Tomáš Kubínek — Miracle Man Certified Lunatic & Master of the Impossible

omáš Kubínek plays to packed houses worldwide with performances that defy categorization. He’s been called a comic genius, a virtuoso vaudevillian and an all-around charmer as well as a physical poet, verbal acrobat and needless risk-taker. Kubínek bills himself as a “Certified Lunatic,” “Master of the Impossible” and “Miracle Man.” He promises performances that are joyous, unpredictable and unforgettable.

His live performance style has been honed from a lifetime of performing. He was hooked at age 5, after his parents took him to the circus. By 9, he had done his first performance for a circle of elder magicians. By 13, he had an agent. Kubínek traveled the world and studied with some of the greatest teachers in theater. These disciplines, coupled with his tireless experimentation in the art of live performance, led to his award-winning stage shows.

Latin-Infused Modern Dance

allet Hispánico, led by artistic director Eduardo Vilaro, is recognized as the premier Latino dance company in the United States, bringing people and communities together to celebrate and explore Latino cultures. The troupe consists of 12 dancers, described by The Washington Post as “the most technically accomplished and musical dancers you’ll find in the contemporary scene.” Ballet Hispánico was founded in 1970 as a dance school and community-based performing arts troupe, and has grown into a renowned world-class institution. Its founder, National Medal of Arts recipient Tina Ramirez, started the organization to break down stereotypes and give voice to the Hispanic experience. In the past half century, Ballet Hispánico has become a role model in the Latino community and inspired creativity and social awareness in neighborhoods through its innovative performances, access to arts instruction and community engagement. In 2009, Vilaro, a former company member, succeeded Ramirez and became the company’s second artistic director. Through his choreography, performances are designed to capture and convey the spiritual, sensual and historical vitality of Latino cultures. Ballet Hispánico performs the works of Latino choreographers and is “dancing better than ever,” according to Backstage magazine. Ephrat Asherie Dance, Kennesaw State University Dance Department and Terminus. It promises to be an unforgettable weekend of artistic expression.

Ilter Ibrahimof, Curator Ilter Ibrahimof has been executive director of Sunny Artist Management (SAM) since founding the agency in New York City in 2004. He was born and raised in Istanbul, studied at Emerson College and graduated in 2001 with a B.A. in theater studies with a dance focus. He moved to New York, working with World Arts Inc. (2001-04), before starting his own company and moving his agency to Canada, first in Montreal and, since 2015, in Toronto. Ilter has remained active as director as SAM evolved from a singular focus on artist representation to a multifaceted boutique dance agency. He and his agency represent and tour select international dance companies, and he has co-founded Joyce Theater Productions, a joint venture between SAM and New York’s Joyce Theater, to commission, produce and tour original work. Ilter has found himself taking on more curatorial roles, including artistic adviser for the Fall for Dance Festival at New York City Center in 2013 and 2014, and curator of Rialto’s biannual Off the EDGE festival in 2014 and 2016. Most recently, he co-founded and is artistic director of the Canadian edition of the Fall for Dance Festival (Fall for Dance North — FFDN) at the Sony Centre in Toronto.

Founded in 2017, Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre (TMBT) is the newest addition to Atlanta’s thriving contemporary dance scene. Terminus is both a recognition of Atlanta’s founding name and the intersection at which new beginnings are made. By bringing together the classical and contemporary strengths of each principal artist, the company has become celebrated for its creation of daring and theatrical dance works. For Off the EDGE, TMBT reveals its first new work of 2019, continuing to extend its dancers physical and artistic reach in a world premiere choreographed by Tara Lee.

Off the EDGE | 2019 Participating Companies BALLETX (PHILADELPHIA) BalletX, Philadelphia’s premier contemporary ballet, unites distinguished choreographers with a company of world-class dancers to forge new works of athleticism, emotion and grace. Founded in 2005 by Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan, and now under Cox’s direction as artistic and executive director, BalletX challenges the boundaries of classical ballet by encouraging formal experimentation while preserving rigorous technique. The company is committed to producing new works of the highest quality and integrity that bring the combined visions of choreographers and dancers to life and cultivate in audiences a collective appetite for bold, new dance.

EPHRAT ASHERIE DANCE (NEW YORK) Ephrat “Bounce” Asherie, a 2016 Bessie Award winner for Innovative Achievement in Dance, is artistic director of Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD), a company rooted in street and social dance. Dedicated to revealing the inherent complexities of these forms, EAD explores the expansive narrative qualities of such street and club styles as breaking, hip-hop and house to tell stories, develop innovative imagery and find new modes of expression. EAD’s first eveninglength work, A Single Ride, earned two Bessie nominations in 2013 for outstanding emerging choreographer and outstanding sound design by Marty Beller. The company has presented work at

the Apollo Theater, Dixon Place, FiraTàrrega, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, La MaMa, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s River to River Festival, New York Live Arts, SummerStage in Central Park and The Yard, among others.

