WE WOULDN’T BE HERE WITHOUT GRADY. WE HIT A DUMP TRUCK HEAD ON. When we came to, the engine was on top of us. We both suffered multiple compound fractures, broken ribs, and other life-threatening injuries. The work Grady did was amazing. It was a lot surgeries and a lot of time. When you go to a hospital, you don’t expect staff to care too much about the family members. The staff treated our family like they were a part of the Grady family. We can’t thank Grady enough.

Magic Moments The stage version of Dirty Dancing is designed to put its audience ‘in the movie’ By Julie Bookman

Baby and Johnny (Jillian Mueller and Samuel Pergande) perfect their paces in a scene from the North American tour of Dirty Dancing.

W

hen vocalist Jennlee Shallow opens Dirty Dancing, she is, as the song says, really experiencing “This Magic Moment.” She well remembers being 12 or 13 and finding the movie Dirty Dancing enthralling, even on a small black-and-white TV. “I could never have imagined I would become part of this story,” she says. A native of Trinidad and Tobago, Shallow grew up with little on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. Music, she says, “was my only escape from living in a shack and not having the perfect life. My mom was a single parent with four kids. Dirty Dancing had all the music I get excited about. That music meant freedom to me. It made me so happy.”

12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

She may have dreamed of a singing career, but there was no money for formal training. Nor were there dance lessons, although “if you don’t know how to dance then you are not on the island.” Her experience came from singing in small church choirs. When Shallow began college at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles, a teacher heard her sing and urged her to attend international auditions for The Lion King. “I knew nothing about an audition,” Shallow says. “I had not brought any sheet music. They asked me what was I going to sing, and I told them I had no idea. They asked if I knew ‘Amazing Grace’ and yes, I did, so that’s what I sang.”

“Feeding off the audience’s wild energy and excitement, that’s what drives me,” Shallow says.

Jennlee Shallow (Elizabeth), Doug Carpenter (Billy) and the company, at left. Below: Shallow.

Shallow beat out thousands of others at those auditions. College would wait (she did eventually finish). She was flown to Germany to join The Lion King cast there, understudying the role of Nala, then taking over the part there and in Australia. When her mother saw the show, it was the first time she’d seen her daughter perform outside of church. “I learned by standing in the wings, watching the others onstage,” Shallow says. “That is how I learned everything.” In Dirty Dancing, Shallow is primarily the lead singer. She plays Elizabeth, an employee at the Catskills resort where 17-year-old “Baby” vacations with her family in the summer of 1963. Shallow sees her role as that of the story-

teller and says, “I also see myself as the inner voice of Baby.” Unlike most musicals, the lead characters in Dirty Dancing — Baby and Johnny and the rest — do not break into song to express themselves. Baby’s story unfolds through a lineup of more than 40 tunes — pop, soul, R&B and traditional folk. Shallow calls it “a musical explosion.” A similar “storyteller” does the same for Johnny. Another difference from most musicals: Some numbers are performed live, while others come from recorded tracks. Audiences will be able to tell which is which. The memorable tunes from the 1987 Jennifer Grey-Patrick Swayze movie are here, from “Hungry Eyes” and “You Don’t Own Me” to “Yes!” and “(I’ve ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 13

know the story, they know so many of the lines, they want this music and they may even sing along. They can’t help it. They even love waiting for the iconic moment because they know it’s going to happen.” Be it a famous line — or a famous lift. “Feeding off the audience’s wild energy and excitement, that’s what drives me,” Shallow says. “We were all Baby’s age and we had our first crush, so we can relate. Then you’ve got the combination of the provocative dancing and this rich collection of music. Just so many layers coming together.”

Had) the Time of My Life.” Other songs that fit the story and time period have been added, including the Drifters’ “Save the Last Dance for Me” and Marvin Gaye’s “Stubborn Kind of Fellow.” Some attention has been paid to beefing up the political and social concerns of the day, which “have always been intrinsically tied in with the music of the era,” says Conrad Helfrich, the show’s music supervisor. One goal in creating the live show was to break down the barrier “that inevitably exists between a movie and the viewer,” Helfrich says. “In this production, the audience is effectively in the movie.” As Helfrich sees it, the music “purely exists to support the main characters, their thoughts, their hopes and their aspirations.” In her rendering of “You Don’t Own Me,” for example, Shallow expresses Baby’s intensity. It’s presented, says Helfrich, in an innovative and unexpected way. Most come to Dirty Dancing knowing what’s going to happen, Shallow says. “They

Flashback Pristine Sanibel Island preserves the state’s natural history

Sanibel Island, only 90 minutes by air from Atlanta, is a tranquil paradise populated by shorebirds, dolphins, manatees and river otters. It's a back-tonature excursion that returns you to the Florida of 60 years ago.

