Welcome to Winter Journey, the opening Discoveries performance of the Atlanta Opera’s 2015-16 season. The music you are going to hear was written by Franz Schubert in 1827. It’s the perfect foundation for this production. Tonight, we explore how we listen to classic music in the visual age of the iPhone. Our premise is that what you experience is just as important as what you hear. Schubert’s music conveys feelings and emotions that everyone can relate to. But David Adam Moore and Vita Tzykun of GLMMR have worked with us to create a vibrant, exciting multimedia concept that invites you into the performer’s world, mind, and emotions. Our Discoveries series is dedicated to our audience members who are seeking new works, new ideas, and fresh perspectives. We think this new way of experiencing music does more than offer a fresh perspective. It shifts a paradigm. We look forward to hearing what you think. Thank you for being here. Enjoy the performance.

synopsis

Gute nacht (Good niGht)

“A stranger I arrived; a stranger I depart.” In May he won the love of a girl and hoped to marry her. But now the world is dreary, and he must leave, in winter, in the dead of night, finding his own way in the trackless snow. “Love loves to wander — from one person to the next.” He writes “Good Night” on her gate to show he thought of her.

die Wetterfahne (the Weather vane)

The weathervane on her house creaks in the shifting winds, mocking him and showing the inconstant hearts inside. “What do they care about my suffering? Their child is a wealthy bride!”

Gefrorne tränen (frozen tears)

He notices he has been crying and chides his tears for being cool enough to freeze. They do come out of his heart hot enough to melt all the winter’s ice!

erstarrunG (frozen stiff)

He looks in vain for her footprints beneath the snow where they walked through the green meadow and wants to melt away the snow and ice with his tears. He has nothing to remember her by except his pain. She is frozen in his heart; if it thaws, her image will flow away.

der Lindenbaum (the Linden tree)

The tree, a reminder of happier days, seems to call him, promising rest. But he turns away, into the cold wind. And now, miles away, he still hears it calling him: “Here you would find peace.”

WasserfLut (fLood)

The cold snow thirstily sucks up his tears; when the warm winds blow, the snow and ice will melt, and the brook will carry them through the town to where his sweetheart lives.

auf dem fLusse (on the stream)

The gaily rushing stream lies silent under a hard crust. In the ice he carves a memorial to their love. The river is an image of his heart swelling up powerfully beneath the frozen surface. 12

synopsis rückbLick (backWard GLance)

He recounts his headlong flight from the town and recalls his springtime arrival in the “city of inconstancy,” and two girlish eyes that captivated him. When he thinks of that time, he would like to go back and stand silently in front of her house.

irrLicht (WiLL o’ the Wisp)

The false light of the will-o’-the-wisp has led him astray, but he’s used to it. Every path leads to the same goal. Our joys and sorrows are but a trick of the light. Every stream reaches the sea, every sorrow its grave.

rast (rest)

Only now that he has stopped to rest does he realize how tired and sore he is. And in the quiet he feels for the first time the “worm” that stings him inwardly.

frühLinGstraum (dreams of sprinG)

He dreams of springtime and love but wakes to cold and darkness and the shrieking of ravens. He sees frost leaves painted on the window. When will they turn green? When will he again embrace his beloved?

einsamkeit (LoneLiness)

He wanders, like a sad and lonely cloud, through the bright and happy life around him. “Even when the storms were raging. I was not so miserable.”

die post (the post)

He hears a post horn. “Why does my heart leap up so? There’s no letter for you! But maybe there’s some news of her?”

der Greise kopf (the Gray head/the oLd man’s head)

Frost has turned his hair gray and he rejoices at being an old man, but when it thaws, he is horrified to be a youth again: “How far it is still to the grave.”

die krähe (the croW)

A crow has been following him. It has never left him, expecting to take his body as its prey. “It won’t be much longer now. Crow, show me constancy unto death!”

