SANDY SPRINGS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
JOIN OUR JOURNEY … WELCOME to the inaugural season of the performing arts center at City Springs. We envisioned City Springs as a community gathering spot, the place where we meet old friends and make new ones. It’s where we weave a diverse community into a tapestry called Sandy Springs, and incorporating the arts is an important facet. Involvement in the arts, whether visual, theatrical or musical, creates tiny threads that draw people in, spark imagination and foster a sense of community. After all, Sandy Springs has a long history of thinking creatively. It was that sort of thinking that first led to cityhood and now, 12 years later, to the opening of City Springs. Through art we can tell stories. We expect you’ll find our inaugural season rich with tales that intrigue, excite and entertain. This year — and in future years — we will deliver variety and diversity in performances intended to entice you to come back again and again. William Shakespeare said that “the object of art is to give life shape.” A key goal of this facility is shaping the minds of our young people — our future artists — through arts education. Here, the arts will not only fire their imaginations but build their academic skills, as well. To support those efforts, the Sandy Springs Foundation is raising funds to underwrite diversified arts and education programming that will expose them to worldrenowned artists in an environment that nurtures learning while sharing arts experiences with the entire community. So, pick your shows, take your seat and enjoy. Rusty Paul Mayor, Sandy Springs

ELF THE MUSICAL | DEC. 7-16, 2018
C I T Y S P R I N G S T H E AT R E TA K E S ELF O F F T H E S H E L F YOU MAY ASSOCIATE ELF most closely with the 2003 Will Ferrell movie, but it’s been a stage musical since 2010, with holiday runs on Broadway that year and in 2012, and three national tours afterward, including one that stopped at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. This holiday, City Springs Theatre Company brings New York City and the North Pole to town to tell the familiar, family-friendly, fishout-of-water tale about Buddy the Elf, who really isn’t an elf at all. As an orphaned young boy, Buddy crawled into Santa’s bag of gifts and found himself in the land of snow, toys and ho-ho-ho’s. The merriment deflates when Buddy grows into a full, man-size human and is done in by his poor toy-making skills. So, with Santa’s OK, Buddy begins searching for his father and his true identity. What he finds is less than ideal, but he’s determined to win over his new family and share the
good will that comes with Christmas. Georgia native Shuler Hensley, whose Broadway credits include a Tony Award for his work as Jud Fry in the 2002 revival of Oklahoma!, is Buddy. Autumn Hurlbert (an ensemble member and replacement Elle Woods in Broadway’s Legally Blonde) is Jovie, the tough-around-the-edges target of Buddy’s adoration. They’re joined by an ensemble of 15-plus. The score comes from Matthew Sklar (The Wedding Singer, the Alliance Theatre-born The Prom) and Chad Beguelin (Aladdin, The Prom, The Wedding Singer), the book from Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone). As Buddy himself might say, it’ll be “sparklejollytwinklejingley.” Byers Theatre • $30-$62

JEWEL’S HANDMADE HOLIDAY TOUR | 8 P.M. DEC. 19, 2018
THE SIMPLE GIFTS OF CHRISTMAS JEWEL, THE CONTEMPORARY COUNTRYFOLK ARTIST who made her first mark with 2005’s Pieces of You, returns to her family roots for her second Handmade Holiday Tour (so named because audience members can craft one-of-kind holiday gifts during the preshow). Go to citysprings.com for more details. Jewel, born Jewel Kilcher, comes from Homer, Alaska, where she began performing as a child. When her parents divorced, she stuck with Dad, singing with 10
him as he toured the country. She graduated from northern Michigan’s prestigious Interlochen Fine Arts Academy (the five-year high school where she first began writing songs) and moved to San Diego to be near her mother. Next, she ditched creature comforts, moving into her van and trying to get gigs wherever she could, largely playing coffee shops and eventually landing a regular spot at the Innerchange in Pacific Beach, Calif.
SANDY SPRINGS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER | CITYSPRINGS.COM
She’s recorded 15 albums since Pieces of You, including two with holiday music. The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter is joined on this tour by brothers Nikos and Atz Lee Kilcher and her 70-year-old musician dad, Atz Kilcher (all featured on the Discovery Channel’s wilderness reality show “Alaska: The Last Frontier,” which is centered around the Kilcher homestead).

