or Josh Young, pulling into Atlanta on the national tour of Evita doesn’t just mean “another suitcase in another hall,” to borrow the refrain from one of his softer numbers in the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice musical.
10 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
“Atlanta is kind of special to me because it’s where I started out. The Fox Theatre was my first professional theater, and it was my first Actors’ Equity job,” he says, answering the time-honored question about when he got his union card, a mark of professionalism.
The year was 2003 and Young, straight out of Syracuse University’s drama department, had been cast as the young crusader Marius in a tour of Les Misérables. “The Georgian Terrace was the nicest hotel ever,” he recalls. “It spoiled us for the rest of the tour. So I love Atlanta.” In the decade since, Young has built his reputation and musical theater resume. He can sing, dance and act. And he isn’t lacking in leading-man looks or charisma. A 2012 Tony Award nomination as Judas in the Jesus Christ Superstar revival only enhanced his standing as a rising star. Now he’s back in Atlanta
as Che, who whisks audiences through the brief and dramatic life of Eva Duarte Perón, aka “Evita,” a common girl with uncommon ambition who became the wife of Argentine President Juan Perón and an object of cult-like devotion. Atlanta is the 25th stop on the 28-city tour that began just after Labor Day 2013. Young, a Philadelphia native, says he’s having the time of his life as Che. Critics have called his work “remarkable” and “mesmerizing.” One called him a “future superstar in the making.” But the greatest honor of all, he says, was being compared to idol Mandy Patinkin, who created the role of Che in 1979 and won the best-actor Tony for doing so. “I like to think they are just positive reinforcement for me to keep on doing what I’m doing,” Young says of his reviews. “I’m so comfortable in this role. It suits my voice very well. It just feels right.” The fit wasn’t always so comfortable. There are two distinct interpretations of Che, and Young, now 34, has played both. In the original 1978 London production, Che was an anonymous Everyman figure. (In Argentina, “che” is slang for “man,” “bro,” “hey, buddy” or even just “hey.”) A year later, as the show readied for Broadway, director Hal Prince opted to reinterpret Che as the Marxist guerrilla “Che” Guevara, a Fidel Castro cohort during the Cuban Revolution. Young played the first version in 2010 at the Stratford Festival in Ontario; here, as in the recent Broadway revival, the omniscient narrator is back to being just one of the guys. “I thought for sure I would better appreciate my first experience at the Shakespeare festival in Canada,” Young says, “But I’ve been converted. For one thing, Che Guevera never crossed paths

with Evita. I’ve come to believe that it makes a lot more sense in telling the story to use someone who needed Eva. I see him as a working-class family man who could be one of the people rooting for her to figure out their problems. It’s much more effective.” Che is a demanding role, the character is always onstage. Its vocal demands are considerable. So
how does Young live out of a suitcase, maintain stamina and protect his voice for eight shows a week? He works out an hour a day, he says, then does nothing but rest. He keeps to himself. Doesn’t go out at night, except, occasionally, before his Monday off day. “I get to do what I love,” he answers. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
EXTRA CREDIT(S) Young has played traditional roles such as Lt. Joseph Cable in South Pacific and dreams of someday playing Carousel’s Billy Bigelow. But he especially likes doing new roles in new musicals. In 2009, he helped found Cutting-Edge Composers, a New York concert series that spotlights up-and-coming songwriters. See http://cuttingedgecomposers.com/. He’s also involved with the new musical Amazing Grace, about Englishman John Newton, who wrote the famous hymn. He plays the role later this year in Chicago. To hear selections from the score, visit the media section of his website. See http://josh-young.com/.

