Volume 11, Issue 4, Fall 2012
Trail Markers is published Quarterly in January, April, July, and October.
In This Issue:
It is distributed solely to members of the Texas Endurance Riders Association, and is comprised of both their input and the opinion of the editor, neither of which represent the organization’s views or official stance. Of course, if there is no input from members, then you’re pretty much stuck with the editor’s opinions. Which don’t amount to much, really, but they can sometimes make interesting reading. Other times … well, the term “bird cage liner” comes to mind.

Thank you Summer for leaving, finally! I’m not one who enjoys the heat but I am very thankful for the cooler weather which we had at Ride the Storm and I look forward to many more cooler weather rides. Speaking of cooler weather rides, we have Trace the Trails coming up and the TERA meeting in which we get to approve some new candidates for office. Also, even though there is a reminder in the newsletter somewhere, do not forget to renew your membership to TERA as well as AERC because of another NEW cooler weather ride, Wacky Waco, gotta love the name, which is the first weekend in December so if you don’t renew you’ll have to spend more money entering a ride. Don’t say you have not been warned.

AERC Mid-Year BoD Meeting
A R N U CE D
On Saturday August 18, 2012 Mike Maul, Michael Campbell, and I attended the AERC Mid-‐Year BOD Meeting in Denver, Colorado. The following is a brief synopsis of what was discussed. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
N E
AERC Liability Insurance (Ride Managers Insurance) -‐ Equisure is the broker AERC gets the insurance through. The actual company is underwritten by Lloyd’s of London. At this point AERC will stay with Lloyd’s of London. They have covered our claims and have the best total liability coverage AERC can get.
AS
We discussed tweaking the number of rides drug tested and how we want it done.
DE RI
The membership committee is working hard to come up with ideas to increase membership and retain existing members.
TE X
RS
The AERC Ad Hoc Committee is developing a Strategic Plan for AERC for the short, intermediate, and long term. They presented their findings thus far. They submitted a motion to develop a new logo for AERC. The existing AERC Logo is over 25 years old. The AERC membership will be asked to submit logos for AERC and vote on the top three. From there the AERC BOD will choose the new Logo. The winner will receive an award yet to be determined.
The BOD passed a motion from the Ad Hoc/Strategic planning committee that will make access to online horse and rider records for members only.
TERA
Mollie Krumlaw-‐Smith the AERC Treasurer went over the 2012 and projected 2013 finances. It looks like we won’t be in the red for 2012 or 2013 but after that without some changes we will be fighting to stay in the black. The Sanctioning Committee brought forth sanctioning requests for some pioneer rides in Idaho. Susie Schomberg, head of the Rules Committee, brought forth a motion from the Rules Committee at the request of the BOD to list all names in a protest in Endurance News. The motion passed. Jan Stevens brought a request to the BOD for AERC-‐I requesting $2000 from AERC-‐I funds to help pay for expenses associated with the 2012 Endurance Championships in England. The motion passed. AERC-‐I also asked for $2000 out of the AERC General Operating Fund for the same reason. This motion failed. Mike Maul went over the survey that will be used later this fall.

N O
Patti Stedman head of the AERC Ride Managers Committee went over the short rides problem brought up recently within AERC. At this point she has not heard anything about Central Region. If a ride manager is questioning the length of their trail let me know. There are two AERC members that can help you measure your trail accurately with GPS tracks of your loops.
S O C I AT I
AERC is looking at moving the convention for 2014. Reno is no longer the huge money maker it used to be. Somewhere in the SE or Central region is being looked at. San Antonio is not an option for 2014. It is already booked. If you have any suggestions please contact a director. The key to the site is it must be a major airport hub, the rooms in the hotel must be reasonable, and fun stuff to do in the area. Submitted by Monica Chapman AERC Central Region Sanctioning Director

Yes, it’s that time again. Time for your vote to elect some new BoD’s for TERA as our faithful higher ups that have held the higher offices for a time have decided to take well deserved breather from those positions, only this time there is, as of time of printing, only one choice per seat. Those being nominated are as follows:

So cast your vote at the meeting which will be held before the ride meeting at the Trace the Trails ride this coming November 10th. If you have anyone else to nominate, please let Diane Campbell know about it before the meeting. She can be contacted at 254.698.1965 or email dcampbell1@hot.rr.com
Important Reminders!
TERA
And these are just a few reminders that you need to be aware of:
A: Do not forget to renew your membership, both TERA and AERC. As most of you know that have checked the ride calendar, we have ride sanctioned on the 8th of December which is, as you know, the first ride of the new ride season and that ride is the Wacky Waco Ride being held at Lake Waco, Waco, TX. Same place this years Old Glory was held. If you do not renew your memberships, you will have to pay the $15.00 day fee that AERC charges per ride and you will not get your TERA discount as well, so that right there is at least a $20.00 incentive to renew. B: Ann Goolsby is going to be in charge of food for the Lone Star Ride and needs your help to make it a great Thanks giving feast so please contact her to get a list of items that will be needed so we won’t have an overabundance of one particular thing, like desserts. Turkey and dressing will be provided. Her email is eagoolsby@aol.com or call her at 214.244.5483
AS
N O
C: Sylvia needs your volunteer hours to be turned in. If you have your hours recorded, please send them to her or give them to her at a ride. Her email is sfant2008@hotmail.com

An RTS Ride Story
By LeeAnn Rost
As we were driving into the Huge 6,000 acre Ranch with it’s beautiful rolling hills I was already getting excited for the ride. After we set up camp-time for the first vet check. Magnum got all A’s on his report card(vet check).Woke up at 5 a.m. and fed the horses and dressed for the ride. The group of 26 fifty milers that I was a part of left just after light a little after seven. I was at the front of the pack with Wilhemina(who had recently did her first Tevis and placed in top ten)and Eliott on the first loop till I blew a tire. This was a rocky ride and my usually barefoot horse lost one of his back easy boots after just a few miles(maybe cause I had put them on in the dark??). I stopped and put it in my fanny pack and we rode on. Magnum didn’t seem bothered by only having three tires. The first loop took us through dense brush and lots of hilly climbs and beautiful views where you felt like you were on top of the world. Up the steepest climb and I discovered one of the reasons for the breast collar, which I had neglected to put on my horse. My saddle had slipped almost onto Magnum’s hind end with the cinch under his belly. My cool headed horse did not seem to mind and just wanted to keep up with his new friend, but I made him stop so I could reposition the saddle-he may not have minded, but I did… About the middle of this loop we blew another back tire. This time it didn’t come all the way off and I heard a funny flopping sound. Magnum did not want to slow, but I made him stop and we took the other back tire off. Magnum was not minding his back feet bare over the rocks and we decided to just keep going. First loop of eighteen miles, then a vet check and thirty minute break. Magnum and I felt great. Magnum did not drink at all this first loop and scored all A’s except gut sounds-which was a C. I wish he wouldn’t try so hard to be a camel. Second loop was just eight miles over mostly flat ground. It went fast and Magnum and I still felt great. Magnum finally gulped some water this loop and his gut sounds went back up to an A at the end of this loop. Forty-five minute break, some lunch for both of us and we headed out for the third loop of 17 miles-partly hilly and partly over grassy fields. Magnum was still moving great, even over rocky areas. He must have very tough feet. When we came to the grassy areas we galloped to make up for slower time over rocky places. Once we were galloping along and Magnum simultaneously shied a bit to the right at the same time I heard a rattle on my left! A rattle snake was not happy at almost being tromped by a horse. I was glad both Magnum and the snake kept going and that I didn’t fall off. About the middle of this loop I was starting to tire, but still having fun! Back into camp and a good vet check and back out for the final loop after another break. Final loop was only seven miles and over mostly flat ground. Magnum was feeling good and was happy to keep up his fast trot and even some galloping. After the hot summer it sure felt good to have the temps in the seventies! Rode mostly the last two loops with a gentleman who has covered thousands of endurance miles on his horse. We took turns passing each other. I crossed the finish line in fourth place(out of 26 starters) and was very happy to get to announce my first ride of NOT getting lost on the trail! Sure had a blast! Last vet check was very good. So proud as always of my Magnum. And grateful to my hubby, Shane, who supports my fun and watches grandson Nate so I can ride! I love that I am making new horsey friends at the rides! Besides the 50 milers and 75 mile riders, there were 67 twenty-five mile riders and lots of volunteers and managers and vets- lots of people at this ride. A great bunch of very nice horse people! What a fun sport! Thanks to all those who make it possible for those of us who like nothing better than to be outdoors on the trail with our trusty steeds.
