Elphaba
continues to
defy gravity Dee Roscioli returns to the Fox in Wicked By Kathy Janich
That’s one of the many circuitous mysteries that Wicked, the musical, attempts to solve as it guides us along a yellow brick road of good and evil, mayhem and magic, and ever-shifting allegiances. Like its musical forebears The Wiz and The Wizard of Oz, Wicked is the story of a bewitching land inhabited by Glinda, the Munchkins, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion, among others – with one notable exception. There’s no Dorothy here. Everything that happens in Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire’s inventive 1995 bestseller of the same name, occurred before a certain Kansas farm girl, her dog Toto and their house blew into Oz and its environs.

Fox Theatre production, has had no such trouble fitting in. In fact, she’s played Elphaba in more performances than any other actress. She just doesn’t know how many that is. “I really don’t want to know,” she says good-naturedly, during the show’s 10week sitdown in Washington, D.C. “I’d rather just keep plugging away. It’s been a long time.” She is the ninth of 11 women to date who have played Elphaba on Broadway, which she did after anchoring the Chicago production. A Pennsylvania native, she now splits her time between New York and the Windy City and has become a devoted fan of Chicago’s Bears and White Sox. Her portrayal of Elphaba is even highlighted in a Wikipedia page, which she finds funny and believes was created by a fan. Roscioli first became aware of her ability to perform when she was 8 or 9. “I was obsessed with Annie, and I was running around the house singing, well,

The musical, with a score by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell), is in its eighth year on Broadway and, with this visit, flying through the Fox Theatre for a third time. There are seven productions worldwide including the Broadway production, two North American tours, a London production, Japanese- and German-language productions, and one in Australia. A Dutch version is due in November. At its core, Wicked is a simple story of friendship, and of not necessarily judging a book by its cover. It’s also a Pandora’s box of what-is-its and whodunits. As Glinda asks early on: “Are people born wicked or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?” That is the tricky proposition on which the character of Elphaba is balanced. For her, a girl long shunned by her father and now mocked by new schoolmates, it’s not easy being green. Dee Roscioli, however, who wears Elphaba’s pointy black hat again in the

For those who wonder, neither the green paint nor the flying are particularly nasty or difficult for Roscioli. The paint is water-based and comes off easily, she says. And flying has come a long way from the oxygen-depleting harnesses of Peter Pan’s early days. Roscioli, who is new to taking a show from city to city, so far requires only two things to be happy on the road: a hotel room with good water pressure and a bathtub. Every performance ends with an Epsom salt bath so her muscles don’t seize up. Ah theater, the glamorous life! Wicked will haunt the Fox Theatre Sept. 14-Oct. 9. screaming, Annie. And my grandmother said, ‘You can really sing.’ And I said, ‘No, I can’t.’” By the time she was 12, she had joined a nonprofit studio for performers in her hometown of Easton, Penn. At 16, she saw Cats on Broadway, her firstever Broadway show. “I fell in love instantly,” she says. “I had already known I wanted to be an actor, and it sealed the deal. I loved New York. I used to walk behind the group I was with so I could pretend that I was a real New Yorker.” The first professional job she really wanted was the glamour cat Grizabella in —what else — Cats. She played the role in the national touring production that visited the Fox in 2002-2003. “I remember when they called and told me I got the job,” she says. “I said, ‘I’m the understudy?’ And they said, ‘No, we want you to do the role.’ I couldn’t really comprehend that.” She did five auditions on her way to becoming Elphaba, first as the standby in Chicago, then as the full-time witch there and on Broadway. To prepare for the auditions she was given a packet that included the songs “Defying Gravity,” “I’m Not That Girl” and “The Wizard and I,” and a couple of scenes. The lengthy process began with “Defying Gravity,” Roscioli says. “[This is] the hard part — the belty, upper register, key change section with the lyrics, ‘… so if you care to find me, look to the western sky ...’ “Then,” she says, with quiet triumph in her voice, “You go from there.”

etiquette 1. Please arrive early. latecomers may not be seated until intermission. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins. 3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting. 4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience. 40 EncoreAtlantA.com

