Homecoming. The word conjures a whole lot of nostalgia — dances, football games — autumnal gatherings where we bump into our past and look at people, places and events anew, through the lens of time passage. Nick's Flamingo Grill is one ginormous homecoming. It’s the story of a moment in Atlanta history that is both past and evergreen. It’s the return to the Hertz Stage of writer Phillip DePoy, whose 2015 Edward Foote was one of those “you have to see it” events. It’s the return to the Alliance family of actress Tinashe Kajese-Bolden, but this time joining us as a director. And it’s your return — and ours — to the friendly confines of the Hertz Stage and the Woodruff Arts Center after a season on the road. And it seems all kinds of perfect to be doing so with an Atlanta story, a returning writer and an artist evolving into a new role, because this past year has been one of deep community engagement, familiar practice and new definitions as the Alliance has been on an Atlanta road trip. While we’ve learned some new ways of making theater this last season, we’ve also been reminded of what’s important about this art form — and that is its singular capacity to bring us together in the ancient act of telling and listening to human stories. Whether we’re doing so in a garden, a history center or here in the Hertz, we’re doing something simple and simply sacred; we’re investing our time and our ears and our hearts in the act of empathetic witness. Call it a homecoming, call it a ritual, call it a night out. For my money, it’s never been more essential than it is right now. Welcome home. We’re glad you’re here.

or a character in one of Phillip DePoy’s mystery novels, “finishing a sentence” means serving jail time. For the Atlanta author and playwright, it’s something in his daily writing session that he may choose not to do. On occasion, DePoy will deliberately stop work in the middle of a sentence, a delicious way to foster anticipation for his next day’s journey into the play or novel he’s writing. “My writing schedule is the same as it’s been since I was 15 in 1965,” he says. “I write every morning as soon as I wake up and have coffee. Every day, sick or well, busy or sane, married or single.” “You’d think I’d be a lot better at it by now,” he says, joking. Nick’s Flamingo Grill, a world premiere musical, brings DePoy back to the Alliance Theatre for the first time since 2015’s Edward Foote. That Appalachian-set gothic murder mystery with music proved buzzworthy and won Suzi Bass awards for best world premiere and best play in Atlanta professional theater that season. DePoy, at 69, has a genial, self-effacing exterior that houses a prolific and disciplined scribe. He calls his almost 50-year career in the arts a “sampler plate” — actor, playwright, director, musician, composer, novelist and educator. As Theatrical Outfit’s artistic director in the 1990s, he turned the Atlanta company into one that made music. He led Clayton State University’s theater department for eight years, was a Georgia Council for the Arts writer-in-residence for a time, and has written 20 novels and 43 plays. In 2014, he was nominated for Georgia Author of the Year for December’s Thorn, one of seven thrillers in his Fever Devlin mystery series. Icepick, his 20th novel, comes out this month. Writing is DePoy’s way to process the world around him. By the time he’d reached his teens, he’d already had experiences that would incubate in his brain and influence his work for decades. In the mid-1960s, Phillip followed his younger brother, Atlanta actor-musician Scott DePoy, in joining the Actors and Writers Workshop, an early seed in Atlanta’s theater scene. It was run by Walter and Betty Lou Roberts, the parents of film actors Eric and Julia Roberts. Coretta Scott King was a sponsor and the King children were members. Phillip developed a friendship with Yolanda King, a few years his junior. “She was a girl, she was really smart and we kissed,” he says of their youthful attraction. That kiss came onstage in a production in which Phillip played a fox and Yolanda a turtle, a kiss only slightly less scandalous in the world of nature as it was in the 1960s South. They stayed in touch until King’s death in 2007. Nick’s Flamingo Grill was born of a similar childhood remembrance, one sparked by his dad, Bob, also a musician. “In the late 1950s, Dad would drive us from the south side of town over to where they kept the rich people, near Westminster, to go to swimming practice because Scott and I were on a swim team,” DePoy says. “As we drove by the Armor

