“Aggle, Flaggle, Klabble!” Have you ever been so wound up that you couldn’t even find the words to express your excitement? That’s exactly how I felt when Virginia Shearer, the Eleanor McDonald Storza Director of Education at the High Museum, called me and asked if we’d like to collaborate around children’s book author and artist Mo Willems. After harnessing my joy, I was able to manage a quick and very enthusiastic “YES!” In a wonderful twist of fate, it so happens that our beloved Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and Families, Rosemary Newcott, directed the world premiere of Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical some five years ago at the Kennedy Center. That show also featured a scenic design by our very own Kat Conley. It felt like a homecoming. Just like Trixie (the young protagonist in the play), our creative team would be reunited with their lovable bunny once again. While that original production wound up touring the country and beyond (traveling as far as Bahrain), I had always hoped that Atlanta audiences would also discover the joy and unbridled fun of this production. And it seems only fitting that our first foray into celebrating the art of children’s picture book art starts with Mo Willems. For Knuffle Bunny is a glorious story of firsts: the first trip to the laundromat for a father and daughter, the first experience of missing a friend, the first words of a child. This experience also marks a number of firsts for the Alliance: our first summer family show, our first large-scale collaboration with the High Museum of Art (make sure you stop over and see the absolutely stunning Seriously Silly! The art & whimsy of Mo Willems exhibition running through Jan. 10, 2016), and the kickoff of our first campuswide effort to make all of the youth and family programming we do more easily accessible to Atlanta families. So, thank you for being among the first audiences to share in this joyful experience. Please come back and join us this fall for Play the Play With Cat the Cat, our world premiere Theatre for the Very Young show inspired by Mo Willems’ “Cat the Cat” series. Newcott, the Alliance’s Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and Families, leads the stage musical of Knuffle Bunny for a second time.

“He’s just tremendous in the room,” Newcott continues. “His observation skills are so sharp and his ability to see how young people think and feel is really honorable. For me, he is one of those people who really lives his art.”

In 2010, she directed its premiere at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Willems spun the show out of his 2004 best-selling autobiographical picture book about a daddy-daughter trip to the laundromat. He made sure to include gigantic

“I’m curious to see how this production differs from the original,” says author/illustrator Mo Willems (at right, with a particularly close friend). “Theatre should be an organic opportunity to change and morph.”

dancing laundry — “the bigger the better.” “He has this wicked sense of humor that doesn’t stop,” Newcott says. She guided the original cast to achieve just the right balance “between showing real love and slapstick frustration,” Willems says. “I’m curious to see how this production differs from the original, which I hope it does. Theatre should be an organic opportunity to change and morph.” “Knuffle,” by the way, is pronounced “KA-nuffull.” It’s the Dutch word for “hug.” Who ka-new? Willems, 47, has created more than 40 children’s books, and several have won top literary awards, including three Caldecott Honors and two Theodor Seuss Geisel Medals. Besides Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale and its follow-up, Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity, his many titles include Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! and the Elephant and Piggie early-reader series. Just out is I Will Take a Nap!, the 23rd title in a series featuring best buds Gerald and Piggie. Willems’ work is “filled with love,” Newcott says, and his humor tickles adults as much as it delights kids. “One of the things that makes his work so spectacular is that there’s a level of sophistication that makes it all-audience programming. That’s

what I look for in every single thing I direct.” Willems wants his work to be accessible and invites kids to try drawing his characters — much like he started out by drawing Charlie Brown. He gets armloads of fan mail in which kids include drawings of wide-eyed Pigeon in comical situations. Here’s what else Willems had to say in an email chat: Question: When did you first start drawing and making up stories? Answer: I have wanted to draw and be funny from the time I drew on the walls with my poop as a toddler. Once I graduated to crayons and paper as a medium, I focused on copying Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the whole “Peanuts” gang. At age 5, I wrote to Charles Schulz and asked if I could have his job when he died. Q: How did writing for “Sesame Street” help you grow as a storyteller? A: “Sesame Street” changed my life twice. First as a child, when I was captivated by how funny the Muppets were and how cool the cartoons looked. I feel certain that sparked a ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

