Tim Rice on the stage musical Chess (London and Broadway), co-wrote a Swedish stage musical, were involved in the stage and film productions of Mamma Mia!, and continue to write songs together today. But it’s the music the quartet made together that has had an indelible influence on pop culture, and particularly the music of Sweden. Let’s take a survey. THE ’80S Roxette, formed in 1986 by Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle, was the first Swedish band to come

ike its Scandinavian brethren in Denmark, Finland and Norway, Sweden is a perennial stalwart near the top of the list of the world’s happiest countries. Driving through its impossibly green countryside — where litter is nonexistent, renewable energy sources such as wind turbines are ubiquitous, and everyone seems kind and courteous to strangers — it’s easy to see why. Perhaps that explains why Sweden has a 40-year history of sunny pop music so infectiously happy, it would give Pharrell Williams a sugar high. And it all started with ABBA. Formed in 1972 in Stockholm by Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad (who were romantic couples offstage), ABBA’s moniker came from an acronym of band members’ first names. Their breakthrough came in 1974, when the song “Waterloo” won the prestigious Eurovision Song Contest, making them the first Swedish artists to take home the prize. The band dabbled in the glam-rock sound that was trendy at the time, which Ulvaeus later acknowledged was a mistake: “[It] was stupid because we were always a pop group.” By 1975 it had found the formula for Billboard chart success, racking up a string of Top 40 hits that included “Waterloo,” “SOS,” “Mamma Mia” and “Fernando.” “Dancing Queen” gave the group its first No. 1 single in the United States, and by the end of the 1970s, ABBA was among the world’s most popular bands. ABBA’s music makers went their separate ways in 1983, staying together for four years after Ulvaeus and Fältskog divorced. While the women went on to respectable solo careers, Andersson and Ulvaeus collaborated with
close to approaching ABBA’s level of global pop success. Its third (Look Sharp) and fourth (Joyride) albums sold a combined total of 20 million copies, charting six singles that hit No. 1 or No. 2 on Billboard charts ("The Look,” "Listen to Your Heart,” “It Must Have Been Love," "Joyride,” "Dangerous" and "Fading Like a Flower"). They were even more successful in Europe, where Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf honored them in 2003 "for appreciated achievements in Sweden and internationally.”
THE ‘90S Three major acts emerged, achieving success on the pop, rock and dance music scenes. Ace of Base was arguably the biggest band in the world circa 1993, selling 23 million copies of its syrupy-sweet debut album, Happy Nation, thanks to the Top 10 singles “All That She Wants,” “Don’t Turn Around” and, especially, “The Sign” (which spent six weeks at No. 1). The Cardigans made a splash in indie-rock circles on the strength of the hit single “Lovefool” (“Love me, love me,

say that you love me”), which was featured on the soundtrack of William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet. Teen sensation Robyn broke out in 1997 when her dance singles “Show Me Love” and “Do You Know (What It Takes)” made it onto Billboard’s Top 10. She remains a Swedish icon today. 2000 & BEYOND In the past 15 years, Swedish music has had an increasingly high profile on the world scene. From electro-pop duo the Knife and indie-pop trio Peter Bjorn & John to garage-rock revivalists the Hives and singer-songwriter Likke Li, the sounds emerging from this Scandinavian nation are

impressive in scope and diversity. Emerging techno-pop acts such as Swedish House Mafia, Avicii and Icona Pop (whose debut single “I Love It” sold nearly 3 million copies) are providing the lively soundtrack for a new generation of dancing queens. But, as evidenced by the success of A*Teens (the tribute band whose 1999 album of ABBA covers sold 3 million copies) and the staying power of the Mamma Mia! musical (in its 13th year on Broadway), there has never been a Swedish band to rival ABBA’s enduring legacy. And, with about 120 million albums sold, there probably never will be.