Sanibel was incorporated as a city in 1974 by residents hoping to stave off overdevelopment after construction of a causeway con-

IF YOU GO By car: The 600-mile drive is surprisingly easy, and doable in about nine hours. I-75 South takes you into Fort Myers. Then take Exit 136 and follow the signs 22 miles to Sanibel. By air: Most major airlines offer nonstop flights from Atlanta to Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). From there, Sanibel is a 25-mile drive.

Businesses were restricted from using gaudy colors or constructing buildings taller than the tallest palm tree, and homes had to be built a certain distance from the shore. There are no high-rise buildings, no neon, no stoplights or chain restaurants (except for a Dairy Queen, which was built before 1974). What you’ll find is nature at its most unspoiled. The man responsible for protecting huge swaths of the island is also the person its 5,200-acre National Wildlife Refuge is named for: Jay

Norwood “Ding” Darling. Ding (a contraction of his last name) was a popular political cartoonist in the early 20th century. He used his art to criticize industrial pollution, hunting and deforestation, and won Pulitzer Prizes in 1924 and 1943. An avid conservationist, Ding created the Federal Duck Stamp Program and designed its first stamp. He was tapped by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to lead the U.S. Biological Survey (the forerunner to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service), founded the National Wildlife Federation and emphasized the importance of creating an organized network of nature sanctuaries — what’s now known as the National Wildlife Refuge System. In the early 1940s, Ding helped block the sale of 6,400 acres on Sanibel to real estate developers. The island’s vital barrier island ecosystem was per-

manently protected when President Harry Truman signed an executive order creating the Sanibel National Wildlife Refuge in 1945. Now known as the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, it remains a sanctuary for more than 270 species of birds and the endangered or threatened American alligator, Wood Stork, Florida manatee and five types of sea turtles. But the refuge is not Sanibel’s only noteworthy attraction, and outdoor adventure lovers will find plenty to do here. The island was named one of the Top 10 Kayaking Locations in North America by Canoe & Kayak magazine, with trails such as Tarpon Bay’s Commodore Creek and the Great Calusa Blueway offering exceptional scenery and up-close wildlife encounters. It’s also a haven for fishermen. In 1885, William H. Wood reeled in a 93-pound tarpon off the Sanibel coast. That catch revolutionized sport fishing, luring luminaries such as Teddy Roosevelt, Thomas Edison and Ernest Hemingway. Today, Captain Mike Smith of Mangrove Island Char-

ters (a Sanibel native with more than 30 years' experience) guides anglers in search of redfish, snook or tarpon. Expect to see dolphins and manatees along the way. For its small size (17.21 square miles), Sanibel has an impressive array of conservation organizations. The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation manages 1,800 acres of wildlife preserves; its Nature Center offers 4.5 miles of hiking trails, shoreline discovery walks and more. Sanibel Sea School offers day- and weeklong programs that give kids and teens an interactive introduction to the island’s abundant marine life. C.R.O.W. (Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife) has an excellent Visitor Education Center, as well as a veterinary hospital that treats more than 4,000 injured animals every year. For travelers less interested in activities than R&R, Sanibel Island is treasured for simple pleasures. You can kick back on the beach with a good book, listen to the waves lapping against the shore or take a sunset stroll in search of lightning whelks, fighting conchs, olive snails and sand dollars, whose ubiquitous presence gave birth to a posture known as “the Sanibel Stoop.”

Touchdown! Hall of Fame ‘about the whole sport of college football’ By Hally Joseph

T

he doors of the College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-fil-A Fan Experience open and two new guests (or “fans” as the All-Access Pass credentials call us) enter. One is a football fanatic; one is definitely football-challenged. I’m the latter, convinced for years that “past” interference was a play retroactively noticed and corrected. So bringing my mega-fan brother, Nick, with me to tour the new downtown attraction was a must. I thought I might half-see the Hall of Fame through his eyes, but as we arrived in the grand atrium-style entryway known as the Quad, we uttered a synchronized “Wow.” To the left, a floor-to-ceiling mural by Steve Penley depicts a kaleidoscope of national football spirit. Straight ahead, 768 helmets create a wall of shining headwear. Every college football team in the nation is represented, with blank spots for future additions. Some helmets are lit up, letting you know that an Auburn or a Notre Dame fan has visited today. We can easily see that a Georgia Dawg is pawing through the exhibits. From the start, the 94,000-square-foot Hall has an interesting something-for-everyone appeal, activated the moment you touch your RFID badge credential to a screen, sign in and select your favorite team. “Traditional halls of fame just had statues and plaques,” says spokesman Marcus Margerum. “This is a very interactive exhibit. It’s not just about Hall of Famers. On the second floor we have exhibits dedicated to cheerleaders, bands, mascots. It’s about the whole sport of college football.” Once your credential is activated, your visit to any or all of the Hall’s three stories will be personalized for your favorite team, creating an undulating stimulus-response experience that blows away all notions of a normal museum. “Fan” Nick Joseph sees how he measures up on the height board.

