HIGHES T R ATING BA SED ON PERSONAL E XPERIENCES OF PATIENTS

Recently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services implemented a new ratings system to help consumers quickly and easily compare hospitals. That system is based on the results of a patient-experience survey referred to as HCAHPS, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems. Fewer than 10% of hospitals in the country received five stars, the highest rating possible, including Cancer Treatment Centers of America® in metro Atlanta.* In the surveys, 98% of our patients said they would definitely recommend our hospital to others—and 94% rated their overall experience a nine or ten on a 10-point scale. With results like that, it’s easy to see why so many of our patients travel here for treatment. To learn more about five-star care at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in metro Atlanta, visit cancercenter.com/atlanta.

cancercenter.com/atlanta 888.845.2471 * HCAHPS results can be found at www.cms.gov and were based on the published summary ratings provided by CMS for a data collection period of 10/1/2013 to 9/30/2014.

between us

Mike Lew makes me laugh. It started when I read what was then a finalist for our Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, Bike America. You know how some people ugly cry? I sometimes ugly laugh. It’s a cross between the sound of a seal and a dog. And that play did it for me. Bike America ended up having its world premiere with us in 2013, and by the time it had opened, all of us at the Alliance were good and smitten with Mike Lew. So when he sent me his new play — Tiger Style! — I was hopeful. And yes, there was that awful barking sound again. And yes, there were lines that made me leave my office and go into colleagues’ offices and say “Stop what you’re doing and listen to this.” But there was something else, too. There was a kind of vulnerability— a posing of that enormous question of where we fit in. And because that question was posed through a story that had a whole bunch of open doors and windows for lots of different people to walk through — something we look for when choosing plays for our theatre —we asked Mike if we could premiere it on the Alliance Stage. Look around for a second. This is a big room and a really big stage. And it’s a really big thing for a writer to create a story that might just fill that stage and might just speak to a lot of people who come from a lot of places. And I happen to think Mike’s done it. Unfortunately, he’s also continued to write those lines that make me make those sounds — so if I’m in the audience tonight, I apologize in advance. But Mike Lew makes me laugh.

Playwright Mike Lew’s sneaky style wraps intelligent ideas inside boisterous humor By Kathy Janich

THE LEW FAMILY

Y

ou can tell a lot about Mike Lew from the instructions in his plays. The first page of Tiger Style!, for example, includes this note: “No Chinese accents. Not ever. Also, cast Asian actors to play Asian characters. Great.” If that makes you laugh and/or think, he’s got you. Lew, 33, is the playwright behind Bike America, which won the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition in 2013. It follows a lost twentysomething woman attempting to find herself on a cross-country bike trip. If you saw it on the Hertz Stage, you know the helmeted bicyclists delivered most of their lines while jogging behind handlebars and a front wheel. Who thinks of such things? Mike Lew does, and he’s back. With Tiger Style!, a dark comedy about two young AsianAmericans who wonder what they might owe their immigrant heritage, Lew becomes the first Kendeda winner to see his work on the Alliance’s mainstage. The size of the opportunity isn’t lost on him. “The Kendeda competition is a radical thing for this industry,” he says. “By producing writers just out of grad school — something that pretty much NEVER happens anywhere else — and by saying, “Yes, your play is ready, and it’s ready now,” Susan Booth and Celise Kalke have been quietly doing more for the American theatre than any of us can possibly appreciate, and I think we’ll be seeing the ripple effects for years to come. “Beyond the competition itself, they’ve kept supporting the writers they find through this program. Doing Tiger Style! on the Alliance’s mainstage is virtually unheard of for a world premiere play by a relatively unknown writer, and it’s freeing me up to dream bigger and push my limits as a storyteller.” Returning with Lew for Tiger Style! is his friend and frequent collaborator Moritz von Stuelpnagel, who made his Alliance

‘ It’s like you just threw our family onstage and barely had to write anything.’ Playwright Mike Lew’s father, below, after seeing a reading of “Tiger Style!” in L.A.

ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG 13

Question: Where did Tiger Style! come from? Answer: Tiger Style!has been a long time in coming. It’s a play about “Asian tiger parenting,” a phenomenon that drew a lot of popular attention upon the release of Amy Chua’s Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother (2013) but wasn’t really news to me because I’ve been living with it my whole life. The reason I say the play’s been a long time in coming actually has nothing to do with any kind of traumatic childhood experiences on my part; it has to do with the way artists of color are treated in this industry. I think there’s a tendency for some theatres and teachers to sort of anthropologize people of color. Early in my career I felt 14 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

— and major regional theatre debut — directing Bike America and, more recently, was nominated for a 2015 Tony Award for directing Hand to God, an irreverent puppet comedy about a possessed Christian-ministry puppet. In both Tiger Style! and Bike America, says von Stuelpnagel, “what’s captivating is the rebellious spirit of Mike’s protagonists and their refusal to be labeled as victims. They become so bold, that they often overcompensate in clumsy ways, and that’s where the comedy comes in.” “Mike believes that intelligent ideas don’t require pretense to be heard, but rather that the theatre should be a stimulating, enjoyable place to be, even as you’re challenged or provoked, says von Stuelpnagel, 36. “He creates an event that entertains. His work is unapologetically boisterous, but his delightfully mischievous humor frequently breaks through to something profound.” Lew, who still lives in Brooklyn with his playwright wife, Rehana Lew Mirza, put his rebellious protagonists aside for a bit to answer a few questions.

