Moving Forward The City of Tonge-Noxie was established July 21, 1866, getting its name from Chief Tonganoxie of the Delaware tribe that used to occupy the land. In 1900 the name was changed to its current form as Tonganoxie. The town was originally to be called “Buryville,” after a popular saloon owner in town, Magdalena Bury, but she insisted that it be named after Chief Tonganoxie. The first school was a log cabin built in 1869, it was replaced with a brick building in 1874 where the current elementary school stands. In 1883, Friends Academy was opened to students who desired “higher education,” but 16 years later, in 1899, it shut down. The high school was built in 1910 and the gymnasium was added in 1925. The first swimming pool, the “Chief Tonganoxie” swimming pool, was built in 1925 and was used until 2007. In 2007 the pool was renovated and expanded as the Tonganoxie Water Park. The renovation included slides, diving boards, zero-depth entry, an infant pool, new accessible bathrooms, and improved security. Today Tonganoxie now has 12 full and part-time policemen and women. The Tonganoxie Police Department has many unique qualities today that it lacked in the past. For example, today the police department has a Vacation Watch program and a Safe House program. The police force has also recently started the first canine unit for the city. In regard to schools, Tonganoxie USD 464 is frequently cited by Tonganoxie families as the #1 reason why they choose to call Tonganoxie home. The Tonganoxie public school system has the perfect combination of challenge, accessibility, and support provided by

4

talented professionals. The system consists of 3 schools: one elementary, one middle, and one high school. The community recently voted to approve construction of a new elementary school to be located near the current middle school. Tonganoxie currently has a population of 5,100 and enjoys low-crime, high quality schools, parks and trails. It combines a slice of country living, genuine hospitality, and business opportunity. Tonganoxie is ideally located along US 24-40 Highway and just 3 miles north of Interstate 70. Commercial and freight air transportation is available at Kansas City International Airport (MCI) about 30 minutes away. Tonganoxie is only 25 minutes away from downtown Kansas City, 15 minutes from Lawrence, and 40 minutes from Topeka-the capital of Kansas. There are numerous institutions of higher learning within an easy driving distance. This includes the University of Kansas, Kansas City Kansas Community College, Johnson County Community College, Washburn University, Baker University, University of Saint Mary, Mid-America Nazarene University, Ottawa University, the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and many more colleges and technical schools. Locals enjoy all major metropolitan services, amenities, arts, entertainment, sports, festivals, diversity, transportation, award winning schools, hometown atmosphere, and scenic countryside! It’s no wonder that Tonganoxie has nearly doubled in size since 2000.

The trail has six stations of fitness equipment along it. The park has playground equipment complete with swings and a climber. Chieftain Park includes soccer fields, lighted tennis, basketball, sand volleyball, and horseshoe courts.

Chieftain Trail

The Chieftain Trail has commonly been known as the trail that wraps around both the Chieftain and VFW Park. However, in 2014 the trail extended into a “Second Phase.” Phase II of Chieftain Trail begins at Magnatech Park and travels northeast along Tonganoxie Road and south on Laming to Woodfield Drive. The trail extension is nearly 1.3 miles long and connects to another 1.2 miles of existing trails. The new connection provides a scenic path along Tonganoxie Drive, to the Urban Hess area. Nearby Attractions Kansas Speedway

Kansas Speedway began construction in 1999 and officially opened in 2001. The Speedway lies just off to the south side of the Legends and Village West shopping area. The track was made to seat over 72,000 patrons in 65 different rows, designed to give everyone the perfect seat! As a safety measure for racers, the speedway uses a Steel and Foam Energy Reduction System (SAFER) made out of steel tubing and energy-absorbing foam pads that are attached to the existing concrete retainer walls on the track. With about 1.28 of its 1.5 mile track lined, it has the longest length of track to be protected by this SAFER system in the NASCAR circuit. They host 2 NASCAR races each year and hold a Richard Petty Driving School, which allows people to ride along in race cars, or even drive one. The Speedway is located 15 miles from Tonganoxie.

Leavenworth County State Lake Although the State Lake is not located inside our city limits, it is only three miles away and is closely identified with Tonganoxie. It offers a quiet setting for picnics, two large shelter houses, overnight camping and boat launching facilities. There are Kansas State Park regulations posted on the north road as you enter the park and also by the boat ramp. These explain fishing regulations, limits, size rules, etc. They also explain camping regulations.

