hen the indie film Once made it to the United States in 2007, you’d have been hard-pressed to imagine it as the stuff of which Broadway musicals are made. The movie, which tells the story of an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant drawn together by their love of music, was shot on a meager budget of about $160,000. It was written and directed by a relative newcomer, John Carney (then best known as the former bassist for Irish band the Frames). It starred Frames’ frontman Glen Hansard and Czech singer-songwriter Markéta Irglová. Neither had any professional acting experience. And the story was extremely intimate, partially improvised and lacked the large-scale production numbers or happy ending found in most musicals. Still, the movie was a stunning international success. It won the Audience Award at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, the Academy Award for best original song (“Falling Slowly”) and, ultimately, grossed more $20 million at the box office. So how did such a simple little movie become such a huge international success? In a word: chemistry. Once tells the story of a 30-something busker who falls for a young Czech immigrant selling flowers on the streets of Dublin. Hansard and Irglová actually met for the first time when she was 13. Her father organized a Czech music festival in which the Frames played. Afterward he was invited to the family’s home, where he saw a piano and asked who played it. “So I played him a song,” Irglová recalled in an interview with Radio Prague, “and he said, ‘Do you write your own material?’ I said, no. I was really surprised by the question, because the thought had never occurred to me before. He said, ‘You should! It’s fun, and I’m sure you’d be good at it if you play an instrument and sing. Next time I see you, you can play it for me.’” With Hansard’s encouragement and mentorship, the teenager began writing her own songs. By 2006 they’d developed a partnership, forming a band that was eventually called the Swell Season. 12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
The project began with the recording of “Falling Slowly,” written for the soundtrack of the Czech film Beauty in Trouble. During those sessions they recorded many of the songs that would make the Swell Season’s 2006 debut album and the movie Once — “When Your Mind’s Made Up,” “Lies” and “Leave,” among them. Hansard ultimately convinced bandmate Carney to cast Irglová as the unnamed Girl in Once, and by the third day of shooting the director was referring to the pair as his Bogart and Bacall, predicting they’d wind up together romantically. In retrospect, the lovelorn

feelings depicted in the movie were all too real, as age differences (she was 17 then, he was 34) kept them from acting on their impulses. But when the movie studio sent them out on a bus tour to promote the film, they became a couple. Ultimately the romantic relationship didn’t last. They broke up in 2009, and Irglová went on to marry someone else. But the pair still performs together on occasion, and Irglová has said there’s discussion of recording a third Swell Season album together at some point. 14 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
In the end, perhaps the success of Once — as a film, soundtrack and Broadway musical — has as much to do with how the audience relates to the story as it does with how Hansard and Irglová related to each other. Once suggests that, while love is powerful enough to turn our lives (and hearts) inside out and upside down, it’s not always tidy, or convenient, or ever-lasting. But it also insists that love, even at its most bittersweet, is a thing of beauty to be treasured.

ony Bennett, impeccable as always in a navy suit with a natty red pocket square, paused in the middle of his four encores and held out his hand, signaling his quartet to give him a moment. “I tour all over the world,” he told the crowd at the Fox Theatre that November night in 2011. “All the new theaters, they look like file cabinets. You have one of the world’s greatest theaters. You are so fortunate to have this theater.”

The crowd roared with agreement. The stars twinkled overhead in the deep blue ceiling, just as they do for everything that plays at the Fox, from movies to rock concerts to opera to Broadway shows to presidential debates. Opened in 1929, nearly demolished and dramatically rescued in the the 1970s, the Fox Theatre has been on a roll as it approaches its official 85th birthday, piling up accolades from the entertainment and venue industries that

signal what a unique treasure towers over the corner of Peachtree and Ponce. Not just unique to Atlanta, but nationally. HONORS AND AWARDS The League of Historic American Theatres gave its Outstanding Historic Theatre Award to the Fox in 2011. “In our world, the world of historic theaters, the Fox is not just seen as a large historic theater but as a leader in preservation efforts,” says Ken Stein, League director. “The Fox is one of the finest examples of a well-preserved and well-managed theater in the nation. It really is an extraordinary facility.”The Fox was also named the No. 1 non-residency venue for the decade (5,000 seats or less) by Billboard magazine in 2009, and Top Stop of the Decade by the industry journal Venues Today; both awards were for the sheer volume of annual tickets sales atf the Fox, leaving aside its aesthetics and ongoing commitment to preservation. But even so, David Brooks, Venues Today managing editor, waxes eloquent about more than just boffo box office in talking about the Fox. “The Fox Theatre is in a rare and enviable position to be one of the few must-play venues in North America,” Brooks says. “For many artists, an event at the Fox Theatre is a milestone in their career, and the theater’s reputation for quality production and artistic integrity continues to impress top-level music executives.” All this is even more surprising in a city frequently known for tearing things down, from the storied Loew’s Grand Theater that saw the world premiere of Gone With the Wind to the upcoming demolition of the 20-year-old Georgia Dome to make way for a new stadium.
Details like these (above) are what make the Fox Theatre a special place to visit. As comedian Jeff Foxworthy has said, “Wow, what if they had torn this place down?”
“Eighty-five years later, we’re still relevant,” says Allan C. Vella, president and CEO of the Fox. Actually, more than relevant. “This theater has such a personal connection with the population of Atlanta,” Vella says. “They’ll tell you that their grandparents met in a balcony at a movie and had their first kiss here. They’ll tell you about when we were threatened and they participated in a car wash or a penny-saving campaign to save the Fox.” Feeding both national and local esteem for the Fox is its well-chronicled, legendary story of birth, decline and rebirth. ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 43
GOING, GOING ... Numerous societal changes caused the neglected and rundown theater to close in 1974, and demolition crews were warming up when the dramatic Save the Fox campaign captured the city’s imagination, and acts from Liberace to Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as thousands of fans, pitched In to rescue the building and preserve it as a nonprofit. “Wow, what if they had torn this place down?” comedian Jeff Foxworthy says on a 44 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
2004 Georgia Public Broadcasting documentary The Fabulous Fox. “What a shame, what an absolute shame, because not only the sense of history, but just everything that’s happened from ’76 up till now, how many great things this city would have missed because this theater wasn’t here.” CEO Vella is proud of the recent national awards, but he also knows the Fox makes connections with people who are not aware of such honors. “I love watching when that little girl comes into the Fox for the first time to see her first Broadway show,” he says, “and she’s wearing patent leather shoes and a red velvet dress. And she stops at the door and looks around, because she’s never really seen anything quite like this.” Phil Kloer has written extensively about theater and popular culture in Atlanta for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and ArtsATL.com. His first Fox show was a Rossington-Collins Band rock concert in 1980; his most recent was “The Book of Mormon” earlier this month.

