SANDY SPRINGS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
BEGIN THE JOURNEY … WELCOME to the inaugural season of the performing arts center at City Springs. We envisioned City Springs as a community gathering spot, the place where we meet old friends and make new ones. It’s where we weave a diverse community into a tapestry called Sandy Springs, and incorporating the arts is an important facet. Involvement in the arts, whether visual, theater or music, creates tiny threads that draw people in, sparks imagination and fosters a sense of community. After all, Sandy Springs has a long history of thinking creatively. It was creative thinking that first led to cityhood and now, 12 years later, to the opening of City Springs. Through art we can tell stories. We expect you’ll find our inaugural season rich with tales that intrigue, excite and entertain. This year — and into the future — we will deliver variety and diversity in an assortment of performances intended to entice you to come back again and again. William Shakespeare said that “the object of art is to give life shape.” A key goal of this facility is shaping the minds of our youth — our future artists — through arts education. Here, the arts will not only fire their imaginations but build their academic skills, as well. Supporting those efforts, the Sandy Springs Foundation is raising funds to underwrite diversified arts and education programming that will expose them to world-renowned artists in an environment that nurtures learning while sharing arts experiences across the entire community. So, pick your shows, take your seat and enjoy. Rusty Paul Mayor, Sandy Springs

TAJ MAHAL TRIO | 8 P.M. SEPT, 8, 2018
BLUES TR AV ELER, WORLD MUSICI A N AS THE HISTORY OF THE BLUES continues to be written, singer and multiinstrumentalist Taj Mahal does double duty as both a preservationist and a powerhouse pioneer of the American-born art form. The 10-time Grammy-nominated guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and composer, released his first album, Taj Mahal, in 1968, and his latest, TajMo, in 2017 with fellow bluesman Keb’ Mo’. The cross-generational collaboration (with Sheila E., Joe Walsh and Bonnie Raitt) won the 2018 Grammy Award for best contemporary blues album. Mahal, now 76, was born Henry St. Clair Fredericks in Harlem; his stage name came to him more than a decade later, in a dream about Mahatma Gandhi and social tolerance. He taught himself to play guitar in his teens, choosing music over farming despite studying agriculture at the University of Massachusetts.
Considered a scholar of the blues, Mahal regularly uses African roots music in his compositions, as well as elements of reggae, calypso, zydeco and gospel. In the nonfiction book The Rough Guide to Rock, authors Peter Buckley and Ben Browton describe Mahal as “one of the first major artists, if not the very first, to pursue the possibilities of world music.” Mahal’s 50-year career includes dozens of recordings and collaborations, stints with the Rolling Stones and screen time with Cicely Tyson in 1972’s Sounder (he also wrote the score). He also appeared in the movies Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991) and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002). Blues prodigy Jontavious Willis, 21, opens the show. Byers Theatre • $42-$62

CITY SPRINGS THEATRE COMPANY’S 42ND STREET | SEPT 14-23, 2018
COME AND MEET THOSE DANCING FEET CITY SPRINGS THEATRE COMPANY, Sandy Springs’ newest theater company, greets its public with the all-singing, alldancing extravaganza 42nd Street.
best choreography, and running almost nine years. A 2001 revival ran 3.5 years and won the Tony Award for best musical revival.
The musical is inspired by the 1933 Busby Berkeley movie of the same name. It tells the tale of producer Julian Marsh, who’s determined to get a splashy Broadway musical onstage despite the financial squeeze of the Great Depression. Peggy Sawyer, fresh off the bus from Allentown, Pa., catches his eye and eventually gets her big break.
The 30-member City Springs cast is led by Shuler Hensley, the Georgia-born Broadway actor who won a Tony Award in 2002 for the revival of Oklahoma!, in which he played the dark and misunderstood Jud Fry. If you’re familiar with Atlanta’s acting pool, you might also recognize such faces as Deb Bowman, Benjamin Davis (founder of the Atlanta Musical Theatre Festival), Fenner Eaddy, Marcie Millard and Googie Uterhardt.
The Harry Warren-Al Dubin score includes such classic tunes as “You’re Getting to Be a Habit With Me,” “We’re in the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” and the title song, among others.
42nd Street performances are at 8 p.m. Friday; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday; and 2 p.m. Sunday. Byers Theatre • $30-$62