Legends Outdoor Mall The Legends and Village West shopping area is located about 15 miles east of Tonganoxie. It is home to over 100 shopping and dining venues, and even a movie theater. On Sunday mornings the theater is used as a church. Village West has dining options of every flavor

and budget to match your wants and needs. The same is to be said for the shopping venues, there is a store to fit every budget and style that one could possess. This is an outdoor shopping center that thrives no matter what the weather.

Kansas City T-Bones The Kansas City T-Bones is a minor league baseball team with its roots in Kansas City, Kansas. It is in the same area as the Legends Shopping Center and is only about 20 minutes from Tonganoxie. During baseball season, the T-Bones travel around the United States to play, but always have plenty of games in Kansas City at their own Community America Ballpark. The T-Bones and their mascot, Sizzle, are a homerun for family fun in the Kansas City area and its baseball fans.

Easter Egg Hunt

This Easter egg hunt is for the whole family. There are different hunts for every age category. Thousands of candy-filled eggs are hidden in Chieftain Park just waiting to be discovered. Grinter Farms Sunflower Field

Between Tonganoxie and Lawrence, there is a farm along Highway 24 that plants a large field full of big yellow sunflowers. The sunflowers alternate between two fields that lay a 1/2 mile apart. In even numbered years, the flowers are right along the highway, and in odd years, they are in a field right down the street. It is impossible to precisely predict when the sunflowers are in full bloom because they are only in bloom for about two weeks (one week if the weather is especially hot). Predominately a corn and soy-

bean operation, Jim Grinter started growing sunflowers in the 70’s, hoping to use the oil to fuel his machinery. That didn’t pan out as the nearest “crusher” was in western KS and the trucking would have been cost prohibitive. He did, however, like the sunflowers and stuck with planting them, only he bagged them and sold them for bird-feed. The “pilgrimage of the people” just sort of happened. People would see them; stop; take photos; then tell their friends about it. More and more people stop every year. The Grinters say, “We probably couldn’t stop it if we tried.”

Leavenworth County Fair

Family fun awaits you at the Leavenworth County Fair! The fair invites everyone - adults, the elderly, kids, and couples - to enjoy all the great games and amazing attractions that it has to offer. The fair has plenty of games and rides for the whole family to enjoy, but don’t forget about the great food too! No matter what age range, there is something for you! If you’re not the kind of person who enjoys carnival rides, there are farm animals to see, a mud run, and a rodeo to entertain you! The fair lasts for 5 days with the carnival section going through 4 nights.

Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting

The Mayor’s Christmas Tree lighting is a free event in downtown Tonganoxie. Visitors can enjoy carolers dressed in traditional garments circa 1900, carriage rides, baked goodies and hot cocoa while watching the Mayor light the 10-foot tree at 4th Street between Bury and Green.

Spooktacular

Every year, on the last Friday of October, children and their families can visit Tonganoxie businesses on 4th Street for Halloween treats and some family fun. There is a scarecrow-decorating contest, a prize raffle, a pumpkincarving contest, and a live DJ to supply the music.

St. Patricks Day Parade

Tonganoxie goes Green every year to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. 2013 was the 25 year celebration of this annual event.

Summer Kickoff Party

The Summer Kickoff Party happens in May at Chieftain

Park. This event offers free food and drinks, and plenty of entertainment for the whole family. During this event, there is a Silly Critter Pet Show with all kinds of interesting categories. Remember that this is at Chieftain Park, so everyone is free to enjoy the Chieftain Trail, tennis courts, basketball court, soccer field, horse-shoe courts, sand-volleyball area, and play ground!

