“Tell me about your high school prom.” It’s like an emotional Rorschach, the answer you get to that question. As a firm believer that all too much of who we are as grown folks got baked into us in adolescence, I have always found people’s prom stories to be among the most illuminating ones I’ve heard. • Didn’t go. Next question. • OMG, best night of my life! • I pray to everything holy that no pictures remain of that evening. Think about it. You instantly know something about the person from the answer. Welcome to the story of Emma’s prom. Which is, in its way, the story of all of our proms — all of our rites of passage and dreams of belonging, as filtered through the prism of all the “thou shalts” and “thou shalt nots” that live on well past our teens. Even with the big hair and the bad tuxes, I simply can’t think of a more primal and evocative moment than that verge-of-adulthood ritual of wanting to dance with someone you love. The Alliance is getting to dance with a pretty spectacular creative team on this show. A trio of writer/ composers that have redefined Broadway, a company of actors who really are the stars we look to (wait for it — it’s a beautiful song about to come your way) and, at the helm, a truly astonishing director and choreographer with whom we are good and smitten — Casey Nicholaw, who last brought us his heartbreakingly beautiful production of Tuck Everlasting. It’s enough to make me dig out a certain spaghetti-strapped number from the back of my closet. Well, almost. (Someday, ask me about my prom. And then tell me about yours.)

Beth Leavel, who’s done 11 Broadway shows and may see her 12th with the Broadway-bound The Prom, has been known to refer to coffee as “character in a cup.”
Leavel DAME
This leading lady can ‘take a show to surprising places,’ says her director for The Prom, Casey Nicholaw. By K athy Janich 10 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
Still, Leavel wavered on a career choice. She studied social work at tiny Meredith College in her hometown of Raleigh, doing every theater-related thing she could get her hands on there. Then she went to grad school, getting an M.F.A. at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. “I swam in that pool for two years,” she says, “and I realized, ‘I have to try this, I just have to.’” New York terrified her (her word), but she took the leap. Her first apartment, in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen, was so hellish she wouldn’t let her parents inside. But, she says, she was lucky. She did a single catering gig, was a tour guide “for a hot minute” and waitressed for two weeks (“It was fancy. I didn’t do it very well.”) before getting her first professional job, in summer stock, as the standby for Lucie Arnaz in a tour of the musical I Do! I Do! Then came the first national tour of 42nd Street and, in the 1980s, her Broadway debut in 42nd Street, as Anytime Annie. There would be no more nettlesome day jobs. Leavel has done 11 Broadway shows so far, worked in regional theaters from Oklahoma to Massachusetts and, not long ago, made her cabaret debut to sellout crowds at Manhattan’s 54 Below. You might remember her as Ma Tuck in the Alliance’s Tuck Everlasting in early 2015. “The second that Beth walks onstage, you gravitate toward her,” Nicholaw says of the actor he calls “Dame Leavel.” “She has enormous range, as a singer and as a comedienne. She inspires directors and writers so much, now they talk about ‘the Beth Leavel part.’ She can take a show to surprising places.” The Tony Award in 2006 changed both her life and career. “It’s really hard to put into words how accepted I felt after that,” she says, reflecting still on comments from colleagues who said her win represented a win for all working actors who’d been delivering for years with little notoriety.

he’s played Dolly Levi, M’Lynn in Steel Magnolias and, most famously, the Drowsy Chaperone in the 2006 Broadway musical The Drowsy Chaperone, winning a Tony Award and warbling such lyricsto-live-by as “Keep your eyeball on the highball in your hand.” Now Beth Leavel has temporarily encamped in Atlanta to take part in the Alliance Theatre’s world premiere musical The Prom. The premise: An aging group of out-of-work actors fixates on a cause, invading a small Indiana town on behalf of a lesbian student whose high school cancels its prom because she plans to bring her girlfriend. Sounds serious, no? Well it is, and it isn’t. Neither is Leavel. Or such partners in crime as director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw and book co-author Bob Martin (cohorts from her Drowsy days). “My favorite thing to do,” Nicholaw says, “is to do a show where people are loving the music, loving the dancing, laughing their butts off and suddenly they’re like, ‘How did I get this tear in my eye?’” Enter Leavel, who plays Dee Dee Allen, a character she calls her “alter ego and evil twin.” Dee Dee, she says, is “an amazingly successful Broadway mega-star whose career is suffering just a bit. She’s had three flops in a row and needs a cause célèbre. She’s narcissistic. … It’s so much fun to play.” The North Carolinaborn, New York-based Leavel discovered theater in the fifth grade, playing “some western something in the elementary school play.” She remembers getting a laugh and says, “It imprinted on me.” When, as a high school senior, she was cast in the musical Brigadoon, she recalls wanting “to know how I could always stay in that oxygen.” Quite an epiphany for a girl who auditioned because her best friend said it was a great way to meet boys.
“This community of my pals makes me want to raise my bar even higher because I don’t want to let them down.” — BETH LEAVEL