2014 Fox Summer
Film Fest ‘Mary Poppins,’ ‘King Kong’ populate 14-movie lineup; tours added
A
By Kathy Janich
Mary Poppins Sing-a-Long, a Mel Brooks double bill, the baseball-themed Field of Dreams (with the Atlanta Braves’ organist) and Gone With the Wind are among the highlights of the 2014 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival, which features 14 movies and will commence June 19 at the Fox Theatre. Delta Air Lines is a co-sponsor. Movie tours (limited to 20 people) will be available before most screenings, taking guests through the projection booth, screening room, celebrity dressing rooms and onstage. Tours are not recommended for age 7 or younger; 36 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
age 2 and under are not permitted. The tour is not ADA accessible and includes lots of steps. Tours must be purchased with a movie ticket ($35 total; Mary Poppins $40). Movie and tour tickets are on sale now at the Fox ticket office, the Fox website and at 1.855.285.8499. Most adult tickets are general admission and cost $10. Day-of tickets are $12. Processing fees are extra. Some exceptions: Gone With the Wind tickets are $15 and $20, plus processing fees, and seating is reserved. Mary Poppins Sing-a-Long tickets are $15 and $20, plus processing fees. These seats also are reserved. Some $5 parking
will be available in nearby Lanier lots. Check the Fox website for details. The movie lineup (in chronological order):
JU N E Field of Dreams. 7:30 p.m. June 19. Movie tours at 5 and 5:10 p.m. This 25th anniversary screening features pre-show music by Braves organist Matt Kaminski. The movie was chosen through a Fox Theatre Facebook fan vote. Fun fact: The movie was originally called “Shoeless” Joe, like the W.P. Kinsella novel on which it’s based, but test audiences thought that meant the main character was a bum or hobo. King Kong. 2 p.m. June 22. Movie tours at 11:30 and 11:40 a.m. This is the original 1933 Fay Wray version of the horror classic. Fun fact: King Kong’s roar is a lion’s roar and a tiger’s roar combined, run backward and at a slower speed. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. 7:30 p.m. June 26. Movie tours at 5 and 5:10 p.m. The 1989 adventure, the third of the four Indiana Jones feature films, casts Sean Connery as Indiana’s father and River Phoenix as the teenage Indiana. Fun fact: Watching Indiana wrestle with a Nazi, the soldier at the periscope tells his teammates, in German, “The Americans! They fight like girls!” The Wizard of Oz. 2 p.m. June 29. Movie tours at 11:30 and 11:40 a.m. A 75th anniversary screening. The Wicked Witch will be even meaner and greener on the Fox’s gi-normous screen. Fun fact: The horses in the Emerald City palace were colored with Jell-O crystals. The scenes had to be shot quickly, before the horses licked the crystals off.
JU LY
Dr. Strangelove: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. 7:30 p.m. July 24. Movie tours at 5 and 5:10 p.m. A 50th
anniversary screening of Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 war comedy about an insane general who triggers a path to nuclear holocaust and the politicians and generals trying to stop it. With Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, James Earl Jones and Slim Pickens, as Major “King” Kong. Fun fact: Jones thought Pickens was staying in character off camera, until he was told that Pickens wasn’t putting on the character but talking as he always did. Gone With the Wind. 2 p.m. July 27. A 75th anniversary screening. No tours. Fun fact: The horse that Thomas Mitchell (Gerald O’Hara) rode, later played Silver in the “Lone Ranger” TV series. Bonus fact: Hattie McDaniel was unable to attend the premiere because of Atlanta’s racial segregation; a deeply angry Clark Gable threatened to boycott the event. He relented at her urging. The Philadelphia Story. 7:30 p.m. July 31. Movie tours at 5 and 5:10 p.m. Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart define romantic comedy in this 1940 hit. The contrivance: A rich woman is about to marry for the second time when her suavely annoying ex-husband shows up and a tabloid reporter covering the social event catches her eye. Fun fact: In his autobiography, screenwriter Donald Odgen Stewart said that Philip Barry’s Broadway play (written for Hepburn) was so perfect that adapting it was the easiest Hollywood job he ever had. ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 37
AU GUST Saturday Morning Cartoons. 10 a.m. Aug. 2. Kids young and old will laugh at the antics of Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck and Co. Mamma Mia! 7:30 p.m. Aug. 2. Movie tours at 5 and 5:10 p.m. Meryl Streep won a Tony Award on Broadway, but can she really sing? You decide, while you get your ABBA on. Fun fact: Pierce Brosnan signed on without knowing anything about the project except that it was filming in Greece and Streep was starring. Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. 2 p.m. Aug. 3. No movie tours. A 40th anniversary screening of Young Frankenstein, a Mel Brooks classics. Blazing Saddles, by the way, will be his next stage musical, following the uber-successful The Producers and the not-sofine Young Frankenstein. Fun fact: Brooks and Gene Wilder, who co-wrote Frankenstein, had a doozy of a fight during production. Brooks raged, and then stormed out of Wilder’s apartment. Roughly 10 minutes later, Wilder’s phone rang. It was Brooks, who said: “Who was that madman you had in your house? I could hear the yelling all the way over here. You should never let crazy people into your house. Don’t you know that? They could be dangerous.”
38 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
Double Indemnity. 7:30 p.m. Aug. 14. Movie tours at 5 and 5:10 p.m. A 70th anniversary screening of the Barbara Stanwyck-Fred MacMurray thriller about an insurance rep who lets himself be talked into a murder/insurance fraud scheme. Movie tours at 11:30 and 11:40 a.m. Let’s go fly a kite, jump through chalk drawings and dance among the chimney tops with the nanny who’s practically perfect in every way. What better way to celebrate the landmark film’s 50th anniversary? Winner of five Academy Awards. Fun fact: Many of the nannies in the large queue of applicants at the start of the film were actually men in drag. The Women. 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21. Movie tours at 5 and 5:10 p.m. A 75th anniversary screening of the dramatic comedy about the lives and romantic entanglements of a group of upper-class New York women. Featuring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell and many, many others. Fun fact: In addition to its all-female cast, every animal that appears was also female.

