4 | A Word From Teya Ryan Dear GPB Donor, I hope you’ll join us this month as we present executive producer, writer and host Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s new two-part series The Black Church, which traces the 400year history of the Black church in America. With this latest project, Gates continues his exploration of the African American experience previously brought to life through series including African American Lives and Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise, among others. Your support enables GPB to carry out our mission to help educate and inform viewers by airing stellar historical presentations such as these. We’re also highlighting GPB Education’s Slavery and Freedom Virtual Learning Journey, produced in partnership with Telfair Museums in Savannah. This project provides more insight into the history of slavery in coastal Georgia in context with stories presented in The Black Church and is further evidence of our commitment to educators and life-long learners. We’re excited to share more about our Be My Neighbor campaign, a community engagement initiative in association with the GPB Kids favorite Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. Check out the article to learn more about how you can participate and attend our virtual event with Daniel Tiger. Also this month, we’re happy to share the news of Political Rewind’s Bill Nigut being honored by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters. Bill’s dedication to his craft is evident in every program and is of great service to listeners. Thank you for your support. You ensure that we can continue this important work for communities across the state and beyond. With thanks, Teya Ryan

No social institution in the Black communityismorecentralandimportantthantheBlackchurch.” - Henry Louis Gates, Jr. This moving series from executive producer, host and writer Henry Louis Gates, Jr., traces the 400-year-old story of the Black church in America. Viewers will witness much of this world expand out to politics, culture and education, as churches are born, denominations are fractured, and leaders are made and critiqued in their quest to bring the Word to the world and the world to a higher ground.

PART ONE – Tuesday | February 16 | 9 PM Host Henry Louis Gates, Jr. explores the roots of African American religion, beginning with the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the extraordinary ways enslaved Africans preserved and adapted their faith practices under the brutal realities of human bondage. As an awakening of Protestant Christianity spread in the 18th century, Black Americans embraced a vision of a liberating God and Black churches that would become bedrock institutions in the long struggle to dismantle slavery, culminating in the Civil War. With Emancipation and Reconstruction, independent Black churches flourished and helped the formerly enslaved navigate a perilous freedom by fulfilling the social, educational, financial, cultural and political needs of African Americans.

PART TWO – Wednesday | February 17 | 9 PM The series continues with the Black church expanding its reach to address social inequality and minister to those in need, from the exodus out of the Jim Crow South during the Great Migration to the heroic phase of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and ‘60s. After the violent loss of leaders like the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., many Black churches found themselves at a crossroads — struggling to remain relevant in an era of increasing secularization while reckoning with urgent social and cultural issues within their congregations and broader communities. The series brings the story of the Black Church up to the present — a time of renewed struggle for racial justice in America.

SLAVERY AND FREEDOM VIRTUAL LEARNING JOURNEY EXPLORES ANTEBELLUM SAVANNAH

Scullery at the Owens-Thomas House in Savannah, GA. Credit: Telfair Museums GPB Education’s Virtual Field Trip collection allows students to explore Georgia’s rich culture and history without leaving the classroom. This month, we spotlight the Slavery and Freedom Virtual Learning Journey. Launched in collaboration with Telfair Museums, it explores the complexities of slavery and freedom in antebellum Savannah through the lens of the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. The project was launched in response to a 2017 report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center that concluded that students lack a basic knowledge of the important role slavery played in shaping the United States and the impact it continues to have on race relations in America.

NOVA: BEYOND THE ELEMENTS WEDNESDAYS, FEBRUARY 3-17, 9 PM

Learn how photosynthesis impacts human life. Science writer David Pogue sets out on a worldwide quest to find the key molecules and chemical reactions that have paved the way for human civilization, life and even the universe as we know it. Along the way, he uncovers the simple principles that produce such a dizzying diversity of matter from elements on the periodic table. In part one, Pogue dives into the transformative world of chemical reactions, from the complex formula that produces cement to the single reaction that’s allowed farmers to feed a global population by the billions—a reaction that when reversed, unleashes the powerful chemistry of high explosives.
