Tip of the hat to your inaugural season! Looking forward to our partnership with The Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center at City Springs.

SANDY SPRINGS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

BEGIN THE JOURNEY … WELCOME to the inaugural season of the performing arts center at City Springs. We envisioned City Springs as a community gathering spot, the place where we meet old friends and make new ones. It’s where we weave a diverse community into a tapestry called Sandy Springs, and incorporating the arts is an important facet. Involvement in the arts, whether visual, theater or music, creates tiny threads that draw people in, sparks imagination and fosters a sense of community. After all, Sandy Springs has a long history of thinking creatively. It was creative thinking that first led to cityhood and now, 12 years later, to the opening of City Springs. Through art we can tell stories. We expect you’ll find our inaugural season rich with tales that intrigue, excite and entertain. This year — and into the future — we will deliver variety and diversity in an assortment of performances intended to entice you back again and again. William Shakespeare said that “the object of art is to give life shape.” A key goal of this facility is shaping the minds of our youth — our future artists — through arts education. Here, the arts will not only fire their imagination but build their academic skills, as well. Supporting those efforts, the Sandy Springs Foundation is raising funds to underwrite diversified arts and education programming that will expose them to world-renowned artists in an environment that nurtures learning while sharing arts experiences across the entire community. So, pick your shows, take your seat, and enjoy. Rusty Paul Mayor, Sandy Springs

BRANFORD MARSALIS QUARTET | 8 P.M. AUG. 11, 2018

D O N ’ T M E A N A T H I N G I F I T A I N ’ T G O T T H AT S W I N G NEA JAZZ MASTER, renowned Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and Tony Award nominee Branford Marsalis is one of the most revered instrumentalists of his time. He leads one of the finest jazz quartets today and is a frequent soloist with classical ensembles. Marsalis’ most current recording with his quartet is Four MFs Playin’ Tunes. The song takes center stage on this album, with band members bringing their considerable musical expertise to bear, as they focus on each tune as an important musical entity unto itself and not merely a vehicle for showcasing individual talent.

Charles Gans from the Associated Press said: “Saxophonist Marsalis leads one of the most cohesive, intense small jazz ensembles on the scene today. ... This album shows that Marsalis’ quartet hasn’t skipped a beat with the change in the drummer’s chair, effortlessly playing often complex original tunes that are thoroughly modern while referencing past jazz masters.” Clearly, the Branford Marsalis Quartet is one of the most innovative and forwardthinking jazz ensembles around today. JOE GRANSDEN & LANDAU EUGENE MURPHY | 8:30 P.M. AUG. 16, 2018

JOE GRANSDEN’S 16-piece big band is one of the busiest groups on the jazz scene. Since 2009, Joe and the guys have continued to build momentum and perform all around the country. The band’s 2011 release, It’s a Beautiful Thing, sold well and gets radio airplay all over the world.

Columbia Records debut album, That’s Life, with producer and Grammy winner Steve Tyrell. It spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz chart. Landau’s holiday CD, Christmas Made for Two, raised thousands for the Children’s Home Society of West Virginia and received national airplay.

The CD was recorded live at Cafe 290 in Atlanta, where the band holds a steady, twice-monthly gig. “The big band truly has its own sound and really swings!” says Gransden. “I attribute that to the arrangements that were all written by jazz trombone great Wes Funderburk. It’s such a pleasure to front a band of top musicians that can interpret Wes’ arrangements perfectly. These guys are the best.”

Landau’s self-titled third album was recorded at the famed Capitol Records studios in Hollywood, Calif., where Frank Sinatra recorded some of his signature classics.

LANDAU EUGENE MURPHY JR. is the soul- and Sinatra-singing Season 6 winner of the NBC reality show “America’s Got Talent.” The former car washer made his 8
