A bear called
Ted
Written by Valérie Cros, illustrated by Éric Gasté
One evening at the circus, the ring master announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls… be very scared… for here comes… TED!” There was a drum roll and a huge bear walked into the ring. 3
Suddenly, there was silence in the big top… Ted’s trainer cracked his whip and the bear stood up on his back legs. He gave a fierce roar. “GRRR! GRRRRR! ARRRGGRR!” The children in the audience trembled in fear and cuddled up to their parents… The bear really did look very scary!
4
5
When the show was over Ted went back to his cage. Tears began to trickle down his muzzle because this big, fierce bear had the gentle heart of a teddy bear. “I’m tired of scaring little children and making people think I’m fierce,” thought Ted sadly. “I don’t want to be a monster any more!” So with one swipe of his powerful paw, he smashed the lock on his cage and ran away…
6
Ted wandered through the town. Suddenly, he noticed a little shop. He looked through the window and saw lots of toy teddy bears. They were sitting quietly, waiting. Ted’s beautiful eyes lit up. He found a way into the shop through the back door. A moment later, the big bear was sitting in the window with the toy teddy bears.
The next morning, a man walked past the shop, whistling. “Wow! What a great teddy bear!” he said when he saw Ted. “I would have loved a big bear like that when I was a child…” Without a second thought, he went into the shop. “I’ll take the big teddy bear in the window,” he said to the shop assistant.
8
When Ted heard that, he was overjoyed. But he was careful not to move a whisker! The man dragged Ted to his van, huffing and puffing. “This teddy bear is really heavy… almost like a real bear!”
9
When Ted arrived at his new home, he heard a little boy squeal in surprise. Milo jumped for joy when he realised that the huge teddy bear was for him! “Wow! Thanks, Dad!” he said. “I love this teddy bear!” He put his little arms around Ted and hugged him tightly. Ted was the happiest bear ever!
10
11
Ted loved his new life as a teddy bear. Every evening in bed, Milo hugged him and told him his secrets. “Oh, if only you could answer me! I love you teddy!” sighed the boy as he fell asleep against the bear’s soft fur. When, at last, Milo’s eyes closed, Ted kissed his friend’s cheek. Then he slipped out quietly to go and find some food.
12
13
But sometimes, Milo was not very kind to his teddy. When he wanted to have fun, he jumped on Ted’s fat tummy and laughed out loud! When Milo was in a bad mood, he pulled Ted’s ears. It was hard for Ted to say nothing. “If only I could reply,” he thought. “I would teach this little rascal to treat bears with respect!” But Ted never moved a claw or an ear. After all, he was supposed to be a toy teddy bear!
14
15
One night, when Ted came back from his usual walk, he let out a huge sneeze. “AAACHOOO!” He made such a noise that Milo woke up. “Oh no!” thought Ted in a panic. “Milo will be scared of me and he won’t love me any more!” But instead of being scared, the little boy was fascinated. “My teddy bear has come to life!” said Milo, touching Ted’s damp nose. “But shush! It’s our secret. Dad must never know.”
16
17
After that, whenever Milo was sure that nobody could see them, he jumped on his bear’s back. The two friends went for long walks in the park. Sometimes Milo and Ted had fun playing tricks. “Look at my teddy bear! He climbed to the top of that tree,” said Milo to passers-by. They raised their eyebrows and said, “That’s… that’s incredible!!!”
18
19
The months and years went by and Milo grew big. One day he went for a walk with Ted in the forest. Suddenly, a female bear appeared. She sat down close to them and stared at Ted. The big bear wanted to go and join her but he didn’t want to leave his friend Milo. The boy understood. He said, “You know, I’m big now and I don’t need a teddy bear any more… and you don’t need me any more either. So off you go!” Ted wasn’t sure but in the end, he did as Milo said and set off into the mountains with the female bear.
20
21
When Milo got home, he looked up at the starry sky. “Those bright stars form a constellation called the Great Bear,” he said. “I think it’s smiling down at me…” Just then, Milo heard a gentle growl coming from the mountains. It might have been Ted saying goodbye. Milo whispered back, “Goodbye, my teddy bear…”

