A few decades ago — make that four — did you place the needle down on that Tapestry LP something like a thousand times?

If you can nod yes to any of these,

singer-songwriter Carole King once occupied a slice of your mind, or heart, or both.

Maybe she still does.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical tells the story of the former Carol Klein of Brooklyn, who as solo artist Carole King topped the pop charts in the early 1970s, stayed there for years and won millions of lifelong fans.

New York Times critic Ben Brantley compared, in part, the 2014 show to the 2005 Broadway hit Jersey Boys, which told the back story of the Four Seasons. Brantley pointed out that “you can’t go broke helping AARP members recall the soundtrack of their youths.”

Beautiful, like Jersey Boys, is packed with hits.

King, considered one of the most successful female songwriters of the past 50 years, has written or co-written more than 400 songs. Those songs have been recorded by more than 1,000 artists. Some 120 have been certifiable pop hits.

Perhaps the richest and most famous of King’s 25 solo albums is 1971’s Tapestry, which today

plays like a best-of compilation. Besides the title track, it includes “I Feel the Earth Move,” “So Far Away,” “Beautiful,” “It’s Too Late,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Where You Lead,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

“What I really love are the gasps of excitement and recognition throughout the audience as people realize she wrote songs they didn’t even know she wrote,” says Abby Mueller, the Chicagoraised actor who’s spending a year playing King in Beautiful’s first national tour.

“Her specific journey involves what she had to go through in life before she found her own voice, and also shows the way

the recording industry was working at the time.

It was all about writing songs for other people.

It was a big shift to write songs that you performed yourself, and she was at the very beginning of that.”

Beautiful begins with King’s early songwriting efforts in the late 1950s and ’60s, when she and lyricist-partner Gerry Goffin wrote hits for others.

Besides “Natural Woman” for Franklin, the list includes “Up on the Roof ” and “Some Kind of Wonderful” for the Drifters; “Take Good Care of My Baby” and “Go Away Little Girl,” both for Bobby Vee; “The Loco-Motion” for Little Eva; and “Pleasant Valley Sunday” for the Monkees). Tapestry’s “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” was written

for the Shirelles.

Goffin, the first of King’s four husbands, is a central character, as are Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, the long-married songwriting team and friendly rival.

King relocated to California’s Laurel Canyon in 1968, when her marriage ended, and pursued a solo career alongside Joni Mitchell and James Taylor.

Her solo success came fast and big. “Carole spoke from the heart, and she happened to be in tune with the mass psyche,” Weil said later.

“People were looking for a message, and she came to them with a message that was exactly what they were looking for.”

In the 2008 book Girls Like Us, which focuses on King, Mitchell and Carly Simon, author Sheila Weller writes that

by the early 1970s, King “would represent an inclusive new role of female sensuality: the young ‘natural’ woman, the ‘earth mother.’ ” King, now 74, was a pioneer, says Mueller.

“Her songs are poetic and simple, yet powerful.

She has always had this very rare ability to sum up in a deeply truthful and relatable way how women feel about things, how people in general feel about things.”

Mueller’s younger sister Jessie, by the way, originated the role of King in Beautiful on Broadway and won a 2014 best-actress Tony Award for doing so.

Abby Mueller is happy

to point out that she won the role in the national tour on her own, through the typical audition process. And, Just like Jessie did on Broadway, she really plays the piano in Beautiful (with backup from the orchestra).

It’s “pure joy and an honor” to perform King’s songs, Mueller says. “They have such a rare honesty and raw vulnerability.

They evoke certain times and moments in your life that matter.”

She also considers King “the real star of the show.”

Did she get any advice from the music legend?

“I did. She said, ‘Have fun being me. And just enjoy the music.’ ”

GERRY GOFFIN (Words and Music). Born in Brooklyn in 1939, Gerry Goffin met Carole King at Queens College and their musical collaboration began almost immediately. They married in 1959, and that same year wrote their first hit song,“Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” (the Shirelles). The duo penned more than 50 Top 40 hits including “The Locomotion,” “Natural Woman” and “Up on the Roof.” In 1987, Goffin and King were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame; in 1990, they joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Goffin has left an indelible mark on American music.

CAROLE KING (Words and Music). Pop music would be very different without the contributions of Carole King, who, at age 17, wrote her first No. 1 hit with Gerry Goffin, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” for the Shirelles.

