Between Us

Context is everything.

As I write this, I am a week into rehearsing the show you’re about to see. Which means I’m spending a bunch of glorious hours each and every day with singers, writers, actors, composers – people for whom the exquisite gift of some time on this earth required the amplification their own gifts might offer.

“I get to fall in love? In gratitude, here’s my love song.”

“I get to test myself in adversity? In gratitude, here’s my adventure story.”

“I get to walk this beautiful earth for some decades? In gratitude, here’s my vulnerability, offered in service of a reminder to pay attention.”

We went to another place for 18 months. A place of forced reflection on what we value, what we can live without, and what we need to not just survive, but to thrive. And while we still have a solid foot in the weirdness, we are starting to step back into life as we not so much knew it, but as we imagined it.

I have never been more grateful for the presence, company, and North-Star-providing of artists. They are showing us a way back. They are reminding us of both our better angels and our pitfalls. And as we open ourselves to a kind of unexpected do over, they are offering us a kind of GPS on the way to being fully human.

Oh golly, I am so grateful to be with you all.

COVID-19 Safety Precautions at the Alliance

The Alliance Theatre is excited to return to in-person performances on its Coca-Cola Stage and Hertz Stage for its 2021/22 Season. Safety for our patrons, artists, and staff is our top priority. The Alliance will continue to closely monitor local, state, and federal policies regarding indoor activities and plan our safety protocols accordingly. Effective immediately, all patrons will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative test taken, as well as a matching photo ID, to enter the performance space. Here are a few ways we’ve redesigned the experience with safety in mind:
