amantha Marie Ware’s grandmother gave a diplomatic answer when she saw her granddaughter perform the female lead in The Book of Mormon. “She was a little taken aback,” recalls Ware, who plays Nabulungi. “She said she definitely liked my part, but I don’t know if she’ll see it again.” For such a runaway hit, The Book of Mormon is by no means the kind of mainstream musical guaranteed to please all audiences. Its creators built their reputations on irreverent, envelope-pushing satire: Robert Lopez offered 10 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

an adult version of “Sesame Street” with Avenue Q, while Emmy winners Trey Parker and Matt Stone make sport of everything under the sun in the long-running animated series “South Park.” For The Book of Mormon, the trio blends their wicked comedic sensibilities with an unabashed love for old-school musicals. Winner of nine Tony Awards, The Book of Mormon follows two naïve Mormons — ambitious Elder Price and fib-telling Elder Cunningham — on a seemingly fruitless mission to Uganda. Ware, as Nabulungi, plays a young

Ugandan villagers (including Samantha Marie Ware, as Nabulungi, second from left) learn all about Momon teachings.

villager who tries to keep her spirits up despite the disease, poverty and armed conflict around her. Most of the humor comes at the expense of the missionaries, with Nabulungi providing much of the show’s heartfelt sincerity. “In a way, she’s the anchor of the show,” says Ware. “Trey Parker always reminded me to capture her innocence. They did not want to make fun of her. Nothing she says is intended to be a joke.” Ware’s big solo, “Sal Tlay Ka Siti,” tweaks classic aspirational songs as sheltered Nabulungi envisions Salt Lake City as a paradise with

friendly warlords and “all the goat meat you can eat.” The Book of Mormon offers sly interpretations of decades of Broadway musical styles — an uproarious misreading of the life of Joseph Smith emulates “The Small House of Uncle Thomas” number from The King and I. Parker, Stone and Lopez specifically namecheck The Lion King multiple times. The stage version of The Lion King, coincidentally, gave Ware her first big break. The Nebraskan dropped out of a small liberal arts college to pursue theater in Chicago, where she auditioned for the Disney juggernaut and ended up performing the role of the lioness Nala for eight months in Las Vegas. Ware concedes the similarities in The Lion King and Mormon. “Both are set in Africa. There’s a part in Lion King when they run out of food and water, and Nala has to set off and find more, so that’s similar to my character,” she says. “But mostly they’re not very much alike.” Nevertheless, one of Mormon’s show-stoppers riffs is on Lion King’s “Hakuna Matata.” The newly arrived missionaries discover the villagers have a saying, “Hasa Diga Eebowai,” to help them through the troubled times. (“Does it mean ‘No worries for the end of your days?’ ” “ ‘Kind of!’ ”) The catchy melody builds to an uproariously profane and blasphemous punch line, which Ware finds both very funny and very real. “In the show, the plight of Uganda is very authentic. It’s uncomfortable humor. They’re cursing God and throwing up their middle fingers, as if to say, ‘Look at the poverty and disease we have to deal with every day.’ They’re letting out their anger for six minutes [in song].” ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION

11

Following her Vegas stint as Nala, Ware moved to New York, making her Broadway debut in The Book of Mormon. She replaced Tony winner Nikki M. James for six weeks before embarking on the show’s national tour. 12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

After 15 months Ware finds that different parts of the country respond differently to the show. “The dynamics of audiences will always change,” she says. “In the South, they always enjoy the show, but they’re more hesitant to laugh. Some don’t know if it’s OK to laugh out loud at some of the humor, so it’s harder to play off them. They’ll be polite and modest during the show, but give us ovations at the end. But we also always have those people who laugh at everything. We can hear them onstage.” Still, most audiences recognize the sincerity beneath The Book of Mormon’s silliness. “It’s not parodying Mormonism but every religious belief, if you’re paying attention,” she says. “It’s just a bald-faced way of telling a basic story. There are satiric qualities and numbers that satirize specific musical styles, but Matt and Trey are satirizing the things they love.”

Atlanta Jewish Film Festival opens Jan. 29 at cinemas all over town | By Curt Holman

sk Kenny Blank for his favorite memories as executive director of the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival and his answer comes quickly. “In 2010, our 10th anniversary year, we held a celebration of classic Jewish film scores in the Woodruff Arts Center. Not only did the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra play music from such films as Driving Miss Daisy, Chariots of Fire, The Ten Commandments and Schindler’s List, I got to fly to L.A. and meet composer John Williams, who taped a personal message. That was a high point for me.” The festival’s first gala concert provided a high-profile example of the scope of Jewish cinema, which isn’t limited to Holocaust dramas and Old Testament epics. This year’s 14 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

event, the 14th, screens 65 narrative and documentary films, including 12 shorts, from Jan. 29 through Feb. 20. The festival began in 2000 with the Atlanta chapter of the American Jewish Committee, an advocacy organization. A board member attended the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival and brought the concept back to Atlanta, recalls Blank, a former broadcast journalist who joined the group as a volunteer. “At the time, the Atlanta Jewish Committee was using film to advance its mission as a bridge between communities. In early years, the programming was very safe and predictable — mainly films about the Holocaust and the Jewish/Palestinian conflict.” Story continues on Page 50

The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

I WOULDN’T BE HERE WITHOUT GRADY. IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY AFTERNOON. My entire family was in the car, on the way home from Sunday school, when we had to swerve to avoid a mattress in the road and our car flipped over. My husband found me lying on the expressway, bleeding profusely. I was taken by ambulance to Grady with a shattered pelvis, a broken hip, broken ribs and a collapsed lung. I was very scared. Everyone there was so kind and kept telling me my kids were okay. If it wasn’t for Grady, I wouldn’t be here today to tell my story.