Where do the stars eat in Atlanta? By Sherry Madigan White, Lauren Luegers and Kristi Casey Sanders
It doesn’t matter how rich and famous you get, you still need to eat. Encore Atlanta polled some local luminaries about their favorite local restaurants.

knowledgeable, and never rushes you and great food to boot! It is always a nice evening get-away [that] never disappoints. Tony Award winner Jennifer Holliday: My favorite restaurant is Kevin Rathbun Steak in Inman Park. I love everything about this restaurant — the seared Hudson Valley foie gras and the maple leaf farm duck trio are absolutely divine! The décor is a very unique and beautiful merging of the rustic and romantic [with] lighting with treechandeliers, which makes it a perfect place to take your “special someone.” This wonderful dining experience always leaves this dreamgirl happily singing “And I’m Telling You, I’m Not Going” until I’ve licked the spoon clean of my oh-so-delectable triple chocolate caramel mousse cake!
rathbun’s restaurant
Former Mayor Shirley Franklin: I have many favorites, but I always come back to Paschal’s for southern-style meals. I love the warmth of the staff, the good food, especially the potato salad and baked chicken, and remembering the history made by the owners and customers. “American Idol’s” Diana DiGarmo: I really love The Flying Biscuit, Six Feet Under and, of course, Chick-fil-a. Fox Theatre General Manager Allan Vella: [My wife and my] favorite “go-to” restaurant is Feast in Decatur. It has a welcoming atmosphere, a brick oven adjacent to the corner of the bar (which is ideal for cozying up to in the winter), a wonderful staff that is friendly,

Fitness guru Stepp Stewart: My favorite local restaurant is Nava at Peachtree Plaza. It has great upscale Mexican cuisine with personalized service. I love the blue cornbread and the virgin margarita (original flavor). Dining out should be an experience, and that is what you get when you eat at NAVA.
Star watch Locals know that Atlanta’s culinary scene is happening. Now that the city’s film, music and TV industries have exploded, celebrities from all over the world know it, too. The cast of American Pie was spotted at dining at Buckhead Diner, Pricci, Shout and Gordon Biersch while filming a reunion sequel. Jennifer Anniston was spotted at Ecco, Nava and El Taco. Chops may be the best place to stargaze. The steakhouse is where poet and novelist Toni Morrison celebrated her birthday, musicians Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez enjoyed a romantic meal, and Robert Duvall, Billy Bob Thornton, Kevin Bacon and comedian Ron White yucked it up. B98.5 radio host Vikki Locke: [My husband] and I just celebrated our anniversary in a very special way. Thanks to the Fox Theatre’s house manager Pat Prill, Mike surprised me with a wonderful dinner in a private room. Jeramiah Haines, sous chef at Livingston, cooked up something special and brought it across the street. He had pans a mile high! It was an incredible evening. 11Alive Sportscaster Fred Kalil: One of my favorite local places is McKendrick’s in Dunwoody. [My wife and I] don’t get out as much since our kids have gotten older. We find ourselves at baseball tournaments, football games etc. Pricci is a good one for us, and Haven in Brookhaven is a nice place we like.

92.9 Dave-FM radio host Mara Davis: My all-time favorite is Aria in Buckhead. Gerry Klaskala is one of the best chefs in the country. I love the simplicity of the menu and the contemporary interior. And do not leave this restaurant without dessert! Self-taught pastry chef Kathryn King is beyond [fabulous]. For barbecue, I just love Fox Brothers. The wings are over-the-top amazing. I dream about them. Everything else is great, too, I am just obsessed with the wings. For brunch, it’s definitely Rosebud. Chef Ron Eyester makes the greatest whole

wheat pancakes in the world. My favorite new(er) restaurant is Bocado. It may not be on the menu all the time, but ask Chef Todd Ginsburg if he’ll make you the pimento cheese/poblano pepper/bacon sandwich. It’s outrageously good. “American Idol’s” Michael Johns: My favorite restaurant is Roasters off Pharr Road. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Favorite steak is Hal’s [at the] corner of Roswell and Piedmont. Best burger [is from] The Vortex in little Five Points. Best Chinese is Grand China in Buckhead. Finally, best Thai food [is at] Little Bangkok, off Cheshire Bridge Road.