The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period became legendary, but it was 1971’s Tapestry that took King to the pinnacle, speaking personally to her contemporaries and providing a spiritual musical backdrop to the decade. More than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by some 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles and six Grammys.

BARRY MANN (Words and Music) has written the melodies of some of the most influential pop songs in music history. In addition to “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” the most-played song of the past century, and the songs heard in Beautiful, he composed later standards like “Somewhere Out There” (winner of two Grammys), “Here You Come Again,” “Sometimes When We Touch,” “Just Once” and “Don’t Know Much.” Together, he and Cynthia Weil have amassed an incredible 112 pop, country and R&B awards from Broadcast Music Inc. for significant radio airplay. She said: “Perfect. I’m tired of doing what they want. Let’s go have some grown-up fun.”

And just like that, a vacation is born. One that involves adults traveling to Walt Disney World without kids in the car. Why? Because you can. It’s time you visited those special spots you’ve heard about or missed before.

If it’s been awhile since you’ve taken the seven-hour trip down I-75, read on for updates on what adults-with-no-children can do just for themselves at the happiest place on Earth.

Let’s say you plan to leave the real world for four days. First decision?

Where to stay. To go romantic, try the over-the-water Bungalows at the Polynesian Village. Some are available now, and when the project is complete, there will be a total of 20. You’ll feel as if you’ve landed in Bora Bora without the 14-hour flight. Check in, grab a mai tai and enjoy your own private plunge pool as your worries float away.

Stay with the South Pacific theme and reserve two seats at Disney’s Spirit of Aloha show, held nightly at the luau cove found beachside by the Seven Seas Lagoon. This is the real deal, a complete luau with tiki torches, hula and fire dancers, and a tropical buffet ($64-$76 plus tax and tip).

Disney Springs water taxi cruises go for $75 per person per half-hour. Champagne and strawberries are extra but probably worth it.

Afterward, link hands for a walk on the waterfront. Stop at Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto, just outside the Great Ceremonial House at the Poly Village, and order the Krakatoa Punch, then watch in shock and awe as the skies darken, volcanoes erupt and shrunken heads chant.

On Day 2, take the complimentary Walt Disney World bus to the Boardwalk area and rent a fringe-topped surrey bike to explore woodsy pathways.

Hungry? Choose from any number of waterfront eateries. You can opt for fine dining at the Flying Fish Café (try the yellowfin tuna tartare) or grab a quick corn dog from the dockside To-Go Cart, right next to the (who can resist?) Boardwalk Funnel Cake cart.

Looking for more action? Test yourself at Fantasia Fairways Miniature Golf Course, with its sand traps, bunkers, water hazards and sloping greens.

For dinner try Jiko — The Cooking Place, an award-winning, African-inspired restaurant in the Animal Kingdom Lodge hotel.

You can watch chefs prepare your African-inspired food in the open-show kitchen. Time it so you can catch the Starlight Safari.

You’ll don night-vision goggles for a 60-minute open-sided safari ride across the resort’s savanna to see how giraffes, zebras, hyenas and elephants behave when the sun goes down.

On Day 3, perhaps Epcot. Bypass the rides and enjoy globetrotting through the travelogues at the World Showcase, one of Epcot’s two main areas, and see a rotating array of live entertainment — perhaps a Morrocan snake charmer or a China dragon dance.

Take in one or more of the Circle-Vision 360 films — Reflections of China, O Canada! or the breathtaking Impressions de France.

The latter will have you thinking of the French countryside and set the mood for a piéce de resistance dinner at Monsieur Paul. Sit in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower (replica, shhh … ) and enjoy, with a champagne toast, your second-story view of the World Showcase Lagoon. Chef Nicholas Lemoyne, who trained in Lyon, will make you classique cassoulette d’escargole, ballotine de poulet or a decadent dessert. You’ll love it all.

• Ticonderoga Club at Krog Street Market joins the brunch bunch (11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday-Sunday) with such dishes as Yoga Pants (mixed fruit and yogurt); Pearl’s Flitters (spicy dough stuffed with chorizo, avocado and refried beans); and a “Yankee” bacon-egg-cheese sandwich on a kaiser roll.

Herban Fix on Peachtree Street in Midtown emphasizes all things green-leaning, including (from left) steamed buns with crispy soy duck, peanuts and cilantro; crispy purple tan cakes; and crispy tofu with sweet and sour sambal.