this burden of expectation placed upon me that I was to serve up my cultural identity and speak from a place of authority about a country from which I’m three generations detached. I didn’t have it in me to write a play about China or Chinese immigration, and so I spent a lot of time writing about virtually anything else. But what I do have it in me to write is a social satire that looks at Asian tiger parenting in addition to generational acculturation, American race relations, cultural hybridity, unconscious bias in the workplace and a bevy of other concerns. Q: What do Tiger Style! and Bike America have in common? How are they different? A: I think both plays have an outward comedic sensibility that shields a deeper rumination on where we are as a country. But Tiger Style! is probably more directly personal. My dad saw a reading in L.A. and was like, “You didn’t have to work hard on this one. It’s like you just threw our family onstage and barely had to write anything.” Q: How have you changed as a writer since Bike America? A: I think my gaze has moved beyond just the pages of my own plays to encompass what’s happening in this industry as a whole. I’m obsessed with the inner workings of theatre, and have grown to realize that the way we choose plays for a season, or run our theatres, or champion other artists, or structure new-play development has enormous downstream consequences for this art form. So in addition to always trying to learn more about my craft as a playwright, I’m also trying to be an advocate and an activist out in the world. Q: What’s next? A: I’m working on three other projects right now, in various stages of gestation. My next play is an adaptation of Richard III set in high school, called Teenage Dick (vaguely from Richard III). The play attempts to look at disability today via the most famous disabled character of all time. My wife, Rehana, and I are also working on a new musical called Bhangin’ It, about the high-stakes world of intercollegiate bhangra (Indian folk dance) competitions. After we finish that, Rehana and I are co-writing a centuries-spanning trilogy of plays that explore the ripple effects of British colonialism in India and the U.S. today. Q: Finish this sentence: Mike Lew writes plays about … A: Big-scope problems crammed into small people’s bodies.

about the alliance theatre The Alliance Theatre is Atlanta’s national theater, expanding hearts and minds on stage and off. Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. The Alliance delivers powerful programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance Theatre received the Regional Theatre Tony Award ® in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education, and community engagement. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 95 original productions including Tony Award® winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice, and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. The Alliance has developed and premiered important American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring, and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act: The Musical, Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away, Bring It On: The Musical, Stephen King and John Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, Harmony – A New Musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, and most recently the world premiere of the new musical Tuck Everlasting. The Alliance also creates and nurtures the careers of artists through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing the world premiere for the competition winner as part of the regular season, and the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, providing developmental support and production resources for three performing arts projects each year. The Alliance’s dedication to providing access to the arts is reflected in its commitment to creating new work for all ages, and to bringing that work into classrooms and communities across Atlanta and throughout the region. More than 50,000 students each year experience age-specific professional performances and participate in acting classes, drama camps, and in-school initiatives through the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department. The Alliance’s groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young performances offer professionally-produced, fully interactive theater for infants and toddlers; the Palefsky Collision Project invites high school artists to create and perform new civicminded theater based on a classic text; and community acting classes and skill-building workshops engage professional artists, young actors, business leaders, and curious learners of all ages. Twice recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for leadership in arts education, the Alliance Arts for Learning Institute equips classroom teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum and have been empirically proven to improve student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. The work produced by the Alliance allows locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. The vision of the Alliance Theatre is to be a beacon of leadership for the national field, while remaining deeply rooted in and reflective of our local Atlanta community. alliancetheatre.org or 404.733.4650

discover us. discover you. discover us. discover you. I would rate this play an “A,” which to my parents would mean failure because it wasn’t an “A+.” In all seriousness though, in Tiger Style! I discovered that being an Asian-American born in the United States and raised by immigrant parents puts me in the crossroads of two very distinct cultures that I’ve had to learn to balance and yet don’t necessarily belong in either one. Like Albert and Jennifer in the play, I grew up in a home that valued hard work and grades over almost anything else — but all in the name of love and family. And just as the brother and sister duo experience, my sister and I learned that the hard work ethic pays off pretty well while going to school, but it takes a lot more to achieve success, and more importantly happiness, in adulthood. It has been a long process for me to learn to deal with the real world and failure — and while I never went to such extremes as the siblings in Tiger Style!, it definitely took a lot of different experiences to help get me to where I am today. I still have a long way to go, but watching this play is a step in getting there. Andrew Chang Alliance Theatre Advisory Board Member

synopsis: Star students Albert and Jennifer Chen used to represent the pinnacle of academic and musical achievement. But now they suck at adult life. Albert’s just been passed up for promotion and, although she’s a high-powered oncologist, Jennifer’s been dumped by her loser boyfriend. So they do what any reasonable egghead brother and sister would do and go on an Asian Freedom Tour! On the way they find what about themselves is and isn’t distinctly American. From Irvine, Calif., to Shenzhen, China, Tiger Style! examines the successes and failures of “tiger parenting” from the hilarious and slightly sarcastic point of view of a playwright who’s actually been through it.

Connect and share with us. Who do you thank or blame for where you are in life?