BOSTON BRASS: CHRISTMAS BELLS ARE SWINGIN’ | 8 P.M. DEC. 22, 2018
H O R N S A - P L E N T Y B R A S S I T U P F O R H O L I D AY S BOSTON BRASS plays the Christmas tunes you grew up with — but swings them in its own inimitable way. For its holiday show, the five-member ensemble swells to a wall-of-musicproducing ensemble of about 15. Some of the best brass players in the world join the core group — trumpeters Jeff Conner and Jose Sibaja, horn player Chris Castellanos, trombonist Domingo Pagliuca and tuba player Sam Pilafian — for this seasonal reunion featuring big-band arrangements of holiday classics, comedy, audience singalongs and a few surprises. Ukulele, anyone? The rule of thumb here: Expect the unexpected. “There’s always something that’s a little bit different,” says pianist David Culter. “In fact, sometimes things that are quite a bit different. Everyone’s always trying to surprise everyone else, so it always feels fresh to the audience, and it always feels fresh on the stage.” 12
Much of the music comes from Boston Brass’ two holiday recordings — Christmas Bells Are Swingin’ (2005) and The Stan Kenton Christmas Carols (2006). Kenton (1911-1979) — beloved by many but loathed by purists — was a bandleader, musician, composer, arranger and pianist known for his swing, progressive jazz and West Coast jazz styles. You may hear Kenton versions of “Good King Wenceslas,” “The Holly and the Ivy,” “Motown Jingle Bells” and “What Child Is This” as well as a Nutcracker suite, “We Three Kings of Brubeck Are,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “Coventry Carol.” Boston Brass has been making music worldwide for more than 31 years. It’s philosophy, this time of year and always, is to give audiences a wide selection of musical styles in fresh arrangements, and to make it fun. Byers Theatre • $25-$35

ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATION | 8 P.M. DEC. 31, 2018
ASO, JOE GRANSDEN, FRANCINE REED RING IN 2019 THE GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING Atlanta Symphony Orchestra heads north and goes pops to welcome 2019 with conductor Stephen Mulligan, the great Francine Reed on vocals, and the popular Joe Gransden on trumpet and vocals. 14
Mulligan, a Peabody Institute and Yale man, has conducted orchestras all around the country as well as in Venezuela. He joined the ASO in August 2017 as assistant conductor and music director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. He’s

relocating from Phoenix in the mid1990s. Her singing career was a back-burner item as she raised her children in Arizona, although she managed occasional gigs at jazz clubs and social functions. Although she’s since moved out of Atlanta, she’s returns for this occasional gigs like this one. Reed has used her jazz-blues-R&B sound and engaging stage presence to open for such acts as Miles Davis, Etta James and Smokey Robinson. She met a relatively unknown artist named Lyle Lovett in 1985 and became integral to his show. As his star climbed, so did hers, with appearances on “Late Night With David Letterman,” “The Tonight Show” and “Regis and Kathie Lee.” Wild Hearted Woman, the most recent of her seven albums, came out in 2015.
led the ASO in concerts on the Atlanta BeltLine, for Halloween, in churches and at venues statewide. Reed, a Chicago native, has become one of Atlanta’s most treasured artists since
Gransden — Smokey Robinson calls him “world-class” — grew up in a family of musicians in New York City. He’s known for his for hard-bop trumpet approach — Clint Eastwood and Freddie Cole are fans — and a singing voice that’s recalls Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra. Gransden, with and without his 16-piece big band, has recorded 10 albums, including Go Getta in 2018. He says he knew as far back as high school that music would be his life’s work. SIMONE DINNERSTEIN & MATT HAIMOVITZ | 8 P.M. JAN. 29, 2019
BEETHOVEN, PHILIP GLASS, A CELLO AND PIANO
BEETHOVEN AND PHILIP GLASS. Two master composers. Two generations. At this concert, two artists pay tribute to each.
He called music a “higher revelation than philosophy” and “the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.”
Pianist Simone Dinnerstein and cellist Matt Haimovitz collaborate on a program that includes a Beethoven cello sonata, a Glass partita, and solo piano and cello pieces by each composer.
Glass, an American composer now in his 80s, is widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the late 20th century. He was an early proponent of minimalism but eventually succeeded in bridging the gap between classical and popular music. He’s written seven operas, nine symphonies, five string quartets, two violin concertos and two piano concertos. In December, Glass
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), a German composer and pianist, was a key figure in the music world’s move from the Classical era and into the Romantic one. 16

became a Kennedy Center honoree, an award given to performing artists for a lifetime of contributions to American culture. Dinnerstein, 46, is a Brooklyn-born, New York-based artist who studied at Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music. She first attracted attention in 2007 with her self-produced recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Classical Chart in its first week and was named to many Best of 2007 lists.
Haimovitz, 47, is based in the United States and Canada. He was born in Israel but grew up in America from age 5, and studied at Juilliard and Harvard. The New York Times described Haimovitz, who began playing professionally at age 13, as a “ferociously talented cellist who brings his megawatt sound and uncommon expressive gifts to a vast variety of styles.” Byers Theatre • $35-$45