Meat Packing Plant, now the Castleberry section of town, he’d point and say, ‘That’s where the club is.’” The club was a new, somewhat hidden and quasi-illegal jazz joint where the elder DePoy’s Atlanta Symphony Orchestra friends would moonlight. Unlike a lot of clubs then, race didn’t matter. Only the music did. Although firmly planted in a family of artists, DePoy still marvels at what an artistic collaboration can produce. Nick’s Flamingo Grill had the input of what he calls “objective and talented outsiders” (meaning non-native Atlanta artists) including Zimbabwe-born director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden (Synchronicity Theatre's award-winning Eclipsed). “She has a perspective I don’t have,” DePoy says. “She brings things to this production I never could.” DePoy is a multi-instrumentalist who can “make a noise” (his words) on almost 30 instruments, most of them stringed. He wrote 10 original songs for Nick’s Flamingo Grill with New Orleans-bred jazz pianist Tyrone Jackson. “He’s by far the hottest piano player I have heard in Atlanta,” DePoy says. “Ever.” Some fast facts: DePoy doesn’t own a cellphone. In his rare spare time he loves to cook for family and friends, garden, delve into the books of longtime favorites Joseph Campbell and Lao Tzu, and surprise himself with how well he can “fix stuff around the house.” He once rewired his Decatur home, reasoning, “How hard can it be?” Not that hard, apparently. The house passed inspection. He can do just about anything it seems, except dance. Strike that. DePoy says he can dance. “I have been known to do a dance,” he admits. “Usually when I’m in my cups.” He likes to refer to it as “reckless abandon.” Although DePoy has lived briefly in Paris, New York and Boston, and worked in dozens of other places, he always makes his way back to Atlanta and the arts community. “It’s a family here,” he says, “Every place else I’ve been I enjoyed doing the work, but I missed the family.” A

n the late 1950s, Phillip DePoy’s dad would drive him and his brother, Scott, from the south side of Atlanta through the Armor Meat Packing Plant district (now the Castleberry Hill neighborhood) to swimming practice at Westminster. On the drive, the elder DePoy would point out the window to a place where he'd meet friends to play jazz, saying, “That’s where the club is.” Until one day a few months later when he pointed out the window and said, “That’s where the club used to be.” Something that made the club so special was that it admitted black and white

musicians and black and white patrons in a time when most businesses were segregated. More of an ad-hoc jam spot in a run-down building than an actual club, DePoy has never been able to find verifiable proof of its existence. He suspects it never had a business license or even a name. DePoy has taken notes from conversations with his dad and his dad’s friends over the years to inform his new play. At right are recollections from people who played music at the club or attended this smoky, sultry, mysterious, nameless speck of Atlanta's unwritten jazz history.

ach year, the Alliance Theatreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Education program reaches more than 90,000 people through performances, in-school initiatives, camps and classes. Classes are taught by industry professionals and are offered year-round, with sessions beginning every six to eight weeks. Classes typically meet once a week for four to six weeks and are geared to youth, teens and adults at every experience level. Adult classes include several on acting for the stage (acting basics, process, scene study, the actorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s voice and more); acting for film; commercial and film auditions; playwriting; screenwriting; and voiceover workshops. Professionals can take scenestudy classes and master-class workshops. Teaching artists in the master class series have included playwright Pearl Cleage, actor-screenwriter Steve Coulter and actordirector Tinashe Kajese-Bolden, among others.

PHILLIP DePOY (Playwright, Lyrics, Additional Music) is the author of 20 novels (latest: Icepick) and 43 plays. An internationally reviewed performance artist, he was writer in residence for the Georgia Council for the Arts and composer in residence for the Academy Theatre in the 1980s. In the 1990s, he was artistic director at Theatrical Outfit and composed music for 17 Alliance productions (Angels in America, The Seagull, among others). Since then, he's served as the director of several university theater programs. He was Georgia Author of the Year in 2015. Favorite theatrical work includes the 2002 New York Edgar