IF YOU GO Address, Phone: 250 Marietta St. N.W., Atlanta, GA, 30313. 404.880.4800. Hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday-Friday; 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday. Closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Admission: $19.99 adults. $16.99 ages 3-12. $17.99 age 65-plus, students and military (at box office only). Season passes available. Parking: Behind Hall of Fame. Entrance off Baker Street.

Downstairs, the 45-yard, real-turf Playing Field features the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Skill Zone, where you (or your thrilled brother) can kick a field goal, leap into the air to catch a football knowing there’s the safety of a cushion beneath you or see yourself dancing on the Jumbotron. On the second floor, museum meets modernity as flashing screens combine with traditional displays that cover everything from tailgating to the evolution of equipment, from storied rivalries to beloved coaches. High-tech experiences await: Sit at a desk in front of a green screen and try your hand as a host of ESPN College GameDay, discussing the contest with ESPN’s Chris Fowler and Desmond Howard. Karaoke your team’s fight song. Take a photograph and digitally face-paint your game-day colors. Call a historic play and hear your voice as the narration. This is where the Hall of Fame really strikes a contemporary chord: digital share-ability. You’ll be connected to all of these interactive experiences when you leave, so you can share them on social media and with friends and family. They are digital souvenirs to you, and savvy 54 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

marketing for the Hall. The top floor features the Hall of Fame itself, still high-tech but more classic in construction, representing more than 900 players and 200 coaches. An incredible view of downtown reminds you that you’re in the center of Atlanta’s cultural playground. “Sure, the big attractions here are for tourists, but they’re for us, too,” says John W. Stephenson Jr., president and CEO. “We residents seem to hesitate to waste a Saturday downtown. We hesitate to recognize how good we really have it compared to other cities, all these worldclass attractions gathered in one place.” Whether you’re there for the love of the game or simply fascinated by the smart uses of technology, the College Football Hall of Fame makes for a fun family visit, date night or company outing. Even someone as football inept as I am will be amazed by the touchscreens, the fur-coated tailgaters of yore and the play-like feel of Atlanta’s latest attraction. My brother? He shouts so loud during his play-by-play that he momentarily loses his voice. “Play it again!” my family requests later that night, laughing as he clicks replay on the All-Access Pass on his phone. His Facebook profile picture is changed within an hour. The shot? Him kicking a field goal.

FOX FUN FACTS THEATER THANKS ITS SAVIORS WITH ‘LEGEND LIVES ON’ CAMPAIGN Forty years ago, arts and history lovers joined in a remarkable effort to save the Fox Theatre from demolition. To mark the anniversary, the venue is saying thank you with a yearlong celebration of events and initiatives.

FIRST SOME BACKGROUND ★ By 1974, the Fox Theatre had fallen into disrepair, far from its glory days as a Shriners’ mosque and movie palace. ★ When news of a planned demolition became public, Mayor Maynard Jackson’s office, citizens, students and local businesses fought to rescue the landmark. The “Save the Fox” campaign was born. ★ Over the next several years, the Fox became a living museum and took steps toward becoming the nonprofit institution it is today.

AND NOW, 'THE LEGEND LIVES ON' In addition to its usual shows and concerts, the Fox will hold special events throughout 2015. These include: ★ “Friends of the Fox”: This membership program returns as a way to support the theater and its statewide renovation efforts. Benefits range from advance notice of shows and special ticket offers, to Coca-Cola Film Festival tickets, backstage tours and exclusive membersonly access and events.

★ Fox Theatre block party: The 40th anniversary celebration culminates June 7, 2015, with this party, intended to give Atlantans exposure to the theater’s magic through concerts, tours, activities and prize drawings. Free and open to all. ★ The 2015 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival: This annual event will include a daylong showing of 40th anniversary movies with throwback pricing.