KENNESAW STATE UNIVERSITY (KSU) DANCE COMPANY (ATLANTA) The KSU Dance Company is one of the few companies in the history of the American College Dance Festival to receive five national invitations to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. This distinction, along with eight regional gala selections, rank the KSU dance department as a leading dance program among peer institutions in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee. The mission of the Kennesaw State University Dance Company is to promote an interest in the art of dance within the company, the department, the student body and the community through performance, community and campus outreach programs, and promotion of the Department of Dance. ROSIE HERRERA DANCE THEATRE (MIAMI) Cuban-American dancer, choreographer and artistic director of Rosie Herrera Dance Theatre (RHDT), Rosie Herrera has more than a decade of experience in dance and cabaret. Since being discovered

in 2009 by Charles Reinhart, the Rosie Herrera Dance Theatre has become a fixture in Miami’s contemporary arts scene. RHDT is known for its diverse ensemble, consisting of some of Miami’s most brilliant performers and creators from theater, performance art, opera, drag and contemporary ballet. RHDT has done two American Dance Festival commissions, premiering them at the festival, and enjoys unprecedented success in Miami.

COMPANY WAYNE McGREGOR (LONDON) In 1992, Wayne McGregor founded Random Dance, which grew into Studio Wayne McGregor and encompasses his extensive creative output in fields beyond and in dialogue with dance. Studio Wayne McGregor fuels McGregor’s creative work and includes developing and touring signature works on his ensemble of world-class dancers. The ensemble was the instrument through which McGregor first found his distinctive visual style, revealing the movement possibilities of the body in ever more precise degrees of articulation. McGregor has made more than 30 works for the company and, today, it continues to be his laboratory for ambitious and experimental new choreography, for touring his work across the UK and around the world. Company Wayne McGregor is the resident company at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London.

TERMINUS MODERN BALLET THEATRE (ATLANTA) Founded in 2017, Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre (TMBT) is the newest addition to Atlanta’s thriving contemporary dance scene. TARA LEE (ATLANTA) A co-founder of Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre, Tara Lee is an American-born Chinese ballet dancer, choreographer and actress. She received her dance training from Donna Bonasera of Connecticut Dance Theatre and received a full scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet School. After dancing with Joffrey II in New York City, she met John McFall who invited her to join Atlanta Ballet. She was a principal artist with the company for 21 years. Tara also has been a member of Ballet British Columbia and a guest artist with New Orleans Ballet Theatre and Dominic Walsh Dance Theatre in Houston. Tara has taught company class for Atlanta Ballet and the pre-professional level of Atlanta Ballet Center for Dance

Education, as well as master classes for several schools and universities in Georgia including Emory and Brenau universities. As an actress, she has co-starred in such TV series as TNT’s “Good Behavior” and NBC’s “Game of Silence.”

BLAKE BECHAM THE LUCKY PENNY (ATLANTA) Blake Beckham is a choreographer, performing artist, educator and producer. She co-directs The Lucky Penny, a nonprofit organization that serves as a production outlet for Blake’s choreography and a platform for experimental performance projects. FLY ON A WALL (ATLANTA) Under the co-direction of Nicole Johnson, Nathan Griswold and Sean Nguyen-Hilton, Fly on a Wall is an idea house that presents and supports innovative performance. Its work thrives on artists of all backgrounds coming together to create art that lives at the junction of wit, risk and meaningful experiences. Fly on a Wall shifts audiences’ perspectives by creating an interface of artistic mediums that is guided by a strong theatrical sensibility and an extensive movement vocabulary. Since its inception in 2014, Fly on a Wall has created a body of work that includes

multimedia performance, installation and dance for film. It has offered community classes for dancers and nondancers alike, and has been recognized as Distinguished Fellows by the Fulton County Arts Council with a scholarship to the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences. Most recently, the company received a 2016 Idea Capital Grant and a residency at Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery.

IMMERSEATL (ATLANTA) Founded in 2017 by Sarah Hillmer, ImmerseATL serves as a bridge to the professional world of contemporary dance in Atlanta. Through mentorships, creation time and performance, selected artists are prepared to meet the demands, challenges and rewards of life as a professional artist. ImmerseATL educators are steeped in the professional world as creators and as directors of companies. The ImmerseATL platform exposes the artists to vibrant opportunities in the Southeast. Its piece frame shift is an expanded exploration with the 2018/19 ImmerseATL artists.