Award-winning mystery play Easy, and, for the Alliance Theatre, the Suzi Bass Award-winning Edward Foote. His Appalachian Christmas Homecoming has been produced nationally since 1994. DePoy has an undergraduate degree in English literature and folklore, and a graduate degree in performance art. He is deliriously married to playwright Lee Nowell. TYRONE JACKSON (Composer, Orchestrator, Music Director, Conductor/Player) is quickly becoming synonymous with the quintessential jazz piano player. His creativity, coupled with subtle accompaniments, has him poised for national recognition. Born in New Orleans’ cradle of jazz, Jackson embodies the spirit of the Crescent City but has made his home in Atlanta. He has performed with Earl Klugh, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Jennifer Holliday and Marcus Miller, among others. Jackson is a professor of music at Kennesaw State University, where he teaches applied jazz piano, group piano (jazz), jazz improvisation II & III, and the blues. He is also a lecturer and clinician with the Rialto for Youth Jazz Ensemble. As a composer, he has released three CDs of original work: Dedicated, Another Voyage and Melody in Nede: Suite for Jazz Quartet. Jackson has written and arranged countless works for a litany of artists and performers. His songs are played with much acclaim to worldwide audiences on local and satellite radio. TINASHE KAJESE-BOLDEN (Director) is honored to be back at the Alliance Theatre and this time in the role of director! She directed a critically acclaimed production of Eclipsed at Synchronicity Theatre (best director, Suzi Bass Award); Graveyard Shift (finalist for the Kendeda playwriting festival); and Atlanta 24-Hour Play event with Working Title Playwrights. Other directing credits include In the Continuum at Clark Atlanta University; and Blood on a Cat’s Neck at Armory Theater. She next directs Native Gardens at Virginia Stage. As an actor, her Alliance credits include Hospice + Pointing at the Moon, Shakespeare in Love, Disgraced andBlues for an Alabama Sky. In October, she will reprise the role of Shelly

JODY FELDMAN (Casting Director) began her theater career as an actress in Atlanta before moving into administration as the assistant general manager at Frank Wittow’s Academy Theatre. Feldman is the Allliance’s producer and casting director. She joined the company in 1991 as casting director. She has cast and produced more than 200 LORT B, D and TYA productions at the Alliance, encompassing a range of world premieres that includes The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, What I Learned in Paris by Pearl Cleage, Broke and Troubadour by Janece Shaffer, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney and more than 10 years of Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competitionwinning plays plus such world and regional premiere musicals as Tuck Everlasting, Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical, Bring It On: The Musical, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, Harmony, A New Musical and The Prom. SUSAN V. BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Palefsky Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, local producing partnerships and regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on such projects as The Prom; Tuck Everlasting; Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’ da Noise, Bring in ’ da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. She has directed world premieres by such writers as Pearl Cleage, Janece Shaffer, former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey, Stephen King, John Mellencamp and Kristian Bush. She has directed nationally at the Goodman Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern, DePaul and Emory universities and is a past president of the board of directors for the Theatre Communications Group, the national service organization for the field. She is a trustee of Denison University and a member of the Carter Center’s Board of Councilors. Booth’s leadership is underwritten by the BOLD Theater Women’s Leadership Circle, an initiative to support and promote women’s theater leadership funded by the Pussycat Foundation. She is married to Max Leventhal and is the proud mother of Moira Rose Leventhal.

MIKE SCHLEIFER (Managing Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2014 as general manager, and in 2016 became managing director. While at the Alliance, Schleifer has led the administrative team on more than 50 productions and was one of the architects of the “On the Road” season, in which the Alliance produced 12 shows at 12 venues. He is proud to have started the Alliance’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and to serve on the League of Resident Theatre’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. Previously, he spent 13 years at Baltimore’s Center Stage, working as associate producer, production manager and

Jazz musician Tyrone Jackson has served as composer and music director for the Alliance productions of Native Guard and Nick’s Flamingo Grill. His recollections: “Initially when I was asked by Susan Booth about serving as the music director for Nick's Flamingo Grill, I said to myself, ‘They’ll never have real jazz in a show.’ But I met the creative team and knew it was going to be special. I quickly said yes and scheduled a meeting with playwright Phillip DePoy and director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden. We talked about gumbo. Jazz. America. Oh yeah, it’s the same thing! America’s cultural gift to the world, packaged in a pot, served by imperfect, multicolored hands. “My first partnership with the Alliance Theatre was with Native Guard. I was amazed at how a theater could be committed and focused on telling the truth about history in an artistic way. It came with the warning: ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’ I see this mantra again in Nick’s Flamingo Grill, how war about our differences will only bring death and sorrow, but jazz, food and relationships bring us together. Can we learn? The Alliance Theatre has been teaching us all along. Remember.” — Tyrone Jackson

about the alliance theatre Celebrating its 50th anniversary season, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fundsaving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre.