The Atlanta Journal referred to the Fox’s “almost disturbing grandeur” when it opened in 1929, a reference to its elaborate architecture and interior design, which blends Moorish and Egyptian motifs. Originally planned and built by the Atlanta Shriners, it was completed (and named) by movie mogul William Fox (who also founded the company now called 20th Century Fox). Although Fox went bankrupt and sold the theater in 1932, it continued as a movie palace and home to annual visits from the Metropolitan Opera for decades.

his year, the Atlanta Film Festival presents its third screening – and first world premiere – from local filmmaker Bret Wood. His frequency at the 39-year-old event doesn’t mean he’s a shoo-in, though. “I have had a film rejected there,” he says. “Even if you’re kind of a regular, you go through the same submission process as everyone else.” Wood is one of several local filmmakers being showcased at the March 28-April 6 event.

He made his AFF debut as a director in 2007 with Psychopathia Sexualis, followed by The Little Death in 2011 and this year’s The Unwanted. In The Unwanted, Christen Orr plays a young woman who arrives in a rural town seeking her mother, only to become involved with a fragile waitress (Hannah Fierman) with an overprotective father (William Katt). “It’s a modernized version of the Gothic vampire story Carmilla, which was the title we filmed it under,” says Wood, 49. “We gave it a modern setting, brought out the subtext in the story in terms of religion and lesbianism and prejudice. There’s bloodletting, but no biting of necks.” Film festival audiences tend to appreciate alternatives to the Hollywood product, he says. “You have a receptive audience that appreciates a more eclectic style of film. People may stumble across your movie on Netflix,

Here are some of the more intriguing films in the AFF lineup. The Congress: A studio makes a digital copy of the image of a well-known actress (Robin Wright, playing a washed-up version of herself), who becomes an ageless movie star. Film combines animation and live-action. Dog Days: Filmed over four years, this documentary recounts the efforts of an unemployed man to achieve his dream job as a hot dog vendor in Washington, D.C. Exposed: Beth B.’s documentary profiles eight performers who use nakedness to challenge social taboos and question the concept of “normal.” Handy: This one-of-a-kind live-action feature depicts the story of a hand – like, a real hand – which detaches from the body of a failed writer to find meaning in life. The Road to Fame: East meets West in this documentary about five students from China’s top drama academy who face personal and cultural challenges when they stage the American musical Fame.
ATLANTA FILM FESTIVAL
but it may be totally the wrong movie for them,” says Wood. “Festival-goers are interested in movies where the higher priority is not the technical gloss of the film. They’re a little more forgiving of budgetary restraints and the fact that the subject matter isn’t targeted to the mainstream.” Film festival screenings can even make movies better in ways viewers may not expect. Wood says that simply getting a film accepted by a festival provides a psychological boost after the exhausting process of production and editing. Filmmakers don’t always submit final cuts of their movies to festivals, and Wood admits, “I didn’t submit The Unwanted to Sundance because I knew that it was too raw at the time of the deadline.” He’ll have a chance to polish the film before the AFF screening, and may have the flexibility to make additional changes afterward, based on the audience’s response. Having brought his films to the AFF and other events, Wood has learned to avoid stressing over things like the quality of the projection and sound, and to enjoy the Q&As with audiences and mixing with his filmmaking peers. “Making a movie is so stressful that when you screen a movie, that’s when you can bask in the fact that you’ve completed it.”

FOX FUN FACTS IT’S JUST HISTORY:
BUTTERMILK PAINT AND 4.5 TONS OF POPCORN Do you know what a gem of a facility you have? Atlanta’s Fox Theatre was declared a top stop of the decade by Venues Today Magazine and the decade’s No. 1 non-residency venue worldwide by Billboard Magazine. Rolling Stone Magazine last year called the venue one of the “best big rooms in America” as part of its Venues That Rock series. The Fox is more than a place for live entertainment and events, it’s a living museum of architecture and historical memories, too. Did you know? ★ In 1863-64, the lot on which the Fox is set served as Fortification K, one of 25 fortifications built to defend Atlanta during the Civil War. ★ The Fox is a National Historic Landmark, the highest ranking on the National Register of Historic Places. ★ The Fox was one of the first air-conditioned buildings in the country, preceding even the White House. ★ To build the Fox today it would cost more than $300 million. ★ All of the Fox’s furniture was chosen by Eva Fox, wife of founder William Fox.
★ The ceiling has 96 stars, about a third of which have heat sensors that make them dim and brighten. ★ The Mighty Mo, a Möller Opus 5566 Theatre Organ, is the second-largest Mollër theater organ in the world. It was custommade in 1929 at a cost of $42,000. ★ The Fox serves more than 4.5 tons of popcorn each year. 60 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