The Boston-based fast-food chain Wahlburgers, popularized on reality TV thanks to co-owners Mark and Donnie Wahlberg, plans to open six shops around Atlanta and Savannah as part of a national expansion campaign. Exact date and location details are still pending.

Rising Son, a no-nonsense source for country-style breakfast and “meat-and-three” dinners, is open in the Avondale Estates space vacated by the short-lived Bishop bistro. It features locally sourced meats, grains and veggies as well as farm-fresh juice, small-batch sodas and herbal supplements.

By summer, a new array of pizzerias will be rolling in dough if their expansion plans come together. The Ohio-based East of ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 47

Chicago franchise has announced plans to open in the Sweet Auburn District’s Pencil Factory complex. Ammazza, an Old Fourth Ward staple, is opening a scaled-down version of its flagship in what was Decatur’s Twisted Soul.

Midtown’s historic Biltmore Hotel is now home to a tourist-friendly pizza venture called Atwoods. And Buckhead’s Lenox Square is prepping for the debut of a build-your-own franchise called Rise Pies.

Metro foodies also should take note of local chefs’ love for all things green.

Herban Fix, a short stroll from the Fox Theatre on Peachtree Street, insists that strictly vegan dishes can be life-sustaining and lip-smackingly good. Driven by pan-Asian spices and preparation methods, the menu includes sweet pea ravioli with mushrooms; stuffed lemongrass tofu; and (faux chicken) soy kebabs.

Acclaimed chef and entrepreneur Linton Hopkins adds another branch to his empire with In the Garden, the fine-dining supplement to the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s massive modernization project. The

introductory menu was still being cultivated at press time, but plans called for much of the produce to be grown on-site. Linton’s Cafe at the Garden will be recycled into office space. There, diners have savored the beef bourguignon, shrimp with polenta, and macerated strawberry French toast.

It’s not green, but it sure looks good.

Several prominent restaurants have been burned by failing grades on health inspections. It’s not uncommon for dining spots to occasionally have to rescue their reputations from the fire, but the onus is also on consumers, who should be as interested in how their food is stored and prepared as they are service, menu selection and pricing.

Hal’s the Steakhouse on Old Ivy Road, a Buckhead hub for power meals and deals, had its 20-year reputation singed for numerous infractions: slimy ice machines; lack of hand soap and paper towels for cooks and servers; live insects in the kitchen; improper refrigeration of meats; ice storage in the hand-washing station; food stored in ice used for drinks; and leaving food items improperly exposed.

A routine inspection at Thumbs Up Diner in East Point, one of six outposts in the breakfast/brunch chain, was cited for employees’ failing to wash their hands; chemicals being stored next to water glasses and canned goods; raw fish stored at unsafe temperatures and near produce; and raw meat thawing in uncovered basins.

Gladys Knight’s Chicken & Waffles, the iconic Midtown soul food bistro, was cited for 15 violations, all issues that can contribute directly to food-borne illnesses.

Food inspections are conducted regularly; most results are readily available online and restaurants are required to post the latest inspection in a public spot on-site. :: This is Encore Atlanta’s second dining column. ANNUAL REVIVAL TOUR CELEBRATES FOX THEATRE INSTITUTE SUCCESS STORIES AND GIVES A NOD TO FUTURE PROJECTS This month, the Fox Theatre Institute (FTI) — the dynamic, philanthropic restoration program of the iconic Atlanta theater — holds its fourth annual Theatre Revival Tour, designed to broaden awareness of its projects across the state and the impact they have on local communities.

Since it was founded eight-plus years ago, the FTI has granted more than $360,000 to Georgia communities in need of funds to restore local theaters. These preservation grants create jobs and bring a new vitality and artistic energy to their respective cities and towns.

FTI has, to date, collaborated on 10 preservation projects including: • The DeSoto Theatre in Rome, which received historic paint analysis and restoration of original paint and decorative plaster.

• The Grand Theatre in Fitzgerald, which received funding to complete restoration of its original stained-glass light fixtures and authentic Barton theater organ.

• The Morton Theatre in Athens, which restored original flooring in its auditorium.

• The Ritz Theatre in Brunswick, which restored its wood windows and marquee.

• The Knox Theatre in Warrenton, which got a new roof.

• The Mars Theatre in Springfield, which restored its lobby and added ADAcompliant restrooms.

• The Plaza Theatre in Atlanta, which restored its historic marquee.
