I WOULDN’T BE HERE WITHOUT GRADY. I FOUND A LUMP. So, I went to Grady and had a mammogram. I had Stage II Breast Cancer. I was afraid at first but my team at Grady made me feel so comfortable. Now I don’t have to be afraid. I’m doing real good. I’m on radiation. I’m going to be cancer free. I tell everybody if you find a lump or if you think something is wrong, go to Grady.

ow to account for the phenomenal success of The Phantom of the Opera? Maybe it’s the title character’s romantic pain, his profound loneliness. Maybe it’s Andrew Lloyd Webber’s lush music of the night. Or the opulent Paris opera house setting, enhanced by dramatic lighting and characters in elaborate costumes. There are many theories for the popularity of the show that opened in 1986 in London, and, in New York, has chalked up more than 11,000 performances to date. It’s easily Broadway’s longest-running musical, still regularly grossing $1 million a week. “I think it’s that no matter who you are, there’s a character in the show you can identify with,” says Heather Chockley, one of four stage managers for the “newly conceived” road tour of Phantom, now making its way around the country in 21 tractor-trailers. This massive tour includes a cast of 37 plus 20 crew members who travel with the show; 100 more are hired in each city. Associate director Seth Sklar-Heyn has another theory on Phantom’s enduring appeal. “Whether you go into it as a romantic or not, you encounter a man who only wants one thing — to be loved by one person,” he says. “If that’s not universal, I don’t know what is.” Sklar-Heyn believes that he represents many theatergoers who want to experience “something that will move me in a way that film can’t.” Phantom, he says, has all the goods: “It’s a production where the music moves you, the visual moves you, the story moves you. Sklar-Heyn works for Cameron Mackintosh, Phantom’s name-above-the-title producer. In addition to overseeing the Broadway production, he pops

12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

into various cities to ensure the touring show remains tight, fresh and balanced. “Above all, I want the audience to get the story clearly,” he says. “For that to happen, all the parts must be unified, from the sound and the music to the performance levels.” New York audiences continue to experience the original production, but this tour gives theatergoers across the nation the first opportunity to see a “fresh look” Phantom, according to Mackintosh.

The story, script and original costumes, created by Maria Björnson, remain the same although the new version includes some Björnson designs that haven’t been used until now. In this version the Phantom himself is onstage more; in the original, he’s often heard but not seen. And that famous falling chandelier? It still falls, but the new design is by Howard Eaton, who created the fiery 2012 Olympic rings in London. “This chandelier weighs one ton,” says Chockley. “It’s rigged to

move in new and terrifying ways. It’s particularly fun for the people in the audience sitting under it.” The scenery is entirely new. The goal was to create a design that would do more to contrast the Phantom’s dark and dank backstage world with the traditional opera-house setting. The set’s centerpiece is a massive wall unit that Chockley and crew members call “The Beast.” It rotates on something like a train track, can move in various ways and split open to create other settings. Those familiar with the

original Phantom likely will notice that more real-life details have been added to settings. And yet the updated Phantom is less about design elements than sensibility. “You could call it a more naturalistic, contemporary approach to both characters and story,” says Sklar-Heyn. After all, he says, theatergoers’ tastes have changed since the 1980s, as have performance styles. Also, much more is possible — and even expected — in technical wizardry, from digitalized lighting to pyrotechnics. Director Laurence Connor was given the chance to “fill in

more blanks, to clarify details, to redefine perspectives,” Sklar-Heyn says. And the actors have had a certain freedom to put an individual stamp on their characters. Actors, as many of us know, say “break a leg” to wish each other luck before a performance. Chockley and crew members have their own saying: “We say ‘See you on the ice.’ "This is a very complicated show and everything depends on everyone,” she says. “So that’s our way of saying, ‘Hey we’re all in this together and it’s slippery out there, so let’s be careful.’ ”

ETIQUETTE 1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins. 3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting. 4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

Water is a big part of Savannah's mystique., as this sunset view of the Talmadge Memorial Bridge proves.

Savannah

Smiles

uch has changed since Margaret Mitchell compared Savannah and its coastal companion Charleston to "aged grandmothers sunning themselves placidly in the sun" in Gone With the Wind. Scarlett O'Hara was born 150 years too soon to hang out with the party crowd that fills downtown’s rooftop bars every night and patrols the hangouts and beaches on Tybee Island. But not you. An hour by air or three to four by car from Atlanta (depending on where you live and whether you consider speed limits absolutes or advisories) deposits you in the revitalized heart of what's known as the Garden City, Hostess City and several other nicknames. No matter what you think you know about Savannah, it's more than "The Book" (John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and 48 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

Evil) and the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade bacchanalia. Here are six reasons to run down there this weekend or any weekend. We could have come up with 50 or more. If we missed your favorite excuse, let us know. 1. COCKTAILS TO GO Here's the way to do open carry. Ask your friendly bartender (try the HangFire Bar on Whitaker Street) to pour your leftover Moon River brew or Scorpion Tea into a plastic glass, and you're ready to amble or pedal to your next stop. Yes, we said pedal. Savannah Slow Ride offers 100 percent pedal-powered, eco-friendly, 15-person bicycle tours. One of your options is the pub crawl. Don't stray too far away from the nightspots on River and Bay streets, though. The open-container law applies only in the downtown Historic District.

