Dear Broadway Patrons,

We are delighted to welcome you back to the beautiful Ohio Theatre for the opening of the 24/25 PNC Broadway in Columbus season! This season we are celebrating PNC’s 10th year as title sponsor of the Broadway series. We continue to be grateful for their partnership and support of the arts in central Ohio.

Art plays many roles in our society. One of the most important roles is to bring people together for shared experiences. You may not know the person sitting next to you, yet you can collectively laugh, cry, or be challenged by what you see and hear on the stage in front of you. At a time when it seems there is more focus on our differences than our similarities, the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) is dedicated to highlighting the shared humanity that unites us all.

Our venues are at the heart of what we do, but CAPA’s programming and impact goes well beyond our buildings. In CAPA spaces, for nearly 55 years, we are telling stories, making connections, and creating unforgettable arts experiences that bring together people from all backgrounds through living, breathing art.

On behalf of everyone at CAPA, we thank you for being here. Every audience member plays an essential part in our ability to bring the very best of Broadway to Columbus. We look forward to continuing to work together to build community through the arts, and we are so grateful for your patronage.

See you when the curtain rises.

WHY MJ THE MUSICAL THRILLS ON STAGE

Audiences have been jumping to their feet in exuberance for MJ ever since it opened on Broadway in January 2022, and now theatergoers across the country are experiencing the thrilling production for themselves. Whether you’re perfecting your moonwalk or listen to playlists of his smash hits every time you go on a road trip, MJ is for everyone who can’t stop singing “mamasay-mama-sa-mama-coosa” at the grocery store. (And who hasn’t?) Here are three reasons MJ is the thriller we all need right now.

SMOOTH CRIMINAL

It’s no secret that Jackson was known for his moves—only matched by his iconic vocals. With dance legends like Bob Fosse, Fred Astaire and the Nicholas Brothers as Jackson’s inspiration, MJ

the Musical’s director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon had a tall order to fill. Already a Tony winner for choreographing An American in Paris, Wheeldon sought out Rich and Tone Talauega, two dancers on Jackson’s HIStory World Tour, to join the creative team for authenticity. From the explosive opening number to ovation-worthy ending and a lot of eye-popping moves in between, it’s obvious why the show took home the Tony Award for Best Choreography.

DON’T STOP ’TIL YOU GET ENOUGH

Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage weaves over 35 of Jackson’s biggest hits into the musical, showcasing his talents from The Jackson 5 to 1991’s Dangerous, his eighth studio album. The musical is full of mash-ups, reprises and jaw-dropping surprises and, perhaps surprisingly, it also offers insight into his background. The show offers Jackson’s memories of his tumultuous childhood through a series of interviews, which allows audiences to see the King of Pop’s life from 1965 to 1992. The parameters of the storytelling bring depth to the beloved music catalog.

MAN IN THE MIRROR

Instead of a wide-ranging biographical musical, MJ takes a unique stance with its narrative. Framed as a documentary team chronicling the creation of Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour in 1992. “We didn’t want to create the typical jukebox musical,” Nottage told The New York Times. “One of the things that I reject is when you try to do these cradle-to-grave stories —I don’t think they’re that interesting. So we’re focusing on just one period of his life that’s really representative of his life as a whole—we opted to look at the early ’90s, and very specifically the Dangerous tour, which was the apotheosis of his creative journey.” Nottage accomplishes this by employing three actors of different ages to portray Jackson through the years. It’s a one-two-three punch of talent.

And just like that you’ve been hit by, you’ve been struck by, a smooth criminal.

& JULIET COSTUME DESIGNER REVEALS THE CHALLENGE OF MAKING CLOTHES RIGHT FOR SHAKESPEARE AND MAX MARTIN

A Tony winner for Peter and the Starcatcher, costume designer Paloma Young has been nominated for her work on this season’s & Juliet.

In the latest “Building Broadway” segment on the nationally syndicated “The Broadway Show with Tamsen Fadal,” Beth Stevens talks to the costume designer about her inspiration and process for constructing the old-world meets new-age garments. Young encountered a unique set of challenges with bringing the & Juliet designs to life. Young knew early on in the process that although the musical is set in the era of Shakespeare, straight period clothes were out of the picture for this jukebox musical set to the pop hits of the late ’90s and early aughts. Not only was she combining Shakespeare with modern pop culture, she also had to contend with Jennifer Weber’s athletic choreography.

In creating her concept, Young said, “We did want it to feel like anyone who ever has ever had any experience with a Shakespeare

& Juliet Company in “Blow” - Photo by Matthew Murphy. MurphyMade.

show would get something that they expected, but in an unexpected way.”

To achieve the looks, Young fused traditional Shakespearean elements with 1990s and 2000s streetwear. Many of the costume pieces were built from scratch within a “candy color palette,” as Young described. Then the garments were treated to look old and worn.

For that, Young said she assembled a team of breakdown artists, as they are called. Their job was to distress the costumes. But that was a tough task, especially when it came to wearing down the athletic wear because the sturdiness of those fabrics, which are meant to withstand daily physical activity, presented a challenge.

“In some ways, Nike and Adidas were the bane of my existence ’cause they made their clothes too well,” Young laughed.

Still, Young said that it’s been a fun challenge to figure out the broken-in look of the musical.

“We want these costumes to look like they’re being maintained by a scrappy troupe of actors,” Young said. “The concept of our design only improves the more that these costumes get repaired, broken down and repaired.”

& Juliet makes its Ohio premiere at the Ohio Theatre February 18-23. Tickets on sale September 26.