BROADWAY’S NEXT HIT MUSICAL | 8 P.M. FEB. 1-2, 2019
ORIGINAL, UNSCRIPTED AND OH-SO FUNNY
BROADWAY’S NEXT HIT MUSICAL — and yes, that’s the title — describes itself as an unscripted theatrical awards show. Think of it as a mash-up of TV’s “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and the Tony awards. Every song is fresh, every scene is new, and every night is different. Improvisers ask theatergoers for made-up, “hit-song” suggestions (no real song titles, please) and, from there, create a spontaneous evening of music and laughs complete with characters, dialogue and plot twists. Four song titles make the initial cut and are performed. Audience members pick their favorite, and then the cast concocts a complete, off-the-cuff show. Broadway’s Next Hit Musical has been seen in New York at Don’t Tell Mama, the Triad, the Tribeca Film Festival and the New York Musical Theater Festival, among other spots around town and around the country. This tour takes them way off Broadway, to stops in Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Texas and Georgia. The 90-minute, family-friendly show is directed by longtime improv artists Rob Schiffman and Deb Rabbai. Schiffman 18
(co-artistic director, co-producer and performer) has toured for 17 years and is a two-time Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs Award winner as well as an improv teacher. Rabbai (co-artistic director, co-producer and performer) is Next Hit Musical’s cocreator and an original company member. She’s been an actor, improviser, singer, voiceover artist and improv teacher for 25 years. What they cook up, it seems, has fans clamoring for more. Even critics like it, with one calling the show “sharper than a pound of cheddar cheese.” Byers Theatre • Tickets: $25 - $45

CIRQUE ÉLOIZE: SALOON! | 8 P.M. FEB. 5, 2019
C I R C U S , T H E AT E R C O L L I D E I N W I L D W E S T THE MONTREAL-BORN contemporary circus company Cirque Éloize dates to 1993. Its production of Saloon! reaches even further back in time, to the Wild Wild West of the mid- to late 1800s — an era of lawmen, outlaws, cowboys, gunslingers, pioneers, and of course, saloons. This family-friendly show creates a mythical world in which theater and circus collide, a collision that features live music as well as strength, agility and original choreography. The score comprises original tunes and new takes on classic songs by Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash. Picture an America under construction. The West is booming. The railroad is being developed. In the middle of the desert, a town comes to life. A saloon opens, a place to gather and share tales. Enigmatic characters come together and reveal themselves. And the chase is on. As so many westerns do, Saloon’s story hinges on a girl — the beautiful Belle, who
sends her lover on an action-packed journey that’s accompanied by honky-tonk piano, smooth harmonies, banjo, drums, fiddle, comedy and surprises. The 11 dancer-athletes and musicians go high, go low and perform nonstop for 85 minutes. Cirque Éloize (its lineup includes the shows Cirkopolis, Hotel, iD, Nezia: The Pirate Child and Serge Fiori, Seul Ensemble) has given more than 5,500 performances in more than 550 cities and has been seen by more than 3.5 million people. That’s a lot of back flips, rope work, juggling and aerial silk work. The show, inspired by the rich historical and cultural heritage of the American frontier, premiered in Canada in 2016. It has toured Belgium, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey and the United States. Get ready to belly up to the bar and do-si-do. Byers Theatre • $40-$60

Patricia Terwilliger
Patricia Terwilliger has long had a love affair with the American West. In Spurs & Jalapenos, she focuses her lens on the men and women who have embraced cowboy traditions and amended them to suit their needs in the modern world. Given exclusive access to several prestigious working ranches, Pat has created a volume of story-telling photographs that reveal a culture undergoing fundamental change yet continuing to pay homage to the past. Individually, each picture captures a tale of today. Collectively, they provide a definitive record of the cowboy as this great icon moves through the 21st century.
“Pat Terwilliger’s latest book on the modern cowboy is visually striking to say the least. It is a beautiful book full of incredible photography of the modern cowboy and his world. It is a most have book for anyone who loves the West!”

SANDY SPRINGS FOUNDATION
INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS
The Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center provides an opportunity for all ages to learn about the fine arts and improve their skills. Workshops, summer camps and special events introduce younger residents to the visual and performing arts and heighten their appreciation, knowledge and understanding of the universal and timeless qualities that identify all great art. The Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center enhances the city’s economic value, enriching quality-of-life offerings vital for the overall health of a community. The City of Sandy Springs, along with City Springs Theatre Company, are teaming to introduce people of all backgrounds and generations to high-quality and diverse arts education programming. This initiative will provide access to the arts for underserved populations who may lack the 26
resources to attend events and will engage young people in the exploration of potential career opportunities. The diverse program offerings will serve students and educators Pre-K through college and engage the educational community through a student matinee series, hands-on training and summer programming. The community will also have opportunities to engage in the arts through family-oriented programming, summer arts camps and interactions with artists to understand the creative process. Funding for these arts education and community programming initiatives is provided through the Sandy Springs Arts Foundation. For more information about arts education programming, please contact David Daly with the performing arts center or Natalie Barrow DeLancey with the City Springs Theatre Company.