Letzte hoffnunG (Last hope)

He gambles on a leaf quivering in the wind. If it falls from the tree, all his hopes are dashed. He falls to the ground himself and weeps over the “grave” of his hopes.

im dorfe (in the viLLaGe)

Dogs bark, and all the people are asleep, dreaming of success and failure, finding on their pillows what eluded them in life. “I am done with all dreaming. Why should I linger among the sleepers?”

der stürmische morGen (the stormy morninG) The storm is an image of his heart, wild and cold like the winter. 14

synopsis täuschunG (deception/deLusion)

A dancing light wants to lead him astray, and he is glad to go along. “Behind ice and night and horror” it shows him a warm, bright house and a loving wife within. Illusion is all he has.

der WeGWeiser (the siGnpost)

“Why do I take secret ways and avoid the other travelers? I’ve committed no crime. What foolish desire drives me to seek the wastelands?” He journeys endlessly, seeking peace and finding none. A signpost points the way: “I must travel a road where no one has ever yet returned.”

das Wirtshaus (the inn)

He comes to a graveyard and wants to enter. But all the rooms in this “inn” are taken; he resolves to go on his way with his faithful walking stick.

mut! (couraGe)

He shakes the snow from his face and sings cheerfully to silence his heart’s stirrings, striding into the world, against wind and weather: “If there’s no God on Earth, then we ourselves are gods!”

die nebensonnen (the mock suns)

He sees three suns staring at him in the sky. “You are not my suns! Once I too had three, but the best two have now set. If only the third would follow, I’ll be happier in the darkness.”

der Leiermann (the hurdy-Gurdy man)

Behind the village stands a hurdy-gurdy man, cranking his instrument with frozen fingers. His begging bowl is always empty; no one listens to his music, and the dogs growl at him. But his playing never stops. “Strange old man. Shall I come with you? Will you play your hurdy-gurdy to accompany my songs?” — Source Gopera.com photo: Denny Wells

Q & a: Production designer, Vita tzykun Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in Odessa (former USSR) which is now Ukraine. A year before the USSR fell apart, my family immigrated to Israel, where I finished school and got a B.F.A. in Design for Theater at Tel Aviv University. Then I moved to the U.S. to complete my M.F.A. in costume design for stage, and production design for film. It’s been a fascinating journey to live in three countries that are so extremely different. I constantly draw from those experiences in my design work. 22

Who is your favorite artist? There are so many amazing artists in so many different disciplines. ... I think it would be quite impossible for me to single one out. A theater and film designer needs to be very well-rounded in order to be able to design for different stories that take place in different time periods. Depending on the project, I often find myself drawing inspiration from a wide range of artists: Medieval composers, pre-Raphaelite painters, modern installation artists like Matthew Barney and Ryoji Ikeda, electronic musicians like BjĂśrk, The Knife, Grimes, DADA poets, symbolists, Russian constructivists, writers like Dostoyevsky,

behind the curtain Kurt Vonnegut, and Haruki Murakami, and the list goes on ... You and your partner, David Adam Moore, founded GLMMR, an art collective in New York City. What is the ethos of GLMMR (Giving Light Motion + Memory + Relevance), and how is this conveyed in your work? Our ethos is a wholistic approach to visual and dramatic storytelling. I am a set and costume designer for stage and film, while David is an opera singer, composer, photographer, and video artist. The contributing members of GLMMR are also multidisciplinary artists, which allows us to work in a fully integrated way through a variety of media. Our body of work includes design for opera and dance, concert visuals, film, commercial design, and gallery installations. During a production, what is a typical day for you? My day never really consists of working on one production, as I (and designers in general) typically work on multiple projects that are in different phases at any given moment. A typical work day for me ranges from 10-16 hours. For example, today I spent the morning scouting locations for a film I’ll be working on in NYC. This afternoon, I was in meetings for a danc e piece that will premiere in Germany, for which I will design costumes. Do you prefer creating period costumes or doing more conceptual work? The style of the design is always derived from the story. I prefer to design for interesting stories and work with inspiring collaborators.

The first question should always be: “What do you want to say with this show?” How you are going to say it is the next step. When one looks at your costume designs up close, it is clear that you have incredible attention to detail. Is this an important quality to have in costume design? Attention to detail is extremely important, as there is simply no excuse for generic design in any discipline. God is in the details. What was the most interesting or challenging costume you created? What made it so? Costumes for the production of Falstaff that Tomer and I did at Wolf Trap Opera were probably among the most challenging because I fused Elizabethan and Victorian costume styles together to create a whimsical world that draws from both the time period in which the opera was written and the time period in which the story was set. What are your favorite moments in this production of Winter Journey (Winterreise)? GLMMR’s Winterreise started as a video accompaniment to David’s recital performances and evolved into a fully immersive presentation in which the performer functions within a landscape of video imagery. We are particularly excited about Atlanta’s production, because we have designed a new set and created new video material that includes locations ranging from Times Square to the Utah Salt Flats. One of our favorite moments in the show is the final song, “Der Leiermann” (The Hurdy-Gurdy Man), which is considered to be one of the greatest art 23

