exhibit that focuses on how important events in the theater’s timeline intersect with key classroom learnings, from American history and the civil rights movement, to the economy and the importance of communities. “Fox in a Box challenges elementary students to think about how communities come together to share an experience and to protect what’s important to them,” says Carmie McDonald, FTI’s community engagement manager. Fox in a Box debuted in December at the Museum School in Avondale Estates. “The exhibit illustrates how art, culture and humanity connect to create a better community and a better reality for our world. As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Save the Fox campaign, our goal is to teach students about the role that the people of Atlanta played, showing them that anyone can make a difference in their community.” Through this interactive exhibit, students can imagine experiencing the venue in different roles — as a young child seeing a movie for the first time, for example, or as someone who helped build the building.