The O®iginal
B®ea√away Town Lack of true downtown doesn’t slow Sandy Springs suburban swagger
P
erched on the Perimeter just north of Buckhead — and stretched along the spine of Roswell Road — is the independent enclave of Sandy Springs. There’s no downtown to speak of, but Sandy Springs doesn’t need one. It knows who it is — the first municipality to break from Fulton County. Beginning in the 1950s, residents fought the state to incorporate as a city. They succeeded in 2005 and, since then, have been vigorously doing their own thing. A bonus: 20 miles of Chattahoochee River shoreline runs through the city. HISTORICAL NUGGETS: In its early days, Sandy Springs was at the edge of the Georgia frontier. The Chattahoochee was the dividing 40 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
line between the United States and the Cherokee Nation. The Cherokees were driven out and the area was settled through a land lottery in the 1820s. It was variously called Oak Grove, Hammond and Burdal. A popular camp meeting was held on the sandy banks of a natural spring. When a post office was built there in the early 1900s, the name Sandy Springs became a natural choice. In the 1920s, Sandy Springs became a popular getaway for wealthy Atlantans, including Coca-Cola magnate Asa Candler, who built summer homes there. During the Great Depression, many struggling farmers in Sandy Springs became moonshiners or guards at a convict camp near what is now Roswell Road and Hammond Drive.

WHO LIVES HERE: You’ll find neighborhoods with older residents and young families. Apartment complexes house singles and families of all income ranges. As a whole, however, Sandy Springs is affluent. The average household income in the 2010 census was $114,540. One-third of the population is African-American and Hispanic. The population doubles during the day as people come to work.

