Susan Booth: Hey, Kevin — it would appear that, oops, we’ve done it again, and invited you back. (I trust you caught the Brittney Spears lyrical reference that I’m using to establish my “I’m cool enough to hang with the Dad’s folks” credibility.) It appears, too, that you’re doing a show with a lot of punctuation marks in the title. Can you f@*ing explain that? Kevin Gillese: Susan — look, I don’t know how to tell you this but ... that Brittney Spears song you referenced ... it was released in 2000. That was 15 years ago. That is not current in any way. But this show at the Hertz, on the other hand, was just written over the past few months so it’s about as current as it gets, and I’ve always believed that the best way to communicate “cutting-edge” is to put a swear word in the title. Right? SB: Sh**, yeah, Kevin. Although I wonder if you could give me any advice on how I might respond to those patrons currently reading our exchange who are going to write me dismayed letters about my use of profanity and lack of propriety? And remember, these are folks I like a lot and upon whom I depend? KG: I guess I would tell them that comedy is about pushing boundaries, it’s about exploring topics that are “off-limits” and using the power of humor to allow us to say things that we wouldn’t normally be allowed to say. And if that intellectual justification doesn’t fly, I guess I’d just say: come on, man, all the kids are doing it! SB: Kevin — that all sounds terrific, but I think I have an even better idea. I think I’m going to send those folks directly on to you. Think of it as my holiday present to you!

Dad’s Garage returns with another show to shake up the holidays. By Julie Bookman
M
ost of us know someone who has had it up to here (all the way up to their clenched teeth and flaring nostrils), with holiday joy, shimmer and schmaltz. Or someone who winces at yet another telecast of “Rudolph” with his nose so bright or “Charlie Brown” lugging around that pathetic tree. Perhaps you know or may even be someone who’s – just plain Nutcracker’d out. This is the person for whom Merry %#!*ing Christmas tolls. (If you have trouble saying the title, just go with Merry Bleeping Christmas). The all-new show from Scratch, the Canadian writing-performing team of Kevin Gillese and Arlen Konopaki, is wild, wacky and more naughty than nice. Scratch is the Edmonton duo’s “trademark brand” of improvisational theater, admired for its wit and brains as much as its sheer lunacy. Actors play multiple roles in a Scratch show, which always contains three outrageous
storylines on something of a collision course. In Merry %#!*ing Christmas, which is fully scripted, the main stories involve an evil Santa with weapons of mass destruction; a partly redeemed Ebenezer Scrooge zapped to the future to save Christmas; and “the loneliest orphan in the world.” There’s also an androgynous Frosty the Snowperson and a miserable single dad, among others. The Scratch formula involves such components as musical montages and actors jumping and spinning in place to signal transitions. Gillese and Konopaki developed the formula in 2004, then traveled across North America, Europe and Australia performing as Scratch. In 2009, Gillese (pronounced GUH-lease) moved to Atlanta to become the artistic director of Dad’s Garage, but he continues to write with Konopaki, now a film and video director based in New York City. And Dad’s regularly dabbles in Scratch fare. Gillese and Konopaki
hammer out ideas and plot points via phone, then each writes specific scenes to send to the other guy, who’s allowed to fiddle further – if he feels he must. This is the second consecutive holiday season Dad’s is doing an original holiday show on the Alliance’s Hertz Stage. Last year’s It’s a Wonderful Laugh whisked audiences to Bedford Falls, the setting of the 1946 holiday movie classic It’s a Wonderful Life. Each performance was a different beast, as the audience called upon the actors to improvise characters who crashed the story to throw the plot off course for George Bailey and the rest. “We’re just very happy to be invited back,” Gillese says. “We wanted to do something full-on this time, rather than a show that relies on improv. We’re thrilled that Susan was willing to let us run with it, he says of Alliance Theatre artistic director Susan V. Booth. “It’s very cool of her and shows a lot of faith and trust from her.” As co-writer and director of Merry Bleeping, he “only ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

deal with it, says Gillese, but he wants them to jump swiftly back on script. “I ask them to not overdo it.” Is it hard to stick to a script when you regularly inhabit the improv arena? Not really, says Mark Kendall, a Dad’s Garage ensemble member who plays (among other things), the miserable single father in Merry. “The scripted shows are a nice change,” he says. The cast features Dad’s regulars who have performed a boatload of improv together, “so we know each other well. We have great chemistry.” Kendall enjoys the chance to help launch an original Scratch script. “Kevin and Arlen are great writers. Their writing style is fast-paced and filled with great physical stuff. All the characters have arcs, so you get that nice balance of building a character that has somewhere to go.” And there’s real meat. “Scratch is so good at delivering more than comedy,” Kendall says. “Amid the heart, humor and hilarity there are real stakes, strong relationships going on, characters who care about each other.” If you happen to love Christmas and all its trimmings, fret not. Kendall says you’ll get your fix. “But there’s plenty for those who also hate traditional holiday plays.” A

If you like the Scratch style, check out “Hart of America,” a new Web series from Gillese and Konopaki and their first effort for the screen. Set in a state park, the series (10 five-minute episodes) features several top talents from Dad’s Garage and celebrity guests such as Fred Willard. Gillese plays Bigfoot. Visit hartofamerica.com
Funds roll for new Garage Dad’s Garage Theatre Company lost its longtime Inman Park home to redevelopment in 2013. Since then, it has performed mostly at 7 Stages in Little Five Points while running a successful capital campaign. The company continues at 7 Stages through Dec. 31, then moves to the new, permanent Dad’s. The new space, an old church at 569 Ezzard St. in the Old Fourth Ward, is being renovated. More than 1,200 donors from more than 25 states and seven countries contributed to the effort through a Kickstarter campaign.

promised her one thing: that it would be funny and good.” It’s crucial to the continued success of Atlanta’s theater scene, Gillese says, “for theater companies with different aesthetics and different sensibilities, to be working together.” The 20-year-old Dad’s Garage is known both for its outrageous scripted productions and an endless stream of improv shows. With last year’s It’s a Wonderful Laugh, Dad’s attempted to tone down its usual racy mischief. Gillese says they went with the title Merry %#!*ing Christmas this time “to better let everyone know exactly what they’re getting themselves into.” There’s no gory violence or nudity but expect plenty of cursring and other R-rated content. “We get to flip a lot of Christmas stuff on its head,” Gillese says. “We like to reverse expectations.” The scripted shows from Scratch spring from material Gillese and Konopaki mined while touring. “Because we were doing improv, we were churning out all of this new material,” Gillese says. “After each show we would fill up these little notebooks with jokes, plots and other things.” Merry Bleeping Christmas is their fourth scripted show that incorporates some of that material. Last spring’s Battle Space Wars, described as a Battlestar-Galacticaparody-turned-Sharknadospoof-turned-Armageddon sendup, was another. If something happens during a Merry Bleeping performance to throw things off course, actors can acknowledge it and