VETERAN ENABLED CARE WITH JILL CHAMBERS | 3 P.M. SEPT 22, 2018
9/11 SURVIVOR TURNS INJURY I N T O A WAY TO HELP OTHERS
COL. JILL CHAMBERS was working in the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. At 9:45 that Tuesday morning, a hijacked American Airlines flight circled over downtown Washington, D.C., then crashed into the west side of the building. Some 125 military and civilian personnel were killed, along with all 64 people on the plane. Many of the estimated 26,000 Pentagon employees were injured, Chambers among them. In her lecture Veteran Enabled Care, she’ll talk about her career as a woman in the military, one that began when the working world was a much different place. She’ll also talk about how her injuries led her to create a nonpharmaceutical alternative program for people recovering from PTSD. Chambers spent the final eight years of a groundbreaking nearly 30-year military career at the Pentagon, reporting to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the 12
president’s highest-ranking military adviser. The 9/11 attack left her with post-traumatic stress disorder, and she retired as a disabled veteran. In 2007, she was asked to lead a study on challenges faced by wounded warriors, learning that an extraordinary number of active duty personnel, veterans and family members suffered silently and needlessly. Within a year of hearing her results, the Army created the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness program, the first holistic approach to wellness in the history of the military. Chambers, by then a civilian, went on to create This Able Vet, which gives veterans and military family members free tools to help them take charge of their health. Today, in her downtime, Chambers runs, plays basketball and softball, snow skis and water skis. “Anytime I can breathe fresh air,” she says, “that is great by me.” Studio Theatre • Tickets: $20

ROB SCHNEIDER | 8 P.M. SEPT. 28, 2018
WISECRACKING THE CODE WHEN ROB SCHNEIDER began to write sketch comedy for “Saturday Night Live” in 1988, he didn’t stick to the writers’ room, even after being nominated for Emmy awards in 1990, 1991 and 1992. Nope, the San Francisco-born Schneider moved briskly. He became a featured player, then a full cast member, adding to the seminal TV show’s roster of enduring characters. He contributed bits as Tiny Elvis and, most memorably, as photocopier-bound office worker Richard Laymer, who addressed co-workers with endless streams of annoying nicknames. Schneider’s “SNL” tomfoolery can be seen on the DVD “The Bad Boys of Saturday Night Live” (1998) with compatriots Chris Farley, Chris Rock and Adam Sandler. He’d go on to make several films with Sandler. 14
The comic’s feature film work includes quirky characters in the Sandler movies The Waterboy (1998) and 50 First Dates (2004) and starring roles in Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999), The Hot Chick (2002) and Grown Ups (2010). He spent two seasons on the NBC sitcom “Men Behaving Badly,” and in 2015 created “Real Rob” for Netflix. “Real Rob” details Sandler’s real-life life in Hollywood, with his wife, Patricia, and daughter Miranda. A third season is in the works. Schneider, now 54, returned to stand-up in 2009 and recorded the albums Registered Offender and Soy Sauce. The Holocaust. Digital Journal describes his comedy as “entertaining, witty and a great deal of fun.” Byers Theatre • $34

ROB BELL — THE HOLY SHIFT TOUR | 8 P.M. OCT. 13, 2018
H O LY S H I F T ! WHEN OPRAH WINFREY shines a spotlight on someone, as she did with pastor and New York Times best-selling author Rob Bell on her “SuperSoul Sunday” podcast and Oprah Winfrey Network Life Classes, people pay attention. Bell, author of three best-sellers — Love Wins, How to Be Here and What We Talk About When We Talk About God — is the founder of Mars Hill Bible Church in Grandville, Mich. He pastored the megachurch from 1999 until 2012 with Sunday gatherings that would draw up to 11,000 people. Called a “spiritual outlaw” by both fans and critics for his talks on tolerance and widespread acceptance, Bell explores a new understanding of the Christian faith. He writes, “I affirm the truth anywhere in any religious system, in any worldview. If it’s true, it belongs to God.”
In January 2007, the website TheChurchReport.com, put Bell at No. 10 on a list of “The 50 Most Influential Christians in America.” In 2011, he was listed on Time magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. His podcast, “The RobCast,” was named “Best of 2015” by iTunes. Opening the evening for The Holy Shift tour is Peter Rollins, a philosopher, storyteller and author (The Divine Magician: The Disappearance of Religion and the Discovery of Faith). CHASING PABLO: THE TRUE STORY OF PABLO ESCOBAR | 8 P.M. OCT. 16, 2018
ENDING A DRUG LORD’S REIGN OF TERROR PABLO ESCOBAR was born Dec. 1, 1949, in Rionegro, a city of about 101,000 in southern Colombia. By the time he was shot and killed in December 1993, the drug lord and narco-terrorist had become kingpin of the vicious Medellin Cartel. The cartel supplied about 80 percent of all cocaine smuggled into the United States at the time, netting Escobar some $29.1 billion a year. Steve Murphy and Javier Peña are the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration special agents tasked with taking Escobar down. They offer a firsthand history lesson as they discuss how they tracked Escobar, the hostile and life-threatening challenges they faced and the strategies they used to end Escobar’s reign of terror. If you’re a Netflix fan, you may know that the “Narcos” series (2015-17) chronicled 18
Escobar’s exploits and how he was thwarted. Murphy consulted on the series; he and Peña made cameo appearances on the final episode of Season 2. Murphy joined the DEA in 1987 and retired in 2013. He now heads a private law-enforcement consulting firm. He and his wife, Connie, adopted two Colombian girls as babies. They live in the Washington, D.C., area. Peña joined the DEA in 1984 and retired in 2014. “The search for Escobar was purely about revenge,” Peña has said. “It wasn’t going after dope, it wasn’t after money. It was just revenge because of all the cops he had killed along with all those innocent people.” Byers Theatre • Tickets: $20.50-$35

