One Endeavour $2.3m projects open doors for people with a disability Cairns and Sunshine Coast houses boost choice and independence Graeme Loveday, local MP Minister Mark McArdle and CEO David Barbagallo turned the first sod for the construction of two modern houses for people with a disability at Pelican Waters on the Sunshine Coast. Graeme’s father Fred Loveday said his son and others moving into the new houses would each have their own room with plenty of space, fans and air-conditioning “they’ve got everything they want now.” The developments are part of the ambitious, self-funded At Home With Choices project to upgrade and redevelop residential services into contemporary homes with a maximum of four tenants. (left-right) Fred and Graeme Loveday are sold on the new houses being built at Pelican Waters.
Graham Loveday and Graham Johnson are looking forward to major changes. Both men were keen enough to pick up a shovel and get work moving as Endeavour Foundation prepares to build new houses on the Sunshine Coast and in Cairns.
Mr Barbagallo said the two five-bedroom houses in Pelican Waters would accommodate eight people with a disability, with additional bedrooms for support staff. Smaller houses will offer residents more opportunity for independent living skill development, within a supportive environment. Designed with assistive technologies and universal access, the houses will also have

From the Desk of the CEO & Chairman
Brighter times ahead at last These are heady days for everyone connected with the disability sector. The announcement of the increase in the Medicare levy to pay for DisabilityCare has maintained the momentum towards an equitable system for people with a disability. Compared to the past, there has been significant progress since the Productivity Commission told us in 2011 that the disability support system is “underfunded, unfair, fragmented and inefficient”. We still have work to do but bipartisan political support for the levy, full funding in the recent Budget and the Opposition’s positive response, is reassuring. We are closing in on what we set out to achieve some three years ago.It is interesting to reflect that no political party had a disability policy two elections ago. Through Every Australian Counts, we have come a long way. For those people who are still to be convinced by the maths, it is worth reiterating what the Productivity Commission reported:
All governments face future liabilities with their current unstable systems. From an economic perspective, the benefits of the NDIS will exceed the costs.
Clients give and receive counsel People who utilise Endeavour Foundation employment and disability services in Western Sydney and throughout Queensland joined together at the annual meeting of the Client Council. It was a chance to listen, offer feedback, ask questions and gather information - and then share it with colleagues and friends at home. Members of the NDIS and You reference group (see banner photo, front page) had the opportunity to try out their presentation skills when they presented the newly developed explanatory video and workshop. Client Council delegates worked through a series of workshop topics, raising questions and discussing issues about the new DisabilityCare (NDIS) scheme. In the afternoon, session delegates heard more about advocacy and gathered information to share with others in their local community.
If that doesn’t convince everyone, then perhaps they should remember that disability does not discriminate and anyone can acquire a disability at any time. DisabilityCare will improve the lives of millions of Australians and who can argue with that?
Grant Murdoch Chairman
Funding support vital for NDIS future Three months ago, I wrote that everyone has a duty to support the National Disability Insurance Scheme – now known as DisabilityCare Australia. I would like to think that is still the case. The federal government announcement of a levy to help fund the scheme has been cemented in the Budget and agreed by the Coalition. The support for the NDIS from both sides of the political divide reveals that fair funding and adequate support of people with a disability and their carers is recognised as one of the most important issues in the Australian community. The fact that the NDIS legislation passed through both houses of Parliament without a contrary word said it all. Never in the history of our federation have so many MPs and Senators spoken in support of a piece of legislation. There is still work to be done in certain areas of our country but we are getting there. It is worth reiterating that the NDIS makes economic sense with an increase in employment opportunities for people with a disability and their carers. This benefits all Australians. Most of all, it brings opportunity where there was none.

