Tomáš Kubínek — Miracle Man Certified Lunatic & Master of the Impossible
T
omáš Kubínek plays to packed houses worldwide with performances that defy categorization. He’s been called a comic genius, a virtuoso vaudevillian and an all-around charmer as well as a physical poet, verbal acrobat and needless risk-taker. Kubínek bills himself as a “Certified Lunatic,” “Master of the Impossible” and “Miracle Man.” He promises performances that are joyous, unpredictable and unforgettable.
8
His live performance style has been honed from a lifetime of performing. He was hooked at age 5, after his parents took him to the circus. By 9, he had done his first performance for a circle of elder magicians. By 13, he had an agent. Kubínek traveled the world and studied with some of the greatest teachers in theater. These disciplines, coupled with his tireless experimentation in the art of live performance, led to his award-winning stage shows.

On any given night, his show can feature strongman stunts, acrobatics, snake-healings, comedy, mass-hypnosis, music and magic. Regardless of where his madcap muse takes him, audiences follow, and usually leave dazed, beaming and in love with life. As one theater manager put it: Kubínek’s “artistry and his impact are nothing short of miraculous. … His audiences are better people when they leave the theater.”

Latin-Infused Modern Dance
allet Hispánico, led by artistic director Eduardo Vilaro, is recognized as the premier Latino dance company in the United States, bringing people and communities together to celebrate and explore Latino cultures. The troupe consists of 12 dancers, described by The Washington Post as “the most technically accomplished and musical dancers you’ll find in the contemporary scene.” Ballet Hispánico was founded in 1970 as a dance school and community-based performing arts troupe, and has grown into a renowned world-class institution. Its founder, National Medal of Arts recipient Tina Ramirez, started the organization to break down stereotypes and give voice to the Hispanic experience. In the past half century, Ballet Hispánico has become a role model in the Latino community and inspired creativity and social awareness in neighborhoods through its innovative performances, access to arts instruction and community engagement. In 2009, Vilaro, a former company member, succeeded Ramirez and became the company’s second artistic director. Through his choreography, performances are designed to capture and convey the spiritual, sensual and historical vitality of Latino cultures. Ballet Hispánico performs the works of Latino choreographers and is “dancing better than ever,” according to Backstage magazine. The company has entertained nearly 3 million people across 11 countries and three continents. 10 Rialto Center for the Arts | rialto.gsu.edu | #RialtoATL

F
Smoldering Gypsy Flamenco
arruquito — one name only — is considered a superstar in the flamenco world, credited with igniting world stages with “smoldering good looks … technical prowess, dramatic flair and a brilliant sense of invention” (The Boston Globe). Farruquito, the heir to the most renowned Gypsy flamenco dynasty, anchors his performances in improvisation and stays true to the distinctive tradition of the dance style founded by his grandfather, El Farruco, one of the greatest dancers in flamenco history. Farruquito (Juan Manuel Fernández Montoya) made his international stage debut on Broadway at age 4 alongside his grandfather. His began his career at 11 when he was featured with the world’s elite
dancers in legendary filmmaker Carlos Saura’s Flamenco. Throughout his career, Farruquito’s art has been guided by his mission: to preserve and share the purest form of flamenco on stages around the world. His work is praised by both critics and audiences. You’re in for an unforgettable evening with the dancer, described by The New York Times as “the greatest flamenco dancer of this new century.”

Joey Alexander Jazz Piano Prodigy
P
ianist Joey Alexander has the kind of generational talent that makes the jazz world take notice. He’s a prodigy with three studio albums, three Grammy Award nominations and dozens of celebrated performances on stages throughout the world. Alexander was born in Indonesia in 2003 and got his first big break when a YouTube video of his playing caught the attention of jazz legend Wynton Marsalis. In his capacity as artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Marsalis invited the 10-year-old Alexander to perform at the organization’s May 2014 gala. The New York Times called Alexander an “overnight sensation.” George Wein, the founder and director of the Newport Jazz Festival — the world’s oldest, most celebrated jazz festival — never had much interest in prodigies. Alexander was different. Wein said he didn’t want to make the same mistake he’d made when passing on a chance to see a 9-year-old Harry Connick Jr. perform. Listening to Alexander play, Wein said, “was an experience I have never encountered from a musician his age.” He cited the young pianist’s individual style and harmonic maturity. And yet, to see Alexander as just a child prodigy undersells him. He’s a sophisticated and vibrant interpreter as well as an accomplished composer and bandleader. He has recorded two Grammy-nominated studio albums and a critically acclaimed album that honors Thelonious Monk’s centennial. His latest release, Eclipse (2018), contains six original compositions. In recordings and onstage, Alexander works to thrill audiences and leave them marveling at the many artistic paths open to him in the years ahead. 14 Rialto Center for the Arts | rialto.gsu.edu | #RialtoATL

WELLSTAR & MAYO CLINIC
WORKING TOGETHER. WORKING FOR YOU. At WellStar Health System, we want every patient to receive the care they need right here in Georgia. As a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, our doctors have special access to Mayo Clinic knowledge, expertise and resources. And you get the peace of mind that comes with knowing we’re here for you.
ASK YOUR WELLSTAR PHYSICIAN ABOUT THE MAYO CLINIC CARE NETWORK. WellStar is the first health system in Georgia to become a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