The Jewel of the South The Temple In 1922, a parcel of land along Peachtree Street between Kimball Street and Ponce de Leon Avenue was purchased by the Yaarab Shrine of Atlanta, a fraternal subset of the Masons, formerly known as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, and informally known as the Shriners. The group had outgrown their headquarters at Peachtree and Cain streets (now International Boulevard) and intended to build a Yaarab Temple Mosque where they could hold meetings, social gatherings, and fundraising events. To 56 EncoreAtlantA.com
offset costs, the mosque would also be able to host concerts, plays, and events for the citizens of Atlanta. The Shriners envisioned a facility with room for 7,500 people, several club and lounge rooms, a reading room and library, soundproof practice rooms, storage, a kitchen, office space, ballrooms, and more. Within a month of initiating a $1 million fundraising campaign in 1925, the Shriners had met their goal. The Shriners held an architectural competition in 1927 and the winning design came from local architectural firm

Marye, Alger & Vinour. Thirty-year-old Frenchman Ollivier Vinour became the mosque’s principal designer. Vinour drew inspiration from the Middle Eastern theme of Shriner rituals and symbolism, as well as his travels to Africa, and postcards and lithographs from Egypt, Sudan, Spain, and the Middle East. Vinour’s designs exceeded the Shriners’ wildest imagination, but it was expensive to realize. The cornerstone for the Yaarab Temple Mosque was laid on June 14, 1928. Six months later, the Shriners ran out of money. Afraid they wouldn’t have enough money to finish the mosque, the Shriners added a row of “temporary” storefronts to the Peachtree Street side and gave movie palace mogul William 58 EncoreAtlantA.com
Fox a 21-year lease they hoped would cover operating expenses. As part of their arrangement, they renamed the mosque the Fox Theatre and moved the main entrance to Peachtree Street, converting what was intended to be a ballroom into a 140-foot-long covered arcade.

This rendering of the Yaarab Temple was the winning design submitted by local architectural firm Marye, Alger & Vinour. The Architectural Library at Georgia Tech has two books of David Roberts’ lithographs, Egypt and Nubia and The Holy Land, which Vinour consulted for ideas.
William Fox’s Movie Palace William Fox intended Atlanta’s Fox Theatre to be the Southeastern jewel in a crown of theatres he operated from San Francisco to Brooklyn. When he signed the 21-year lease in 1928, he was on top of the world. Unfortunately, 1929 was a very difficult year. First, the Justice Department sued Fox for violating federal antitrust laws for his intent to merge the Fox and Loew’s theatre chains. Then, he was involved in a serious car accident. He recovered to find that the stock market crash had wiped out most of his financial holdings, dashing any hopes of expanding his film empire. Two months later, the Fox Theatre in Atlanta opened. The exterior was reminiscent of the skyline of a Moorish village with onion domes, ornate arches, and minarets. But what lay inside was even more magnificent. A writer from the Atlanta Journal called it a “holiday gift from the gods of entertainment to Atlanta and the Southeast,” and warned, “don’t go unprepared for the shock.” 60 EncoreAtlantA.com
Opening day celebrations were scheduled for December 25, 1929. Two shows were advertised: the first at 1:30 p.m. and the second at 8:30 p.m. Each show lasted for several hours and featured Iris Wilkins on organ, the Fox Grand Orchestra playing Sir Edward Elgar’s “This Shrine of Beauty,” Walt Disney’s cartoon Steamboat Willie, a singalong, Fanchon and Marco’s Sunkist Beauties (called “two carloads of feminine pulchritude” by the Atlanta Constitution), Fox Movietone News, and the film Salute, which starred George O’Brien, Helen Chandler, and Stepin Fetchit. “It makes no difference whether you have been in the Roxy or Paramount in New York or not,” wrote an Atlanta Journal reporter. “If you have seen a moon somewhere, that wouldn’t make you indifferent to your first glimpse of the sun ... For this Fox Theatre, in the simplest and least patriotic terms possible, is a bewildering spectacle of sheer opulent magnificence.” For more information, visit foxtheatre.org.