Grants funding a brighter future Applicants for an Endeavour Foundation Endowment Challenge Fund grant will be notified of the outcome later this month. The Fund encourages innovation in the disability sector by providing grants to researchers and students examining significant issues for people with a disability. Grants are also available for non-profit organisations in Queensland and New South Wales to support engagement and social inclusion. The Endowment Challenge Fund was founded by Endeavour Foundation in 2009 and is governed by an independent Board. Applications are assessed by an independent panel with grant winners to be announced on 28 June.

Firstly a guide was developed by and for people with an intellectual disability. A service user reference group (see front page photo) oversaw the creation of a video guide called “NDIS and You”, a workbook and training modules which assist people with an intellectual disability to understand DisabilityCare. Peer education workshops for people with an intellectual disability were held in Brisbane, Launceston, Geelong, Adelaide, Newcastle and Canberra.
A tribute to Mr Bob Stockham Tributes have been paid to Bob Stockham from many areas of Endeavour Foundation and throughout the Burdekin region following his passing in February. Mr Stockham was deeply involved with Endeavour Foundation in north Queensland through education, work, support and fundraising. He worked tirelessly in Ayr selling raffle tickets for clubs and charities which earned him the sobriquet of ‘Lucky Bob.’ Bob was a strong client advocate and served as a delegate at Endeavour Foundation’s Client Council on occasion. He had a very caring nature and is remembered by those who knew him as someone who had a presence as part of the local community. He cut Endeavour Foundation’s 60th anniversary cake alongside CEO David Barbagallo at the local celebrations which, by happy chance, coincided with Bob’s own 60th birthday. Last year, he was recognised at the annual Rotary Awards. With typical humility Bob responded by saying, “I shouldn’t have got that reward. It should have gone to someone more deserving than me.”
Students top of class in sporting double Two Brisbane students have been enjoying great success on the sports front.
Designing the future We’ve been working closely with people with a disability, carers and service providers on three Practical Design Fund projects in readiness for the introduction of DisabilityCare Australia (the new name for the NDIS).
In conjunction with the Centre of Law Governance and Public Policy at Bond University, we also developed “Discover: A resource for people planning for the future” (at left). With up-to-date information on DisabilityCare Australia, it has a strong focus on decision making and legal planning. A third project mapped workforce development needs in the disability sector. Recommendations looked at future workforce skills, ability to respond to reforms and the transition to DisabilityCare Australia.

Tomorrow’s leader today Alex Baker has reached another career milestone and graduated from the federal government’s Leaders for Tomorrow program. The Wacol employee and COMET participant is one of only 200 people to be provided with 12 months of leadership support and skill development to become leaders of the future. During the scheme Alex completed his Cert II in Business Administration and presented to the new participants in Leaders for Tomorrow. He found time to train and was selected for the McIntyre Centre Para-Equestrian dressage squad.
“By linking participants with appropriate training, support and mentoring, Leaders for Tomorrow helps participants into work and education so they can become leaders in their chosen field,” Ms Rishworth said. The graduate: Alex Baker receives his certificate from Parliamentary Secretary for Disability and Carers Amanda Rishworth at a ceremony in Brisbane.
Graduating means a lot to him.“It was a great feeling to graduate after loads of hard work and my family were really pleased too. I feel proud to have been given the opportunity to take part in Leaders for Tomorrow and I’d like to thank everyone who helped,” Alex said. The Leaders for Tomorrow initiative supports people with a disability to be at the forefront in business, the community and government. It is part of the federal government’s $11 million package of community participation programs. Parliamentary Secretary for Disability and Carers Amanda Rishworth presented Alex with his graduation certificate at an awards ceremony in Brisbane.
Confronting disability, ageing and health
Smile at a crocodile: Kristy Rodden receives advice from Crocs centre Ben Allen before shooting a hoop, with Paula Tracey next in line.
As people with an intellectual disability live longer than ever before, support organisations must know how to respond to the increasing vulnerability that comes with ageing. Our Policy, Research, Planning & Strategy team has hosted a two-day workshop on disability, ageing and health. Sessions were led by Professor Ruth Webber, a researcher at Australian Catholic University and Professor Barbara Bowers, Director of the Centre for Excellence in Long-term Care at the University of Wisconsin, USA. Professor Webber is researching improved outcomes for ageing people with an intellectual disability who live in residential aged care. About half of the 70 delegates were allied health professionals, representatives of disability service organisations or external support workers. There were also contributions from aged care and disability representatives and families.
Looking ahead: Professors Ruth Webber and Barbara Bowers are experts in the field of ageing.

