SERIES PREMIERE
SUNDAY, JANUARY 10 | 9 PM James Herriot’s adventures as a veterinarian in 1930s Yorkshire get a glorious new adaptation in All Creatures Great and Small, a seven-part series from MASTERPIECE based on his beloved books. Since their first publication in 1970, the books of James Alfred Wight, published under the pen name James Herriot, have sold more than 60 million copies internationally. Chronicling the heartwarming and humorous adventures of a young country vet, the books introduced readers to his unconventional mentor and the cast of farmers and townsfolk who lived and worked in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1930s. All Creatures Great and Small opens in 1937, when James Herriot, fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, follows his dream to become a vet in the magnificent Yorkshire Dales, one of England’s most beloved and beautiful landscapes. He soon discovers that treating the animals is as much about treating their owners, and the Dales’ farmers are a tough crowd to please. Newcomer Nicholas Ralph makes his television debut as the iconic vet who became renowned for his inspiring humor, compassion and love of life. Samuel West (Mr. Selfridge, On Chesil Beach) plays Siegfried Farnon, the wonderfully eccentric veterinary surgeon and proprietor of Skeldale House, who reluctantly hires the recently qualified Herriot into his rural practice.

BEAT THE WINTER BLAHS AND LEARN ABOUT THE WEATHER WITH NATURE CAT
Winter is upon us, and in Georgia it can be a very unpredictable season, as we adapt to ice, rain, snow and even warmer temperatures when we least expect them. Shorter daylight hours and weather conditions sometimes make it less feasible for kids to play outside, but we’ve got something to help keep the winter blahs away!
*
Learning about the weather can be a fun activity that helps kids develop observation skills and make smart choices about what clothing to wear, chores and other activities.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT JANE HIATT PASSPORT GIVING CHALLENGE
This month, we’re spotlighting Leadership Circle donor Jane Hiatt as we launch The Jane Hiatt Passport Challenge, a matching gift opportunity for both new and existing donors giving $60 or more per year to access GPB Passport. Hiatt began her career as an educator in North Carolina before moving to Tennessee to become the first female director of the Tennessee Council for the Humanities. She would eventually serve as executive director of the Mississippi Arts Commission, and she also holds the distinction of hosting the Mississippi Public Television program Artifacts in the early 1990’s.
J ane Hiatt
“This is a great opportunity to expand the team of people supporting this station by showing that we’re in this together.” – Jane Hiatt However, Hiatt says her appreciation for public media actually began in the ‘60s when she started listening to WUNC Public Radio. Throughout her geographic transitions, she has always remained an avid consumer of public media. Now living in Georgia, Hiatt says her favorite radio show is GPB’s Political Rewind. She also tunes in daily for PBS NewsHour and enjoys Masterpiece Mystery!. “This is a great opportunity to expand the team of people supporting this station by showing that we’re in this together,” said Hiatt. “It’s an incentive. I’m giving, so you give. My incentive is to help expand the base of support and available programs. There’s a fundamental principle that even $10 (per month) can make a difference because of the connectedness of people who value public radio and television. It takes that kind of support.” To learn more about The Jane Hiatt Passport Challenge, visit gpb.org/passport. encore

He later served as host of All Things Considered for 30 years until his retirement in 2018.
As part of the discussion, GPB’s Virginia Prescott will explore topics with Langfitt and Siegel including:
How foreign correspondents get a true sense of place in a foreign land Understanding culture and perspective so that you provide discerning reporting Framing international stories for an American audience The perception of the U.S. around the world and how it’s changed over 40 years
