There’s just something about a pancake, particularly a giant pancake for breakfast. It’s a beacon that somehow sets your day apart. That you needn’t worry too much, because your day is starting with a feast. Like Eric Carle and Jack (this story’s hero), my mother taught me how to make pancakes — step by step, painstakingly going through the process, appreciating the joy in the labor and the tasty result. I’m convinced that this shared act — the cracking of the eggs, the mixing of the batter — brings people closer together. Like theater. So, what a gift to combine these twin powers — pancakes & theater — in a glorious retelling of Eric Carle’s story Pancakes, Pancakes! Speaking of gifts, it’s not every day that one of the country’s leading playwrights decides to take time out of his absurdly busy schedule (he’s a lead writer and producer on “House of Cards”) to adapt a play about pancakes for young audiences. But that’s exactly what Alliance/Kendeda alumnus Ken Lin has done, crafting a beautiful piece of theatre that perfectly captures the joyous process of making pancakes and the unique artistic process of Eric Carle. As someone who had the privilege of growing up with Mr. Carle’s work, I could never overestimate the value of encountering the beauty and simplicity found in his astonishing catalog. I am confident that young people all over the world have Mr. Carle to thank for their first true artistic experience. Once faced with the majesty of Brown Bear or the colors of the Hungry Caterpillar, your sense of wonder is forever expanded, forever open to finding beauty in the unexpected. In the click of a beetle, say, or the making of a pancake. His ability to simply and gracefully tell these stories and render these images so beautifully is the mark of a true master — one whose work requires no prerequisite to appreciate, whose entire catalog is so accessible because it rings so true. It is no wonder that children from Seoul to Tokyo to Rome to Atlanta love his work. Thanks to a fantastic collaboration with the High Museum of Art, we are able to share Mr. Carle’s original artwork and his stories with all of you. Please stay tuned for our fall Theatre for the Very Young show From Head to Toe, inspired by the book of the same name. But now, please enjoy this theatrical feast. After the show, make sure you swing by the High Museum to view its stunning exhibit I See a Story: The Art of Eric Carle. After that, I trust it’ll be time to make a big pancake together!

Flipping for Flapjacks Making Pancakes, Pancakes!: The right ingredients bring Eric Carle’s delightful tale to the stage By Julie Bookman

ack wakes up to a rooster’s robust crowing and thinks, “I’d like to have a big pancake for breakfast.” He soon learns, however, that pancakes don’t grow on trees. Or come only from a Bisquick box. Jack’s mother is already up and busy. If Jack wants that pancake, he’ll have to gather the ingredients: flour, egg, butter, milk. But to get the flour, the wheat must be chopped and carted by a donkey to the miller for grinding. The hen must provide an egg. The cow must be milked. The cream atop the milk must be churned into butter. What an ordeal. Is Jack up to the task? Does he have the patience? The stick-to-

itiveness? Does he want that pancake badly enough? Eric Carle’s Pancakes, Pancakes! has delighted lap listeners since 1970. Who’d have imagined that 46 years after it was published, this simple story would become a world premiere family musical, with original songs by Atlanta playwright/composer Phillip DePoy (Edward Foote)? Or that it’d be the second large-scale collaboration between the Alliance Theatre and the High Museum of Art in as many years? As they did a year ago with Mo Willems and Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical, the two are simultaneously showcasing the work of a renowned children’s author-illustrator. While Pancakes,

out of a box. Jack has to work before he can enjoy his meal.” While working with Director of New Projects, Celise Kalke, Moses enlisted playwright Kenneth Lin to turn Pancakes, Pancakes! into something children and their grown-ups would want to see onstage. Lin (Warrior Class, said Saïd), an Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition alum, still writes plays while working on Netflix’s “House of Cards.” He’d never written a children’s play, but he has a soft spot for the Alliance, which helped launch his career. Lin, says Moses, is a brilliant writer. He knew that the playwright, the father of sons ages 3 and 7 months, would do “something incredible with Eric Carle,” something they wouldn’t have initially conceived.

Rooster’s vivid colors are the result of Eric Carle’s artistic process. He fashions illustrations by hand-painting and cutting bright pieces of tissue paper and arranging them on a neutral background.

Pancakes! bubbles at the Alliance, the High features the retrospective I See a Story: The Art of Eric Carle, running through Jan. 8. Pancakes, Pancakes! was chosen by Christopher Moses, the Alliance’s education director and associate artistic director, from dozens of works by Carle, a collage artist now in his mid 80s, and perhaps most famous for 1969’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Moses likes that Pancakes is less well-known than many of Carle’s other books (1967’s Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See; 1977’s The Grouchy Ladybug; and 1984’s The Very Busy Spider, among others). “What I really love is that it teaches everyone about the process of making a meal together,” Moses says. “I think that’s important — to know that a pancake doesn’t just come