The Nambour fishing group has enjoyed success in recent times, landing some sizeable catches.
Endeavour Foundation in Townsville has been busy hanging out with some of the biggest names in Australian sport.
Annie Priest caught a 1kg bream while Gene Wise and Craig O’Riordan (above) appeared in the local media thanks to the large flathead they reeled in. The fishermen caught a 44cm dusky flathead off Chambers Island in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast.
The Gold Coast Suns AFL team was in town to play a game and invited a few people from Endeavour Foundation to watch them train.
The fishing team have been going out every week for a number of years, dropping in a line at different locations every week. Read about Annie, Gene and Craig on our Facebook page at facebook.com/endeavourfoundation.

They stayed there for five days, and Peter received plaudits for his work. A member of his team sent a message to the SES coordinator saying, “Peter has been a hit with the crew and has done an excellent job on deployment. His skill with the radios (using the codes, sending and receiving messages) has continued to improve. TV stars: Bob and Fay Long are interviewed by Channel Nine’s Tim Arvier for A Current Affair.
A house to call home for Bob and Fay Bob and Fay Long had been living in rented accommodation for 25 years but were anxious to get a house without stairs so Fay could get around more easily after a battle with cancer affected her mobility. Their lives were changed when they won their own single-storey dream home at Peregian Springs on the Sunshine Coast, valued at $769,494, thanks to Endeavour Foundation Lotteries. “We started buying tickets to win an Endeavour Foundation prize home when we saw the Life-Changer Lottery house in Noosa on Channel Nine’s A Current Affair program,” said 68 year-old Bob.
Fulfilling dreams with Designer Lottery The latest prizes from Endeavour Foundation Lotteries put the ‘WOW!’ into ‘wow factor’. Our Designer Lottery prizes include a luxury holiday to New York, an escape to Helsinki in Finland, an Apple product combo and much more. There’s also the chance to win an amazing New York-inspired designer home in Thornlands, Brisbane, valued at $921,727. Tickets can be purchased until Wednesday 24 July and the draw takes place on Wednesday 31 July.
“All we ever wanted was a house which would suit Fay because it’s hard for her with stairs now. We feel so lucky, it’s incredible.” Aircraft technician Bob joked to work colleagues about winning the house… only to learn soon after that they had! “On the day of the draw, I was starting to get nervous and even asked a supervisor if Fay had called to say we’d won the house. “When Endeavour Foundation’s Prize Home Lotteries and Bingo Manager Wilma Burton called to say we’d won I just said “you’ve got to be kidding!” Ironically Bob, Fay and daughter Melissa also ended up appearing on A Current Affair as the program was so intrigued by their story. “People at work said it was nice to actually see someone in the flesh who has won a house,” Bob said. We agree!

Getting out there in Sydney The Endeavour Foundation Recycled Clothing store in Penrith has been building a strong customer base in the two and a half years since opening. Joan Frare, store manager for 18 months, has worked hard promoting the store in the Sydney community at every opportunity and “getting ourselves out there”, as she puts it. The store has 620 VIP members who receive a monthly email about events like the recent ‘Twilight Gala’ fundraising fashion show, in support of midwife training in Ethiopia. It raised almost enough to train a midwife with the Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia charity. Importantly for Joan, it was also a chance to showcase Endeavour Foundation and the store to local people, many of whom joined as VIP members. Store manager Joan Frare was delighted. “We got plenty of recognition from that event and the more we do that, the better,” she said.
The revamped Cairns store continues to receive rave reviews from customers and word-of-mouth recommendations are attracting new shoppers.