The crowd for the Fox Theatre’s grand opening celebration stretched around the block. On the bill of fare were a series of acts that were designed to offer pure escapist entertainment. At the end of each show, bleached cornflakes fell like “snowflakes” from the ceiling.
Fox fun facts:
wicked
As Wicked blows into Atlanta for the third time, here are some fun facts about the Broadway smash hit. Instead of foundation, Elphaba’s makeup is actually MAC’s Landscape Green eye shadow. It is water-based, so she does not have an allergic reaction. Wide makeup brushes are used to cover her face, neck, and hands while smaller brushes are used to fill in any gaps. In 1995, Gregory Macguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West was published. The musical adaptation opened at Broadway’s Gershwin Theatre on Oct. 30, 2003. At the 2004 Tony Awards, Wicked was nominated for 10 awards and took home three: Best Actress in a Musical (Idina Menzel), Best Scenic Design (Eugene Lee), and Best Costume Design (Susan Hilferty). In December 2004, the original Wicked Broadway cast recording was a top seller in the Broadway album category. That year, Wicked also ranked among iTunes’ Top 10 Soundtrack Albums. Top downloaded songs included 62 EncoreAtlantA.com
“Defying Gravity,” “Popular,” “For Good,” and “What Is This Feeling?” Composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 2005. Entertainment Weekly called Wicked the “Best Musical of the Decade.” The character of Elphaba ranked 79th on their list of the 100 Greatest Characters of the Past 20 Years.

Here’s what you need to know about buying the ring By Kristi Casey Sanders
S
The 4Cs: Color, cut, clarity and carat
The diamond itself will account for 85 percent to 90 percent of your expense, Knox says. Understanding the 4Cs of diamond quality will help you decide which elements you’re willing to compromise on in order to get the highest-quality stone you can afford. Share that information and your budget with your salesperson, and they’ll help you find the right diamond. “First pick the color,” Knox advises. “That’s where you’ll see a big difference in the pricing.” Diamond color ratings actually denote the absence of color. Grades D, E, F, G, H, I and L are colorless. Beyond L, the stones start to look yellow. 64 EncoreAtlantA.com
After choosing the color, look for a well-cut stone that’s symmetrical and not too bottom-heavy or shallowly cut. “If it’s not well cut, it won’t sparkle,” Knox says. A well-cut stone has several facets that meet evenly, with all the points lining up. If the diamond is bottom-heavy, it will be hard to set in jewelry, and the color may be concentrated near the point or edges. If the stone has a shallow cut, you can see what’s underneath the stone and you don’t want that. The best way to ensure you are getting what you pay for is to only buy stones that are GIA-certified, Knox says. “Next, you go to what’s internal — that’s clarity,” he says. Clarity gradings run from F-IF (flawless or internally flawless) to I1-I3 (inclusions). In the

electing an engagement ring is a nerve-racking experience. Purchasing diamonds at any time is a financial investment. But when it’s a gift for someone you want to spend the rest of your life with, making the “right” choice can be incredibly stressful. Bob Knox, designer and goldsmith at Knox Jewelers for the past 50 years, has a few words of advice on how to find the perfect ring.
middle, going from high quality to low are the ratings of VVS1-VVS2 (very very slight inclusions), VS1-VS2 (very slight inclusions) and SI1-SI2 (slight inclusions). “Men like to be flawless; women like a bigger stone,” Knox says, laughing. “There’s nothing wrong with a VS1VS2 or a good SI. It’s like if you put two Porsches together: They’re both perfect, except one has a slight tear underneath the driver’s seat.” The last of the 4Cs is carat — the size of the diamond. The largest diamonds you’ll find in the consumer market are 2-carat stones, but 1.5 carats can look just as impressive. The price per carat is lower for smaller stones because raw diamonds that are large enough to cut into 1 carat or larger shapes are hard to find. The most dramatic jumps in price and appearance come in .5 carat intervals. There’s not much difference between a 1 and 1.23-carat diamond, but there’s a very large difference when you compare them against a .75 or a 1.5-carat stone. And diamond prices are volatile, so be aware that the cost might fluctuate if you’re not looking and buying on the same day. Setting the stone
Once you’ve selected the diamond, you must still determine how to set it. Engagement rings range from simple bands with four to six prongs holding a solitary diamond to gem-encrusted bands and intricate pavé settings.
Knowing a bit about your sweetheart’s lifestyle can help you determine the best metal to use. Typical choices are white gold, yellow gold and platinum. But if your intended lifts weights, rock-climbs or wears rings on her right hand, avoid pavé or platinum ring bands. “Platinum is resistant to wear, but you’ll get dings and bends,” Knox says. Those scratches can be buffed out, but if she’s going to obsess about the wear and tear, it’s best go with an 18-karat white or plain gold setting instead. Titanium is another metal offered by some jewelers. It’s not a precious metal, so it’s affordable, and very durable. Like platinum, however,
it will show scratches, so it’s not the best choice for an active woman. And unlike other metals, it is almost impossible to resize if you get a band that’s ill-fitting. Something else to consider is how the engagement ring will be worn with the wedding ring. The prongs that surround the stone are called the head; where it sits is the shank. If the head sits low on the shank, close to the finger, she will have to purchase a wedding band that curves around the stone. If the head and shank are elevated, it will fit tightly against any kind of wedding ring. “Get her something plain and basic,” Knox recommends, “Then add to it.”

