THE NEW NATIONAL TOUR OF HAIRSPRAY IS HEADED TO TPAC IN JUNE

A new national touring company of the Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray is coming to Tennessee Performing Arts Center® June 11-16.

The high-spirited, brightly-colored 2002 musical is filled with warm-hearted comedy and energetic dancing, but also has a social conscience.

What Is the Show About? Set in Baltimore in 1962, Hairspray tells the story of teenager Tracy Turnblad, who dreams of dancing on TV’s “The Corny Collins Show.” Tracy overcomes prejudice against herself for her weight, and against

her friends for their race, to become one of the stars of the show, to integrate the cast—and to help her overweight mother to overcome her embarrassment and feel proud of herself and her daughter. The story is based on real-life events surrounding the real-life “Buddy Deane Show” that ran on Baltimore TV during the same period.

What Is the Musical Version of Hairspray Based on? Hairspray is adapted from director John Waters’ 1988 film of the same title.

Who Wrote the Hairspray Musical? The show has music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Shaiman and Wittman have collaborated on many shows and movies, including Some Like It Hot, Mary Poppins Returns, Catch Me If You Can and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Who Is Starring in the Touring Production? Greg Kalafatas as Edna, Caroline Eiseman as Tracy, Deidre Lang as Motormouth Mabel, Josiah Rogers as Seaweed, Skyler Shields as Link, Ralph Prentice Daniel as Wilbur and Andrew Scoggin as Corny Collins.

When Did Hairspray Play on Broadway? The show opened Aug. 15, 2002, and ran 2,642 performances, winning eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The original production starred Harvey Fierstein, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Dick Latessa, Kerry Butler and Matthew Morrison.

Was the Musical Made Into a Movie? Yes. Directed by Adam Shankman, the film was released in 2007, starring John Travolta, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Christopher Walken and Michelle Pfeiffer.

What Are Some of the Songs in the Show? “Good Morning, Baltimore,” “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now,” “Welcome to the 60’s,” “Timeless to Me,” “Without Love,” “You Can’t Stop the Beat.”

Who Is in the Creative Team for the National Tour? The new touring production reunites Broadway’s award-winning creative team, led by Director Jack O’Brien and Choreographer Jerry Mitchell.

Her debut album, Jagged Little Pill, was followed by nine more eclectic and critically acclaimed albums, all of which continue to influence and inspire fans and fellow artists alike. Productions is an Entertainment company founded by Marla McNally Phillips to create and produce new works and to support and enhance those projects, shows, and artists that want nothing less than to change the world. Jagged Little Pill, Under My Skin Work Light Productions, formed in 2005 for purposes of developing new work for young audiences, WLP has since grown into a full service producing, investment, general management and technical supervision company.

ACCESSIBLE SERVICES

TPAC strives to present diverse experiences in the performing arts and arts education which are accessible to everyone.

Accessible services include parking, elevators, wheelchair seating, use of a TPAC wheelchair, designated restrooms, and services for patrons with limited hearing and vision. Sensory Friendly kits and infrared assisted listening devices are available at no charge and may be picked up at the patron accessibility kiosk in the lobby. TPAC offers American Sign Language, Open Captioning, Audio Description, and Braille programs on the Sunday matinee in the HCA Healthcare / TriStar Health Broadway at TPAC Season, presented in partnership with Nissan. Large print programs are available for Broadway at TPAC shows. Special accessibility requests and concerns may be discussed in advance by emailing Access@TPAC.ORG.

Restrooms for Jackson Hall are located one level down from the 6th Avenue entrance, and on each level inside the theater. Restrooms for Polk Theater are located down the stairs to the left of the entrance to the orchestra level and on the tier level.