WHAT TO SEE: Sandy Springs’ namesake underground spring is at Heritage Green, a park in the center of the city. The park hosts a farmers market every Saturday morning from mid-April through November with some 50 vendors offering local produce, pasture-raised meat, fresh eggs, dairy products and crafts. A free summer concert series is also held here as is the Sandy Springs Festival (Sept. 20-21), held every year since 1984. Metro Atlanta’s longest-running comedy club, the Punchline, has hosted comedy legends from Eddie Murphy to Jerry Seinfeld and Dave Chappelle. Anne Frank in the World, a museum devoted to the young Jewish girl killed by Nazis during World War II, tops the Sandy Springs Welcome Center. It features 600 photographs and a video that contains the only known footage of Anne. It also includes a video interview with John Galambos, a Holocaust survivor and husband of former Sandy Springs mayor Eva Galambos. The Civil War in Sandy Springs Exhibit, which opened April 30 at the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum, explores the experiences of those who lived here when the Union Army invaded. It includes unpublished diaries and letters documenting the experience. WHERE TO SHOP: You’ll find plenty of chain stores among the office towers and strip malls but there's more. Veronica’s Attic is a locally owned boutique with women’s clothes, accessories, jewelry and beauty products. Consignment shops like Jody’s 5th Avenue attract out-of-towners. In fact, a group of Alabama women recently rented a tour bus and traveled here for the resale prices. Specialty stores include Penzeys Spices, with more than 250 herbs and seasonings. Antiquers can scour Kudzu and Co. or bid at Gallery 63, where the reality TV series “Auction Kings” is filmed.
OPPOSITE PAGE: The Williams-Payne House & Museum, also known as the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum, is in the center of the city. ABOVE: Not far way, schoolkids learn about Anne Frank and WWII.
WHERE TO EAT: Artisan cheeses are made on-site at CalyRoad Creamery. Visitors can watch the cheese-making through a big glass window, sign up for classes or schedule private wine-and cheese-tastings for groups. Breadwinner Café & Bakery has sandwiches, salads and soups; its bread has been featured on “The Today Show” and the Food Network. At That Pie Place bakes 20 kinds of pies, and you can build your own. The lineup ranges from Salmon Teriyaki to Philly Cheesesteak and Chipotle Black Bean Burger. Dessert pies include the more traditional fruit pies plus a S’mores pie and something called Elvis (bananas, vanilla custard, crushed vanilla wafers, peanut butter and chocolate). Go upscale at Italian restaurant Double Zero Napoletana. Rumi’s Kitchen and Chef Rob’s Caribbean Cafe offer international fare in a similar price range. Nancy G’s does Southern fusion; try the pimiento cheese.

WHAT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW: If your life lacks ritual or just feels off, attend the Tuning In ceremonies at Muse for Life Community Inspiration Center. It offers new moon and full moon movement and music ceremonies, plus tea ceremonies in its Tea House. Music therapy and classes in music, dance, meditation and yoga are available. HIDDEN GEM: Playable Art Park, a nontraditional playground with a giant metal spider, opens this summer at Abernathy Greenway Linear Park on Abernathy Road N.W. Kids can play while adults check out the art. When finished, the park will have six large pieces of climbable art. Kids will be able to clamber over the big yellow arachnid, swing on a giant red swing, walk through a granite boulder and slide down a dragonfly. FOX FUN FACTS THE PROJECTION ROOM
For more than 35 years, Scott Hardin has been the man behind the scenes, literally. Scott got his start after the Fox Theatre was saved in the 1970s, when he joined the production team as a fill-in for more experienced projectionists. Now, as the Fox’s main projectionist, he operates the movie projector for the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival, which runs through Aug. 21. (See article on Pages 36-38) Special movie tours will be available before most movies, taking guests through the projection booth, screening room, celebrity dressing rooms and onto the iconic Fox stage, while they learn about the history of movie palaces and namesake William Fox’s innovations. For more tour information, visit the Fox Theatre website.

HERE’S WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY OF EACH MOVIE: ★ S cott controls the timing of events by giving cues via headset to the stagehands. ★ H e signals when to open and close the main curtain, when to change the house light levels, when the organ and gold piano should rise in place, when to play certain audio tracks and when to adjust the surrounding black masking curtains to fit the changing sizes of the images they project.
