Scripture Reading

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. James 1:6

Interview by David M. Wallace

Encore: Tell us the story behind your release, "Deeper Faith". Duawne: "Deeper Faith," is my faith walk over the last 15 years. I started saying to God, "I want more of you", I wanted my faith to grow deeper. I really didn’t know what I was asking for. Your faith doesn’t grow unless it’s tested and my faith has been tested in so many different ways over the last 8 years. Out of that faith walk, these songs were birthed. I would be tested in an area and sometimes I would think it’s punishment and God told me it’s not punishment, I’m perfecting you. I watched my mother have a stroke, my father-inlaw got diagnosed with cancer 2 times. Me and my family were out of our house for 10 months and 2 weeks because of a fire. God told me, I’m developing in you the gift of faith which is different from the measure of faith we all have. So, I stopped asking God why things were happening and just accepted there was something I was getting out of it that would be timeless. Then 2 years ago my family was struck by a drunk driver. Me, my wife and 3 daughters were all injured. My wife was off her foot for almost 6 months and God healed her foot. We were all blessed beyond measure, so I’ve been writing songs in that whole process. Encore: Can you talk about your experience singing backup for Donnie McClurkin? Duawne: I sang with Donnie McClurkin off and on for 14 years. It was really an enlightening experience traveling with him on his first solo record. He said we didn’t know what we were doing, he knew the first song and that was it. So, I’m thinking we are in for a bumpy ride, but I watched him be a vessel, I learned how to worship from him. I learned how to be authentic, he’s pretty transparent and I think when we start to show people who we are, we start to connect. In March 1999, we were in Hartford and Donnie always ended the concerts with "Stand," and "We Fall Down." We would do altar call and he would go down and lay hands and I would be behind

him assisting. On this particular day, he didn’t get off stage. There was this young guy and something kept calling out to my spirit, I was wondering when is Donnie going to pray for him because there was a ton of people at the altar. But, Donnie hadn’t gone down and one of the singers looked at me and said, "Go pray for him." I already heard God say pray for him and I’m like that’s not my role. My role is to stand at this mic and assist and I was afraid, so it took a lot out of me to actually do it. When I went to him, he got a breakthrough immediately. I went back to the mic and we left the stage and I asked Donnie, why he didn’t pray for anybody. That was the first night in years he didn’t pray for someone and he said, "It was your responsibility, that’s why I didn’t move." That night something shifted in me, the desire to do music left and the desire to minister is what I had. Encore: Can you talk about what you learned being a backup singer and the importance of an artist developing their own sound? Duawne: I’m a chameleon, I have my own distinct sound, but when I’m singing with people I put that aside and blend with them. I’ve sang with so many different people, I had to blend with them and their styles. Being versatile in how you sound is key. Also, don’t be arrogant, because there’s so many people who are great singers, musicians and writers and you’re one of them. You’re not the only one and I’ve bumped into a lot of people in the industry who are not nice. Study your craft, a lot of gospel artists don’t write. If you can write a paper, you can write a song and it’s very important to be a complete artist. Labels are falling off left and right and independent artists are rising. Some people want to stay in the background and I know that’s not where I was called to stay.

Interview by David M. Wallace

Encore: "You Shall Live," is the title of your latest album, can you tell us why you are making this declaration? Marvin: People from all walks of life make decisions as it pertains to giving up and throwing in the towel. They do it because of the challenges they face in life on a day-to-day basis. It’s a twofold title, it tells us to declare & decree living is the only option despite what odds may be against us. Also, it is my personal declaration that I’m going to live and make it through whatever happens in my life. Encore: Gospel music, just like any other industry is subject to certain words and phrases becoming trends. One such word is transparency. It seems like every artist is talking about being transparent, what is your take on it? Marvin: A lot of people misinterpret what transparency is about. I think when it comes to being a believer your transparency should be about overcoming what you’ve been fighting through. The whole purpose of a testimony is to encourage and to uplift. I’m a strong believer if you’re still dealing with a struggle than it's not good to be transparent in that area, because what you're showing is your scars that are still open which would make them wounds. What we’re supposed to do is show them our scars that are healed, that’s what Jesus did. I’m just a strong believer that when we witness to individuals, we are supposed to be transparent in what we overcame and that’s what I try to do with my music. Encore: In looking at the landscape of Gospel music today, do you feel we are making the necessary strides as an industry? Marvin: I’m excited about the direction Gospel music is going into. I believe we have some really good young artists that are coming on the scene who are writing relevant Gospel music that is impacting and empowering. I’ve been doing it for 27 years and I’m trying to make relevant music as well. People need messages that are encouraging and uplifting. When you listen to the landscape of music, the reality is that you don’t get that.