THE 5TH ANNUAL TOWER OF TALENT | 7:30 P.M. OCT. 20, 2018
KIDS HELPING KIDS MUSIC THERAPISTS at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta use creating, singing, playing and listening to music to strengthen cognitive, emotional and social abilities for young patients with diagnoses ranging from burns to emotional trauma. Tower of Talent is an energetic fundraiser benefiting the hospital’s music therapy program. It features metro Atlanta singers, dancers and performers, ages 6 to 21, who come together in concert. Singers and dancers audition, assisted by pros in the greater Atlanta area. Some were once patients themselves. The annual event, now in its fifth year, was created and is sponsored by Tower Beer, Wine and Spirits and Tower Lights CEO Michael Greenbaum and his wife, Anne. “My father taught me the importance of giving,” Greenbaum told the Atlanta Jewish
Times in 2016, “and this is something I want to pass on.” “Supporting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is especially near and dear to my heart because of my three young grandchildren,” Greenbaum said. “Even though they are happy and healthy, it has reminded me of the importance of good healthcare for children, who are the future.” To date, more than $1.5 million has been donated to Children’s Healthcare from Tower of Talent performances. SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR | 8 P.M. OCT. 21, 2018
R E L I V E T H E P I O N E E R D AY S O F H I P C O U N T R Y - R O C K FIFTY YEARS AGO, the Byrds gave the world an album titled Sweetheart of the Rodeo, now considered one of the most influential country-rock albums of all time, one that helped the genre achieve the status it has today. In 2003 — 35 summers after its release — no less than Rolling Stone magazine ranked Sweetheart at No. 117 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums ever. Byrds co-founders Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman perform the album in its entirety on this tour and share stories that take the audience “through the back pages” of how it came to be. They’re joined onstage by fivetime Grammy Award winner Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives. The concert includes every Sweetheart of the Rodeo song as well as songs that led the Byrds to the Nashville trip on which it was recorded. “No major band had gone so deep into the sound and feeling of classic country (without parody or condescension) as the Byrds did on 20
Sweetheart,” music journalist Mark Deming says, writing for the website AllMusic. “At a time when most rock fans viewed country as a musical ‘L’il Abner’ routine, the Byrds dared to declare that C&W could be hip, cool and heartfelt.” The album features tunes penned by Byrds’ keyboardist/songwriter Gram Parsons (who died of a morphine and tequila overdose in 1973), Merle Haggard, the Louvin Brothers, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. History sees the group as a band whose jangling guitars, angelic harmonies and restless eclecticism helped pioneer folkrock (“Mr. Tambourine Man”) and psychrock sounds as well as country-rock. Many musicologists consider the Byrds just as influential as the Beatles and Rolling Stones, although the band’s tenure was much shorter-lived. Byers Theatre • Tickets: $46-$95