BJÖRN ULVAEUS (Music & Lyrics) was born in 1945 in Gothenberg on the west coast of Sweden. After a successful local career with a folk group in the mid-’60s, he started his collaboration with Benny Andersson. They then went on to form ABBA with Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Even during the ABBA years, the idea of writing a musical seemed appealing and, in 1981, Björn and Benny met Tim Rice and co-wrote Chess with him, which opened in the West End in 1986. In 1995, Björn and Benny opened a new musical in Sweden called Kristina From Duvemala, which played for three years. In February 2002, the Swedish version of Chess opened in W O R K L I G H T P R O D U C T I O N S Stockholm. (Producer). Dedicated to creating and producing live entertainment. Follow the footsteps of Wilbur and Orville at North Carolina’s beachy-keen Outer Banks By Bret Love
S
tretching 200 miles and separated from the mainland by the Albemarle, Currituck and Pamlico sounds, the Outer Banks are a string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina and southern Virginia. The area is subdued in the off-season, due to its remote location (the nearest international airport is a two-hour drive away in Norfolk). But these islands jump to life in warmer weather, when thousands of travelers are attracted by their wide expanse of open beachfront and a climate tempered by steady breezes off the Atlantic Ocean. 38 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
FIRST IN FLIGHT
It was primarily those winds that attracted Orville and Wilbur Wright to the Outer Banks in 1900, when the two came to Kitty Hawk to begin their manned gliding experiments. The soft, sandy landing surfaces provided by the tallest sand dunes on the Eastern Seaboard were also a factor, not to mention the fact that the Outer Banks (which had no bridge to the mainland at that time) ensured privacy from the prying eyes of reporters. After three years of trial and error, it was here, on the island of Kill Devil Hills, that the Wright brothers made their historic controlled,
After three years of trial and error, it was here, on the island of Kill Devil Hills, that the Wright brothers made their historic controlled, powered airplane flights on Dec. 17, 1903. powered airplane flights on Dec. 17, 1903. Flying just 10 feet above the ground at a speed of about 7 mph, their first three flights didn’t even make it 100 yards. But the fourth and final flight covered 852 feet and lasted 59 seconds, ensuring their place in aviation history. The Wright Brothers National Memorial stands there today as a testament to their innovations, with walking paths tracing the actual routes of those four famous flights. The tourist attraction includes a 60-foot granite monument and an impressive Visitor Center museum featuring a life-size replica of the Wrights’ 1903 flyer, photos and other memorabilia, and tools and machines used by the brothers during their experiments.

FLEX-WING REVOLUTIONARY
Orville and Wilbur Wright weren’t the only aviation legends that found themselves drawn to the Outer Banks’ notoriously perfect wind conditions. California-based aeronautical engineer Francis Rogallo invented a self-inflating flexible kite, known as the “flexible wing,” in 1948. After releasing his patent to the U.S. government, Rogallo worked with NASA during the 1950s “space race” with Russia. They collaborated on experiments with what they called a “parawing” at altitudes up to 200,000 feet and as fast as Mach 3, in order to evaluate them as an alternative recovery system for space capsules. In the 1960s, Rogallo’s flexible wing essentially became the basis for all hang gliders. He eventually moved to the Outer Banks to test his new kite designs. Now, members of the U.S. Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association are called “Rogallo” members, and tens of thousands of people come to Nag’s Head

You’ll learn a good bit of this Outer Banks aviation history during 30 minutes of pre-flight instruction before a beginner’s hang-gliding lesson from Kitty Hawk Kites. In operation since 1974, it’s the oldest and largest hang-gliding school in the world. ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION 39
Hang-gl;iding is a great way to relive some of the excitement the history-making Wright brothers must have felt in December 1903.
After watching a short training video on hang-gliding safety — including how to strap yourself into the glider, use your shifting body weight to control the flight, and proper takeoff and landing techniques — students walk about 200 yards to Jockey’s Ridge State Park. It’s a perfect place to learn how to hang glide, offering massive sand dunes, soft spots for landing and winds typically in the 10-20 mph range. At the top of the dune, after getting into your safety gear, an instructor gets you into the harness, offers last-minute instructions, and helps you launch off the precipice and into the wild blue yonder. OK, so you’re really only 5 to 15 feet above the ground, but you’ll certainly feel like you’re floating through the clouds. The instructors hold onto tethered ropes the first few times, but by their fifth and final turn, most students are soaring solo, going anywhere from 30 to 100+ yards on each flight. It’s an exhilarating experience for anyone older than age 4 (they offer special classes for young kids), not to mention a wonderful way to relive the excitement the Wright brothers must have felt 111 years ago. There are certainly a lot of other reasons to visit the Outer Banks, but having a chance to take your own first flight is arguably among the best. 40 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

MEATYs Metro stage and film actors launch ‘That’s Educational,’ a mockumentary Web series about, well, actors playing actors.
By Julie Bookman Actor Jimi Kocina (above) ponders the possibilities of a fowl puppet. Matt Myers (opposite, top) and Eric Mendenhall (opposite, bottom) are the creative minds behind the cheeky new Web series.

ara is tired and disillusioned. She hasn’t made more than $20,000 a year since graduating from college. Co-worker Suehyla has had to miss every holiday, wedding, funeral, bar mitzvah and Super Bowl for the past 10 years. But those are the breaks. At least Cara Mantella and Suehyla El-Attar can legitimately call

