community. Property developers are also interested in our area. This is very exciting as it has been many years that we have seen any economic development which will benefit us.
lot is going on in this little community, everyone had a great holiday season and is back with renewed energy.
The District is still chasing funding to replace our aging water infrastructure; our water system is in dire need of replacement. Council is working on tourism and marketing strategy for 2011. The heat recovery system for the arena was completed in December, as well as the solar heating project for the outdoor swimming pool. This project is expected to have a heating cost savings of 50%.
In 2010 the District purchased a new grader and fire truck, as well the administration office received a much needed renovation and computer upgrade. A Special Events Coordinator was hired to do some much needed programming for the community. Our first winter carnival was held in late January in conjunction with the Olympic Torch relay, this was a huge success! Many new programs were initiated for the seniors: a fit for life class is held twice a week and monthly trips to the swimming pool in Chetwynd are now available. This position has been a wonderful asset for Hudson’s Hope.
Many meetings are taking place with various government agencies. Our ambulance service is facing challenges. We have met with the Northern staff and they are aware of our issues and are willing to work with us to change this. Presently, we have only three attendants who are committed to their job but need assistance. If you or anyone you know may be interested in looking into helping, there is an information package available at the District Office.
Presently there are three mining companies looking into this area. Two of the three have purchased tenures and are moving forward with environmental assessments. These mines would have a huge impact on our community. We welcome this industry to our February 2011

District News
In December we once again met with Northern Health regarding the doctor situation. This was a very good meeting with more of a commitment from Northern Health to work with us on this issue. Our next meeting is scheduled for the beginning of February. Northern Health is looking to the province for financial help to attract and retain medical personnel.
SNOW PLOWING
D
ue to the recent snowfall, the District has received complaints regarding driveways being blocked by snow. The snowplowing procedure during large snowfalls is to: First remove snow on the road with the plow truck. This will leave large snow berms across driveways. We then follow with the grader that has a gate for removing these berms. Finally the loader comes by to clean up any leftover snow. This is our normal procedure when staff and machinery are available. Sometimes staff availability and other District commitments may temporarily divert this procedure. We apologise for any inconvenience homeowners may be experiencing and we thank you for your patience as we try to clear all the roads. Mike Carter, Director of Public Works
A private physiotherapy clinic is now coming to H.H. on a regular basis. Council continues to work together to enhance and improve services to attract business to our community. I hope everyone gets out to enjoy the winter carnival. There is something planned for everyone! Until next month, stay warm and enjoy the good ‘ole Canadian winter. Mayor Karen Anderson

February 2011
Protective Services What a great end to 2010 and a great start to 2011. The Fire Department hasn’t been too busy over the last 2 months which is always a good thing for the residents of Hudson’s Hope. In December, we dealt with 1 Motor Vehicle incident in Beryl Prairie, a couple of lift assists for BC Ambulance, and 1 call for an electrical fire. At the fire call, the residents smelled burning and called the fire department right away. This gave us the chance to get to the residence quickly and ensure that the fire didn’t spread. Please remember that getting out and calling 9-1-1 is the most important thing you can do if there is a fire in your house!!! In January, we assisted BC Ambulance and dealt with 2 structure fires. Thankfully, no one was injured at either fire and one resulted in very minimal damages to the residence. Our firefighters continue to work hard to save what can be saved and did a great job at both of the calls. Here are a couple of things to think about when you travel this winter season: Make sure you are extra careful when driving at this time of year. Leaving space between you and the vehicle ahead gives you time to react if anything happens. Have a plan and let someone know where you are going, what route you are taking, and when you plan to get back. If you get stuck you will be thankful that people know you are overdue and where to start looking! If you are going out to enjoy all of the great outdoor adventure available in and around our community, make sure you carry a map, a compass, and a GPS (if you have one) and know how to use them. That way if you need to call for help, you have coordinates to let people know exactly where you are. Carry some basic supplies in your vehicle when you are heading out. These should include warm clothes, blankets, a first aid kit, some non-perishable food, and some water. If you are involved in an accident, because of the distances involved it can take a while for emergency personnel to get to your location, so a little bit of equipment and preparation can make a huge difference. As a final reminder and for new members of our community, the Hudson’s Hope Fire & Rescue Service is made up of dedicated volunteers who give of their time to protect their community. The Fire Halls are not staffed 24-7, so if you need to report a fire, Call 9-1-1! Also, if you see a vehicle with a fire department licence plate and its 4-way flashers coming up behind you; please pull over and let them by as they are responding to a call. I want to take a minute to thank all of the staff and volunteers who work with all of the Protective Services to make our community a great place to be. I couldn’t do it without you! Stay Safe, Chief Alan Stebbing, on behalf of, Hudson’s Hope Protective Services Department The Protective Services Department consists of the District Volunteer Fire & Rescue Service,
Emergency Social Services and Bylaw Enforcement personnel. February 2011