The closing-night screening (top) at this year's Atlanta Jewish Film Festival is Next Year Jerusalem, about nursing-home residents who journey to the Holy Land. Executive director Kenny Blank (right) began his festival tenure as a volunteer.

I want to upend people's expectations of what a Jewish film is. I want it to be a bona-fide film festival in its own right. Story continued from Page 14

When Blank took over as executive director, he sought to expand the festival’s scope. “I saw an opportunity to build on mission-driven work but also frame it as a celebration of film and Jewish culture. I want to upend people’s expectations of what Jewish film is. I want it to be a bona-fide film festival in its own right for the larger community. At the end of the day, these are great films that have some connection to Jewish life, but the storytelling is universal.” This year’s lineup includes the American comedy Blumenthal, featuring actor Brian Cox; the Israeli psychological thriller Big Bad 50 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

Wolf (cited by Quentin Tarantino as the best film of 2013); and a pair of PBS “American Masters” specials on filmmaker-comic-Broadway impresario Mel Brooks and the late composer Marvin Hamlisch, respectively. This year’s opening-night film, Run Boy Run, is an adaptation of Israeli author Uri Orlev’s Holocaust novel. It depicts a 9-yearold boy (Andy Tkacz) who flees the Warsaw ghetto and survives on his own through the end of World War II. The festival closes with the uplifting documentary Next Year Jerusalem, about eight residents of a Connecticut nursing home who make a transformative trip to the Holy Land.

The festival focuses on contemporary films but three years ago added a Classic Film Series to its mix. The AJFF this year presents screenings that mark the 50th anniversary of The Pawnbroker, Rod Steiger’s Holocaust drama; the 40th anniversary of the Richard Dreyfuss comedy The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz; and the 25th anniversary of the Atlanta-set, Oscar-winning Driving Miss Daisy on a 35mm print at the Lefont Sandy Springs. “Thank goodness [film exhibitor] George Lefont had the foresight to hold onto his 35mm projectors,” says Blank. “That not only still allows us to show classics on film but also some international films that aren’t connected to digital.” Atlanta hosts numerous film festivals throughout the year, but none conveys the sense of “event” as the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, which drew 31,500 attendees in 2013 (about 25 percent of whom identify as non-Jewish). Blank says that the festival constantly reaches out to Atlanta’s mainstream moviegoers. “The people who come are not film festival-goers or art film-goers, so there’s a constant education about what is a film festival, as opposed to Hollywood entertainment. 52 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

Sometimes we have to meet the audience where they are, to make [these movies] accessible to audiences that may not have heard of these actors and directors.” The 2014 fest will feature more repeat screenings of popular films, Blank says. The festival has been so successful that some tickets sell out within an hour and audiences are known to line up in theater lobbies for hours before screenings. Blank calls these good problems to have. Those crowds provide him with his favorite moments every year. “The most rewarding part is being on-site in a lobby, watching the audience file in with a sense of anticipation, like they’re going to go on a journey. Then the lights go up at the end, and I get to see their energy and hear their buzz, whether they have tears in their eyes or smiles on their faces.” For Blank, it seems, the audience can be as satisfying a show as the movies themselves. The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival runs Jan. 29-Feb. 20 at six venues including the Lefont Sandy Springs and Atlantic Station Stadium 16. Single tickets are $11. Details at 866.214.2072 and www. ajff.org.

he fabulous Fox Theatre, one of Atlanta’s premier venues for live entertainment, has received numerous awards, including being declared a “Top Stop of the Decade” by Venues Today Magazine and the “No. 1 Non-Residency Venue Worldwide” for the decade by Billboard Magazine. In an effort to build awareness and a unique brand identity for each its “sub-brands” — including the Fox Theatre Institute, Fox Tours, Fox Private Events and the Coca-Cola Summer Film Series — the Fox Theatre hired the branding agency Object 9 to assist with the development of a new look. The rebranding campaign is built around one logo and the new tagline “Atlanta’s Memory Maker.” It includes a unique message and imagery for each sub-brand. The goal for the new design is to create a brand identity for each business unit as well as a universal look

that is distinctively “Fox.” The new ads are designed to share a story and theme across the sub-brands creating consistency among all Fox Theatre entities. The campaign itself is centered on what is iconic and unique to the Fox Theatre, with the famous red-and-white marquee one of its most well-known and recognizable elements. The marquee is now featured prominently in every eblast and every piece of advertising. Each sub-brand has its own color palette, but they are consistent with the marquee image. The Fox Theatre has begun introducing the new ads to theater guests and consumers in Atlanta and surrounding areas, the Atlanta business community, the live entertainment industry, clients, sponsors and the giving community. Next time you drive down Peachtree Street in Midtown, be sure to look for the theater’s new window art!