I just want to keep ministering to the masses and remaining relevant, that’s my goal. Encore: Being in the spotlight can be tough, especially since you balance dual roles of a pastor and artist. Can you talk about some of the challenges you face? Marvin: I always say, "To whom much is given, much more is required." The higher you go up, the more you’re being looked at. I think one of the challenges that we have is that people tend to forget that preachers are leaders, but they’re still people like everyone else. We make mistakes and the enemy fights us rougher than the average person because he knows that people are watching us. When we fall it can cause people to lose hope, so I tend to try to make sure I live my life above board as much as possible. I’m not saying I’m perfect, because I’m definitely not, but I pay attention to the fact that people are watching me and sometimes they’re looking for us to fall. The enemy is crafty, he’s slick, so we have to be on our guard on a day-to-day basis. Encore: Who’s on Marvin Sapp’s playlist? Marvin: I don’t listen to music that often, when I do it’s when I’m about to do a record. I listen to the trends of the time to know what people are gravitating to. Whenever I fly, I listen to the Winans first 3 albums on repeat. Encore: Many of us know you from your time with the legendary group, Commissioned. I miss the music and groups of those days. We don’t see many groups today. Marvin: Everybody’s trying to be an individual artist, no one is trying to come together as a group and do something impactful and powerful. Commissioned, The Winans are at least 20-30 years old. I haven't seen it in a while. I remember when Isaac, Lowell and the guys were together, but I haven’t seen it since the early 90’s. Even with the girl groups, we had the Clark Sisters, but the last one I remember that had staying power and sustainability was Witness.

Interview by David M. Wallace

Encore: Tell us about the message you are trying to tell on your album, "GRACE"? Debra: God’s grace and mercy is there for you no matter what you’re going through or what’s ahead, God loves you. I just want to spread that word, you can’t go all over the world sometimes, but music is universal so you can reach anybody and everybody and let them know God loves you. That’s the message of my CD, then it goes to the highest mountain because no matter what you do, God will take you through it, he’ll take you to the top with a praise. Encore: Can you talk about your experience growing up in a musical family? Debra: It was a fun environment, growing up in a musical family. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to go sing or I didn’t want to go to church because my father made it so much fun. I’m from a big family, I have 7 brothers and sisters so there was never a dull moment. I’m glad I was brought up in an environment like that. As I got older, my brothers and I had a group and I sang lead. We would sing at different churches, so I don’t have that testimony where my mom and dad dragged me to church, because that didn’t happen, we enjoyed it so much.

Encore: You know about the challenges of being an independent artist, can you offer some inspiring words based on your experience? Debra: First, you have to believe in what you’re doing and who you’re doing it for. If you’re just doing it to get out there because you see the ones who made it, know that they had to go through something. You can hear a hit on the radio, but sometimes that hit took 3 or 4 years, so don’t give up. Keep your eye on the prize and know who you’re doing it for and then surround yourself with people who have the same vision you have. Some people will not have the same belief but are in the Gospel industry and you have to be able to see who’s real and who’s not. It requires a lot of prayer, because it can be hard, but the reward in the end is awesome. The bottom line is, I might not be on national TV, but you have to see what God wants for you to do.

Encore: Tell us about your play?

Interview by David M. Wallace

LaJoyce: It is based on my best-selling book, "Faith Under Fire: Betrayed by a Thing Called Love." It's a true story about my first husband marrying me, knowing he had full blown AIDS and he didn’t tell me. I am miraculously HIV negative, also I didn’t know he was on the down-low until he was dead. That’s what the story is about and it all transpired while I was the publicity director for Artista Records working with Biggie, Puffy, Ms. Aretha and Whitney. Encore: Being a writer myself, I know writing can be therapeutic, was it like that for you? LaJoyce: It really was therapeutic, I’ve done the work for my healing prior to writing the book, but writing the book was necessary. Even after 10 years, I kept hearing my story over and over from other women. It was the same story, you could just close your eyes and just hear the layers of truth from other women who had gone through exactly what I had gone through. When I was going through, I thought I was the only one, we’re talking 1990 to 1995 and it was very early in the AIDS epidemic. We were still looking at gay white men being the only ones who were infected but in fact, black men were infected and black women were being infected by black men. Encore: Can you talk about some of the challenges in adapting your book into a play? LaJoyce: It's very descriptive, we have 90-minutes which is a short window of time to be able to tell 4 years. So, the challenge was trying to wiggle it down to the most important information. The play itself was necessary to have this urgent conversation with the community.