I’ve been out in the rain, the wind and the snow Met snarling dogs at the gate Yes, I’ve heard all the answers of why they say NO We give at the office they state. But, -then I remembered the call that I madeI was ushered in with a smile By a little girl five with sparkling eyes And she bade me sit down for a while I opened my kit as her Mom gave a cheque And with it a nice cup of tea The little girl whispered, ―You fixed my Mum’s heart,‖ And she hugged me as she climbed on my knee. I felt like a Queen stepping down from her throne As I thanked them It came from the Heart And I knew how I’d answer next year when they phoned I sure will, when do we start?
February is Heart and Stroke Month. And once again, canvassers have said, “Yes!” They will be braving “the rain, the wind, and the snow” to ask for your donations that will put smiles on the faces of many children, young and old. Water Conservation Tips The District of Hudson’s Hope Council has recently adopted a Water Conservation Plan and will begin some water conservation initiatives in the coming year. Below are some tips that you can use in your home to help with water conservation. DID YOU KNOW? Less than 3% of water produced at a large municipal water treatment plan is used for drinking purposes. Tips for the Sink: Repair leaky faucets and always turn off your taps tightly so they don’t drip. Even a small drip can waste tons of water. Use an aerator and a water-flow reducer attachment. Turn off water while brushing your teeth or washing your hands. Don’t run the water continuously while thawing food, hand washing dishes or while washing fruits and veggies; use a partially filled sink instead with a quick rinse afterward. DID YOU KNOW? A tap leaking one drop of water per second wastes more than 25L of water a day! That’s 9,000 L a year. DID YOU KNOW? Only 10% of our home water supply Is used in the kitchen and as drinking water but a whopping 65% of it is used in the bathroom. Tips for the Shower/Tub: Repair leaky faucets and always turn off your taps tightly so they don’t drip. Have showers instead of baths and keep them short (5 minutes). Install low-flow showerheads. DID YOU KNOW? A five minute shower with a standard showerhead uses 100 L of water. A five-minute shower with a low-flow showerhead uses 35 L of water. Tips for he Dishwasher: Wash full loads and use the shortest cycle. DID YOU KNOW? An automatic dishwasher uses 40 L of water, compared to dishwashing by hand, which uses about 35 L. CENSUS JOBS Apply now www.census2011.gc.ca 1-866-773-2011 - TTY: 1-800-363-7629 Employment Casual Employment List The District of Hudson’s Hope invites applications from persons interested in casual employment with the municipality. These applications will be kept on file for 12 months and will be referred to when there is a need for one or more persons to work on an “as required basis”. Casual workers may be needed in any area of the municipality’s operations (e.g., office work, custodial duties, general labour, etc.), so it is important to note in which areas that you are capable and willing to work. The Casual Employment List will not be used when filling a seasonal, part-time or regular position. A specific notice will be advertised in such cases. The persons selected for casual work will be required to become a member of the BC Government & Service Employees’ Union. Rates of pay are established in the Collective Agreement and vary for the various positions. Application forms are available at the municipal office or applicants may submit a detailed résumé of work experience, education and qualifications.