When in Kansas City...
10 things to see and do By Kristi Casey Sanders

Landing at Kansas City International Airport, you think you’re in Kansas —the airport’s shop boasts displays overflowing with Wicked and Wizard of Oz-themed merchandise. But you’re on the Missouri side of the split city. That’s just one of many surprises that await you. You’ll soon learn that people seem to live only on the Kansas side, and they’re crazy about fountains (the city has more than 200+). Here are 10 more things to discover in this town that’s a direct flight away. Kauffman Stadium (royals.com) has hosted more than 67 million fans since it opened in 1973. Known affectionately as “The K,” the ballpark underwent a $250 million renovation in 2009 that added a gigantic HD scoreboard (with its own crown, of course), outfield box seats and a party porch that’s surrounded the stadium’s famous fountains (see if you can tell what they’re shaped like). Kids might 68 EncoreAtlantA.com
enjoy visiting the Hall of Fame and meeting “KC,” a costumed performer in a 1880s baseball uniform, who talks about the team’s origins. There’s also a kids’ zone play area and batting cages. World-class wooden coaster
With more than 40 rides, including seven roller coasters, Worlds of Fun (worldsoffun.com) is legendary among coaster fans. Don’t believe us? Its wooden Prowler roller coaster was named “Best

Ask any local what to do and they’ll tell you to go to a shopping mall called Country Club Plaza (countryclubplaza. com). Don’t pooh-pooh the suggestion; it’s not just any mall. The Plaza opened in 1922 as America’s first suburban shopping district and the outdoor, openair complex is an integral part of the city’s social life. In addition to high-end retailers, the 15-block, 120-store plaza offers local shops and restaurants as well as an outdoor sculpture garden. On June 17, 1933, FBI agents got into a shootout at Union Station (unionstation. org) with Charles Arthur “Pretty Boy” Floyd, Vernon Miller and Adam Richetti over custody of thug Frank Nash. The Kansas City Massacre left its scars on the building’s marble facade. During its heyday in the 1940s, more than million passengers passed through Union Station every year. It’s still an Amtrak stop, but Union Station’s real attractions today are its shops, restaurants and entertainment

of downtown. There are more than 50 shops and entertainment venues here, but the focal point is the two-story KC Live complex, an open-air live music venue. Riverboat gamblers
Back in the day, casinos were only allowed in Kansas City if they floated on the Missouri River. Even though casinos now boast land-based hotels and amenities, the game rooms remain riverboats at the Ameristar Casino (ameristar.com), Argosy Casino Hotel & Spa (agosykansascity. com), Isle of Capri (kansas-city. isleofcapricasinos.com) and Harrah’s North Kansas City (harrahsnkc.com). Birth of bebop
Jazz may have been born in New Orleans, but it grew up in Kansas City. In the 1930s, Count Basie and native son Charlie Parker took bigband syncopations and added an improvisational layer that became known as bebop. The American Jazz Museum (americanjazzmuseum.com) celebrates the people and places that lit up the city’s historic 18th and Vine Jazz District from the 1920s to the 1940s.
