Twenty years ago, when I first began the job of Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth & Families here at the Alliance, I was especially aware of the unique challenge I would face when programming for middle-school folks and their caregivers. I charged myself to provide content that would entertain and challenge, and help connect them to who they are at this particular part of their journey. Together with inspired playwrights, designers and actors, we have examined everything from classic stories to moments in history to pop culture. I wanted my final middle-school offering as artistic director to be very special and different than any of the other productions. I have a "dream board" in my office where I list projects I wish to someday direct. One particular title that called out was Paige in Full. Paige Hernandez is an extraordinary artist, choreographer and teacher, and most importantly, an honest and engaging storyteller. Her story, told through hip-hop, pulls no punches. I had hopes her story would resonate with my audience members, who also have proven to be authentic storytellers. In fact, a big part of the middle-school play experience has been learning from the experts: the teachers, parents and especially those very unique young people who never cease to surprise and enlighten. I have been so privileged to have shared time throughout the years with these folks and to have had the fringe benefit of bonding with my niece, Sylvie, who was among this populace during my time here. I conclude with a haiku poem created by a group of very artistic young ladies from our Alliance Theatre camp experience. It was written in response to Paige’s play and I think it sets up this performance in a beautiful way. Paige has spunk and life Threatened by unacceptance Hip-hop is her world

”I discovered that I had a story to tell about a strong woman who overcomes things and becomes empowered through hip-hop and theater,” says creator Paige Hernandez.

Teachable Moments Performance artist Paige Hernandez found her voice through hip-hop. In her one-woman show, she wants to inspire young people to chase their own passions. By Julie Bookman

rowing up in Baltimore in the 1980s, Paige Hernandez wrestled with her mixedrace heritage and “a world that seemed full of dismal possibilities.” She’s African-American, Cuban and Chinese. Where, and how, exactly, did she fit in? Her refrain: “Was I enough of any one thing?” Hip-hop helped her stop sweating the identity stuff and start strutting her stuff. “Hip-hop is really about swagger,” says the 37-year-old writer-actor-dancer-educator. “It’s about the ability to make anything and everything you have work to your advantage.” The genre’s dynamic beats, take-charge attitudes and multicultural influences gave Hernandez the courage and drive to embrace her own story, which she revealed in Paige in Full: A B-Girl’s Visual Mixtape, her high-energy, one-woman show. “I discovered that I had a story to tell about a strong woman who overcomes things and becomes empowered through hip-hop and theater,” she says. Paige in Full, part of the Alliance Theatre’s Family Series outreach to middle- and highschool students, reveals its creator’s comingof-age journey. It hits on themes of love, acceptance, bullying, toxic relationships and multiculturalism.

The show launched Hernandez’s career. Since its 2010 debut in Washington, D.C., she’s done it throughout the United States and around the world. All the while, she’s managed to create 10 more pieces, with titles like Havana Hop, which she describes as a “children’s tale of culture and confidence.” Hernandez, a Citizen Artist Fellow at the Kennedy Center, has been named a Rising Leader of Color by the Theatre Communications Group, the nonprofit service group for American regional theater, and a “Theatre Worker You Should Know” in American Theatre Magazine’s monthly column. Hernandez is on a mission to help kids find their passions, partly, she says, “because I found my voice and path through my passion.” She performs all of the public performances in the Alliance run, with Atlanta theater artist Chani Maisonet (the Alliance’s Dancing Granny, Theatrical Outfit’s Nina Simone) doing the role for school groups. It is the first time someone other than Hernandez will play “Paige.” Atlanta will teach me to pass this on, Hernandez says. “I need to retire it so that any young performer can take it.” The show pumps up traditional theater — hence its “visual mixtape” distinction — in a fusion of poetry, theater, dance, multimedia projections and turntable action that churns out

hip-hop, rock and punk beats. Paige in Full (the title is a play on Paid in Full, the 1987 hiphop tune from Eric B. & Rakim) is also a beginner’s course in the music genre that sprung from the Bronx in the late 1970s. Along the way, it remembers several lost hip-hop legends, including Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls, J Dilla and Michael Jackson. Hernandez has kept Paige fresh for the past eight years with new tracks and by updating hip-hop references. “You’ll get a little bit of everything to get my full story across,” she says. 8 ALLIANCE THEATRE | ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

According to DC Theatre Scene’s Porscha Coleman, “Paige in Full is the story of any true hip-hop lover, and her mixtape is the soundtrack of our lives.” When Hernandez was 8, she shared a bedroom with her little brother, Nick (now the D.C.-based hip-hop producer and artist Nick Tha 1da). The room became the venue for family dance parties on Friday nights. “I’d push the furniture away, have the boom box all ready, turn on my lava lamp and make our parents line up outside our room and give tickets to get inside,” Hernandez says. She’d create a new playlist each week. It was all about producing a successful event and everybody having a great time. “And you know what? That’s still what I’m all about.” Paige in Full is a hip whirlwind of positivity, but its creator didn’t shy away from deeper, darker moments. “I had to take the audience on a relatable journey,” she says. “They need to ultimately care enough to see me triumph.” A

he Alliance Theatre Education Department provides teachers with resources for integrating the arts into their classrooms and engaging students as artists and patrons. The Alliance Theatre Institute offers in-school residency programs and teacher professional development opportunities across the state of Georgia, all designed to support teachers and enhance student learning. The Alliance also hosts an annual Educator Conference each summer, in which participants experience world-class art and engage in workshops led by professional artists and educators. The three-day conference offers 20 contact hours of Professional Learning. In addition, the Alliance has a Tickets for Teachers program. Tickets for Teachers gives educators free tickets for select performances of most Alliance productions as a way of showing its appreciation for all the work educators do. profiles PAIGE HERNANDEZ (Paige Oct 5-12; Author, Co-Director, Choreographer) A Baltimore native, Paige is a multidisciplinary artist who is critically acclaimed as a performer, director, choreographer and playwright. As an AEA actress, Paige has performed on many stages throughout the country. She has collaborated with Lincoln Center and has been commissioned by several companies including the National New Play Network, the Smithsonian, the Kennedy Center and the Glimmerglass Festival. She has received an Individual Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council as well as two Helen Hayes (Washington, D.C.) nominations for choreography and performance. Paige has been named a “Classroom Hero” by the Huffington Post, a Citizen Artist Fellow by the Kennedy Center, “40 under 4” by The Washington Post and one of “Six Theatre Workers You Should Know” by American Theatre Magazine. profiles MIKE SCHLEIFER (Managing Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2014 as general manager, and in 2016 became managing director. While at the Alliance, Schleifer has led the administrative team on more than 50 productions and was one of the architects of the “On the Road” season, in which the Alliance produced 12 shows at 12 venues. He is proud to have started the Alliance’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and to serve on the League of Resident Theatre’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. Previously, he spent 13 years at Baltimore’s Center Stage, working as associate producer, production manager and resident stage manager. While in Baltimore, he spent seven years as an adjunct faculty member at Towson University and guest lectured all over the East Coast. Schleifer began his career as a stage manager and has dozens of stage-management credits in New York and regionally. He is married to theater director and educator Laura Hackman and is the proud father of two boys, Jack and Ben. SUSAN V. BOOTH ( Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Palefsky Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, local producing partnerships and regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on such projects as The Prom; Tuck Everlasting; Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’ da Noise, Bring in ’ da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. She has directed world premieres by such writers as Pearl Cleage, Janece Shaffer, former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey, Stephen King, John Mellencamp and Kristian Bush. She has directed nationally at the Goodman Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage 20 ALLIANCE THEATRE | ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern, DePaul and Emory universities and is a past president of the board of directors for the Theatre Communications Group, the national service organization for the field. She is a trustee of Denison University and a member of the Carter Center’s Board of Councilors. Booth’s leadership is underwritten by the BOLD Theater Women’s Leadership Circle, an initiative to support and promote women’s theater leadership funded by the Pussycat Foundation. She is married to Max Leventhal and is the proud mother of Moira Rose Leventhal.

Seventh-grade student Hannah Hubbert participated in an Alliance Theatre camp with Paige Hernandez this past summer. We asked her: Why do you think it’s important that the Alliance tells the stories of middleschool students? When students come to see these types of shows, they see their friends, they see themselves, they see situations that they have gone through. Kids are going through so many things and stories like these help to show them that anything is possible. Students from different lives will come to see Paige in Full and will be inspired and learn that no matter what’s going on in your crazy life, what bad things have happened, what good things are happening, that they are not alone. about the alliance theatre Celebrating its 50th anniversary season, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award for sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. In January 2019, the Alliance will open its new, state-of-the-art performance space, The Coca-Cola Stage at Alliance Theatre. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 110 productions including nine that transferred to Broadway. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fundsaving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre.