Tonganoxie Days

Kirby McRill 5K

Kirby McRill was born in 1875 and was raised on a farm near Tonganoxie. But, farming really wasn’t his cup of tea. What Kirby really liked to do was walking and eating. Daily he would walk from his farm to Tonganoxie. Arriving at noon, he would stop in the bakery, buy a loaf of bread and a quart of ice cream and sit outside and eat it for his lunch. If he had business in Leavenworth he would walk from his farm to the Courthouse in Leavenworth, a trip of about 30 miles. In 1917, he had some very important business in Leavenworth. He had been summoned to jury duty. On that Feb. 5th morning, the temperature was below zero and there was a blizzard outside. Kirby left his home at 2:30 a.m. and arrived at the Courthouse at 8:30 a.m. When he arrived, an icicle a foot long had frozen to his beard. Of course, the court had been closed due to the blizzard, but Kirby made it on time none-the-less. The story of Kirby’s blizzard walk was published in the local newspaper and before long, newspapers nationwide picked up the story. Kirby McRill had his 15 minutes of fame. But, he so enjoyed the notoriety, he began walking longer and longer journeys. In May, 1920, Kirby walked from Topeka, Kansas, to Chicago, Illinois in 7 days! Among other nomenclatures, such as “Kirby, the unkissed,” “The walking marvel from Tonganoxie,” and “Sandwich Man,” Kirby has been affectionately described as, “the genuine article in native eccentricity.” Join us every Spring as we celebrate Kirby and Tonganoxie’s beautiful parks and walking trails with our annual Kirby McRill 5K Walk. Police & Fire Departments Tonganoxie Police Department The Tonganoxie Police Department’s main function is the emergency response to potential life threatening events. These events can range from medical emergencies, traffic accidents, disturbances, or other events that can result in death or serious bodily harm. The Police also protect the citizens’ property by suppressing criminal activity with rigorous patrols and enforcement of traffic rules and regulations. The Officers are all State Certified and trained to respond to criminal and emergency incidents. But they do have additional services that they offer to citizens: -Vacation Watch: If you are going to be gone for an extended period of time, you can register your home for a vacation watch. Then Police Officers will periodically check the premises of your home daily until you return. This way you can have a happy and stress free vacation. -Safe House: In partnering with the community group T3, the Police Department has designated homes in the community as “Safe Houses.” Individuals at these homes have undergone criminal background checks and been given guidance on what to do in an emergency. If youth in the community become the victims of criminal activity, including bullying, they can be safe by going to one of the designated homes and getting assistance. A sign has been placed in the yard of each of these homes for easy identification. -Cadets: The Police Department has a number of cadets, young adults ranging in age from 14 to 21 participating in this Explorer program to learn what Police Officers Activities are as they discover if Law Enforcement is a career path they wish to pursue. -Animal Control: If you are disturbed by a nuisance animal contact the Police Department and the animal control officer will be sent to assist you.

locate narcotics, track a missing person/child, track and apprehend a violent offender, conduct area searches for evidence, conduct building searches, provide officer protection and much more. Chief was purchased by the Tonganoxie Police Department in April of 2014 with the assistance of many local groups and organizations. Chief has since been undergoing extensive training with his K-9 Handler for the last 8 weeks. Chief will stay with his Handler when off duty and enjoy the confines of his newly constructed massive Dog House/Kennel which was built by the students of the Tonganoxie High School. Chief has already been actively protecting our community in the short amount of time he has been with us. Any questions about the Tonganoxie Police Department K-9 Program and or to request a demonstration please contact Lt. Billy Naff.

Tonganoxie Fire Department

Current personnel include a Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief, Captains, Lieutenants, and Firefighters. TFD is a combination department meaning that both Full-time, Part-time, and volunteer firefighters are utilized to respond to emergencies. The training requirements are the same whether a firefighter is Full-time or volunteer. One full-time firefighter is on duty 24 hours a day on a rotating schedule with volunteers and part-time firefighters staffing additional shifts as needed. In addition to the staff at the station, volunteers respond from their homes to provide additional resources or to cover the station depending on the call for service. The department currently operates two Engine companies, one

Quint, a brush truck, and a command vehicle all of which are housed in a 5,000 square foot five bay station located in the heart of downtown. The city currently holds an ISO Class 6 rating and has mutual aid agreements with nine nearby city and township fire departments to share resources and equipment when needed. The staff is currently made up of 4 career firefighters and 23 volunteer/part-time firefighters. The city of Tonganoxie requires citizens to have a burn permit. Citizens who live inside the city limits that would like a burn permit must fill out a burn permit form available at the fire station.
