The loss of a child is something that no parent should ever have to experience, but that's exactly what happened to Steve Eimers when he tragically lost his seventeen-year-old daughter Hannah in a car crash.

And to add insult to injury, an envelope arrived in the mail months later addressed to Hannah that included a bill for the damage done to the guardrail that had taken Hannahs life: $2,600 to install a new guardrail end terminal and $231 to get the highway safety device inspected. It total, it was nearly $3,000.

Her car struck a guardrail, and instead of cushioning the crash, the guardrail speared the car, killing Hannahinstantly.

Eimers later learned that the guardrail was defective, based on a design the state transportation department stopped using just one week before the accident.

An emergency medical tech himself, Stephen knows that the end terminal is supposed to crumple instead of impale, making the collision survivable.

It should have been, at worst, a minor-injury accident with property damage probably little to no injury, Eimers said. The girl that was with her in the other seat had a little, tiny cut.

For its part, Mark Nagi a spokesman for Tennessee DOT, said the bill was a mistake for which the department greatly apologizes.

He explained that TDOT has sent a new letter explaining the mistake, along with noting that there is no payment necessary, has been sent to the family. TDOT greatly apologizes for this mistake. There is no excuse for the letter/bill that was sent, and we will take measures to make sure that this never happens again.
