A Word From Teya Ryan

Dear GPB Donor, I hope you’ll tune in this month as we mark a significant date in history - the 50th anniversary of NPR’s first on-air broadcast in 1971 with the premiere of All Things Considered. We’re proud to uphold NPR’s mission and present a special installment of the NPR Virtual Speaker Series featuring public media luminary Susan Stamberg. We’ll also commemorate the lives of fallen military servicemen and servicewomen with our broadcast of the annual National Memorial Day Concert. Other programs to watch for this month include the four-part series Extra Life: A Short History of Living Longer, which celebrates public health heroes and the extraordinary strides that have been made in extending the human lifespan. Finally, we’re excited to premiere Donkey Hodie, a new series for kids inspired by the character from the classic program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. And speaking of inspiration, we want to thank you, our donors, for helping GPB make these programs and resources available and touch lives in communities across the state. With gratitude, Teya Ryan

ALL THINGS
CONSIDERED
NPR MARKS THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS FIRST ON-AIR BROADCAST
Hosts Audie Cornish (Left), Ailsa Chang (Center), Mary Louise Kelly (Right). On May 3, NPR will mark the 50th anniversary of its first on-air broadcast, the 1971 debut of All Things Considered. It was quite a day for news, as over 20,000 protesters gathered in Washington, DC to demonstrate against the Vietnam War. All Things Considered documented the antiwar protest, taking listeners inside the scene on the streets of Washington to hear the voices of protesters, police officers, veterans and office workers. In 2017, that day’s broadcast was inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. At the time, Ari Shapiro, who currently serves as one of the hosts, along with Audie Cornish, Ailsa Chang and Mary Louise Kelly, shared his thoughts about the program in a feature for NPR’s Behind the Stories. “For every major news event in my lifetime, All Things Considered has been there to make sense of what is happening,” he said. “Being a part of this program has always felt like a privilege and a responsibility, never more so than now.”

GPB will celebrate this important NPR milestone with a special edition of our NPR Virtual Speaker Series on Tuesday, May 18 at 7p.m. GPB’s Virginia Prescott will be joined in conversation by one of NPR’s “founding mothers” Susan Stamberg, along with All Things Considered host Mary Louise Kelly. The first woman to anchor a nightly news program, Stamberg began hosting All Things Considered in 1972 and has won every major Susan Stamberg
award in broadcasting.

“For every major news event in my lifetime, All Things Considered has been there to make sense of what is happening.” – Host Ari Shapiro Host Ari Shapiro. NPR has also announced upcoming plans for a special commemorating the anniversary and a news magazine series that examines a changing country. Stay tuned to your local GPB Radio station to find out more.
“These days, news happens all day long,” said Rickey Bevington, GPB’s award-winning Atlanta-based host of All Things Considered for all of Georgia. “ The beauty of All Things Considered is the program curates all of the day’s news with clarity, civility and sanity.” GPB Senior Correspondent/Host Rickey Bevington.

GPB RADIO COMING SOON – GPB CLASSICAL
GPB is committed to producing and presenting the best in public media to communities across Georgia and beyond. Coming soon, listeners can access GPB Classical, a 24-hour HD Classical radio station. This exciting new channel will provide music programs from Georgia and around the country. GPB Classical is brought to you by the generous support of GPB Leadership donors like Stan Brown, from Macon, Georgia. Brown, who is an instructor at Columbus State University, grew up watching Georgia Public Television, but it was only in college that he began listening to Peach State Public Radio, as GPB Radio was known then. “I listened to the news programs first, but then gradually more of what then was a full daytime schedule of classical music programming,” said Brown. “After college, I began listening to the opera broadcasts. I didn’t come from an opera-listening household, but I was hooked! In the years since then, I have become a supporter of the Atlanta Opera and visited the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Without the radio broadcasts, I wouldn’t have developed that interest and appreciation.” If you’re interested in making a transformational gift that will create more experiences like Brown’s and help broaden GPB’s offerings, please let us know.

DONKEY HODIE EMPOWERS KIDS TO DREAM BIG
PBS KIDS SERIES INSPIRED BY MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD PREMIERES MONDAY, MAY 3, 10 AM.
GPB takes kids to the whimsical land of Someplace Else for the new series Donkey Hodie, which centers on the adventures of Donkey Hodie, an enthusiastic, “can-do” yellow donkey with a bright magenta mane. As the granddaughter of the original Donkey Hodie character from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (now known as “Grampy Hodie”), she and her pals Purple Panda, Duck Duck and Bob Dog, encourage preschoolers to aim high, embrace challenges and work hard to achieve their goals. Inspired by the quirky, funny side of Fred Rogers, Donkey Hodie furthers the children’s TV pioneer’s mission of helping young viewers navigate the challenges of childhood. In Someplace Else, everyone’s big dreams are possible— whether it’s Purple Panda finding the end of the Golden Rainbow, Duck Duck planning a Book-A-Palooza Festival or F red Rogers and the original Donkey Bob Dog playing the largest kickball game in history. Hodie.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT This month, we’d like to recognize GPB Leadership Circle donors Cecil and Sandy Hudson. The Watkinsville, Georgia couple has been supporting GPB for 38 years and say their lives are deeply enriched by public media, and they can’t imagine living in a place without access to public radio and TV. “Throughout the day, I listen to a wide variety of programs,” said Sandy. “I am always learning something new and being enlivened. Together, my husband and I watch PBS NewsHour, English dramas and many well-crafted documentaries.”
“We are proud to be supporters of GPB Radio and Television. What a privilege for us.”
– Sandy Hudson
Cecil, a retired physician, has been listening to public radio in Georgia since the ‘60s. Sandy who worked for the University of Georgia Press for 25 years, has listened to Athens station WUGA FM since moving to Georgia in 1980. “I ended up in Athens in 1976, and in 1980, WUGA was started, and I suddenly had a local station that I could listen to,” said Cecil. “I started giving because I appreciate the service and want to support it.” Ultimately, the couple says they contribute to ensure GPB’s future success and longevity. “We want the fine journalism and great programming of all sorts to be available for the next generations of Georgians,” said Sandy. “We are proud to be supporters of GPB Radio and Television. What a privilege for us.” Cecil and Sandy Hudson.