AN EVENING OF ANGELIC VOICES THE PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC CHILDREN’S CHOIR is one of the most prestigious choirs in the Czech Republic. Their appearance is part of a 12-day U.S. concert tour celebrating the 100th anniversary of Czech independence. The young singers — age 12 to 18 — perform a selection of Czech and international classics, including works by Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884) and Arvo Pärt, who’s now 82. The choir’s greatest achievements to date include appearances at La Scala in Milan, New York’s Carnegie Hall and Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall. KIBBUTZ CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY | 8 P.M. NOV. 1, 2018
C O N TE M P O R A R Y D A N C E R O OTE D I N H O R R I F I C PA ST KIBBUTZ CONTEMPORARY DANCE, one of the leading dance companies in the world, is today identified with the work of artistic director Rami Be’er, whose vision has become the company’s trademark in Israel and around the world. KCDC, based in Western Galilee, appeared in Atlanta for the first time in October 2017 at the Dance Theater at Kennesaw State University’s Marietta campus. Western Galilee holds a special note for Sandy Springs; the communities became Sister Cities in 2015, focusing on with economic development and a sharing of cultural and educational opportunities. From 1973 to 1996, KCDC danced under the direction of Yehudit Arnon (1926-2013), an influential member of Israel’s dance community and a survivor of World War II and the Holocaust. Arnon watched her 22
mother die at Auschwitz; at Birkenau, her penalty for declining to perform at a Nazi Christmas party was a night spent barefoot in the snow. She swore that if she survived, she’d dedicate her life to dance. She did, establishing a dance center that grew into the Ga’aton Dance Company in 1959, and eventually KCDC. Be’er, nurtured by the dancers from age 3, joined the company in 1980 and has led it for the past 22 years. KCDC has performed works by such noted choreographers as Mats Ek, Jiří Kylián and Ohad Naharin. It typically performs non-narrative dances that inspired by social, political and historical themes. It has touched on the Holocaust, consumerism, the environment, contemporary military conflicts, relationships and the isolating effects of technology in the modern world. Byers Theatre • $35-$45

TAKE ME TO THE RIVER: NEW ORLEANS LIVE | 8 P.M. NOV. 3, 2018 ROCKIN’ AND ROLLIN’ THE EXPRESSION “laissez les bons temps rouler” is a Cajun saying often heard around New Orleans. It means, “Let the good times roll” and is an all-purpose celebratory exclamation for the city, its food, its music and its Mardi Gras debauchery. This version of the Take Me to the River tour (Memphis was celebrated in 2017) gathers some of the most influential figures in modern New Orleans funk, R&B, soul and jazz. It features individual performances and collaborations with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Ivan Neville, Ian Neville, George Porter Jr. and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, plus progressive Cajun masters the Los Bayou Ramblers, 2018 Grammy Award winners for best regional roots album.
Boudreaux played at the very first New Orleans Jazz Fest in 1970. Reportedly coming soon is Take Me to the River New Orleans, a film on New Orleans’ musical history and a follow-up to the 2014 Netflix documentary Take Me to the River Memphis. Both films are directed, produced and written by Martin Shore, a musician who’s toured with Bo Diddley, former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor and Albert Collins, among others. Byers Theatre • $42-$65
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, which dates to 1977, revolutionized the Big Easy’s brass band style by adding bebop and funk. The band has recorded with pop-rockers Elvis Costello, Widespread Panic and Modest Mouse. The Nevilles are long considered the first family of Crescent City music. Ivan Neville is the son of singer Aaron Neville; Ian is the youngest member of the music dynasty. R&B bassist George Porter Jr. helped found the Meters and is the grandfather of the modern funk sound. THE ASSAD FAMILY | 8 P.M. NOV. 4, 2018
M U S I C T H AT I S T R U LY I N T E R N AT I O N A L THE BRAZIL-BORN ASSAD FAMILY is built around guitarists Sérgio and Odair, who perform as the Assad Brothers and are known for playing original compositions, classical, jazz and music from throughout Latin America. They’ve played together since a young age and began their international careers in 1979, when they won a major prize at the Young Artists Competition in Bratislava, Slovakia. For an early Assad Family tour (in 2004), Sérgio and Odair arranged to feature three generations. They were joined onstage by their father, mandolinist Jorge Assad, and the voice of their mother, Angelina Assad. When the brothers perform under the “Assad Family” name, they’re most likely joined by sister Badi Assad, a singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist; Grammy Award-nominated singer, pianist and composer Clarice Assad, Sérgio’s daughter; and singer Carolina Assad, Odair’s daughter. Expect their Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center evening to emphasize Brazilian folk and pop music. The brothers themselves, noted for their artistry and ensemble playing, have set new standards of guitar innovation. They’ve studied with renowned guitarist and lutenist Monina Távora, who you may not know. She studied with Spanish guitarist 24
Andrés Segovia (1893-1987), who you probably do know. “International” is indeed one word that defines the Assad Family’s music and its journeys. They have worked with such artists as French-born American cellist Yo-Yo Ma; American violinist Nadja SalernoSonneberg; Argentinian tango violinist Fernando Suarez Paz; Cuban saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Paquito D’Rivera; Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer; and American soprano Dawn Upshaw, who dances between pop standards and classical music.