Lin says simply, “Seeing how much joy a pancake can bring to a child is a pretty magical thing.” For inspiration Lin visited The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Mass. There he discovered Carle’s process of fashioning illustrations by hand-painting and cutting bright pieces of tissue paper and arranging them on a neutral background. Lin decided he could use Carle’s method in the musical. Playgoers will see characters take shape as pieces of colorful paper. Mother, for example, fashions a beak out of paper and attaches it to Rooster’s mouth. The intent is that the show resemble a picture-book-in-the-making. Of his immersion in Carle’s methods, Lin says, “I came to realize that if a 6-year-old could understand these techniques, then

we should be able to demonstrate them so a theatre audience would also grasp the concepts.” Carle’s work, says Moses, a fan since childhood, is “so moving and beautiful, it stops you cold.” As an arts educator, Moses has seen how deeply the work connects in the classroom. “First, it’s the arresting beauty of the artwork,” he says. “Then there’s the clarity and simplicity of his storytelling. There’s nothing extraneous in any of his stories ever. And they are so inviting. I think that’s what’s so compelling for kids, teachers, for anyone.” Playgoers will be able take part in activities that complement the experience of seeing the show. In other words, the Alliance wants you at the griddle. After all, says Moses, “Who doesn’t love making pancakes together?” A

ERIC CARLE writes: This photograph of me in a chef’s outfit is misleading. I am not a great cook. However, when asked what I would like to be if I were not writing and illustrating books for children, I have expressed my secret wish: to be an executive chef in a large and renowned hotel kitchen. I see myself in a white chef’s outfit, supervising a large and busy staff of hardworking cooks, sampling their roasts and sweet desserts. All right, back to reality! I do know how to prepare a few dishes when called upon. Those who have tasted my pancakes, crêpes really, have spread the rumor that they are devastatingly delicious. When I was a young boy, my mother showed me how to make a pancake. You will need: – 1 cup of flour – 2 eggs, lightly beaten – 1 cup of milk – dash of vanilla extract (optional) – butter – maple syrup or jam 1. Put the flour in a bowl. 2. Slowly add the milk and eggs and stir (avoid lumps). 3. If handy, but not absolutely necessary, add a few drops of vanilla extract. 4. Heat a frying pan.

is bigger, add more batter; if smaller, reduce the amount of batter. The point is that only a thin layer of batter should cover the pan. 7. After a minute or two, using a spatula, flip the pancake onto the other side. 8. After another minute or two, your pancake should be ready. 9. Spread about 2 tablespoons of maple syrup (warmed up) or jam (not warmed) on the pancakes, roll ’em up, and bon appétit! Hint: In the oven, preheat the plates on which the pancakes are to be served. Lukewarm pancakes are yucky.

5. When the frying pan is hot, melt one or two lumps of butter in it. As soon as the butter is melted, add about ¼ cup of batter into the frying pan. 6. Then right away, twist the frying pan so a thin layer of batter covers the entire pan. If the frying pan

profiles MATT ALEA (Jack) is 14 years old and excited to be playing Jack in his first Alliance production. Matt caught the acting bug in third grade while playing Winthrop in Tritt Elementary’s The Music Man. He most recently appeared in Atlanta Lyric’s The Full Monty (Nathan) and Peter Pan (Lost Boy Slightly). He has enjoyed two seasons of Because It’s Christmas (Tommy) on the historic Crystal Pistol stage at Six Flags. Other favorites include Gavroche in CCCPA/Pebblebrook’s Les Miserables and playing a young Shuler Hensley at the 2014 Georgia High School Theater Awards. At Act3, Matt appeared in his first adult show as the Newsboy in Jekyll & Hyde, The Musical and earned a Metro Atlanta Theater (MAT) Youth Award at age 11. His dream was always to return to America, the land of his happiest childhood memories. In 1952

he arrived back in New York, where he found work as a graphic designer in the promotion department of The New York Times. Later, he was an art director at an advertising agency for many years. Carle’s literary career began in 1967 when respected educator and author Bill Martin Jr. asked Carle to illustrate a story he had written. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? is the result of their collaboration and is still a favorite with children everywhere. Soon Carle was writing his own stories. His first wholly original book was 1, 2, 3 to the Zoo (1968), followed afterward by the celebrated classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1969). Carle’s books have been read by millions of children all over the world and have been translated into 62 languages. Today, Carle has illustrated more than 70 books, many of them bestsellers, most of which he also writes. More that 132 million copies of his books have sold worldwide. Carle and his late wife, Barbara Carle, co-founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Mass, in 2002. Author of five Flap Tucker novels and seven Fever Devilin books, his newest, A Prisoner in Malta, features Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe. In the 1980s he was composer-in-residence at the Academy Theatre. SUSAN V. BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Palefsky Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, local producing partnerships and regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on projects including Tuck Everlasting; Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away With Me; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’ da Noise, Bring in ’ da Funk and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. As a director, she has worked at such theatres as the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul universities and serves as adjunct faculty at Emory University. She is a past president of the board of directors for the Theatre Communications Group, the national service organization for the field, and is a trustee of Denison University and the Howard School. Susan is married to Max Leventhal and is the proud mother of Moira Rose Leventhal.
