nnovation is part of the culture at Georgia State University and we are extremely pleased to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the second most innovative university in the nation and second in the country for our commitment to undergraduate teaching and providing our students with an extraordinary education. Long recognized as one of the nation’s most diverse institutions, Georgia State ranks 10th among U.S. News’ most racially and ethnically diverse national universities. The Rialto Center for the Arts exemplifies Georgia State’s values and spirit. Indeed, it is reflective of the extraordinary diversity that is vital to downtown Atlanta’s continued growth. Just as Georgia State is committed to inquiry and exploration and to bringing the very best students, academics, researchers, athletes, and administrators from across the nation and the world to Atlanta, the Rialto is committed to showcasing the finest performers and performances the world has to offer right here in downtown Atlanta. Not only is the Rialto downtown’s leading venue for arts performances and independent film screenings, it is the city’s most eclectic performing arts venue showcasing the unfamiliar and the unexpected alongside the classics and rediscovered gems. The 2018-2019 Rialto Series season is no exception: You can experience classic American jazz musicians; music from India with a modern edge; dance from Spain, Latin America and North America; Mariachi music from Mexico; Afropop from Senegal and much more. Whether you’ve been a Rialto subscriber for the last two decades or you are joining us for the first time, we are thankful you have chosen to spend your time with us to explore new and perhaps unfamiliar artists, and experience unparalleled excitement, wonder and the one-of-akind shows that promise the best the world has to offer!

Anoushka Shankar | Saturday, March 16 | 8 p.m.
Modern Sitar Master Anoushka Shankar—sitar player, composer, and international sensation—blazes a singular figure across the Indian classical and progressive world music scenes. Drawing on classical ragas, Shankar possesses a dynamic and spiritual musicality that has earned her scores of accolades and fans worldwide. Audiences, according to Time Out New York, should “expect to be thoroughly intoxicated” when Shankar takes the stage. A six-time GRAMMY® Award nominee, as well as the youngest—and first female— recipient of a British House of Commons Shield, Anoushka Shankar began her musical journey at the age of nine, studying exclusively under her father and guru, the late sitar legend Ravi Shankar. She made her professional debut when she was 13 years old and, at the age of 20, became the first Indian female and youngestever nominee in the World Music GRAMMY® 8
category. Her recording career has produced 10 highly-acclaimed albums, as well as a film score, that range from Indian classical ragas to more experimental work, including collaborations with international pop stars, such as M.I.A. and Norah Jones, Shankar’s half-sister. Having performed in distinguished venues including Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Barbican Centre, Royal Festival Hall, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, and the San Francisco Opera House, Anouska Shankar brings to the Rialto Center a genre-defying cross-cultural musical dialogue that showcases the versatility of her instrument. Dubai’s (UAE) Khaleej Times declares Shankar delivers a “not…to be missed [evening of music that is] transporting, piercing the soul ’til the last drops of emotion [are] flowing through the body.”

Putting the “Mock” in Democracy
hen it comes to political theater, Washington, D.C. offers a rich, inexhaustible vein that the Capitol Steps have been spinning into song parodies and sketch comedy gold for audiences across the U.S. for close to 40 years. Putting the “mock” in democracy since 1981, the Capitol Steps return to the Rialto Center with a brandnew show from their Make America Grin Again Tour. Tastefully lampooning politicians, Beltway happenings, and the day’s headlines, the Capitol Steps shows are constantly changing and strenuously bi-partisan. All points on the political spectrum are welcomed and dutifully skewered. The group was started in 1981 by Elaina Newport, Bill Strauss, and Jim Aidala, staff members for Illinois Republican senator Charles Percy. They figured that if the newly elected 10 Rialto Center for the Arts | rialto.gsu.edu | #RialtoATL
President, Ronald Reagan, could be a politician, they, political operatives, were permitted to be entertainers. Born as a playful intra-party jab, the three Senate staffers created satiric song parodies and comedy sketches that quickly proved be as popular in the Rust, Bible, Grain, and Sun Belts as they were inside the Beltway. Across six presidential administrations—no matter which party is in power, which individuals hold office, or who is in the headlines—the Capitol Steps have tackled both sides of the political aisle with equal pizazz, punch, and playfulness. The Capitol Steps offer audiences two assurances: everyone’s politics will get spoofed and everybody’ll leave laughing. Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication | encoreatlanta.com 11
CANDIDE | April 12-13 | 8 p.m. & April 14 | 3 p.m.
Presented by the Georgia State University Opera Theater CANDIDE, based on Voltaire’s meandering, farcical epic of the same name, celebrates the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, its composer, this year. The novel is considered by most to be a spoof of certain religious doctrines that espoused blind optimism despite never-ending catastrophes. Its operatic namesake unfortunately stumbled through its own faulty way to completion. Bernstein himself (with as many as six or more contributors) tried frequently to edit the score and story, in order to improve its randomness, protect its susceptibility from hacks, and to put his own stamp of authenticity on it. GSU Opera Theater’s production is based on the 1989 version that Bernstein conducted at the Tanglewood Festival. The Maestro’s straightforward music is quintessential Bernstein from its saucy erratic time-signatures to its lyrical transparency, but the story is anything but straightforward or transparent. CANDIDE had too many lyricists to list, but it was the original brainchild of top-shelf American dramatist Lillian Hellman. The
story, an allegory about the wanderings of an optimistic young lad faced with overwhelming loss, is clearly extreme. Keep your eyes and your ears open; CANDIDE is a wild ride! Oh, and happy birthday Bernstein! Performances Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13 | 8 p.m. Sunday, April 14 | 3 p.m.

Etienne Charles & Georgia State University Jazz Band | Saturday, April 27 | 8 p.m.
Etienne Charles
with the Georgia State University Jazz Band Etienne Charles is an artist that defies easy categorization. He’s a trumpeter, bandleader, composer, arranger, recording artist, and professor. The New York Times declares him “an auteur.” Jazz Times hails him as “a daring improvisor who delivers with heart-wrenching lyricism.” While many nouns and adjectives may apply to him, Etienne Charles is—simply put—one of the most compelling and exciting jazz artists working today. Charles, accompanied by the Georgia State University Jazz Band, brings his dynamic, improvisation-fueled style to the Rialto Center to close out the season. Trinidad-born Charles mines his Afro-Caribbean background, African American cultural heritage, and their myriad related and entwined musical styles, everything from reggae and calypso to Motown, rock steady, and Haitian voodoo music. Charles, “one of the more ambitious soloists and composers” per The New York Times, incorporates these wide-ranging musical influences into his compositions and performances. In addition to his solo work, Charles has recorded or performed as a sideman with luminaries like Monty Alexander, Roberta Flack, Frank Foster, Ralph MacDonald, Johnny Mandel, Wynton Marsalis, and the Count Basie Orchestra. Charles is a 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship recipient, holds a Master’s degree from the Julliard School, and is an associate professor of jazz trumpet at Michigan State University. 14 Rialto Center for the Arts | rialto.gsu.edu | #RialtoATL