themselves professional actors. They’re also two of the six performers in MEATY, yes, MEATY — Metropolitan Educational Atlanta Theatre for Youth. The group rehearses here and travels nationwide by minivan, with 267 bookings a year and seven “message” shows about such topics as nutrition, bullying and the dangers of the wicked weed.
Not really. MEATY was invented by Atlanta actors Eric Mendenhall and Matt Myers, creators of “That’s Educational,” a mockumentary Web series. Like all cast members, Cara and Suehyla are real-life actors who play skewed versions of themselves. The debut season — eight episodes of five to seven minutes each — is now available online. Much like filmmaker Christopher Guest’s full-length mockumentaries (Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, etc.), the plots and characters in “That’s Educational” are comically painful — because they seem just real enough. In a frog costume, a delightfully dense Jenny Holden bangs on the window of a car as it pulls
away, desperately asking the unseen child inside: “Did you like the show?!” In the season finale, most of the gang stands outside the van, bickering about how to fix a flat tire. MEATY member Jimi Kocina simply resigns himself to his fate, which means staying in the van and lighting a joint. The rest of the MEATY family includes Bryan Brendle (“narcissistic leading man”) and Nick Arapoglou (“overly eager new guy”). Justin Anderson directs, and Chris Bartelski is director of photography. Mendenhall and Myers are on the edge of their seats these days, waiting for word of mouth to build until enough fans (hopefully some with financial support), demand more episodes. The MEATY players are all Atlanta talents who have, collectively, performed at every theater in town and have a substantial number of film and commercial credits. Many have done educational theater, “which is just so ripe with eccentric characters and crazy situations,” says Mendenhall. “These people spend a lot of time together, and conflicts arise. The show is mostly about the bizarre way they work through these conflicts.” In one early scene, for example, MEATY cast members are costumed in bright-red crab-character getups. They’ve been called to an emergency meeting in what looks like a supply closet. Why the meeting? To learn the fate of a cast member who got a little too crabby and hurled his crab self off a school stage, attacking an audience member whose cellphone went off. With little cash on hand, Mendenhall and Myers have relied on actor friends and their connections to get the series produced. They shot scenes at Georgia Ensemble Theatre and
BEHIND THE SERIES MATT MYERS The co-creator and head writer is an Atlanta actor and voice-over artist represented by the People Store Talent Agency. You’ve seen him onstage at the Alliance Theatre, Georgia Ensemble Theatre, Synchronicity Theatre and Theatre in the Square, among others. He’s a University of West Florida grad and a substitute teacher for The Westminster Schools. ERIC MENDENHALL The co-creator is an actor and editor known for the films 42 (2013) and Lawless, Trouble With the Curve and What to Expect When You’re Expecting, all in 2012. You’ve seen him onstage in Waffle Palace at Horizon Theatre and at Georgia Ensemble, Georgia Shakespeare, Theatre in the Square and Theatrical Outfit. He’s had roles in the TV series “Revolution” and “Army Wives,” among others. He’s a Campbell University (N.C.) grad. Watch Season 1 episodes here: www.thatseducational.com/episodes/

North Point Church; the church also supplied the crab costumes. Mendenhall produces the series, Myers is head writer. The two also have roles. Mendenhall plays the “bitter tech ninja” who travels with the group. (“You look out there at their fatty, sweaty little faces, and you know you are just making a difference in their fatty, sweaty little lives.”) Myers plays a MEATY administrator, an affable nincompoop prone to making grandiose yet lame statements (“I’m high on the possibility of a better tomorrow.” Or “Defeat is temporary. Giving up is permanent”). In addition to Guest’s films, early fans of “That’s Educational” have said the series reminds them of the twisted humor on such TV shows as “Arrested Development,” “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.” “There’s not one single thing they’re comparing it to,”
44 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
Mendenhall says of the feedback he’s received. “I think that gives credence to the fact that we have found our own voice.” Feedback has been “incredible” so far, Mendenhall says. One recent highlight: He was getting coffee in Midtown and a guy approached him to say “I love 'That’s Educational!' It’s the most honest show I’ve seen!” Myers has sketched out episodes for a second season, conditional on financing and aligning schedules. About $1,250 is needed to produce each episode and pay the actors “a little something.” Mendenhall and Myers have big dreams. They hope they’ll create much more together, including feature-length films. But for now, they hope this first season of “That’s Educational,” sort of like The Little Engine That Could, will mark the beginning of their chug-toward-success story.

FOX FUN FACTS IT’S JUST HISTORY:
BUTTERMILK PAINT AND 4.5 TONS OF POPCORN Do you know what a gem of a facility you have? Atlanta’s Fox Theatre was declared a top stop of the decade by Venues Today Magazine and the decade’s No. 1 non-residency venue worldwide by Billboard Magazine. Rolling Stone magazine last year called the venue one of the “best big rooms in America” as part of its Venues That Rock series. The Fox is more than a place for live entertainment and events, it’s a living museum of architecture and historical memories, too. Did you know? ★ In 1863-64, the lot on which the Fox is set served as Fortification K, one of 25 fortifications built to defend Atlanta during the Civil War. ★ The Fox is a National Historic Landmark, the highest ranking on the National Register of Historic Places. ★ The Fox was one of the first air-conditioned buildings in the country, preceding even the White House. ★ To build the Fox today it would cost more than $300 million. ★ All of the Fox’s furniture was chosen by Eva Fox, wife of founder William Fox.
★ The ceiling has 96 stars, about a third of which have heat sensors that make them dim and brighten. ★ The Mighty Mo, a Möller Opus 5566 Theatre Organ, is the second-largest Mollër theater organ in the world. It was custom-made in 1929 at a cost of $42,000. ★ The Fox serves more than 4.5 tons of popcorn each year.