2. GHOSTS EVERYWHERE The past is an inextricable part of Savannah's present, so you should expect some of its long-departed citizens to still be hanging around. A ramble at dusk through the Colonial Park Cemetery at Abercorn and Oglethorpe streets can raise the hairs on the back of even the most rational person's neck. The more glamorous Bonaventure Cemetery doesn't have the history of murder, voodoo and grave desecration that the 264-year-old Colonial does, nor its nearby ancient dueling ground. You might lose track of time wandering among the gravestones of Savannah's departed, but beware! The gates are locked at 8 p.m., and those yellow-fever victims buried in the 1700s don't make comfortable overnight companions. If you do exit pursued by a phantom, seek shelter on a nearby porch painted an ethereal blue. Lowcountry legend holds that "haint blue" or "Savannah blue" repels restless spirits because the color reminds them of water or heaven.

Savannah Stopover. March 5-7, 2015. Forget about snagging tickets for South by Southwest. SXSW comes to you via the Savannah Stopover. This multi-venue music festival began as an oasis where small indie bands traveling to Austin for SXSW could pull off I-95, catch some Z's and play a gig or two (and make a few bucks for gas and food, too). It has since taken on a life and a buzz of its own. 4. TORAH ON DEERSKIN Need a break from the tourist rush? Brush up your Hebrew and view one of the rarest religious artifacts in a city full of churches. It's the 15th-century Torah printed on deerskin, a treasure of Congregation Mickve Israel since its founding in 1733. You can see the Torah, and read from it if you remember anything from Hebrew school, on 45-minute tours that include the elegant sanctuary (10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. Monday-Friday).

5. SHOPPING ON BROUGHTON Skip the malls, and stroll the Broughton Street shopping district, which mixes familiar chains and small, locally owned ateliers that sell the kind of merchandise you really can't get back 3. PARTY, PARTY, PARTY The city that loves to party moves from one fes- home. Three places to linger: The Paris Market & Brocante. This home tival to the next without stopping. Three that décor and accessories shop revives the nearly are worth marking your calendars: Savannah Film Festival. Oct. 25-Nov. 1. If lost art of window dressing with ever-changing the Savannah College of Art and Design didn't displays. Give yourself at least an hour to poke launch Savannah's reputation as a film-friendly through the shop's collection of candles, soaps, furniture, lighting, specialty foods, books, town, it certainly paved the way. SCAD hosts kitchenware, linens and oddments from hither film screenings, parties, panel discussions and lots of celebrity-spotting in its lovingly restored and thither. Nourish Savannah. This might be Trustees Theatre and elsewhere. the best-smelling shop in the city. Owners Savannah Book Festival. Feb. 12-15, 2015. This free, four-day event brings in celebs Shoshanna and Corey Walker sell their own small-batch soaps along with carefully curated of a literary bent in order to get more people lines for face, baby, bath, aromatherapy and reading, writing and talking about books and ideas. It also sponsors author events periodical- candles. If the Broughton Street location gets too busy, visit the other shop a few miles southly throughout the rest of the year.

IF YOU GO GETTING THERE: Fly if you're in a hurry (Delta has 10 or so nonstop flights daily), but what you'd spend on airfare would pay for a couple of nights in a swanky B&B or riverfront hotel. By car, take I-75 south to Macon and I-16 east to Savannah. Watch for signs to downtown exits. WHERE TO STAY: Hotels are premium-priced from the Savannah River south through the Historic District, but the area also gives you the most choices, from familiar chains to newer, swankier joints (the Bohemian and new Cotton Sail Hotel, for example). For something homier, check out the colonial- and Victorian-era homes that are now B&Bs or vacation rentals. WORD OF WARNING: Leave your adorable strappy sandals in your hotel room. The Historic District’s charming but cobblestoned streets and squares can be murder on your ankles, especially after dark or after cocktails. Try fashionable flats or stylin' running shoes. If not, there’s always urgent care.