desire to write and draw. Then again, in my early 20s, I was invited to write scripts and create animated films for them. My efforts on “Sesame Street” made me fall in love with the demandingly philosophical world of writing for children. Because children are new here, they haven’t had the time to get the myriad cultural references we take for granted. So your palette is limited to the core philosophical issues: What is love? Why do people hurt each other? Can I drive the bus? Q: How did you get the idea that Knuffle Bunny could become a musical? A: Turning Knuffle Bunny into a musical is a terrible idea. Many of my ideas are terrible ideas, because for me “terrible” simply means “hasn’t been tried before.” And I like trying things. The “terrible” idea here was creating a musical starring someone who couldn’t speak. That’s funny. So, the big aria of loss and love and fear is the heart of the show and, to me, “terribly” poignant. Q: Did you have a Knuffle Bunny or stuffed toy as a child? If so, do you still have it? A: I did have quite a few stuffed animals that hung out with me. My favorite was Red Lamb, an, uh, red lamb who, incidentally, was also my fiancée. In addition to having a menagerie of stuffed friends, I was employed by an Invisible Boss at an Invisible Invention Factory. I no longer have the stuffed animals and eventually married someone else. I do, however, still have that Invisible Boss. Q: Of all choices, why a pigeon? Why did that creature become your signature character? A: A hippopotamus would not fit on the page. Also, it’s a “terrible” idea to give a pigeon a starring role.

Wait! There’s even more Mo coming to the Alliance, too Just as Knuffle Bunny hops onto the Alliance stage, a retrospective of Mo Willems’ work is on exhibit at the High Museum of Art. Seriously Silly: The art & whimsy of Mo Willems, features almost 100 works by the children’s author and illustrator. It marks the first time the Alliance and the High Museum are offering work by the same artist at the same time. The High exhibition runs through Jan. 10, 2016. Willems sees Seriously Silly as an opportunity “for children to discover the joy of visiting a museum and to remind adults that simple and easy are two very different things.” Even more Mo is coming this fall: • The Alliance’s Theatre for the Very Young (ages 18 months to 5 years) stages a new production, Play the Play With Cat the Cat based on the “Cat the Cat” book series by Willems, Oct. 2-Nov. 15. • The Story of Diva and Flea, written by Willems and illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi, comes out in October. It’s Willems’ first chaper book. • The Kennedy Center remounts Willems’ second musical, Elephant & Piggie’s We Are in a Play! (Nov. 23-Dec. 31). It will tour the country beginning next spring and continuing through the 2016-17 season.

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre has become the leading producing theater in the Southeast, creating the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people. The Alliance values excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. Reaching more than 200,000 patrons annually, the Alliance delivers powerful programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, the Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance Theatre, in 2007, received the regional theatre Tony Award in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 80 original productions including Tony Award winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice, and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. The Alliance has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act: The Musical; Come Fly Away; Bring It On: The Musical; Stephen King and John Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; the American premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings; and most recently, Bull Durham and Tuck Everlasting. The Alliance also nurtures the careers of playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing a premiere for the competition winner as part of the regular season, and the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, providing developmental support and production resources for three performing arts projects each year. The work produced by the Alliance gives locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Each year the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department reaches close to 50,000 students through performances, acting classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level, from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to the groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance also offers community education classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest, and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development, working with local and national playwrights. An active participant in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatrical techniques to aid in student learning through storytelling and problem-solving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts, which focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K–2nd grade, and dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Education Department as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access.

Tumors have nowhere to hide Patients now have somewhere to turn The future of cancer treatment is here. And it’s only available at WellStar. WellStar is the only health system in metro Atlanta to offer TomoTherapy® and CyberKnife® for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.

TomoTherapy

CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System

Unlike conventional systems, which allow radiation to be delivered from only a few directions, TomoTherapy rotates in 360 degrees, meaning that treatments can be delivered continuously to the tumor from every angle. More beam directions give physicians more control in how they plan treatments – and more assurance that the dose will be confined to the tumor.

The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System involves no cutting, and for many, can offer a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of tumors. The system is composed of a radiation delivery device, which is mounted on a flexible robotic arm which enables CyberKnife to deliver radiation to tumors anywhere in the body. Its exceptional tracking ability eliminates the need for patients to have stabilizing head frames or limited breathing during treatment.