Behind The CurTain songs ever written. In GLMMR’s version, David encounters a much older version of himself playing a hurdy-gurdy in the middle of the desert. At first glance, this might seem like a bizarre plot twist, but taking a deeper look into the text of the song, it becomes clear that The HurdyGurdy Man is the protagonist’s vision of himself — a happier, more resilient man who continues to “play his song” no matter how dire his circumstances may appear. What’s coming up next at GLMMR? We have just finished a new production of Michael Nyman’s The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat based on the book by Oliver Sacks, at Indianapolis Opera, which was one of the largest-scale productions of the work ever mounted.

photo: Denny Wells

24

We directed the show in addition to designing the sets, costumes, and video. After Winterreise at Atlanta Opera, we will work as the design team with director Tomer Zvulun for Atlanta Opera’s new production of Soldier Songs — a work that is close to our hearts, as David premiered and recorded the title role. Maxwell Bowman will be joining us as the lighting designer and video engineer for all of these productions. This winter, we will also be presenting Winterreise at Des Moines Metro Opera and at a cutting-edge new music venue in NYC called National Sawdust. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Reina Powell and Jayme Alilaw performing in last year’s Atlanta Opera Studio Tour production of The Marriage of Figaro. photo: Wade Thomas

OPERA IN YOUR COMMUNITY The Atlanta Opera is committed to introducing and educating audiences about opera through our community and education programming. We provide many opportunities for both opera experts and novices to explore and experience opera through interactive performances and creative tours. For a taste of the excitement and beauty of what is in store for the upcoming season, we offer our free season preview concert, Opera With an Edge on Sept. 27. Hosted by Bob Edge (aficionado and Opera supporter) and Atlanta Opera General & Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun, this concert will feature the most beloved musical moments from this season’s operas on the La bohème set at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Our ever popular Pre-Opera Talks, a free event held one hour before every performance, will allow audience members a more intimate look at the composer and opera being performed that evening. This November, we will offer post-performance panel 26

discussions following our Discoveries series performances of Soldier Songs. These panels aim to open community conversations about war and art, and the personal nature of each. This January, we return to the William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum as participants in The Molly Blank Jewish Concert Series, a musical celebration of Jewish contributions to music featuring leading performers from around the world. In 2016, our fun and popular 24-Hour Opera Project will throw composers, librettists, stage directors, and opera singers together with 24 hours to compose, stage, rehearse, and perform a 10-minute opera in front of a live audience (admission is free). Our education programming for students of all ages kicks off with The Atlanta Opera Student Short Matinee performance of Puccini’s La bohème, on Oct. 5 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. This performance is a one-hour reduction of the opera performed with full set and costumes by the cast, chorus, and orchestra of the mainstage show. Last season, the student short presentation of Madama Butterfly captivated a sold-out house of 2,500 middle

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT and high school students. The Atlanta Opera Studio Tour, our long-running inschool attraction, will present an abridged version of the beloved Gilbert and Sullivan operetta The Pirates of Penzance. The Studio Tour performs for thousands of students in metro Atlanta and the state of Georgia every year in the winter and spring. In June, we continue our partnership with Emory University in presenting The High School Opera Institute, a one-week intensive study program designed for rising 10th-12th grade singers. The purpose of this program is to prepare aspiring music majors for the rigorous college application, audition, and selection process. Our insightful master classes offer the one-on-one learning experience of a private lesson in a classroom or public setting. Our new OPERAbility program can be customized for a classroom

of any age level to discuss the concept, history, and production of opera. It also includes a performance element by the teaching artist. Our educational programs are accompanied with study guides designed to promote cross-curriculum connections while fulfilling Georgia Performance Standards. The Atlanta Opera continues to be a vital presence in the Atlanta arts community by bringing the power and passion of opera to thousands of students and audience members across the metro Atlanta area every year. Our community and education partners are instrumental in our success and we are grateful for their support. We encourage you to learn more about our community and education programs by visiting us at atlantaopera.org.