WHY DO MOSQUITOES BITE?
LOOK OUT! HERE THEY COME!
LET’S GO AND SEE WHAT THE ANSWER COULD BE…
25
Bzzzz, bzzzz!!! You can hear it but you may not be able to see it… Ouch! Too late! It just bit you. Find out why mosquitoes bite!
1. Mosquitoes eat liquids.
Their mouth has a long thin tube that they use, like a straw, to suck their food. They push this into people’s skin. It’s thinner than a needle, so we don’t feel it.
SO WHY DOES IT HURT?
2. When a mosquito has
sucked enough blood, it pulls the tube out. There are little hooks on the end of it that cut our skin. Ouch! It stings a bit! 26
WHAT DO THEY NEED BLOOD FOR?
SO WHY DO MOSQUITO BITES ITCH? Scratch! Scra tch!
4. The mosquito injects its saliva
(spit) when it bites. This stops the blood from drying while the mosquito is sucking. The saliva makes the bite itch and swell up. It’s not a good idea to scratch!
3. Female mosquitoes need energy
so they can lay lots of eggs. Our blood gives them plenty of energy! But they only bite when they are going to lay eggs. Male mosquitoes don’t bite people or animals. They drink a liquid called nectar that is made by plants.
NOW I UNDERSTAND. ONLY FEMALE MOSQUITOES BITE US TO GET ENERGY FROM OUR BLOOD. THEY NEED THE ENERGY SO THEY CAN LAY LOTS OF EGGS! 27
Song thrushes In summer they sing beautifully from morning until night!
28
Where do they live?
In Europe and around the Mediterranean sea, in the countryside and in cities.
What do they eat?
Insects, fruit, snails‌
How big are they?
They are as long as an adult’s hand. 29
This thrush spent most of the morning singing. Now he is hungry so he flies off to look for food.
30
The thrush lands on the ground. This is dangerous as a cat or a fox could try and catch him! He looks around to make sure he is safe.
He searches through the dead leaves with his beak. He pecks, scratches and turns the leaves over ‌ What is he looking for?
He has found a snail! His favourite food! But snails are not easy to eat as they hide inside their shell. Luckily, the thrush is very clever‌
31
Text: Emmanuel Chanut. Illustrations: Marie Winter.-Victor.
He carries the snail over to a stone and bashes it hard. The shell breaks. The thrush has a feast!
32
When the thrush finishes eating, he flies back to his tree. He will sing so that all the other thrushes know this is where he lives.
Did you know?
Thrushes, like many other birds, have two small pockets in their throat that fill with air. This allows them to sing longer songs.
Only male thrushes sing to mark out their territory and also to attract females.

Thrushes, blackbirds and robins are related. If you watch them carefully, you will see that they are the same shape and they move in the same way.

This morning, the Jolly’s house is very quiet. It’s Sunday and everyone is still asleep… Everyone except George and Millie who are creeping downstairs like little mice… 34
Millie says quietly, “Shush… We mustn’t wake Mum and Dad, or it won’t be a surprise any more!” George nods. He loves surprises.
George and Millie have decided to prepare a surprise breakfast for their parents. George says, “Here’s the coffee powder. Do you know how to make it?” “No, we can just mix it with cold milk!” says Millie. 35
George says, “Shall I slice the bread?” “Put the knife down!” says Millie. “You know you are not allowed to touch it!”
She says, “We can use biscuits… and to soften them we can pour over some fruit smoothie.”
“I’m going to make some cocoa-flavoured banana mash,” says George.
“And I’m soaking the biscuits in milk as well!” says Millie.
Coffee powder with cold milk, banana mash, biscuits with fruit smoothie and milk… What a great surprise George and Millie have prepared for their parents! Then suddenly, they hear the front door opening. Someone is coming… It’s Dad! 36
“Hmm! What a lovely surprise! Thank you my darlings.” Mum is certainly going to get a surprise when she tastes George and Millie’s… surprising recipes! The Jolly family enjoy their huuuge breakfast in bed!

“Aw no, Dad! It’s a surprise!” say George and Millie. Dad smiles, “I wanted to give you a surprise too, my darlings! I got some croissants!”