What do you do with a Tony? Historically, Tony awards have had places of honor in their winners’ homes, been used as bathroom adornments or doorstops, or sometimes tucked away somewhere, perhaps in a box or out of sight. Beth Leavel keeps her Tony, the famous silver medallion she earned for the musical The Drowsy Chaperone in 2006, on a shelf in her Manhattan apartment. But it does take field trips. She took it backstage with her at Mamma Mia!, her most recent turn on Broadway. “I let it out of the house,” she says. “I let it breathe.” 12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
“It’s a very, very, very special club, which feels really good,” Leavel says. Whenever she’s introduced as a Tony Award winner, she thinks, “‘Oh, my gosh, that’s me,’ and I enjoy it every time.” And, happily, work continues to come her way. Sometimes through an audition, sometimes not. “People assume that after the Tony Award I’d never have to audition again,” she says. “Oh, nay-nay. If I don’t know the director it behooves us to be in the room together. That way, I feel that I have earned it.” With The Prom team, especially Nicholaw, Martin and Chad Beguelin (lyrics, book), she has a sort of shorthand. “This community of my pals makes me want to raise my bar even higher because I don’t want
to let them down.” That was true on the first day of The Prom rehearsals, when the company trouped through three opening numbers to find the best one, and on a hot Tuesday in July, when Leavel spent the morning doing hip-hop. The show, she says, “leads with a wonderful heart.” Dee Dee has a fantastic song, an Evita moment, in Act 1, she adds, and an “amazing” ballad in Act 2. Although Leavel’s list of dream roles includes Mama Rose in Gypsy (to improve upon her grad school interpretation) and Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, she puts Dee Dee Allen in their company. Mostly, she says, “I want the next Drowsy Chaperone, where you get to do something original and put your DNA all over the role.” A

discover us. discover you. discover us. discover you. Looking for a (quoting The Prom) “safe, nonviolent, high-profile, low-risk injustice?” In The Prom, I discovered how easy it is to interfere in others’ lives and to do so from selfish motives. But we also learn that if we keep our hearts open to change, good things can happen, even “lives can be changed!” Even our own lives can be changed by or through our stumbling efforts. Our highprofile injustices today tend to be unsafe, high risk and violent. Can we, shall we, be upstanding and stand against injustice in all of its forms? Let’s do so! about the alliance theatre The Alliance Theatre is Atlanta’s national theater, expanding hearts and minds on stage and off. Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. The Alliance delivers powerful programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance Theatre received the Regional Theatre Tony Award® in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education, and community engagement. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 100 original productions including Tony Award® winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice, and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. The Alliance has developed and premiered important American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring, and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act: The Musical, Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away, Bring It On: The Musical, Stephen King and John Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the world premiere of the new musical Tuck Everlasting, and most recently, Born for This: the BeBe Winans Story. The Alliance also creates and nurtures the careers of artists through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing the world premiere for the competition winner as part of the regular season, and the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, providing developmental support and production resources for three performing arts projects each year. The Alliance’s dedication to providing access to the arts is reflected in its commitment to creating new work for all ages, and to bringing that work into classrooms and communities across Atlanta and throughout the region. More than 50,000 students each year experience age-specific professional performances and participate in acting classes, drama camps, and in-school initiatives through the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department. The Alliance’s groundbreaking Kathy and Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young performances offer professionally-produced, fully interactive theater for infants and toddlers; the Palefsky Collision Project invites high school artists to create and perform new civic-minded theater based on a classic text; and community acting classes and skill-building workshops engage professional artists, young actors, business leaders, and curious learners of all ages. Twice recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for leadership in arts education, the Alliance Arts for Learning Institute equips classroom teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum and have been empirically proven to improve student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. The work produced by the Alliance allows locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. The vision of the Alliance Theatre is to be a beacon of leadership for the national field, while remaining deeply rooted in and reflective of our local Atlanta community. MISSION Atlanta’s national theater, expanding hearts and minds on stage and off. VISION The Alliance will lead the national field by deeply engaging with its local community, modeling radical inclusion and catalytic experiences on our stages, in our classrooms, and throughout Atlanta. alliancetheatre.org or 404.733.4650

Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The three committees are the Theatre Advocates, the Theatre Educators, and the Theatre Ushers. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Michael Winn at Michael.Winn@ alliancetheatre.org.