6. ROOFTOP VIEWING They're everywhere, especially in the hotels along Bay and River streets just up from the Savannah River. The city's swellest new hotels have chic overlooks where guests can toast sunsets and passing cargo ships and watch from a safe distance as tourists stream up and down from the riverfront. But even workaday hotels like the Holiday Inn Express on Bay Street and restaurants like Fiddler's Crab House give guests their own rooftop havens. You might also want to check out Rocks on the Roof at the Bohemian Hotel, the Top Deck at the Cotton Sail Hotel or Casimir's Lounge at the Mansion on Forsyth Park. Cheers!

ustard-craving Atlantans, rejoice. Your Shake Shack fix no longer requires a trip to New York. Just shimmy over to Buckhead, order your black-and-white malted, and browse the aisles at say, Christian Louboutin, or maybe Jimmy Choo. That’s right, Buckhead Atlanta — the long-anticipated, high-end, live-work-play development — is open for business. With the look and feel of L.A.’s Rodeo Drive, the dining, entertainment, shopping, office and residential juggernaut is gunning to become Atlanta’s reigning “must-see” and “must-be-seen-at” destination. It spans six city blocks at Peachtree and East Paces Ferry roads, an intersection some may remember as THE place to party in Buckhead. That changed eight years ago when the land was cleared and large cranes moved in to begin the project, originally known as The Streets of Buckhead. When the recession hit, construction stopped, and in 2011, OliverMcMillan bought the property, changing its name to Buckhead Atlanta. The commercial real estate company has developed similar projects in San Diego, Houston and Honolulu. Clearly, the stars of this show are the shopping and dining. With up to 60 anticipated retailers — many new to Atlanta — Buckhead Atlanta is positioning itself to become the new epicenter of an already well-known shopping mecca for must-have labels. (Move over Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza.) ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 53

HI, NEIGHBOR!

Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza have been preparing for the opening of Buckhead Atlanta, investing millions of dollars to attract their own luxury retailers and improve dining options. “Lenox Square did not want to be outdone,” says Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell. “They’ve invested in a new facade, new stores and new ideas.” Phipps Plaza is adding new paint and modern lighting and updating its interior. Phipps also will be adding a hotel and apartments, Massell says.

“Atlanta is the fashion icon hub of the Southeast,” says OliverMcMillan spokesman Rocell Viniard. “So it was really important to bring new concepts. There’s very little duplication in the retail or restaurant mix.” OK, but let’s talk shopping! Akris, Bella Bag, Christian Louboutin, diptyque, Helmut Lang, Jimmy Choo, Theory and Tod’s are among the 23 retailers that have signed on to open locations. Their customers will be able to taste everything from burgers to sushi to pasta. American Cut, Doraku Sushi, Gypsy Kitchen, Le Bilboquet, the Shake Shack, Georgetown Cupcake and Corso Coffee are among the 13 confirmed restaurants scheduled to debut through the end of 2015. Shops and restaurants will open as they’re completed, giving people a new and different choice each week. The development also will have 370 apartment homes for rent, ranging from 692-sq. ft. studios to 1,997-sq. ft. penthouses with three bedrooms. Residents are expected to begin moving in in November. “Buckhead Atlanta was designed to nat54 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

urally integrate into the existing structure of the city, which is not typical with this type of project,” Viniard says. “We wanted it to feel like it’s always been a part of the neighborhood.” The vision to blend Buckhead Atlanta into the city’s fabric begins with a welcoming and visually impressive exterior that can be seen by anyone driving by. The tree-lined streets look like they’ve been there for decades. A mature tree canopy of four 35-foot-tall oaks, plus 130 additional trees, are meant to provide shade in spring and summer and provide a color kaleidoscope in the fall. Two underground decks will offer free parking. Until then, complimentary valet parking is available. Sam Massell, president of the Buckhead Coalition, sees the shopping district as new way to attract people to his favorite neighborhood and as a benchmark for other retailers. “Competition begets competition,” he says. “We’ve had the title ‘Shopping Mecca of the South’ and Buckhead Atlanta expands on that.” Game on, Rodeo Drive, game on.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF BUCKHEAD ATLANTA

Four architectural companies teamed up to make sure no two of Buckhead Atlanta's buildings look alike. And they wanted the development to look as if it had always been part of the neighborhood..

FOX FUN FACTS THEATER’S DOORS CREAK OPEN FOR GHOST LIGHT TOURS

Back by popular demand! The Fox Theatre is again lifting the curtains of its eerie past this Halloween season for the venue’s second-annual Ghost Light Tours. Visitors can creep behind the scenes to experience spaces in the celebrated venue that are home to resident ghosts — spirits that loved the theater and its grounds so much that they have ... never ... left. Not to worry. There will not be a crashing chandlier. And the (mostly) friendly spirits include the lady of the house, a Confederate soldier and an actor from a previous performance. You’ll have to take the tour to meet the others. These tours, which began Oct. 11 and last one week, showcase the ghosts and their individual histories, along with real accounts of unexplained events gathered from Fox staff members and theater contractors. You’ll also learn about the history of the lot before the doors to the Fox opened in 1929. Tour locations include the boiler and power rooms; the dressing rooms; the main elevator; the stage-freight elevator; and the sub-basement. For times and ticketing information, visit foxtheatre.org, the Fox ticket office on Peachtree Street in Midtown or call 855.285.8499. Please note, Ghost Light Tours are not recommended for ages 7-10. Anyone under 6 will absolutely not be permitted. This vintage photo, which has an eerie quality to it, shows the right side of the orchestra section. It was taken by photographer Edgar Orr who shot the construction and interiors of the Fox between the years 1922 and 1964.