Our business solutions
Longevity in Geebung Trumps top of list When it comes to food packaging, Trumps is one of Endeavour Foundation’s biggest customers. This major wholesaler, distributor and processor of food products has been working with our commercial operations for more than a decade. To say that the relationship has burgeoned is something of an understatement. In the beginning, our daily packaging averaged two tonnes per day maximum. We now pack up to ten tonnes per day for this leading company. Trumps is a customer at our business sites in Bundaberg, Gympie, Toowoomba and Wacol, south west of Brisbane. The teams specialise in certain areas of packaging, decanting the foodstuffs from bulk deliveries into bags weighing between one and five kilos.
Declan Dart is the third generation owner of the family business which has operated for 73 years. He says the relationship with Endeavour Foundation is important. “It’s a long-term partnership and we’ve grown together,” Mr Dart said. “Endeavour Foundation is part of our team, not a separate entity. Nothing seems too much trouble and they always find a way to make things happen.” The excellent rapport between customer and supplier was demonstrated during the Queensland floods of 2011. The Trumps site in Rocklea, Brisbane was hit badly so a team of Endeavour Foundation volunteers arrived to help. Declan Dart says that incident speaks volumes.
“The team is so good to work with and is part of our business. We recognise what Endeavour Foundation does in the community and we are proud to be working with them.”
The President of the Castle Hill Lions Club, Mr Enio Dona, says it was not a difficult decision to donate to Endeavour Foundation.

Safety first says Paralympian John Marshall
Local member Paul Neville MP and representatives of other disability service providers were among the guests at the morning tea to mark the introduction of the system. The equipment, which was funded by a grant from the Queensland government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund, will help to maintain and improve the health and well-being of supported employees, some of whom have complex medical and support needs. John Marshall’s message about safety is stark. “Safety at work is our responsibility,” he says. The police officer was a guest speaker at Endeavour Foundation in Mt Druitt, Sydney and encouraged employees to recognise the importance of safety inside and outside the workplace. Mr Marshall represented Australia in archery at the Sydney 2000 Paralympics. His life was changed by a motorcycle accident at work. “As well as looking after ourselves, we must look out for our colleagues,” he said.

Construction is underway on four houses in Cairns and Pelican Waters, with residents expected to move in later this year. Planning for three new houses in Rockhampton has also begun. Rally cars have been spotted at promotions and shows all over the state, with the Events team hosting a Great Endeavour stand at the National Outdoors 4x4 Show in Brisbane and at Mackay Canegrowers’ inaugural Ag.Trade.Life expo in Mackay. All eyes are now on the Queensland Great Endeavour launch site, Caloundra RSL. A fantastic array of free family-friendly outdoor entertainment has been lined up for the morning of Saturday 13 July – so if you’re in the area, come and join in the fun! As a last warm-up before the main event, teams will put their newly tuned vehicles to the test on the second One Day Rally. It kicks off in Dalby on Saturday 15 June, to be followed by one of our legendary rally social nights. And don’t forget – the third Caltex fuel vouchers raffle is open until 4 July, with $3,000 of fuel vouchers to be won!

First past the post: Our name was plain to see for anyone watching the Silver Slipper event.
Golden day at Silver Slipper With 180 guests, fabulous races, fashions in the field and a visit by racing luminaries, our third annual event at Rosehill Gardens was exhilarating. The Silver Slipper Stakes is one of the showpiece occasions of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival at the famous course and it attracted Endeavour Foundation supporters and horse racing experts alike. Raffles, a live auction, an auction of glamorous fascinators and generous donations raised almost $5,000 on the day. Even the wet weather couldn’t dampen spirits at one of Sydney’s finest venues. To cap off a great day, legendary trainer Gai Waterhouse and jockey Corey Brown dropped in for a chat. Thank you to everyone who supported this event with their patronage and donations.