Photo courtesy of Derek Blanks Interview & design by David M. Wallace Encore: Tell us about the character you play on "Greenleaf"? Deborah: I play the role of Charity GreenleafSatterlee, she is the youngest daughter of the Bishop and First Lady. It’s been an honor to work Keith David & Lynn Whitfield. I’m the minister of music at our church and I’ve been married for 3 years on the show. Charity is just the baby, everything that is associated with being the youngest, is who Charity is. Encore: We know "Greenleaf," centers around a mega church, but can you give us some insight into the theme of the show? Deborah: It's really about a family and we talk about the church, but that’s really the backdrop. "Greenleaf," is centered around a family who have to deal with real life situations and of course it’s written for TV, so there's going to be some drama. I think people will truly enjoy it, they will identify with one or more of the characters. It’s going to be incredible, so stay tuned. Encore: Tell us about the musical, "Born For This," where you play your aunt, Cece Winans?

Deborah: It has been incredible, because it’s a show about my family, you would think I know it all, but I don’t. Through this process I get to appreciate and understand more of the struggles that they've been through growing up and how they became who they were. I had to do a lot of singing which is out of my comfort zone, but it’s been a blast and a challenge. Anything great in life has its challenges. Encore: You mentioned being in a comfort zone, how did you get comfortable? Deborah: I’m still not in a comfort zone, it’s hard. I have a gift to do it, but with any gift that you have, if you don’t challenge yourself, it can become difficult. I did all this schooling for acting, but not singing so I just had to dig in and face my fear. Growing up in my family, singing is something I never really wanted to do, but people are going to expect me to sound like someone in my family. Now, I’m in a place where I’m the minister of music on "Greenleaf," so I’m singing on the show and I have to go to the studio and record music and I’ve never done that. So, I’m still out of my comfort zone, but I got to keep believing I’m where God wants me to be.

Interview by David M. Wallace

Encore: Talk to us about your debut album, "Never Alone". Nirva: Basically, with everything going on in society and the craziness in the world, there’s a lot of fear and the idea of the album is even with all that’s going on, we can take courage, because we know that God is with us. We are never alone, because God is living and moving. Encore: You are a husband and wife team, tell us how you met and started working together? Nirva: We were both in the music industry doing background vocals for major artists. I was traveling with Toby Mac and Seth was traveling with Kirk Franklin at the time we met at a Billy Graham Crusade. A friendship started from there and when we married, both of us loved music and ministry but it was a slow progression into working together. We had been praying for that to come, so we started working on songs and going to the studio. We moved from Nashville to Florida to start a different chapter of life, but the last thing we expected was a record label to reach out and sign us. Working together is fun especially if you like who you married. Marriage is ministry itself, it's an accountability. Encore: You mentioned about doing background vocals for major artists, can you talk about that experience? Nirva: I’ve been traveling for the past years with Toby Mac, it’s been a crazy, awesome experience. I’ve gotten to see some crazy

places in the world I wouldn’t have had the chance on my own. He’s a great guy and he will not leave the building until he’s shaken everybody’s hand. So, one of the things I picked up was it has to be about ministry. It has to be about the people, you’ve got to have a heart for the people when you’re doing this musically. Seth: I’ve grown, my first premiere came from Kirk Franklin, it was a dream come true. Growing up I got to sing with Anthony Evans, Smokie Norful and Myron Butler, so I was trying to keep up with those guys. It was amazing to learn from their wisdom about being in ministry and their music was incredible. Then, I met Donnie McClurkin and started traveling with him and that was another level. He’s one of the most fun people you’ll be around and he challenges you to do ministry from a place you live in. Encore: Can you talk about your title track, "Brother"? Seth: It was a song we heard from a label mate of ours called, "The Brilliance". The lyrics and melody grabbed our attention, it says, "When I look into the face of my enemy, I see my brother." There’s so much division and anger in society with race, to politics and religion and Jesus says to love your enemy and cut through all that stuff. He reminds us even when people come against us to rise above that and bless those that curse you. It’s hard, but the lyrics remind us that God called us to a different way of life and to see people made in his image.

"Forget" is my most meaningful song, it’s about how my grandfather had Alzheimer’s for 6 years. I went to help him everyday and for some reason he never forgot my name, but he forgot everyone else’s. I was going to write a different song in Nashville and right before I did he fell. I had to fly home because he had a brain bleed and they told me not to expect much, that he would be out of it and that he’d probably forgotten my name. When I came home, he had remembered me and I got to thinking it was one of those God moments. Sometimes we feel God has forgotten us and he hasn’t and I feel that’s a really important message. My biggest thing is helping people and making sure everyone has someone to rely on and I don’t think people realize they can rely on God.
