SANDY SPRINGS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

JOIN OUR JOURNEY … WELCOME to the inaugural season of the performing arts center at City Springs. We envisioned City Springs as a community gathering spot, the place where we meet old friends and make new ones. It’s where we weave a diverse community into a tapestry called Sandy Springs, and incorporating the arts is an important facet. Involvement in the arts, whether visual, theatrical or musical, creates tiny threads that draw people in, spark imagination and foster a sense of community. After all, Sandy Springs has a long history of thinking creatively. It was that sort of thinking that first led to cityhood and now, 12 years later, to the opening of City Springs. Through art we can tell stories. We expect you’ll find our inaugural season rich with tales that intrigue, excite and entertain. This year — and in future years — we will deliver variety and diversity in performances intended to entice you to come back again and again. William Shakespeare said that “the object of art is to give life shape.” A key goal of this facility is shaping the minds of our young people — our future artists — through arts education. Here, the arts will not only fire their imaginations but build their academic skills, as well. To support those efforts, the Sandy Springs Arts Foundation is raising funds to underwrite diversified arts and education programming that will expose them to worldrenowned artists in an environment that nurtures learning while sharing arts experiences with the entire community. So, pick your shows, take your seat and enjoy. Rusty Paul Mayor, Sandy Springs

SOUTH PACIFIC | MARCH 8-17

A RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN CLASSIC DON’T MISS THIS 10-TIME TONY AWARD-WINNING MUSICALTHEATRE MASTERPIECE! Love transcends the harsh realities of war and prejudice in this sweeping tale centered around two unlikely love affairs. Set on a tropical island during World War II, this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic features some of the most beautiful music ever composed woven into an inspiring story cherished the world over. South Pacific premiered on Broadway in 1949 and was an immediate hit, running for 1,925 performances. It was, at the time, the second-longest running show after Oklahoma! — another Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. South Pacific, which would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize as well, is based on James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book Tales of the South Pacific. Rodgers and Hammerstein, inspired by the stories in Michener’s book, set out to write a musical that would be both financially successful and send a strong progressive message on racism. When South Pacific opened in New York, tickets were essentially unobtainable and scalping was rampant. As virtually all 12

American lives had been impacted by World War II, any audience member could resonate with the show and sought to do so. People across the nation were so interested in being part of the social and cultural phenomenon of South Pacific that souvenir shops in New York printed fake tickets for travelers to take home and display for guests, even if they had not been able to actually see the show. The original cast album of South Pacific, originally priced at $4.85, sold more than a million copies after first being released. The beloved score includes the songs “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” and “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame.” With these songs, performed amidst big, Broadwaylevel choreography and a rousing chorus of American sailors and Navy nurses, City Springs Theatre Company is ready to take you to Bali Ha’i in South Pacific. Directed and Choreographed by Tony Award Recipient Baayork Lee / Music by Richard Rodgers and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II / Book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan

NATIONAL GEO LIVE: EXPLORING MARS WITH NASA ENGINEER KOBIE BOYKINS | MARCH 14 | 8 P.M.

BOUNDLESS ‘CURIOSITY’ NASA MECHANICAL ENGINEER KOBIE BOYKINS IS INTIMATELY INVOLVED WITH THE PLANET MARS. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the secondsmallest planet in the Solar System after Mercury. Named for the Roman god of war, Mars is often referred to as the “Red Planet” because the reddish iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance which is visible to the naked eye. Surface features on Mars are likened to the impact craters of the Moon and the valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps of Earth. Launched from Cape Canaveral on November 26, 2011, Curiosity is a car-sized rover designed to explore the crater Gale on Mars. The rover was launched on November 26, 2011 and landed on Aeolis Palus inside Gale on August 6, 2012 — over 14

eight months later! The rover was created as part of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission — a robotic space probe designed to explore beyond Earth’s orbit. As supervisor of the mobility and remote sensing teams for the rover Curiosity, Boykins has monitored headline-making studies, including proof of the former presence of water on Mars indicating that the red planet could have supported life. Join Boykins, winner of a NASA Exceptional Service Medal, as he shares his boundless enthusiasm for unraveling the mysteries of outer space and recounts the latest exciting chapter of Mars exploration. ATLANTA BALLET AT CITY SPRINGS | APRIL 12-13

