COMMUNITY GUIDE

LOOKING BACK Cassville was established as the county seat of Barry County in 1845 and named for Brigadier General Lewis Cass, a leading statesman of that time. A little over seven years before its founding, the Cherokee Indians camped nearby as they made the infamous “Trail of Tears” journey from the southeastern part of the country to Oklahoma. The Civil War brought difficult times to Cassville as both Union and Confederate Armies marched through on the Old Wire Road that connected Springfield, Missouri to Fayetteville, Arkansas. Sixty-three Civil War soldiers, both Union and Confederate, are buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cassville. During this time, the Missouri General Assembly met in Cassville on October 31, 1861, and Missouri’s Articles of Secession were signed. Cassville served as the state capitol of Missouri for exactly one week. From 1896 until the late 1950s, the Cassville and Exeter Railroad, famous for being the shortest standard gauge railroad in the country, operated between the two towns. Cassville’s courthouse was built in 1912 from stone quarried nearby. It replaced the old brick structure that previously stood on the same site. In 1846, the first courthouse had been a log structure. The brick structure which replaced it, burned down in 1893. Many of the buildings currently downtown around the courthouse were built in the 1890s to replace those destroyed by that fire. More information on the history of Cassville can be found at the Barry County Museum, the Barry-Lawrence Regional Library, and on historical land mark signs in the area.

Cassville is a thriving city nestled in the heart of the Ozarks with several dining and lodging options for the vacationing family, a municipal airport, two weekly newspapers, financial institutions, a championship 18-hole golf course, a museum, and numerous recreational activity options. Roaring River State Park, one of Missouri’s most popular camping and fishing areas and named Top Trout Park in MO for 2012, is just seven miles from our downtown area. Opening day of trout season is March 1 and frequently attracts more than 4,000 participants. Located within the park is a trout hatchery, as well as spring-fed streams, making this an ideal spot for trout anglers. Cassville is only 14 miles from Table Rock Lake, proclaimed by Sports Afield Magazine as “the No. 1 bass fishing lake in the United States, with over 856 miles of shoreline.” Surrounded on two sides by the Mark Twain National Forest, the beautiful hills, dense forest, and rolling fields make the area ideal for hunters with seasons for deer, quail, squirrel, duck, and wild turkey. In every season and for every reason, Cassville is a great place to be! 6

THINGS TO SEE Roaring River State Park Located inside Roaring River State Park, the Emory Melton Inn and Conference Center and Restaurant offers conference services with four meeting rooms and a gift shop. Park activities include trout fishing, fly fishing schools, hiking, swimming, camping and nature programs. Family reunions are welcome! Roaring River State Fish Hatchery Located in Roaring River State Park, the hatchery provides raceways where trout are reared, as well as large display pools stocked with lunker trout. In addition, you can visit the hatchery building where eggs are incubated. Visitors can fish for trout on three miles of stream where the season extends from March 1 to October 31. Guided tours are available. 417-847-2430

Mark Twain National Forest Wildlife is typical of the Missouri Ozarks, including white-tailed deer, gray squirrel, and wild turkey. Recreation activities include hiking, viewing scenery, mountain biking, camping, picnicking, and motorized travel in licensed vehicles or ATVs displaying permits on numbered national forest roads open to all vehicle traffic. Roaring River Spring The spring emerges in a valley wall of Roaring River Hollow at the base of a massive cliff of dolomite limestone. It is the largest spring in the White River Basin with an annual average daily flow of 20.4 million gallons of water per day. The spring is the 20th largest in Missouri and is a constant 57 degrees. The highest ever recorded flow was 144 million gallons of water per day and the lowest was 4.8 million gallons per day. The spring follows a fault line that winds to the north with a displacement of about two feet. This fault is easily visible to someone standing in front of the bluff from which the spring emerges as it continues upward for about 90 feet. Adding to the beauty is another smaller spring perched at the top of the fault.

Sugar Camp National Scenic Byway A travel tour that has been recognized for its local scenic quality. The route is as follows: take Highway 112 south of Cassville and follow through Roaring River State Park into the Mark Twain National Forest. Turn on Forest Road 197 and follow for 8 miles to State Highway 86, then take Highway 86 North to the Junction of Highway 76. This is approximately a 30 mile loop taking slightly over an hour.

Barry County Museum Barry County’s past, present and future all meet under one roof at the Barry County Museum on South Highway 112, just outside the Cassville city limits. The 16,500 square-foot facility houses artifacts and exhibits relating to the geographical, agricultural, industrial, educational and social development of the county. Fields’ Photo Archives, with its collection of over one million negatives of people, places and events in Barry County, is also located within the museum building. The museum gift shop has a large selection of history, fiction and reference books about Barry County and the Ozarks. Lifetimes of Memories, a special collection of volumes offered exclusively at the museum, feature life stories shared by long-time Barry County citizens.