AT L A N TA B A L L E T L E A P S I N T O B Y E R S T H E AT R E ATLANTA BALLET is excited to take part in the inaugural season of performances at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center at City Springs. The program will include one of dance visionary Jiří Kylián’s signature celebrations of dancers’ physical limits, Return to a Strange Land. Sinewy forms entwine in intimate embraces before spiraling across the stage in graceful lifts. The dancers’ physical bodies in space detached from place and time — travelers in a strange land. They move as counterpoints, exploring the limits of centrifugal force and, seemingly, gravity. The world-renowned choreographer has received many prestigious, international awards and honors. Kylián’s masterpieces are frequently performed by numerous dance companies and schools around the world. 18

Rising Brazilian choreographer Ricardo Amarante, recognized for his emotionallycharged, purely neoclassical style, complements the program with The Premiere, an original work commissioned by Atlanta Ballet for the 2018|2019 Season. Amarante began his training in Brazil before completing his studies at the National Ballet School Cuba and English National Ballet School. He went on to begin his career working with the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet and the Jeune Ballet de France. The Premiere was Amarante’s first creation in the United States. Atlanta Ballet will also present a divertissement of short works, including excerpts from ballet classics from previous seasons. Byers Theatre • $18-$83

L A U G H I N G AT L O V E THE SECOND CITY has been laughing at love and its infinite scroll of side effects for decades. In It’s Not You, It’s Me, the worldfamous comedy company’s latest laughterinducing undertaking, The Second City takes shots at heartbreak, missed connections, and the mire of human relationships. The Second City’s original Chicago club opened its doors in December of 1959. Rooted in the groundbreaking improvisational games of Viola Spolin, and co-founded by Bernie Sahlins, Howard Alk, and Spolin’s son Paul Sills, the small cabaret theater grew to become the most influential and prolific comedy empire in the world. The Second City developed an entirely unique way of creating art and fostering generation after generation of superstars 22

from Martin Short, Gilda Radner, Eugene Levy in the 1970s, to Keegan-Michael Key, Cecily Strong, and Aidy Bryant today. In 1987, Stephen Colbert took a job at Second City answering phones in the box office and selling t-shirts in exchange for free classes. Another box office employee, Nia Vardalos, would go on to star in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The film was based on the real-life wedding of Vardalos to fellow Second City alum Ian Gomez, and became the highestgrossing independent film of all time. Today, in addition to classes, professional development programs, and performing for schools and workplaces, The Second City, produces countless original shows in its theaters in Chicago, Toronto, and Hollywood and performs eight touring shows in the U.S. and Canada including It’s Not You, It’s Me. NAT GEODINNERSTEIN SIMONE LIVE PRESENTS & MATT PINK BOOTS HAIMOVITZ AND A| MAY MACHETE 23 | 8 |P.M. MAY 6 | 8 P.M.

BEETHOVEN, PHILIP GLASS, A CELLO AND PIANO

BEETHOVEN AND PHILIP GLASS. Two master composers. Two generations. At this concert, two artists pay tribute to each.

Classical era and into the Romantic one. He called music a “higher revelation than philosophy” and “the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.”

Pianist Simone Dinnerstein and cellist Matt Haimovitz collaborate on a program that includes a Beethoven cello sonata, a Glass partita, and solo piano and cello pieces by each composer.

Glass, an American composer now in his 80s, is widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the late 20th century. He was an early proponent of minimalism but eventually succeeded in bridging the gap between classical and popular music. He’s written seven operas, nine symphonies, five string quartets, two violin concertos and two piano concertos.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), a German composer and pianist, was a key figure in the music world’s move from the 24

SANDY SPRINGS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER | CITYSPRINGS.COM

In December, Glass became a Kennedy Center honoree, an award given to performing artists for a lifetime of contributions to American culture. Dinnerstein, 46, is a Brooklyn-born, New York-based artist who studied at Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music. She first attracted attention in 2007 with her self-produced recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Classical Chart in its first week and was named to many Best of 2007 lists.

Haimovitz, 47, is based in the United States and Canada. He was born in Israel but grew up in America from age 5, and studied at Juilliard and Harvard. The New York Times described Haimovitz, who began playing professionally at age 13, as a “ferociously talented cellist who brings his megawatt sound and uncommon expressive gifts to a vast variety of styles.”
